Shin Megami Tensei IV Trailer For Your Viewing Pleasure

By Ishaan . August 27, 2012 . 11:26pm

Earlier today, leaked images from the Shin Megami Tensei IV trailer included with Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers for the 3DS made their way onto the net. Now, the actual trailer itself is available for viewing, and you can watch it below:

As previously reported, Shin Megami Tensei IV is being directed by Kazuyuki Yamai, the director of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne’s updated “Maniacs” edition (simply called Nocturne in North America).

Yamai also worked on the Devil Summoner games with Raidou Kuzonoha. He’s joined by art director, Eiji Ishida, and main programmer, Satoshi Ooyama, who also worked on Nocturne.

Shin Megami Tensei IV will be released in Japan in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS.

Very cool. Let’s just hope it will be as good as Nocturne and SJ. But hey, that’s a no-brainer, since all core SMT games are excellent.

  • Devsxc

    This is AWSOME

  • Devsxc

    This is awsome!!
also the music reminded me a bit of the theme for ichigaya on SMT: Imagine

  • XypherCode

    Hype +100.01 :))

  • klkAlexar

Looks very static, I hope we get another one soon.

  • rinalicat

Ah! I recognise so many voices! Looks interesting!!

  • Meh. It looks good — very good, in fact — but nowhere near as intriguing as Nocturne. I mean, no Dyson sphere, for one. No demonic body-tattooed neck-horned magatama-eating hellspawn main character. No freaky cylindrical objects and weird fractal cubes everywhere. It’s just… a ruined city. And a bunch of people all wearing the same outfit. It has more of a Digital Devil Saga look to it than a Nocturne look — and Digital Devil Saga was nowhere near as good a game IMHO.

    • Suicunesol

Sounds like you’d rather play a Nocturne sequel than an SMT sequel. :O

      • Yeah, pretty much. ;) Or more like, I’d rather play an SMT sequel that has the same sense of surreality and abstractism (shut up, I can make that a word if I want to! heheheh). Based on this trailer, SMT4 just looks a bit too “safe” for what I know the series is capable of.

        • You know, between the anime FMV here and the full voice-acting/new intro for Soul Hackers, it looks like they’re probably eyeing some of their Persona audience.

Judging by the trailer, this is still very much MegaTen and nothing like the vibe Persona gives off, but in terms of features and presentation, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they were trying to get that lucrative Persona audience to take an interest in SMT, going forward.

For my part, I’m just glad this looks nothing like Strange Journey.

          • revenent hell

I have strabge journey…is it realy that bad? I havent played it yet since ive been focusing on finishing the “main” tittles…

          • Extra_Life

I thought Strange Journey was one of the best DS games I’ve played, and I’ve played a lot. I do like a dungeon crawler though :)

          • Daniel Morandi

The game is pretty good but if you don’t like dungeon crawlers with first person exploration then Strange Journey is not a game for you. If you don’t mind then is a good game, tons of demon (more than 300), animated sprite, law/chaos/neutral routes and the demonica suit have some good feactures that expand your skill.

          • I haven’t played it, unfortunately, so you’ll have to take everyone else’s word for it here. I’m just not a dungeon crawler person. :(

          • SetzerGabbiani

Of course.  Atlus knows where their “bread is buttered”.  They would be foolish to not attempt to reach out for the Persona audience.

            I loved Strange Journey.

          • Oh, to each their own. Dungeon crawlers and I just don’t agree with each other, so I’m very glad to see that SMTIV appears to be third-person.

Agreed on the Persona front. It would make a lot of sense for them to create some overlap between the two audiences, since it means more guaranteed sales.

          • Morricane

Me too, I barely slept for a week when I got hold of Strange Journey…and then I layed it to the side and have not finished a single playthrough yet :/

        • Ethan_Twain

Unfortunately, SMT 3 is the only entry I can think of that has the sort of bizarre setting that you’re describing.  That was pretty much a new thing in Nocturne, and isn’t really represented in any of the other games.  Not SMT 1 or 2, not Persona, not Digital Devil Saga, not Devil Survivor, not Devil Summoner…

Just pointing out that the extreme abstractism you crave may have been more of an irregularity in SMT 3 than necessarily a franchise trademark.

  • Hmm… just some speculation there, but is there some universe-overlap going on? That stone city setting doesn’t really seem like it’s from the same place as the modern metropolis one. Looks like the MC’s out of his element.

(Though, we’ll never know if it’s a “he”. Hasn’t turned around yet. And that coat just about hides everything. :3)

    • undersaffiresky

      Definitely could be.

The vibe I got from it that is that we were seeing the world through varying stages of time. Looked like the same characters were present during the different “periods” as well, which could indicate time travel. Though the idea I prefer is that we get to play the game through the different periods as time progresses. (Perhaps they’re immortal?)

But universe overlaying/hopping is a possibility, too.

  • And JP/World goes KABOOM again. (Those modern ruins sure stand out w/h the stone wall traditional city)
Defin. not Kagatsuchi (I think). Nuclear reactor?? Demon research goes wrong?? DEVA System??
The ppl in blue…. Law side??
    Will we hv talking demons??
Silent MC?? The hairdo looks girl but then again….

Hope we will get more info when TGS comes around.

if theres is something shin megami tensei titles are avobe the others its the atmosphere, and from the trailer the setting seems quite ambitious compared to others titles, im eager to see what they come with, specially since the announcement they made of trying to make the best jrpg for 3DS, since ATLUS its not the kind  of company that do those statements just for publicity.

  • Tales_of_Master

Although not much was revealed in the trailer, I squealed when I heard the Law theme from SMTI plays at the beginning. I’m loving the music and the atmosphere of the game. Is that a a girl at the end of the trailer ? Could the protagonist be a female this time around ? Can’t wait to see more of the game :D

    • Daniel Morandi

I believe the main character is a bishie with a ponytail.

      • That’s what I was thinking… Unless it’s like an extremely flat-chest Korra-like girl. But we just gotta play the waiting game~ See what Atlus will say in the near(?) future. *can’t wait for TGS!*

  • SirRichard

Time-travelling or world-hopping between a modern, technologically advanced world and one much less so, probably with magic? I wonder how Law and Chaos fit into this. I’m intrigued, either way.

    • Ethan_Twain

Since SMT games most always revolve around the apocalypse or some other sort of cosmic end all be all reckoning that destroys Tokyo for no particular reason, I interpreted the shifting environment as being different stages of Tokyo’s destruction.  Starts out as a modern urban center and eventually you can get all the way to just barren wasteland, with a couple different stages of destruction/primitive rebuilding in between.

The castle is notably not of the Japanese design, which suggests that it’s not from the past.  I say that it’s something built by survivors of whatever the great calamity this time around is.

It really is just speculation at this point though. :)

  • Alexander Aubert

    whale feather?

  • Isaac Newton

    it’s time….
    It’s time….
    IT’S time……
    IT’S TIME!!!!!

    TO SAVE MY SALARY!!!!!!!!

  • zeta

hmm so how dark is this going to be, me cannot wait anymore.

at least this is a better teaser than a countdown with misleading sequel beliefs.

    • LightZero

Considering SMT1, 2, Nocturne, and SJ are dark you shouldn’t have to worry.

  • This trailer screams SMT. And I think that’s just lovely. I couldn’t be any more excited even I wanted to. Awesome!

  • Shane Guidaboni

I got chills. This is going to be an incredible game. The end of the trailer suggests the game will be in third person. I wonder.

  • Alphabet Soup

YES!  CanNOT wait to play this game!

  • With this “early” release of the Shin Megami Tensei IV trailer, the sales figures for Soul Hackers might drop just a bit.

This game looks interesting! @SirRichard:disqus has already summed up everything I was thinking about while watching the trailer.

EDIT: I like how Atlus have created many series that derive from a core idea but maintain their own unique feel to them. After purchasing Catherine (my first Atlus title), I will continue to support Atlus with many of their titles in the future.

    • cj_iwakura

Soul Hackers is an amazing game, and the notion of people not buying it because they’ve already seen this trailer is saddening.

      • Outside of Japan, the game would still be bought regardless of the inclusion of a SMT IV trailer or not. Since it is Japan, it will be hard to gauge whether it will  now have an affect on the sales now; only Atlus’ projected sales figures against actual sales figures will determine how it does now, in the short-run.

I forgot to mention it was “just my opinion”.

  • revenent hell

I do adore nocturne but this isnt looking half bad thus far…I have no real preference for younger/older charecters since a good game makes me like whatever charecters im given…so based on this….I think i’ll genuinely adore this game to the music made me love it haha

  • Ethan_Twain

Okay.  I’ve watched this a couple times through now and I feel like there isn’t REALLY all that much to be taken from it.  The 2D art stills they flash up are super high quality, but we all knew that the 2D and 3D art was gonna be great.  It’s always great.  The music was great, but that was also to be expected.  The main idea they were communicating was Tokyo getting destroyed and demons running around wild… which is pretty much what always happens.  Nothing new here yet.

However, if one is willing to go into speculation then there’s another possibility that becomes clear… is that a female protagonist?  The character we see the most is the one with that little ponytail, and it’s probably not by accident that we never see the character turn around…  I think Atlus is actually gonna go for it.  I hope so at least!

    • amagidyne

That would be cool. I don’t get why they haven’t just had a protagonist with a selectable gender in all the SMT games. They’ve done it before, and it wouldn’t exactly be expensive.

      • Daniel Morandi

I only ask if they do this stuff about chosing the gender I hope to see different scenes and dialogues, yes take P3P as example or something similar but I really hate the games that let you choose male or female character and the only thing that is different in the dialogues is the him/her word in the sentences.

        • amagidyne

Since this is Shin Megami Tensei and not Persona, I doubt they’d change anything but the model and the pronouns.

Why do you hate that? Some people prefer playing female characters, and there’s nothing about the games that has ever required them to have a male protagonist. I think it’s worth having the choice just to have it.

          • Daniel Morandi

I hate seeing the same dialogues and scenes because it lacks of replay value. Like I said, P3P is a good example cause is like playing a different route if you choose female MC instead of male one.
Hell I don’t hate playing with a female MC even I enjoyed playing with Maya in P2.

    • LightZero

It’s a man. You can tell by his built that is a guy. Slightly feminine looking guys are common in anime and jrpgs. Hell Yuri Lowell had a costume with a pony tail in Tales of Vesperia.

  • Daniel Morandi

Good trailer and amazing music. Many thing that will return from the old smt and I bet they will keep things from Nocturne like the 3rd person view. Do the main cast begin as part of the Messiah cult? maybe we could betray them and go to the Gaia or something like that.

Anyway moral choice won’t matter, I’ll choice the side with better girls lol

  • XiaomuArisu

Maybe that old castle is heaven and after something happens you get send to earth.
BTW I heard Arararagikun from Bakemonogatari in this trailer…sorry I stuttered.

  • amagidyne

    Looks like it’s Nocturne-style. Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

  • kylehyde

    I don’t like it, I love it.

  • SetzerGabbiani

I’m more than ready for this and Soul Hackers.

I know Atlus staff frequent Siliconera, and they know the hype machine is in full effect as of now.  Catherine, KoF XII, and Persona 4: Arena have filled the coffers, now it’s time for what we’re really waiting for.

If you couldn’t tell, my money is ready.

  • Ziodyne

Man, this is looking great! I’m hoping that the statue/sculpture is Gotou and that human party members are back.

  • superdry

Holy damn, that was exciting to watch.  Music was great and gave off that suspenseful feeling very well.  Definitely feels like a SMT game.

Judging by the end, the game will be played in third-person?  Cannot wait for this to come out.

  • CirnoLakes

    I’m… I’m speechless….
C-Cutie Mark Crusaders… tell them how I feel.

  • I’ll take 2 please!

  • DesmaX

I wonder if Nocturne MC would make a cameo in this (Like Digital Devil Saga).
    That would be cool.

    Can’t wait to hear more

  • Reluctant_Hero

    That was an awesome trailer!

  • Joseph Santee

Welp, that’s the first SMT trailer to ever truly freak me out. D:

    This is going to ROCK.

  • Take all my money dammit!!!

  • personablaze

Oh….Oh wow…My Heart just skipped a beat…This is…to epic for words…Damn I dont think I can handle an more epicness from Atlus….Anyone else?

  • Sean pocha

Aaaaaaand my mind is blown, time to figure out how to afford a 3DS…

  • Julien_N

Apparently, the SMT1 hand-attached keyboard is back. %)

    • Crok425

       The COMP is back… awesome!

  • konsama

This thing seriously hyped me, now i have an even better reason to get a 3DS. >_<

  • Alexandra Cordes

    Korra, is that you? O_O

  • AoiKaze

Looks like another game to get for my 3DS! I hope the gameplay is like SMT: Nocturne! Although I really like the Devil Survivor gameplay, it’d be awesome to have Nocturne-style gameplay on the go. X3

  • Solomon_Kano

I’ve never even played an SMT game and this trailer got me hype.

I’m loving the setting and the music, and I’m liking that we might just have a female protag. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for this.

    • Crok425

It looks male to me XD. Anyway, I recommend playing the main SMT games, you can start with Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne for the PS2.

      • Solomon_Kano

I think s/he kinda looks like Korra though! I’m not the only one, apparently lol.

Would that I had a PS2 still, I’d love to play it. Heard lots of great things about it. Hopefully Atlus can put it up on PSN.

        • Crok425

Hope that happens… I’m wishing for it.

  • Hinataharem

    My body is ready

  • imaguni

    Ahhh, so excited!!

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    SOO hype

  • I am super excited for this game now. Strange Journey and Nocturne are both amazing games and I’d love to get my hands on the next main game in the MegaTen franchise. Oh so very excited by this trailer.

  • I got this frm the Utube comment. Hmmm….

1:01 female: “Demon and human are the same?” (O__o U srs!?)
1:30 male: “This world has been doomed / is done already.”
1:52 male: “So you’ve made up your mind, very well.”
