Prince of Persia Creator’s New Karateka Remake Confirmed For Wii U

By Ishaan . August 27, 2012 . 3:32pm

Back in 1984, Prince of Persia creator, Jordan Mechner, developed a beat-em-up known as Karateka. In Karateka, you played as a practitioner of martial arts, who sets out to rescue a princess from the evil Akuma. As you may have heard, Karateka is now getting a modern remake, also developed by Mechner.

This game is in development for the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and iOS, but an ESRB rating reveals that Karateka is also headed to the Wii U. The game has a T (Teen) rating.

In the new Karateka, you’ll get to play as three Japanese warriors, once again attempting to rescue a princess from an evil warlord.

Oh, it’s the remake? I thought it was only going to be for the VC or something when i saw the ESRB this morning.

Yeah that’s what I thought at first too. lol The Wii U getting the remake would be fine by me though.

Not quite sure what this comment has to do with a WiiU game. Also please be aware we do ask our posters to refrain from bashing systems regardless of what system that is.

I think he was just saying that because in the article it says it coming to PS360, PC, Wiiu and Ios.

While I have no real connection to this game, it being way before my time, I’m still pretty interested in this remake. Are they updating it because they’ve got a really cool idea for how to make the concept seem fresh and relevant, or is this just the cynical, minimum effort repackaging of a famous name? Time will tell, and I’ll be keeping an eye out…

Nice to see that Jordan Mechner is still active. I guess he wanted to do something other than film his brother running around in pyjamas all the time. ;P

    omg! I loved this game.
one of my first games for my gameboy. (no not gameboy color. just gameboy)

kicking was the only option for me in this game. because you moved super slow and  punching didn’t have enough reach.

    • Truly the pinnacle of fighting game storytelling. [Nod]

  • I never beat this game :/

  • Interesting, I’ll definitely be checking this out when it releases. Jordan Mechner is an awesome game designer and I’d love to see a game of his other than Prince of Persia (as much as I love that).

Hadn’t heard of that game in ages…good memories. It was hard as hell and was so fun. I hope the remake can live to its name.

  • Hmm~ “Karateka“, you say?

  • Hahaha! This is awesome news!
