There Might Be More To The World Ends With You Countdown Than An iOS Port

By Ishaan . August 24, 2012 . 11:13am

Over on his Twitter feed, Brian Gray, the lead translator on The World Ends With You for the Nintendo DS, hints that there may be more to Square Enix’s recent teases than an iOS port of the game and a new soundtrack release.

Last night, Gray tweeted: “Before everyone decides the #twewy countdown is over, they might want to wait for the countdown to be over. #moredripthanleak”

Square’s The World Ends With You teaser website is counting down to an announcement that will happen this weekend. Hopefully, by then, we’ll find out whether they have anything more up their sleeves or not.

    I will just stay neutral.

So there is hope. Lesson today for all is to never jump the gun until all info is out.

    • http://twitter.com/sylar1985 Sylar100

It’s easier to jump the gun and be surprised, then to not jump the gun and be disappointed.

      • kevinposta

The easiest solution is commonly not the best one :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/masteryoshi88 Katharine Bush

It might be “Here is TWEWY 2 and if you did not play the first one, you now get it on the iOS!”

    • James Beatty

This, if a sequel is confirmed for real gaming platforms then i wouldn’t care about there being an ios port, in fact i would probably buy it and i hope that everyone who missed out on the fantastic original can play it and understand why its so great and hopefully that will garner interest and help it (the sequel) sell better

  • Luis Enrique

Even if it is a sequel announcement, SE has effectively killed any hype I had. Sad.

  • James Beatty

Announcing TWEWY 2 coming 2013 and an ios port of the first one to build interest in the sequel would be the best thing Square could do. If this isn’t the case and this guy is lying i’m going to be pretty upset and i will probably be done with Square enix for a while. (probably until KH 3) I will be happy as long as i can play it on either of my next gen Nintendo platforms (3DS/wiiU) which would do the most justice to the original game

  • Tales_of_Master

Glad to hear this. I hope it’s a sequel that will be released for the 3DS. At least that would give me the final push to go and hunt down a copy of the first game. Although I never played the first one, I’m pretty hyped up from what I heard about the series.

  • https://twitter.com/#!/SplashdownTiger STiger

Everything is a facade, it’s really a teaser site for Type-0.

  • $24431191

Hmm… so there is some hope left. Best thing to do now is to simply wait for the countdown to end. If were lucky, maybe there really is something more than just an iOS port.

  • http://myanimelist.net/animelist/OnyxSyaoran OnyxSyaoran

If Square gives us the sequel… I might think that Santa actually exists. Still, no hype until the countdown is over.

  • http://the-critical-hit.tumblr.com/ Musashi

    There’s no hope from Square-Enix.

  • Dantis

I’ve been listening to the Day 0 song all day. It’s glorious.

  • Vyrus

They better or else they’ll see hell from pissed-off gamers.

    • Paradox me

      So, business as usual?

      • Luna Kazemaru

Pretty much but then again gamers get pissed at just about anything :v

        • Vyrus

          LOL True.

  • Eric Jade Cardona

Remake for 3DS is possible… But hoping for that sequel

  • Levin_Scorpius

Square Enix, your PR Department (or whoever is in charge of this stuff) is either entirely staffed by people from a mental asylum, a bunch of monkeys in suits, or just really, really stupid people.

I’m definitely no business person, but even putting up a countdown to build hype for a possible sequel and having your plans for a port of the original leaked at around the same time isn’t really good for your public image, even if you correct yourselves later on.

edit: Also, if you were gonna announce a port of the game and put up a countdown teaser at around the same time, wouldn’t have been better to announce the former before putting up the latter?

  • SirRichard

Now that’s promising; I had seen his tweet earlier, but didn’t know who the guy was. Here’s hoping he’s actually hinting at something.

  • imaguni

Augh… :( Well, I’ll just stay neutral till Sunday.

  • Xapth

See, many people were getting worked up before the countdown had even ended!

There may be hope after all.

I’m personally hoping for a full sequel or an enhanced port/remake, either for 3DS.

    • http://twitter.com/sylar1985 Sylar100

A sequel is possible,m though i think a full remake would be out of the question for squeenix.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

So whatever it is is headed west? Thats good to know, assuming he is a us translator.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

He is a freelance translator who worked on the first game. And regarding the iOS version, that is almost certainly headed to the U.S., just like all of Square’s other major iOS ports.

  • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

    - Square-Enix used Esuna.
    - Fan is no longer affected by Beserk and Confu.

    • sd28

but what if the fans class is berserker

      • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

Then Esuna is innefective and it will still be mad, do not reason with a Beserk class!

        • sd28

sounds exactly like most gamers then

  • WingsOfEternity

Square Enix, those zetta sons of digits…

  • Paradox me

Companies really should just avoid using teaser sites in the future. Their intent may be to tease, but all they really do is open the floodgates for speculation based on wishful thinking.

The moment fans are roused from their idyllic daydream they have the gall to spout venom and place blame on companies, as if their own unchecked imaginations aren’t to blame for jumping to conclusions and generating massive amounts of hype from those assumptions.

    • kevinposta

That’s one of the dangers of using hype to promote your product: just how far will people speculate.

  • Dyne

    my heart over this
news of a TWEWY countdown website: my love for them lives!!
news it just for ios port: I think I die a bit inside my self from hearing this…
news there maybe/there is more news: Are you trying to kill me or not!!!

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

There had better be something more behind this countdown, or Square Enix is over for me.

    • James Beatty

      Same here.

    • Kris

      But I always come crawling back. ;-;

  • Ayaka

Starting to think this is how Square thinks to be marketing strategy.

Versus XIII, hype, news about the game cancelled, more news about not being true.

TWEWY, hype, news about the game being iOS port, more news about not being true.

It’s like a “Good! -> Hype! -> Kill the hype -> Fans are mad -> Decide to reconsider everything they decided before to not disappoint the fanbase even more.” Interesting.

    • neogeno

lol I’ve noticed this strategy. Angering fans is a dodgy way to hold attention/get hits/build hype. Problem is its effective.

    • Dylan Anantha

That’s what Capcom tried as well. Backfired on them though.

  • sd28

unless its a wiiu or 3ds sequel im not really interested

    • James Beatty

I do think Wii U would do a proper sequel justice, but i think 3DS would be a better financial decision overall. Maybe both though, Wii U and 3DS versions like the lost planet anime spinoff that’s coming to both ps3 and 3DS. If so i would probably double dip and give SE ALL MY MONEY! If this is only and ios port then…well i’m done with SE :/

a version for vita would not hurt….

  • doemaaan

well, whatever happens, I’m not expecting a sequel anymore..

  • RablaAndrews

Still calling bull to this ‘Port’ thing, that was never said anywhere except by some people joking around on NeoGAF. Besides, it’s physically impossible to play TWEWY on a single touch screen.

    • Solomon_Kano

Not really. They can split the display and create the same dual screen effect as on DS. Multitouch also allows you to control both at once.

      • Kevadu

Thank you.  I don’t know why some people seem to have such a problem with this concept…it’s not hard to imagine at all.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Carlo-Mercado/1283946291 Carlo Mercado

then the screen will be too small if your using the iphone or itouch.. cant see the fun in that.. it might stressed my eyes :(

        • Solomon_Kano

And I’m sure they’ve thought of that if they’re making an iPhone version.

  • http://Gematsu.com/ Bruno Silva

I adore the original game, and I’ll be getting the iOS version just because I love it so damn much. Still unsure how they’ll pull the game off in a smaller screen, as opposed to two screens which you’d need to play the game on the DS to begin with, but that’s something I’m sure they’ll show us pretty soon. I’d still prefer if they pulled an “overclocked” on this one and released it on the 3DS, but I can live with that.

Now, if there’s more stuff to be announced, I really wish for a sequel. Preferably on the 3DS, keeping up the same style and gameplay elements the first had. It was just perfect. Innovative, fun, engaging, and a true revolution in the jrpg genre, that simply shouldn’t be forgotten.

Keep the TWEWY flame alive SE!

  • gquain

pFFF, call me a retard but i still dont think it’s a MERE iOS PORT.
That’s not funny, doing the whole work of putting up a countdown for seven days just for a iOS port. There is more to that. There must be.
Information leaked on some japanese website, maybe even intentional, that’s why i am not trusting it.
heck, maybe they’ll even want to put up a counter next week for an android port?
That was a joke but even this joke hurt me bad.

  • Nameless App 1989

This may wind up being Famitsu’s surpise after all.

  • Solomon_Kano

Having not played TWEWY, I was actually pretty happy with the iOS thing (since I’m hoping that means it’ll come to Android at some point as well, like SE’s other stuff).

Watching all these people getting angry before we know everything is hilarious though. Hell, even if I had played it, this is ridiculous lol. People really need to chill. It’s a game.

    • Anesia Hunter

couldn’t you just get a ds/ds lite/dsi/dsi xl/3ds/3ds xl and a copy of the ds version of the game and play it though?

      • MaruluGames

        I don´t want to pay 70 – 80 € for a DS game.

        • James Beatty

It’s worth it. Also, you can get it for $20 on amazon

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

OK, time to rein it in. You can’t convince people to pay upward of 70 bucks for a console game, much less a DS game. Your blind Nintendo love really makes you say the most ridiculous things sometimes.

      • Solomon_Kano

Why would I buy a whole system to play one game as you suggest? I think I’ll stick with this version.

        • Anesia Hunter

why stop at just that one game? there are mass ds games and since ds (and i think the ds lite as well) is not region locked there’s a mass amount of ds games and most of them you can buy for cheap now.

          • Solomon_Kano

I’m aware that the DS has lots of games. Your suggestion of buying a system for a game as opposed to getting it in a format already available to me still just doesn’t really work, even if there are other games to be had.

If a movie is released on Blu-ray and I choose to buy it that way, would you suggest I get it on VHS or DVD instead? Does it matter? I still intend to play the game, that should be enough.

    • Quinton Cunningham

Not much of SE’s iOS library ever hit Android though. I remember Final Fantasy 1 & 3, Crystal Defenders and Dimensions, but that’s it. No Chrono Trigger, no Secret of Mana, no Chaos Rings…

      • Solomon_Kano

With Dimensions and FF3 being two of the more recent titles to be on both, I’m expecting this will follow suit. It could certainly go the way of Chrono Trigger though.

    • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

Play TWEWY and you’ll understand why most of us went apesh!t at the tease man!

      • komiko12

        Agree.

TWEWY is famous for a very good reason and the reaction of some fans here is quite understandable.

      • Solomon_Kano

Doubtful. I’m certain the game is good from everything I’ve heard about it, but there’s never any sense in jumping the gun like that.

        • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

          Plaaaaaay eeeeeet~

          • Solomon_Kano

I plan to, eventually. Probably once I get a 3DS.

    • James Beatty

The game is made to be played on the DS. I havent’ seen the iOS port, but i don’t see how they can make it work as well. Play it on the DS, it deserves to be played on it

      • Solomon_Kano

Then I guess we’ll see how they can make it work once we’ve actually seen the game.

  • Elemiel

Welp, time to get the party poppers back out then.

  • XypherCode

    My hype is back :))

  • Covnam

I was expecting something like an iOS port, but hoping for more. Hopefully the news will turn out to be something better. A new remix cd is cool though.

Guys calm/clam down. You guys can go RAAGGGEE if its turn out to be a iOS port when the countdown over.

Or do you need some tranquilliser???

  • Ispheria

yo, i know nobody asked or nothing but was i was hoping for was like a 3DS remake or something, or sequal, where they get the 3D screen to work for them so that all the fighting takes place on the top screen and somehow split it so that you see 1 character with 1 eye and other with another. not sure how that would work, but still.

  • LaserVision

No matter what they announce, Square Enix has already given me what I think is the perfect Nintendo DS game. Whatever they do now won’t ever take that away.

What I don’t understand is people actually being upset if there isn’t a sequel.

Guys, part of growing up means learning that you can’t always get more of the stuff you really like. I don’t need a sequel to every damn game, movie or book I enjoy.

    • Iris Miracle

I kinda agree with you on that. Cause it would really sucks if the sequel is bad. It would totally ruin my image of our perfect game:”The World Ends With You”. Cheers! (>x<)

    • James Beatty

The game is one of my all time favorite games. I love it, and i would want to play more in that world. Even if the sequel doesn’t live to expectations I would like to see it anyways.

too scared to get my hopes up now, don’t think i can handle getting trolled twice

  • natchu96

Right now, the music is basically a soundtrack montage. Oddly enough, the Twister lyrics are the english ones . . .

    • Dyne

maybe they like the english lyrics more? the Japanese do like them more some times.

  • http://Gematsu.com/ Bruno Silva

Well, we’re two hours short of knowing for sure what the website will reveal…I already have the page opened up while I play something. Trying not to get my hopes up, but hey, it’s TWEWY related, so it’s automatically great.

    • Solomon_Kano

Odd. I have it open and it says 1 day and 5 hours.

      • http://Gematsu.com/ Bruno Silva

My bad, I came here to edit my post :x I forgot that day 0 also has a 24hr countdown, which started not long ago (I’m guessing the countdown adjusts to your timezone? Which means we should know this before the countdown stops in most countries, knowing Japan gets to know earlier).

        Anyway, sorry bout that!

        • Solomon_Kano

Ah. Yea, after I saw that, I figured it probably goes by timezone. Good thing I check Andriasang, so I won’t need to wait til the countdown is up for me.

          • http://Gematsu.com/ Bruno Silva

Yeah, same here. This, andriasang and gematsu are my gaming news websites I always check on a daily basis (I go by FaithlessMr on the other two websites, I have my real name here coz I linked my twitter account, which I shouldn’t have in the first place but oh well). The reveal should happen tomorrow at 4pm in my time.

          • Solomon_Kano

Ah, I’ve never been to Gematsu, but I go by Balthier on Andriasang. I rarely comment though, since a lot of the more recent people commenting there are kinda ridiculous.

          • http://Gematsu.com/ Bruno Silva

(In reply to your other comment which I can’t reply to) Yeah, that community is atrocious now, and that’s exactly why I stopped posting there altogether. It gets worse and worse as days go by, I avoid reading the comments altogether so to not feel the urge to insult someone, lol.

          • Solomon_Kano

Same. It’s difficult to find anything thoughtful posted there lol. In the TWEWY Solo Remix article you had the only positive comment, everybody else was raging.

  • herolove

Lol the timer goes after your computers clock.
I changed my timezone to +13 and the timer went to 0.
But no announcement we probubly hawe to wait 3 h untill its 0 in japan.

    • Detrimont

      it all makes sense now

  • inuyasha_kagome_moyo

I’ve changed my laptop clock to the Tokyo timezone and there’s an hour and a half left. Still hopefully that it’s something better than an iOS port (though I could see how an iOS port would work and wouldn’t be too bothered if that’s all the countdown was for (just a little disappointed really)) but either way I just enjoy listening to the mashed-up TWEWY music. :)

  • herolove

Its up now and it seams to be the ios port.
    http://www.square-enix.co.jp/subarashiki-solo-remix/en/

    • http://Gematsu.com/ Bruno Silva

Yeah, nothing more other than that. Wonder if something more will be announced after this?

EDIT: Wait…the game goes on sale on August 27? That’s…tomorrow? (Well, today in Japan) That was fast!

EDIT 2: Nope, you control your character AND your game partner on the same screen. And they’re adding some new stuff. I won’t lie, this looks awesome. I’d still prefer this to be playable on the 3DS, I think the iPhone/iPod tiny screen will get messy, but, nice! Won’t be a problem with the iPad tho.

Solo edition…which means no top screen controls perhaps? Well, that solves the whole “one screen only” problem, but it still takes away one of the best aspects of the original…still getting it eventually out of sheer fanboyism :3

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Wow, its looking better on the iOS.
