Helena And La Mariposa Square Off In A Dead or Alive 5 Pro Match

By Ishaan . August 23, 2012 . 9:00am

We already knew that La Mariposa and Helena would be returning in Dead or Alive 5, but this morning, Tecmo Koei shared in-game footage of a fight between the two characters, once again controlled by professional players helping out with game balance testing.

Along with the videos, Dead or Alive 5 director, Yohei Shimbori, says that Team Ninja are in the final stages of balancing the game, and also provides some commentary on Mariposa and Helena’s strengths. You can watch both rounds of the fight below:

Round 1:

Shimbori: Lisa’s tricky moves set her apart. She doesn’t simply come straight at you, so if you’re not used to her actions, you have no idea what to expect. She also has a lot of strikes with long reach, making her good at mid-range offense, but now she has moves that come from runs and runs that comes from other moves, so she is way more active this time around. Of course you can launch attacks straight from the run, but you can also do things like stop in the middle of the run, trying to bring out a sidestep or hold from your opponent, and then follow up the attack. Her real strength shines when used by a player who is good with this kind of psychological game or has good fighting technique.

Round 2:

Helena is an extremely technical character. We’re trying to balance her to please the technical fighters who can appreciate the skill it takes to bring out the “real Helena.” First off, we got rid of simple moves like PP2KP, changing her style to one focused on mastering a rich variety of moves. From there, we removed crouching status from P+K because I wanted to make her style more about evading highs by using Bokuho stance. And by working on the moves from Bokuho and from her back-turned stance and making a faster transition from Bokuho to back-turned stance, you will really see a difference in her strength between players who just pick her up and players who train hard with her. I also took another look at Pi Gua Quan itself, and sprinkled a few special moves from that style into her repetoire. She’s really strong.

Dead or Alive 5 will be released on September 25th in North America.

Are there suppose to be vids with Mariposa in them?

    • Chiupon

You probably already know, but Lisa = Mariposa.

I’m guessing the labcoat is just a costume.

      • Barrit

Ohh, I actually didn’t know that. Thanks, I was pretty confused lol. I’ve never played the series before, but this one has caught my attention.

Looks good still and i’m still waiting for it to come out. Love lisa’s lab coat, its to bad they replaced the pantyhose with stockings. She looked more professional with before. I wish I had a better look at helena other costume.

I’m just glad that I won’t have to hesitate as much when wanting to choose to fight as helena. She is a good fighter but often times combos oftentimes wind up with her facing backwards. Getting out of that position was a slow turn. Though I guess my problem would be the same for anybody who doesn’t understand how to control Ayane and can’t keep her from launching into unneeded spins and twirls leaving her vulnerable too often.

  • Claire Oga

Finally Helena XD However, the fight wasn’t that impressive. I didn’t notice any big damage, anything scary that would make Helena stand out more or make me cringe if I would fight a Helena player.

    • andref

Well Helena never seemed to be designed for heavy hits since Helena like Christie were more like light weights dealing high amounts of damage over time. So most of Helena’s skills lied in combos but nothing flashy

      • Claire Oga

In DOA4, Helena was buffed pretty good with strong combos and she becomes very popular among players. It just bother me when characters like Hayabusa remains strong while Helena felt in the dump. I waited long for her to be reveal and this is what I got. Not very impressive.

        • andref

Can you really blame Hayabusa for being strong when he and the other ninjas come with such flashy movesets. First of all you got Hayabusa’s added ninpo fireball added in Dimensions and they already had his inazuna drop combos which did high amounts of damage. Plus he isn’t what I would consider a fast fighter so he has more heavier strikes but still is a medium fighter. Hayate is quick though I would consider him a technical fighter with his strong combos linked with the counter hold button. Ayane is quick but comes with a lot of kicks. Then Kasumi like Hayate has flashy combos whereas Hayate has leaves rushing into the screen, Kasumi has cherry blossoms

  • Misty Dawson

Sigh. Helena.. ;-; I miss your old look.

  • Hinataharem

Lisa isn’t a mad scientist. She is an angry scientist

  • DarthSithZero

I love the new models of the character Helena, Christie and kokoro all look very hot. Can’t Wait for DOAX3
