Soul Sacrifice Makes You Look More Angelic Or Evil Depending On Your Sacrifices

By Ishaan . August 25, 2012 . 12:00pm

In Soul Sacrifice, you can sacrifice body parts to cast powerful spells in the game. Or you could simply sacrifice objects you find for spells that aren’t as strong. The greater your sacrifice, the stronger your spell is.

Designer, Keiji Inafune, says that your characters in the game will appear visually different depending on whether you choose to sacrifice more or save more.

“You’ve probably heard that you can customize your character, and you’ll have a lot of choices and options,” Inafune says. “But the way you choose to fight will affect your appearance. So if you keep on saving, or keep on sacrificing, the visual effect will look different; you’ll look more angelic if you keep saving, more evil if you keep sacrificing.”

In the game’s multiplayer mode, you can also sacrifice your teammates.

Inafune explains: “If my character is dying, and my friend decides to sacrifice me, I might say “hey, what are you doing?! Don’t sacrifice me!’ So it creates a reason to come up with new ways to fight.”

“It could lead to different kinds of heroism; you could save a bad situation by sacrificing yourself or a friend, or ask your friend to sacrifice himself for the good of the group. I don’t know that it’s always “fun,” but it’s a new kind of entertainment.”

I’m definitely going to go for the angelic route even if it means I’m going to be weaker.

  • DarthSithZero

I always love to be on the evil side, Fable, Fallout, Star wars and definilly evil on this game

  • Izzy Miyake

Ditto. My first run through is always as the “good” route.

If I end up doing a second run its always nice to plow through as a bad guy.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

I will sacrifice the lives of my enemies by beating them down to nothing =^_^=

In all honestly though I do want one white wing and one black wing on my character lol

    • Christopher Nunes

I wonder if you equally sacrifice and save things do you get a mix of both light and dark? I would kind of like that, have one angelic wing and one demonic wing with my character wearing glowing aura of light around the clothes while have a demonic appearance with demon-like eyes, a tail, clawed fingernails, markings on the face, and sharp teeth. That would be an interesting look!

But I’m a soft-hearted fool so I’ll probably save more souls than sacrifice other beings and body parts and opt to go with sacrificing objects, like getting the Leaf Sword, instead. So expect me to defend and support my team to the best of my abilities, usually I’m a beatdown rush character that waits for the right time to strike but I also backup my team with support or distract the enemy.

Really looking forward to this game when it comes out!

      • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Yeah, I really hope we can mix up powers so we get really bad ass looking characters. In reality I wouldn’t sacrifice my teammates either, BUT if they are going to die anyway……… XD

Its like choosing between shooting someone before they turn into a zombie so they can die as a human or to wait until they turn to kill them lol

        • Christopher Nunes

Indeed… like in the first Resident Evil movie near the end.

  • Tales_of_Master

Hopefully these visual changes are not purely cosmetic, and they will actually change what kind of ending we will get, a la Infamous. I’m defiantly looking forward for this, my Vita is gonna feel lonely with just Persona 4 Golden and Assassin’s Creed :D

  • Leon_Tekashi

For some reason, I’m getting an Infamous vibe from this if you know what I mean.

  • rinalicat

Sorry guys but I’m a good girl; I’d be like “Hey, can I have your spine?” and then just take it >:3

    • kupomogli

       Atleast you asked.

  • SirRichard

I wonder; is there is a middle ground for the pragmatic, the ones who save or sacrifice as necessary? Not many games with morality systems consider the grey area, which is often annoying. Still, nice to see that your decisions will have some cosmetic effect (so you know which of your friends is most likely to steal your liver to nuke something).

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I wondered about that, too. To be honest, the entire “interview” with Inafune is 90% PR fluff about how he’s going to make you feel emotion and how you’ll feel bad for killing an enemy because he’s fighting to earn money for his daughter or whatever, so I’m taking it with a little bit of salt.

I love Inafune, but that whole talk sounds like Sony asked him to basically hype up the game without giving out any real details.

      • SirRichard

Perhaps there isn’t much more to the game than what we’ve seen? We haven’t had any real gameplay details in a while, it seems to be just a nice twist on Monster Hunter and not much else. Probably all that’s left to talk about are the full lists of spells, items and monsters and all that, and if it has plenty of those to keep it going then that’s fine with me.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I considered that. Especially since Inafune even throws in a Monster Hunter reference, saying he was involved with that series, and thinks his experience will help with Soul Sacrifice. That speaks volumes about what this game is trying to do.

        • PoweredByHentai

So, I’m assuming that you haven’t watched this yet?
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Z2ed2JJYTk

          • SirRichard

I have, why do you assume I haven’t? It didn’t tell us or show us anything new when it was posted online, it just demonstrated all we had heard about. If your point is about the Monster Hunter thing, then I’m sorry but it still looks like a Monster Hunter-style game to me.

          • PoweredByHentai

I asked because it sounded like you haven’t watched the video at all and that you were basing your comments on what you have heard or seen from screenshots.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Every new detail that comes out about this game only makes it sound more and more interesting, definitely my most anticipated PSV title right now along with the new Ys and Killzone~.

  • http://www.angelmassb.co.nr/ Angel Mass

Interesting but… So far I havent seen any artwork, screenshot or  trailer that shows anything not even close to be “Angelic”

  • http://www.angelmassb.co.nr/ Angel Mass

I also want to take the Angelic route because something tells me is going to be the least popular one and I always like to take the least popular classes and such

  • konsama

That sacrificing other players sounds great, and plays a bigger role to team play, tho i bet i would have a darker look all the time.

  • Marcelo Henrique Chaves

That’s so weird, i thought after we died we would choose if we want to be saved or offer our soul to our companions, ergo sacrificing myself. But if my teamate chooses it then he is murdering me.
Anyway seems like this one i’m gonna have to create 2 characters. Which sucks in a hunting game.

  • Anime10121

This is sounding really good so far, cant wait to see more of this as it gets closer to release!  I swear all I think I need is one more nudge from a big third party studio and the Vita will be in my collection.

  • Solomon_Kano

This is sounding better and better. Before it sounded like you’d only be affected by sacrificing things, so it’s cool to know that there’s also an effect for saving them. Easily my most anticipated announced Vita game.

  • http://twitter.com/countpongula Vincent Hanna

Sony be sick whenever they come out with a new series. This game sounds like it got hella potential feel me, its finna be SICK

  • gooney121

So this game looks cool and all, but is it just me or has Inafune entirely forgotten he was also making Kaio for 3DS? I really want both this and Kaio!

  • Nickie

Question! Um, I’m really interested in this and the morality reminds me a lot of Fable but I noticed it’s been said it’s primarily multi-player. Well, here’s my question, do you have to have the people you want to play with on your friends list or can you meet up in like lobby’s ala Phantasy Star Online/Universe style?

Sadly I don’t have any friends with a VITA. >.>

ps. Curse you Mass Effect/Dragon Age for making me want romance options/elements in every game to. >.< I just think having to chose to sacrifice not just a random 'partner' if solo playing and you actually have a connection with them would have a more significant effect on your character and a tough decision on yourself.

    • Solomon_Kano

Considering how much that would limit multiplayer if you could only play with your friends, I’d imagine that there are lobbies. Probably not in the style of PSO/U though.

      • Nickie

As long as I can hopefully find some people to play with and have fun and are nice then I’m good! X3 I hope their like channels ala PSO though at least or Diablo~

    • https://twitter.com/kcgst Karu

I hope they make use of the Vita parties option so everyone can join like on XBL :( , and yeah, it´s hard to find people here with vitas as well haha

      • Nickie

Indeed! I remember way back when in Diablo you would make a room and people could join. Also Phantasy Star Online had that as well as lobbies, so if it’s like that then I think it should be fine. Just have to watch out for the bad ppl. >.>

        • https://twitter.com/kcgst Karu

Yeah, it wasn´t nice to host or enter a game and then someone decided to FSOD the game in PSO ._.

    • PoweredByHentai

There are lobbies.  Ragnarok Odyssey’s lobby system basically has you go to the bar and then you decide whether to search locally (ad hoc wifi) or via online.

If you do decide to go online with your friends, then you might want to hit the PS Home button to set up a party so that you can voice chat with your friends.

      • Nickie

Eh?! You can talk?! Can you talk with people that you meet online as well somehow? I mean say you meet someone super nice and want to talk to them more and not have to type everything, can you voice chat with people in your party?

        • PoweredByHentai

Well yeah, that is pretty much what the Party app is for. Here’s the link:
          http://us.playstation.com/psvita/apps/psvita-app-party.html

          • Nickie

But that keeps mentioning friends so I’m assuming it’s only friend list associates. Does that also include then people not on your list?

            I’m sorry if my questions seems rather idiotic, the only game I have for my VITA is Gravity Daze. ^^;

          • PoweredByHentai

That is why I specifically mentioned the conditions.

            1.  If you want to play with friends
            2.  If you want to play online

If both conditions are met, then using the Party App is the way to go.

If only condition 1 is met, then you don’t need the Party App because odds are that you and your friends are hanging out at the same location.

If only condition 2 is met, then I doubt Party App would work because the app is structured to work like XBL’s Party Chat system or service.

If you intend to play with random people online, then that would depend entirely on whether the game has in-game VOIP or not.  Otherwise, you’ll just have to add those randoms as “friends” and then use the Party App.

Must be kind of difficult for the guy sprouting horns and claws to convince you to trust him.  This will make for some interesting lobby interactions.

  • Rudy Soto

    Gotta say, I’m loving this.
I’m really loving the whole middle path they placed there. Instead of going to one extreme, either saving everybody or sacrificing everything, there’s actually a path that involves a more morally gray area.

  • Istillduno

I hope there is a way to opt out of being sacrificed by someone else, or that a sacrifice you haven’t caused doesn’t permanently scar your character.

If not you better believe by the first month everyone going to be some real ugly things as trolls just join parties to sacrifice people.

    • PoweredByHentai

Don’t want to be sacrificed?  Don’t suck at the game (read: don’t die).

      • NEKO WORKING

yup someone who suck at gaming can help by become sacrifial lamb :P

        • PoweredByHentai

This is why armies always keep a fresh supply of noobs… for cannon fodder.

          Remember Operation Human Shield?  XD

      • Istillduno

If you’d actually read the article you’d see Inafune mention someone dying (ie. not dead yet) being sacrificed and besides I assume that difficulty will scale with the amount of players so to troll all someone would need to do is hang back, maybe grab resources to sacrifice and do noting with them, wait for teamates hp to drop to the required level and then sac and run.

Of course this is assuming a players needs to even be at low hp to sacrfice and cant just be sacrifced whenever.

Also lets not even get into the issue of lag spike, dead, scarred permanently since some tosser just sacced you.

        • PoweredByHentai

If you bothered to watch the gameplay video that I have posted several times already, you’d notice that your character has to “die” before anyone can revive or sacrifice you.

It isn’t an issue of low HP or not.  It is an issue of you dying to an enemy and being in the “bleed-out” screen where you wait for someone to either revive you or to sacrifice you.

  • http://amc9988.deviantart.com/ amc99

In the game’s multiplayer mode, you can also sacrifice your teammates.

Oh man there’s definitely gonna be a lot of troll XD

  • Spider-Man

Loving this. Regardless, I can tell my character will look grotesque and disgusting.

  • http://ggftw.com/forum/ Monkey_T

This will definitely be one of the games on my “must-buy” list when I someday get a Vita.

  • Christopher Nunes

Definitely getting this game when it comes out, sounds like a ton of fun! Also the visual effects reminds me of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic with the Light and Dark side system that effects your character’s appearance.

The more I read, the more I’m considering getting a Vita.

  • tha_Chiller

this game here…..sounds too awwsum. Sounds like a RPG meant for the Vita & not a port

  • Vitonofrio del Rosso

    I know i like extremes…
I’ll play once on the extreme BSDM routes, sacrificing eye, tongue, ear and whatnot… and be OP strong and OP ugly :P
and one angelic playthough being beautiful and godly useless and weak XD

  • Göran Isacson

On the one hand, it sounds kinda interesting that you’ll be able to judge at first glance if someone sacrifices or saves. On the other hand, there’s something… I dunno, tired about this? One choice is good, the other is evil, one makes you look like Puppykick VonRavageson and the other like the msot perfect angelical person ever. Don’t we all kind of groan at this when other games uses it?
