Rune Factory 4 Is The Best-Selling Game In The Series

By Ishaan . August 27, 2012 . 11:00am

Rune Factory 4 is the best-selling game in the series thus far, producer, Yoshifumi Hashimoto, reveals on the series’ blog, confirming what we already knew. The game debuted with 85,955 copies sold in its first week back in July.

As previously reported, that’s a higher opening than any of the previous Rune Factory games. Here’s a look at how the games’ first-week sales compare:

(2006) Rune Factory – 42,210

(2008) Rune Factory 2 – 52,049

(2009) Rune Factory 3 – 41,279

(2012) Rune Factory 4 – 85,955

As of August 19th, Rune Factory 4 has sold 135,376. That’s already well beyond Media Create’s recorded lifetime sales for Rune Factory 2, which was the best-selling game in the series prior to Rune Factory 4.

Rune Factory 2’s lifetime sales are recorded at 117,572 (note that the actual figure is probably higher than that, considering Media Create don’t count Amazon sales and so forth). Rune Factory 4 looks like it will easily break the 150k mark.

So, are we getting a Rune Factory 5? Of course! Hashimoto has already hinted that a sequel is likely on its way at some point in time.

That’s great news.. now localize it for me :D

    • Daniel Morandi

Make this game more sucessful :D

    Wow, big congratulations.

I wonder what attributed to the big boom? I mean, that’s double the amount of RF3.

    • Phlo

I’m assuming it was the addition of the female playable character. The Harvest Moon games have a sizable female fanbase.

      • Ty Arnold

This would also explain why RF2 sold better than 3 despite 3 improving the gameplay a ton.

I’d say the following are all contributing factors:

      1. RF3 was the third game in the series on the same platform and it wasn’t all that different from 1 and 2. Some people probably decided to just sit it out.

      2. The male/female option in RF5. This is a huge deal, just as customizable characters were for Harvest Moon: A New Beginning.

      3. The bachelors/bachelorettes are all popular archetypes among men and women. They put a lot of careful planning into which kinds to go with, and improved the dating system, too.

      4. New platform = renewed excitement.

Does #4 matter that much? Just wondering.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yup. A new platform is always a good time to launch something new or re-launch something old. People are excited in general and looking forward to playing games on their new system, so you can build on that.

Wow, thanks for the detailed reply. :3

Its always a good feeling to see a series you like doing well, and it looks like having both a male and female main character option has helped out quite a bit. Hopefully we’ll see the same in Rune Factory 5.

Currently waiting for a US release date now!

Wow surprising that RF3 didn’t do very well, it’s the best RF in the DS imo (not counting RF4 since I never played it yet)

  • gquain

The game should head to europe.
WE will welcome it with open arms!
All our money belongs to you!

    • Samurai_Heart

Just be prepared to wait XD, once USA has been announced and released…wait for Rising Star Game’s to release it at 1-2 years =p. But in all honesty :’( wished this game and the new Harvest moon comes quicker than the others in their series…

Any chance that we have the salesfigures of Frontier and Ocean (Tides of Destiny) for comparision? I know those are on console, but that would be fun to see the difference.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

First-week sales for RF Frontier: 18,520

First week for RF Tides (PS3): 28,939

First week for RF Tides (Wii): 10,495

The Wii software market was in the gutter by the time Tides of Destiny came out in 2011, thus the horrendous numbers on that platform. Basically, the console versions come nowhere near the DS/3DS ones.

      • andref

Question I know the wii version of tides was wii mote only which is why I didn’t consider buying it but was the PS3 version move only?

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

You can use the Dualshock in the PS3 version.

  • eliel

awesome! happy to c this game selling well :D
    can’t w8 for us release ;)

  • Anna Scruton

Great! Now bring it over here pretty please!

  • Lazulis

I hope these numbers will be repeated when RF4 gets localized! I’m so excited for what things they could add to RF5 already!

  • Anesia Hunter

I’d love to see this localized by christmas or Q1 of next year. *_*

If the origin article was anything to go by, then this success is nothing suprising and is well deserved.

If Hashimoto maintains that line of thinking, then the series will continue to flourish. We could very well be witnessing the growth of another gaming phenomenon.

I think what Rune Factory is missing is some sort of communication element. Like where girlfriends and boyfriends can play together, or exchange stories, or friends can just hang out together and trade and so on.

Animal Crossing, Pokémon and Monster Hunter are all very reliant on communication for their success, so I feel like Hashimoto and co. should be looking into ways to have Rune Factory incorporate that as well.

  • JMaster3000

Come on come on come on!!
I wanna see it in Europe!

  • https://twitter.com/maxiburger maxiburger

YES! I was hoping for good news from this game! Recently I’ve been trying to get my hands on the older portable titles but they’ve become really hard to obtain these days (or rather pricey despite their age). Could it be the Western print run was lower due to their original sales figures? Because if that’s the case, I feel confident about a Western localization of this instalment!

  • Zero_Destiny

Wow, those are really great numbers. They deserved it.

  • TruSpindash

I felt like three perfected the series so I’m curious to see how they have manged to improve the game further. Can’t wait to see this game released in the U.S., It would defiantly be a system seller to me.

  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

So no more spinoff titles??? But then again, Rune Factory is more suited to play on handhelds…

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/UNS2DBZGVODSB33T2SPVFYPUFI Ks

That’s really great! Now localize it here!!! Please? I mean, I’m SURE they’ll localize it here in the US (and other places) since it did so well there…right? :/

  • katie heistand

Does anyone know if Les and Frey are both in the game, or if you get one or the other?

  • Misha

Now they see what happens when you add a female protagonist. Took them long enough : /
