Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Announced For Release In 2013 [Update 2]

By Ishaan . August 31, 2012 . 8:14pm

Square Enix announced a new Final Fantasy XIII game at their Lightning Saga event in Japan today. This is titled Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and represents Lightning’s final battle. The concept is based on the keywords “Lightning Returns” and “World-Driven”.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII takes place in a place called Novus Partus (above), which comprises of four islands connected by a monorail system. Here’s a concept image Square Enix used to show off the game’s world:

Lightning Returns takes place many years after Final Fantasy XIII-2. In the game, the world is set to end after 13 days, and an in-game countdown clock acts as a constant reminder of this. All actions you perform in the game use up time from the clock.

Square Enix say Lightning Returns will feature a heavy focus on customization with several different costumes for Lightning, and is a game designed around the idea of responsiveness and giving you more direct control over Lightning. Finally, they also showed off concept art of a monster—the Red Dragon Monster:

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is slated for release in 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Interesting as long as I know what happened after the ending of 13-2. I wonder if they will still add the name 13-3 or if it will just be Lightning returns. I don’t mind either way I just think it’d be confusing to those who don’t follow it as much. Edit* I’m kinda tired so if I don’t sound enthused blame that but honestly I’m REALLY looking forward to this and to seeing how this game plays out I do kind of hope it won’t be just Lightning though just because I like the party system and even it’s just monsters I wouldn’t mind. Overall I’m looking forward to seeing this and buying this game on the ps3 next year.^^

    • $733987

Here’s a guess at how they will reveal the stuff that happened between 13-2 and Lightning Returns; Read the novel.

  • OatMatadoQuatro

Sounds like the title of a Batman movie. Square, you better give me more than two protagonists this time! At least bring back Hope after so many build up the kid had in the two past titles.

  • SantiagodelosSantos

I don’t really get it. Why 3 FF 13 games? The fans don’t seem to want it and (correct me if i’m wrong) they haven’t sold extremely well and they weren’t adored like previous installments. It’s nice that they are finishing the story line, but they really could have done so in 1 game, maybe two. :/ …I’ll still buy it though, to finish the story arc.
edit: Also, the naming isn’t very consistent so my OCD is freaking out. FF 13, FF 13-2, …lighting returns: FF 13. That’s like if tolkein made lord of the rings 1, lord of the rings 2, and king returns: lord of the ring
further edit: that 3 piece of art with that modern-esque looking town actually looks intriguing to me.

    • Herok♞

Actually I think FF13 was the highest selling at launch and FF13-2 didn’t do badly, the reason why it seems like fans don’t want it is the people who hate something are always the most vocal about it.

  • Crevox

Not really interested.  I really don’t like it when games do this whole Pikmin thing. Majora’s Mask was the same way too; I still enjoyed both, but would’ve much more without the silly countdown timer.

I dunno, maybe the game will be good, but sick of lightning and never really liked her to begin with.

    • SantiagodelosSantos

I thought the MM clock worked quite well. The opposite is true for me with pikmin 1 though

    • Suicunesol

The countdown in Majora’s Mask was awesome. It gave the game an atmosphere that no other game had before or has had since.

Excuse me for going off topic… *slaps self*

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Liam-Tasker/100001058852010 Liam Tasker

Three FFXIII games made and released before FF Versus XIIII, anyone else see a problem here? Also if they’re promoting this we’re probably not gettng any versus news at TGS..

    • LynxAmali

      DROP IT.

      Geez.

It’ll come out when it’s ready, unless you want a crappy product. At this point, might as well call it FFXV.

      • Zeromus321

Either way, with how long it’s been in development i will continue to be concerned about it until I sit down and I’am actually playing it. Cause at this point I would not be surprised if Square-Enix decide to call it  “Final Fantasy Forever” instead.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Liam-Tasker/100001058852010 Liam Tasker

Drop it? I’m voicing my opinion, which is the point of these comments

        • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

But the thing is that so many people keep talking about Versus and derail the topic of the thread. Ishaan also posted a notification in the latest 13-3 thread (newer than this one) regarding this issue.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Liam-Tasker/100001058852010 Liam Tasker

I was just comparing the length of each games development. people are comparing the countdown to Majora’s Mask and Pikmin so i didn’t think it was an issue

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

The issue isn’t about comparing things; it’s about how people just can’t stop mentioning about Versus in a thread that isn’t even about it.

        • LynxAmali

This isn’t a thread about Versus.

I’m tired of seeing all these god damn comments complaining about ‘Why no Versus,’ ‘what about Versus’ and ‘when’s Versus coming’ in a god damn XIII article.

As you can see, I’m pissed.
Because well, unbeknownst to you, there are people who actually enjoyed XIII and would like to know how it ends!

          I know, hard concept.
People having different opinions then you and all.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Okay okay, calm down. You’ve made your points, so let’s all try to avoid friction here.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Liam-Tasker/100001058852010 Liam Tasker

I’m allowed to have an opinion. I’m not sorry that you took it personally and I’ve never mentioned anything about FFXIII on this site ’til now so I don’t appreciate being told to drop it.
I mentioned FFXIII in the comment and then compared it to another game just like a lot of other people.
I actually kept with the FF theme with my comment unlike a lot of people who compared it to Zelda which is a bit more off topic.
Just because I mentioned Versus doesn’t make me some troll and I liked XIII, they’re not mutually exclusive, if you don’t like people voicing comments in a comment section then don’t scroll past the news story, we’re all people, we’re all different.
Don’t attack people for writing something you’ve heard someone say before, it might be new to the other person

      • Spider-Man

With around 6 years of development, it’d better not be crappy.

    • Herok♞

You can’t say that for all you know Versus could be out tomorrow so until its released you can’t say it which was out first. also different teams handle different projects so it doesn’t matter since its not like they are stealing Versus team members to do other things. the only thing Versus not being prevents is KH3 being made since they share the same team.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Angello-Alarcon/100000147285675 Angello Alarcon

From the live stream it all looks very promising. :) Finally, Lightning isn’t just the cover girl.

  • Kira Yamato

Wow, it just keeps getting better. Looks like this should hold us off until Versus XIII comes out.

    • TheDarkEmpress

       PFAHAHAHA…

  • Paradox me

I really don’t know what to think.

We finally have access to all of the main characters after XIII-2 and they make this game a solo affair with Lightning, who was just about non-existent in the previous game. Set hundreds of years after XIII-2 and in an all-new location (are we pretending XIII-2 never happened?). Costumes and other character customization. Oh, and a doomsday countdown? I don’t like being rushed in games, especially if that time will be used as a form of currency you must manage.

I don’t know. I feel like they should have been more consistent in something that’s supposed to be Lightning’s Saga. XIII and XIII-2 already felt disjointed due to significant changes in game design and style, and now this?

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Darn that far later? I guess that means theres NoHope shipping.

Anyway hope we get a good cast of character, dont know how I feel about more control on Lightning.

  • Souji Tendou

Oh Mai Gawd! They seriously gonna makea trilogy??? O_o
Oh well… whatever floats your boat SquarEnix.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I have no clue what happened in XIII-2, but I’m hoping it’ll last me more than 13 days.
On another note, I like islands, but where are the wind turbines! You gotta have those!

  • http://thespellcraftcolumn.wordpress.com Rudolph Consuegra

This happens when you mess up a game.

    • Godmars

No, usually you just move on. This is literally beating a dead horse.

      • SantiagodelosSantos

I don’t think you used “literally” correctly

  • Elemiel

I have no idea what’s going on anymore.

  • Raze

i dont see the connection of ffxiii-2 and this… oh well i guess i ‘ll just have to wait for more updates in future

  • revenent hell

Ah how I have such a fondness for red dragons…Thank FFVIII for that anyhoo…Ill keep my hate to a minimum and just say…..I hope it has a decent story that has nothing to do with time loops and the idea of only having 13 days on the clock is bothersome to me as well…rpg’s require grinding im curious how this will play out

  • http://www.facebook.com/stale.laastad Ståle Laastad

I have not tried the sequel, did they fix the battle system?
the first five hours i was just pushing x, i could play the game with my eyes closed
    then i stopped playing.

    great graphics, weak system.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Try not mashing auto-battle then you do more than press X. That argument is seriously old and busted at this point.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

Turn off auto battle and see how long that works.

  • Lazulis

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII? SE, how dare you! This isn’t easy to abbreviate! LR: FF13 looks weiiiird~!

On a more serious note: Lightning Saga? so 13, 13-2, & LR:13 is the saga? SE where are you even going with this? What about the end of 13-2? The characters? Can 13-2 really be even part of the Lightning Saga, because she wasn’t there that much…?

And world driven? Um…wow. Islands with completely different ecosystems, closely connected by a rail system? Um…uh huh. What a…world…

I’m kinda sick of seeing Lightning everywhere honestly, then again, I was never a big fan of her in the first place…:/

  • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

A limited ammount of time to save the world a la Majora’s Mask? I like it!

Now for the hurting question, there’ll be DLC?

    • Zeromus321

It will probably end with a “to be continued” but this time it will have a Dragon Ball Z type narrative showing the next episode “NEXT TIME ON FINAL FANTASY 13-3 EPISODE 2″…………. then it will end with “PAY 5 DOLLARS TO SEE THIS NEXT EPISODE!!!!”

      • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

While I see a true ending being released as DLC coming I think they stated that this is the final game of Lightning’s saga. (Gladly, they’ve focused on XIII way too much for a good while)

        • Zeromus321

I hope so, while i don’t mind lightning. I’am getting sick of her basically being the new Square-Enix mascot. (I miss my Moogle) :(

          • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

            Same here.
Im not irked at the fact that XIII is getting more direct sequels, what bugs me is that it got a high focus the recent years. A break would have been a good idea, that way they would’ve focused on Versus and else projects instead of posposting it further and after a while Light would’ve returned from a refreshing break.

  • Tristan Diaz

Platforms were announced, it comes out for XBOX 360 and PS3.

  • TheDarkEmpress

I usually don’t intend to be negative…but as a disgruntled fan of the series currently I think it’s my duty to say that this looks freaking horrible and stupid beyond all reason. XIII was a letdown, XIII-2 was another failed attempt that was poorly done (different weapons = palette swaps? what is this, a 2D fighter from 95?) and now SE is just making it painfully evident that they wish to turn a likeable protagonist into nothing more than a cash cow instead of making a good game. Disappointed, as usual. Anything involving SE henceforth will garner nothing else but a “VSXIII pl0x?” from me.

How hard is it to release this game? SE is going to potentially have pumped out 3 terrible installments to ONE game before VSXIII even gets a release date…I already know VSXIII (if it ever comes out) will never live up to the monumental expectations placed on it for being in development for so long, but my god it better be one of the best damn games I’ve ever played or I will never buy another SE product again, hah.

    • Foofin Around

” this looks freaking horrible ” and “what is this, a 2D fighter from 95″

      Really?  Like no, seriously.  Really?

We have almost no information on this new 13 installment.  None, nada, zip.  And you think it looks “freaking horrible and stupid beyond all reason.”

Based on what now, exactly?  Because, as a fan of the series, I’m looking forward to this game being released.  Believe it or not, some people really enjoyed 13 and 13-2.

And how you get a 2-D fighter out of this, I have no clue.  If you could enlighten me on that part, please do.

Ain’t this the city from versus XIII?
     o.O

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001720263848 Wes Vaz

No, this is Academia from XIII-2

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

“A New Final Fantasy XIII JRPG from Square-Enix! Now with more holy chunks of Lightning and a healthy splash of Darksiders II and Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask! Coming soon to a console near you!!”

Hmm… Sounds like it has way more action gameplay than normal. Jumping, hanging from ledges, ducking, taking cover, player-controlled position movement during battle, etc. But since everything was just pictures and not a video (I was reading the liveblog), I’m still skeptical until proven otherwise. I guess TGS later this month will reveal a bit more.

  • Raze

how bout letting Lightning take a break and let Noctis hog all the spotlight this time huh SE?

    • Luna Kazemaru

Lol I new we would get comments like this man.

      • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

        Which is something bad?

  • kool_cid414

Just fyi, The official site list the game is coming out for both ps3 and 360

  • Zeromus321

Ugh, another Final Fantasy 13 game can’t say I’m shocked after how 13-2 ended. While I hate Final Fantasy 13 and 13-2 and consider them the weakest in the Final Fantasy series. I’am glad for those wanted a conclusion to the story. So grats to those who wanted a conclusion to the 13/lightning story-arc.

  • Suicunesol

    That was lightning fast…

This new information really gives me the impression that this game is going to be an action RPG. More control over Lightning? That’s got to mean an action RPG. Centered around Lightning? Costumes for Lightning? Lightninglightninglightning.

Unlike others, I’m actually a little interested in seeing where this goes…

  • http://www.facebook.com/ajvirrey Armand John Virrey

I am sensing a Dirge of Cerberus type of gameplay..XD

    • LustEnvy

They’ve stated that it’s an improved system from the first two games, so I don’t expect full action gameplay.

      • Paradox me

“Square has completely swept away the menu-driven, hands-off system that served so effectively in the first two chapters of FFXIII, pouring its resources instead into a system that allows players to control Lightning directly in single combat against foes.

Menus are out. Instead, players instead can assign four skills or commands to the controller’s face buttons and execute them instantly.”

        • LustEnvy

Oh. Well then, here’s hoping it’s not like a watered down TPS (DoC), but more like a flashy Kingdom Hearts meets Devil May Cry. I’d be down for that. Final Fantasy (post-Advent Children) has shown the characters to be flashy as all hell during cutscenes), and it needs to be translated properly to gaming.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

    Yes!!!
    Can’t wait for Lightning Returns!!!
Wish they’ve showed us the trailer in the livestream.

  • Claire Oga

So when is Lightning going to save Fang and Vanille from crystal stasis? The story now really diverge from what I expected after FF13.

  • Herok♞

I like what I see so far but then again I was a fan of FF13 and FF13-2 so I may be a little biased, since I like the games and don’t have blind hate for anything FF13. Also the battle system was good in the other games so I hope it stays, because after all it was as deep as you wanted it to be. do you want to mash auto battle and move on with the story you can do that or if you want you can manually do everything adding a level of challenge and complexity to combat, I wish more games would do something like that seeing as some fights were hard even using auto-battle.

    • Foofin Around

I couldn’t agree with your statement more. (But of course, you already knew that.)  The battle system in past games indeed very complex (especially in the optional late-game stuff), and you were rewarded by choosing your commands sometimes!  It really was great, and it doesn’t deserve the hate. (And looky there, I rhymed without even trying. lol)

Now with that said, I don’t know if we will see the same battle system.  The customization the article mentions, as well as every action contributing to a countdown, makes me feel like they might go in a new direction with the combat.  Which could be both good and bad.

If they kept the old combat and maybe even added an extra layer to it (and brought back the move Haste), then that would be wonderful.  But if they did a more real time action kind of thing, I would be pretty cool with that as well.  It’ll be interesting to see what they mean by all that customization beyond just costumes. (^_^)

      • Herok♞

Well FF13-2 had a good bit of customization since you could put accessories on your monster and change them whenever so they could do something like that. Also they did give alot of control over how our characters expanded since you get all the roles early and then can go from there.

        • Foofin Around

Oh, 13-2 had a very nice load of customization!  I was just stating how I thought the article made it seem to me like it would involve a different battle system or something.  And after watching the videos and checking around the net, it looks like that’ll be the case.  Sorry for that confusion! (;^_^)

          • Herok♞

its fine and as much as I love the ATB, I like where the new battle system is going.

          • Foofin Around

Yeah, it definitely seems interesting from what little description we’ve gotten so far!  I’m really interested to see just how they do the control layout though, as well as what different commands and abilities are available.  While the descriptions have been vague, they’ve left a lot of room for potential. (^_^)

  • imaguni

As much as I love Lightning, I can’t say I’m all that excited, honestly. I am intrigued, however. I do like the concept art a lot and the preliminary gameplay details we’ve gotten have potential.

My biggest concern, however, is the storyline and how things will wrap up. I’d like some guarantee that unanswered questions and unsolved mysteries will be addressed. Simply bringing Lightning back and putting the focus on her again quite simply isn’t enough.

  • http://www.geekrevolt.com/ DeShaun Zollicoffer

Guys Versus isn’t even worth mentioning anymore. SE treats their fans like a bunch of idiots, bragging about how great the game is coming along while refusing to show off new footage.

When the game does surface it won’t be called FF Versus XIII, with these three games they’ll drop the XIII from it’s name because it will confuse the average gamer. Where’s Lightning? But yeah, let’s just forget all about it.

Canceling it may be the best thing to do because it won’t live up to the hype. Games with huge delay times are judged harshly, just take a look at DNF. It was bad, but not 1/10 bad — but reviewers went ham because of it’s “unicorn” status.

On Topic: This actually sounds cool, I like Lightning.

    • Paradox me

I’d rather Versus XIII not be cancelled simply because people have no self control and can’t keep their expectations in check.

So it reviews poorly, big deal. It looks great, so give it to me and I’ll decide whether or not my $60 was well spent.

      • Luna Kazemaru

‘I’d rather Versus XIII not be cancelled simply because people have no self control and can’t keep their expectations in check. ‘

thank you someone with a brain.

      • http://www.geekrevolt.com/ DeShaun Zollicoffer

This is a post for Lightning Returns so I’ll just keep it short: You can’t blame the fans for getting upset, SE should have never announced the game if they couldn’t deliver it in a timely manner. Apologist may call it whining, moaning, etc, but it’s just putting your foot down and saying — enough already.

Anyway, this game sounds cool and that’s all that really matters. Hopefully they can wrap the story up and send Lightning out in style.

    • Tom_Phoenix

DNF wasn’t judged harshly beacuse of the numerous delays. It was judged harshly beacuse the end product was a cookie-cutter modern shooter that went against everything that made Duke Nukem 3D enjoyable.

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I’d highly recommend you guys watch the full presentation in English here: http://bit.ly/UhOfRM

    • Foofin Around

Well, I enjoyed all of those videos.  It looks like other people here haven’t even checked though. (;>.>)

Regardless, thank you for posting all of this so soon.  I’ve enjoyed this whole “reveal,” and I can’t wait for more. (^_^)

  • Riian

This actually sounds really promising, though the whole doomsday countdown reminds me of Majora’s Mask, which I never really bothered finishing because of this.

The gameplay sounds cool, too, and I hope people will set aside their FFXIII preconceptions and actually give this a chance.

    • http://twitter.com/alixraen alixraen

While I understand your point about the preconceived notions, I don’t believe those who were turned off by XIII and/or XIII-2 are liable to look at this with an open mind at all.

It’s like getting smacked with a table leg and baseball bat, and then getting asked if they would like to move on to the sledgehammer. To those who didn’t like it, why would two bad turns deserve a third?

    • KingGunblader

Look buddy, I’m on your side. I beat both XIII’s and I’m THIS CLOSE to getting the Platinum trophy for -2. But let’s be real: People who didn’t like the last two are NOT going to buy this, period. And why do you want them too? Let them chew on their hands waiting for Vs XIII / KH3, and enjoy the game for yourself.

  • SirRichard

I’m rather interested in the world and the 13 days mechanic, that adds a nice feeling of dread and the need for haste to everything. If they execute it that way, at least.

What I read elsewhere about the combat, not sure how I feel about it until they actually show us it, because at worst it sounds like what we have now with more QTEs and at best it sounds like something much closer to Kingdom Hearts. Then again, it is 5AM so I’m probably not reading straight.

The title still gets me, though; “Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII”? Seriously, guys? Doesn’t quite roll off the tongue like “Batman Returns” or whatever, does it?

  • personablaze

Oh So this is kinda like Zelda Majora’s Mask?…Cool :)

  • https://twitter.com/#!/Shadows_Desire Shadows_Desire

Damn it square you always find a way to take my money lol.But for real this looks amazing and thats just art! I can’t wait to see the gameplay of this game and I want to see how this timer system works.

  • Xapth

Maybe I’m just a fanboy but I really like what I’m seeing so far.
The official site says it’s coming out for PS3 & Xbox 360.

The most interesting concept is the 13 days timer.

I suppose if we find ourselves running out of time, we can just play the Song of Time, right?

    • komiko12

Well, 7 Days timer is already used many times.

      • T-X

Psh* Link saved his world in Three Days so…wat eva

  • http://twitter.com/alixraen alixraen

I’m not even going to get started here. I’m not even going to give this game the benefit of the doubt.

    Skip, forget, relegate to history.

    • Riian

That’s awfully petty of you :(

We’ve barely seen anything beyond some concept art and pre-release info, and you’re already passing judgement? Please…

      • Luna Kazemaru

logic doesn’t work for mad people

        • http://twitter.com/alixraen alixraen

I’ll redirect you to my reply to Riian before you can get out anymore snarky comments.

          • Luna Kazemaru

well played but that comment wasn’t just about you and yes I’m usually a snarky person.

      • kupomogli

I don’t think he/she needs to.  It’s Final Fantasy 13.  Isn’t that enough to go on?  It is for me.

        • Riian

It really isn’t. You’re negatively judging a game because its’ previous entries didn’t live up to your particular expectations, even though it’s being developed with an entirely different approach, based on pre-release information alone, and that’s just all sorts of ridiculously self entitled.

          • ProfoundBadness

Self entitled? What a ridiculous argument. Not buying a sequel to a game that one didn’t like is simple, smart consumerism. Who cares if it’s being developed with a different approach? Same character, most likely the same director/producers/writers as FF XIII and FF XIII-2. I don’t care if Lightning fans are getting another game or not, personally,  but for people who are getting sick and tired of it, there is a good reason. They want more Final Fantasy, not Final Fantasy XIII and, in this case, Squeenix is continuing to push away from their wants. Once again, it’s not entitlement, it’s wanting a company (that we have funded) to once again make the kinds of games one loved them for.

        • Herok♞

Yeah that’s just you, believe it or not there are people in the world that aren’t you and for them it being FF13 guarantees a instant buy.

      • http://twitter.com/alixraen alixraen

I’ve finished XIII. It wasn’t my favorite, but I soldiered through it.

I tried XIII-2. I wanted to like it, I really did, but I just couldn’t do it. I didn’t finish it.

I can’t imagine right now that this game will do anything for me, even if it *is* radically different. I’m just so burnt out on the Lightning Saga.

  • Alex Cattaneo

Lame! STOP this crap SE its over Final Fantasy is noo more!

  • komiko12

I don’t know… How about the Cocoons and Pulse?
    Those worlds are still usable.

  • http://ggftw.com/forum/ Monkey_T

Square Enix, you sure know how to get into my wallet.
I’ll be saving my hype for when I see some real gameplay though.

  • kupomogli

Yes!  My favorite Final Fantasy “returns” for another entry!  More hallways and gameplay that recommends auto battle please.

    • Riian

This one’s apparently a real-time action-RPG with a free roaming world, so probably not

      • kupomogli

Well. Hopefully it’s an action RPG with a lot of hallways.

I’ve always wanted to see a Devil May Cry style Final Fantasy, but why Lightning? They could make a Dirge of Cerberus 2 and actually rip Devil May Cry off. Vincent is awesome. Or Cloud. Cloud, plus DMC gameplay, would sell like hotcakes.

FF13 is easily one of the worst selling Final Fantasy titles with atleast 50% of the fanbase being pretty vocal about their hatred of the FF13 series. Why are you doing this Squaresoft? Are you really trying to kill the series because that’s what it looks like you’re doing?

        • D H

I know know how selling half as many copies as Final Fantasy VII has in it’s lifetime in under 3 years makes it the “worst selling Final Fantasy” ever… 85% on GameRankings, 84 on Metacritic, many review scores pushing 9/10 or better.  Yes, the group that hates XIII is very vocal, but it honestly doesn’t seem like most of the world cares.  Just because you don’t like something, let us not make up false accusations and assumptions about things based just on that, yeah?

          • kupomogli

One of the worst selling since the series has became popular.  I guarantee FF13 won’t outsell FF7, 8, or 10.  There’s the very low possibility that it might outsell 9 and 12, but I think FF13 is done and any sales it makes won’t push it too far ahead than it already is.

Once a certain point passes on game’s release it’s like the point of no return. Sales won’t even make the smallest noticeable increase. There’s games like Valkyria Chronicles that might get amazing unknown game sales spike, but you don’t honestly think that’s going to happen with a Final Fantasy game do you?

So my comment was indeed fact. No false accusations or assumptions.

          • Tom_Phoenix

XIII primarily sold on hype; it was one of the most anticipated games in the series and some people bought PS3′s AT LAUNCH just to be able to play it. So, initially, the game sold very well. But once the bad word of mouth spread, the sales died FAST; used copies flooded the market while retailers rapidly slashed it’s price.

So while XIII did sell a lot of copies, the ensuing backlash caused significant damage to the FF brand as a whole. As a result, when XIII-2 was announced, the public’s reception was very cold and reserved. This was also reflected in the game’s sales, which were EXTREMELY poor for a mainline FF title.

Raw numbers don’t always tell the whole story; you need to put things into context in order to see what the big picture is.

        • T-X

Uh, your DMC styled FF would actually  just be a KH styled FF like Versus will be. Maybe SE got smart and noticed Action RPGs are very entertaining.

    • Herok♞

These two “arguments” died with FF13-2 since it was open world and there was an option to turn auto battle off. If you are going to hate on something at least be informed about it and have up to date info. Yes you made it clear you dislike FF 13 but, I don’t see the point in making comments on articles about things you dislike if you aren’t going to post anything that is still relevant to the discussion.

  • Riian

But what about Noel, Hope and Serah’s story?

Srsly, I don’t think Serah and Snow even got married!

If this game’s taking place hundreds of years after XIII-2, what will happen to them?

    • http://www.facebook.com/robert.leonardi.56 Robert Leonardi

did you see the ending of XIII-2 before ? you’d know on what happen to serah

      • Riian

Yeah, I did, but I was expecting a sort of continuation to her story where Light, Hope and Noel would work towards bringing her back or something, idk

        • Claire Oga

I really hoped that Serah is dead. She is not FF material.

          • OatMatadoQuatro

Well, this is the second time that she dies. If they revive her again FF would turn into Dragon Ball Z

    • brian

      Hundreds?
It just mentioned that it’d be set “many” years after 13-2.

    • Sardorim

They will most likely appear again, after all they said that Lightning was to get a Happy End and if Hope and Serah don’t return than it isn’t really happy. Even Noel.

  • http://www.facebook.com/robert.leonardi.56 Robert Leonardi

as much as i am intrigued on how the story continues on the XIII series, i wish SE would give out more info on Versus =/, been more than a year without any updates

  • Ben Sylvia

When do we get a FF with Gilgamesh as the main character?

  • http://twitter.com/Neilikki Neilikki

    YES YES YES
Please, tell me it’s coming out in SPRING 2013, i want to play it NOW. NOW!!

    • Paradox me

Eh, if it’s out before the holidays then I’ll be a bit concerned. Toriyama has said that DLC will be necessary for releasing games in a timely manner, and by Spring it’ll hardly have been a year since XIII-2.

They need to take their time, polish it (XIII-2′s framerate was a bit choppy in most areas) and ship the entire story and all other meaningful content on the disc.

  • midgard229

can’t wait for this!!!!!!!! its gonna be awesome. Must see new gameplay!!!!

  • RmanX1000

    Where’d my wallet go?

    “Nee hee hee”
Oh Square… You mischief makers you…

  • Bentan

is it me or the gameplay description sounds like vs 13 haha…

  • Spider-Man

Majora’s Mask! Red Dragon Monster sure is a unique name. >_> I hope they don’t milk the XIII saga. Well, I guess they already are. Hopefully this is the last of the XIII saga. Lightning was never really interesting, but Serah was fine.

Three XIII games and nothing other than “Versus XIII is coming along nicely.” Oops, I meant XVersus.

    • T-X

Haha, I totally thought of Majora’s Mask too. Plus the look of the city and concept of the game reminds me of Kingdom Hearts and TWEWY’s Shibuya (along with the time and “world” theme).

  • Nickie

Wait, wait, wait. This is the last Final Fantasy 13? NOOOOOOOOOOOOoooo! I love the FFXIII series and was hoping it would continue more then just a trilogy. T^T Lightening is an awesome heroine and protagonist!

  • nothing956

I don’t know if its just me but it seems like they’re changing everything from the first 2 games except for lightning.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Looks ok so far, but I want to see more. Of course I’m going to play this game to the very end, BUT make me want to play this game Square. I mean REALLY make me want to play this game like you have done with so many other titles including Final Fantasy XIII-2. =)

  • Benny Tormoes

A longer development cycle could make these quickie sequels better, methinks. But what do I know…
Say what you will about the FFXIII games, but they sure are aesthetically pleasing :)

  • eilegz

the best rpg of this generation will get another new game :D

its going to be another great game until versus come

    • French

The best RPG of this Generation goes to either Lost Odyssey or any of the Tales games released at the period…. but thats just my opinion

      • Misty Dawson

Tales of Vesperia, hands down for me.

        • Valkenhayn

Over 150+ RPGs in my collection, and I second this notion

        • French

Currently playing now @Valkenhayn:disqus ! I had to pause playing for like 6 months due to class

  • l777l

Looking forward to FF XIII-14 where Lightning fights her last final battle.

  • Ace.Of Hearts♥

‘Red Dragon Monster’ O.o such a creative name?? the game looks really pretty and it seems interesting! (sorry I’m new to the FF series, I only know about the hot guys like Noctis and Cloud ) might try this when it comes out!

  • Tales_of_Master

Lightning Returns ? Couldn’t they pick a less cheesy name ? I’m not sure if I’m interested, but I hope the game will be good for the people who are interested.

  • Hraesvelgr

The “13 days” thing reminds me of Rudra no Hiho, actually. I couldn’t get into FFXIII, so I don’t think I’ll be playing this, but hopefully that 13 day mechanic will actually be implemented well.

  • enorka miho

I hope Noel, Snow, Hope and every one will be back…. But, if they do, its kind odd… Hmm.. Wonder how its going to happen…

Anyhow,There is one thing I love most, its the WORLD!! Man, now we have coccoon and the new world! More to explore..But, do we still have Gran Pulse? Hmm…

  • KingGunblader

I’m REALLY intrigued by the combat system in this game. Hopefully we’ll get a gameplay trailer at TGS.

‘Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII’… I like it. It’s better than XIII-3. :P

  • Neophoton

I daresay I’m interested in this installment. XIII-2 really didn’t hold my interest, but this one seems to have some appeal.

  • Speedo Redempteur

Excellent ..Gonna got this one …can’t wait to see how she will stop this ..We need protector noel as an ally to make a dream team

  • Learii

gosh when FF XIII gonna end lol there 3 of them now FF XIII,XIII-2 and this one?

  • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

Squeenix, you never learn, do you?

Well, more chuuni crap, I guess. Sorry but the first game is enough for me, I don’t care about Lightning’s final battle anymore. Just bring in vXIII so we can be one big happy chuuni family.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Please this thread is not a request or comment line about versus and we have already asked folks to keep this thread on topic.

      • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

No I’m not requesting for vXIII nor I want to talk about it, I’m just saying that they should release this game and vXIII so that the continuous flow of chuuni flow through the franchise. I mean, Nomura is directing vXIII, KH is a full chuuni game. XIII’s story so far is chuuni and feels really disconnected from each other. I guess they should rename the franchise Chuuni Fantasy.

I guess I should not hope for a game like XII from Squeenix anymore. With Nomura and Kitase on the helm, FF will continue to be a big chuuni fest.

        • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Do you mind using common terms? Using an uncommon slang without any explanation isn’t helping people understand what you said.

          • SeventhEvening

Chuuni, assuming he means 中二病 (lit. 2nd Year Middle school sickness/syndrome), is the way middle schoolers act (maybe US equivalent to an 8th grader?).
In general, it is a negative term used for wannabe delinquents, people who pretend to be dark….basically people who want to be cool and different (like a hipster maybe). It is kind of like delusion or darkness. I guess maybe the OP is using it like immaturity? Middle school-like? Delusional? I don’t know what he means at all even though I’m familiar with the slang.

  • Domii

This is the worst gaming news I’ve gotten in a while. I don’t understand why Square keep shooting themselves in the foot with FF13. Hasn’t it done enough damage to the FF brand? Just let it go square and focus on the good willed FFversus.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Tsk, tsk Domii. You know better :P.

Mod reviews the headline to see if this thread is about Versus. Doesn’t see that the title changed on him.

At least you are handing the ‘worst gaming news’ you have received in a while better than most.

      • Domii

Yeah I’m usually level headed when it comes to any gaming news or Company, but this has hurt me deeply as a fan of FF games. Just look at my avatar and you’ll see what I mean.

  • kevinposta

I think they’re taking FF13 sequels too far… Still the 13 days concept sounds nice, I guess.
I seriously have this feeling FF is very scared to move forward.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      Link been there done that
      http://i.qkme.me/35d3f1.jpg

      • kevinposta

Right, it’s been done before. However, it’s unlikely for games to actually do it so it’s a much needed feature that sets it apart from other products out there.
Not to say I think this game would be great, but on paper it’s sounding pretty decent so far.
Again, I think SE is taking FF13 IP too far…

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Know what would be crazy if Sora randomly shows up at the end of this game asking Her for help *hints of Kingdom hearts 3*. I’m not a fan of 13 nor any past 10 however. I did watch my friend play both “meh” the combat and story was bad  in my opinion but I got like the characters. Maybe now since they are changing it to Action RPG, its going to be better? idk ..Square been messing  up Final Fantasy lately I hope  they don’t mess up Dragon Quest

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594742092 Robert M Fenner

Well, now that the latest DQ is an incredibly grindy pay-to-play MMO….

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Altin-Bujupaj/1157167838 Altin Bujupaj

“…And right after that moving on to XIII-4 !”

I don’t know which is worse – either that they endorse us to buy DLC in a Final Fantasy Game or that they keep on releasing sequels for the probably worst entry in the Franchise instead of moving on and leave it behind. And never look back. Ever.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

“YOU”, as in yourself think it’s the worst, some people think otherwise. You make it sound like everyone think it’s the worst entry. You know what I think is the worst entry in the final fantasy franchise? XII. I hated that but other people may think otherwise.

      • Zeromus321

I hated both Final Fantasy 12 and 13. For me personally Final Fantasy 10 was the last good Final Fantasy, and my personal favorite of the series. AND I LIKED TIDUS…. just hated his english VA….. oh, how I hated his English VA.

        • Elemiel

           http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lfiTebewnc

          • Zeromus321

WHAT SICK SADISTIC PERSON MADE THIS VIDEO!?…lol jk. But seriously nice reply. It made me laugh.

        • SeventhEvening

X, by far, has the best pacing and writing of any of the titles. People complain about Tidus, but he experiences more growth and development than any of the other main protagonists. He really grows into a hero willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of the world. It was a really refreshing game, without even bringing mechanics into the discussion.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Altin-Bujupaj/1157167838 Altin Bujupaj

That brings me back to my first Point: The Game may look like a great wall painting, but thats about it. Good graphics do not justify that the game still is bad in all the other aspects such as pacing, gameplay, storytelling, etc.

XIII-2 fixed some flaws, but invited us to pay some cash, just to see something that should’ve been in the Game to begin with. May it be for the fact that almost every company out there relies on releasing DLC for their games, Final Fantasy, or other games in that Genre should be the last to do this.

It all boils down to opinions, but deep in myself, I know other entries that deserve more attention than XIII gets right now.

        • LynxAmali

          Once again, YOUR opinion.

I hated 7 with all my hate that was possible at the time and you don’t see me complaining about fans screaming for a 7 remake.

You can complain all you want but it’s not that hard to ignore.
          Just don’t buy it.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Altin-Bujupaj/1157167838 Altin Bujupaj

What makes you think that I am a fan of VII ? Along with XIII, I think VII is not that good either.

Yes, I can complain and I like to complain about things that do not look appropiate. That’s what this section here is good for – to state an opinion. I’d have come to the conclusion to not buy it by myself, but thanks for reminding me.

          • LynxAmali

-What makes you think that I am a fan of VII ? Along with XIII, I think VII is not that good either.

            Was I implying that? No.

I was using my own experience as an example of how if there’s something you don’t like, just don’t say it’s automatically the ‘worst’ title. I appreciate VII as it got me Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core which I absolutely love but I hate the original game but I don’t say it’s the ‘worst’ title or not very good because it is very good. I just didn’t enjoy it.

And I love how people completely ignore 1 when mentioning the ‘worst’ FF titles.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Altin-Bujupaj/1157167838 Altin Bujupaj

Granted, I played Crisis Core as well and thoroughly enjoyed the Gameplay and Story of Zack.

As for I (If you meant this), for its time it was quite an incredible game. I, just like early Ultima Games were a little new. For todays standards, the game just didn’t age very well.

    • thaKingRocka

DLC is far worse in my opinion.

    • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

I really hope you didn’t expect SE to just leave the end of FFXIII ‘to be continued.’

I understand you and many others may not have liked the game, but there are some people out there who liked both games.

It would be unfair to those fans to end the sub-series on a cliffhanger, just because majority said so. At least, I think so.

    • SeventhEvening

I didn’t mind XIII that much. It wasn’t the best entry in the series, but there were many that were much worse in the mechanics department and the story department. If you don’t like a Final Fantasy title, just give up and wait for the next one that will inevitably come. They can’t milk XIII forever. For me, I’m just glad a halfway decent numbered title is being milked as opposed to VIII.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dirtynator-Bouzalious/100000873394234 Dirtynator Bouzalious

One would think that the tits of the FF cow would have turned saggy by now and run out of milk but apparently they are more resilient than I thought… I understand the concept of profit for a company but this is turning to be just plain greed. I guess as long as people will keep paying for that milk they will keep abusing the poor cow. Does anyone know if we can accuse them for animal abuse btw?

  • http://twitter.com/Neilikki Neilikki

Why can’t people just ignore thing they don’t like or don’t want? That’s what I always do, and it’s a flawless tactic. I focus on things that make me happy and when I’m not interested in something or I dislike it, I just ignore it so I don’t ruin other peoples fun.
Is it that hard? I don’t understand.

    • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Criticism is understandable, and can even be productive if it’s done properly. Of course, that’s precisely the hard part for many…

    • kevinposta

Here’s the thing: I think everyone should voice their opinions but in a mature way. Many people just don’t seem to be very self-contained or feel like being cynical is all radical, yo.
There’s no need to censor our opinions as long as we voice them properly.

However, in the face of how people react… I’d have to say it’s more a fact they need to stay silent due to their inability to word their opinions than they dislike the product :AA

      • http://twitter.com/Neilikki Neilikki

The thing is, I agree that criticism isn’t absolutely unnecessary, but everytime there is an article or video or anything related to Final Fantasy, or even to Square in general, like 80% of the comments are always along the lines of “Final Fantasy is dead”, “Give us Versus”, “Square destroyed FF franchise”, “give us FFVII remake”, “last good FF was 7, why do you even bother”, “last good FF was X” and so so on.
The point is, why even come to the thread if all the person wants to do is whine?
If there is one thing I absolutely hate about modern Final Fantasy, it’s its fanbase. Or at least majority of it. I mean, a lot of people here are reasonable, but it’s rare to see that.

        • kevinposta

Yeah, I see what you mean.
I want to give people the -right- to voice their opinion but they don’t just voice, many yell whine and cry much of the time.
It’s like Batman said: “Some people just want to see the world burn.”

          • Dhana Pinder

Very true. Its like they just want to pretend they are the internet critics we see that are fun, but at least those critics have their own opinion and their own voice with reasonable facts to why they dislike something. Many of the fan base tend to piggy back off another’s opinion just to make it seem like their own. Its own thing to agree, but its another to give a reason why without understanding what other people are trying to say and thats one of my biggest problems with the fanbase of Final Fantasy.

I love Final Fantasy and I love the ideas Square gives them, my own complaint I have is that it feels as if they rush the games when developing. I like change because it help open ones mind to the possibilities. Alot of people bash the idea because its not what they are use to. Get this people, its a GAME, a game that we all love and enjoy, but stop acting like you’re the ones developing and creating it. If you think you can do a better job of making, prove it. If you can’t stop complaining and play. If you dont like it, okay, dont play it at all. It’s that’s simple.

    Luke Skywalker Returns: Star Wars
I bet George Lucas is upset that he didn’t think of it first…or maybe not..

  • Jonathan Keycross

So this is the end of Lightning`s saga but not the end of the FFXIII franchise?
So there are plans to continue exploring that universe?
Meaning new characters in the spotlight?
Or perhaps a new entry that is being developed in the shadows?
What other entry could it be?
    Versus?
Wait…they´re going to release Versus after this entry?!
    Huzzah!
    [/delusional]

Well considering the only bad thing I´ve read about these news is the use of the FFXII name, what has been revealed does indicate this game is trying to deliver something new to the franchise, which is a good thing. I hope they´ll be able to handle the new mechanics they plan to integrate.

    • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

I think it’s safe to say this is the end of the franchise. I don’t remember hearing anything about the continuation of anything else.

-On another note, I see the three games as ‘trying something new.’ All three games look and feel (the first two games) drastically different. I see it as using XIII to try out tricks and perks. Once the game releases and the reviews and impressions are seen, then they can get a feel of what people really want, in a new Final Fantasy, over using tried-and-true methods.

      • kevinposta

I think I heard somewhere they wanted Final Fantasy XIII Type-(number) to become it’s own sub series. I believe they trademarked Type 1 and Type 2. If so, then that’d be a way to keep expanding (milking) the FF13 lore.

        • SeventhEvening

Don’t forget Versus. That is, assuming it ever comes out.

  • Karin Shita

Is Lightning gonna play the ocarina to reset the time?? XD

    • Happy Gamer

lmao i juss wrote a post about Majora before I read this and I juss LOLed

  • https://twitter.com/#!/JadenPrinceton C.Guzman

I don’t know how to feel about this yet. I’ll probably get it, but only because of my OCD with having incomplete series (err, not sure if that’s the right way to say it.)

The red dragon monster looks really cool.

  • Anime10121

Well, sounds interesting to me, so Im game :)

Though I do hope that more than just Lightning comes back, although with the premise of the story being what I think it is, I doubt anyone comes back besides Light ,no matter how much I want Serah, Noel, Sazh, Fang, and Vanille back).

  • Happy Gamer

I wonder if this will be a super departure story wise AGAIN from the original/XIII-2.

The thing about XIII series I really disliked was the fact that XIII and the sequal just seemed…i dunno so incoherent.

Why do I feel like all of a sudden they will totally drop the ending of Serah and Noel and suddenly she is in Termina (Majora’s Mask) wakes up in front of Coccoon from XIII and it was all a dream
