Metal Gear Solid is going social. At the series’ ongoing 25th anniversary event, Konami announced a new game for GREE—Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops.

The game is scheduled for release between autumn and winter, and will be a 3D title running on Unity. It will be made available worldwide.

I… don’t totally get it. It doesn’t seem to mesh well together to me. I personally don’t think that MGS can be a social game without trying really hard to fit in. But I suppose I’m prepared to eat my words.

Social Ops… I kind of love that.

Yeah, it has a psy ops feel to it.

Well, with all these MGS announcement, hopefully we will hear something about MGS5.

I’m just curious here, but what’s with all the social games lately?

Cheaper to make and can reach a vast audience (just about EVERYONE has a mobile).

Resident Evil, Naruto, Bleach, and now Metal Gear Solid? What’s this GREE anyways?

      Social Network of sorts.

GREE and Mobage started out as free online game collections where you don’t have to sign up with your real name, kinda more like Xbox Live. There was another social network (Mixi) that was more like Facebook, but it adopted GREE’s business model too. People in Japan use social networks primarily for gaming so this semi-anonymous environment really boosted their popularity. Those three networks have 24 million users each while Facebook only has 4 million users in Japan. Most games are free to play but you can pay microtransactions to skip grinding phases or to get special in-game contents (see also: kompu gacha). These games also tend to be a little bit more elaborate than your average Facebook game so they’ve become a bigger competition to “traditional” gaming – hence Nintendo’s attempt to build its own social network into the upcoming Wii U.
      … So it’s a pretty hot topic!

Social Ops: sneak into your frend’s house and eat a parrot over his sleeping body.

‘Course even among social games MGS has got to stand out, doesn’t it? Ah well, it’ll probably help tide Konami over until Kojima’s done with Ground Zero.
