  • Heads up to everyone in here. Let’s not whine about Versus XIII and stay on track with discussion about Lightning Returns instead. If you have nothing to discuss, then don’t say anything. We’ll be keeping an eye on this comment thread.

    • topdog2007

here one question how the battle system going to be like is it going to be like the preserves final fantasy XIII system or some thing new I HOPE SO PLEASES do but i can’t wait to get this game i like lighting one tough chick wink wink nudge nudge

      • Paradox me

I posted this in the previous article, but:

“Square has completely swept away the menu-driven, hands-off system that served so effectively in the first two chapters of FFXIII, pouring its resources instead into a system that allows players to control Lightning directly in single combat against foes.

Menus are out. Instead, players instead can assign four skills or commands to the controller’s face buttons and execute them instantly.”

        • Riian

Kinda like KH 1&2’s shortcut system. Sounds cool.

        • topdog2007

           so like kingdom hearts then?

          • LightZero

Reminds me of Type 0 more than it does KH but yeah.

  • revenent hell

Ok I cant be the only one who thinks “kingdom Hearts” when I see the “town”…..

  • negineBIT

Actually, I’m pretty excited with this title. Lightning is totally a badass character.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

Shes Cloud and Squall love child

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

“Can’t have lighting without Clouds” I hope third time’s a charm

  • DuskSharkEX

Here’s hoping for game play footage soon! :D

  • Long-awaited answers? I will admit this game looks good, hopefully it won’t lock out people who didn’t play XIII-2, if it can take the battle system from the XIII and exploration from XIII-2 and improve on the story(have a proper ending) then this game could be really great..I’m actually excited for Final Fantasy again

    • Aqua King

The battle system will be completely different, players will only control lighting and it will be an action driven battle system (I’d assume more similar to that of Kingdom Hearts or Dirge of Cerberus) and not like the two previous games.

      •  Kingdom hearts battle style? Even better

  • Nicolas Vasquez

SE dont know what they are saying now, with that tech demo they showed at E3 they said they were taking FF in a different direction, yet the next one is this a continuation of FFXIII wich is the least favorite among fans, not to mention they did say FFXII-2 would give a closure to ligthing story wich is a clear case of false advertising.

    • Sardorim

Least favorite? I wouldn’t say that. Years later you’ll see the XIII series remade over and over again like all the others and fans will eat it up.

      • Nicolas Vasquez

i never said it was or going to be financial unsuccesfull, but thats all because of the brand, not really the content of the game.

        • Paradox me

Final Fantasy XIII surely benefited from the Final Fantasy brand (as well as being the series’ debut on current generation hardware), but XIII-2 and Lightning Returns? Not nearly as much. They’ll sell based on folks’ impressions of previous entries in this subset as well as any purported improvements/differences (i.e. their content).

This is especially true with Final Fantasy XIII’s sequels. The original was met with scathing criticism from many fans, so it’s not very likely that these people will buy direct sequels simply because it says Final Fantasy on the cover.

  • Xapth

I enjoyed XIII-2 so I’m really looking forward to this next entry.

Lightning is so cool too, so I’m glad to see her return to the spotlight.

Ahhhhh I can’t wait! I’m craving more information already!

    • Sardorim

She better return, I hated that she was pushed to a side role in XIII-2 even though she was plastered everywhere. My friends were confused as heck when they weren’t using her but her sister.

  • Lazulis

Wow, they’re really pushing the whole Lightning is a strong female character and is totally awesome, and godly, and brave, and hopeful stuff, aren’t they? I mean, they are really laying it heavy…

The time system sounds kinda cool, but the locked in a certain area thing sounds really troublesome. Imagine if you saved in the area, but found out that you were locked in and then had to just stand around to wait for the gate to open. The time reversing thing reminds me of Half Minute Hero in a way.

The whole village thing reminds me of Harvest Moon & Xenoblade, with the whole night & day thing, villagers going to sleep, monsters are more dangerous, etc. I wonder what SE will do to make it different to anything else out there (even on the internet), other than those locked gates.
I’m still not willing to suspend my disbelief about those islands. That one island has a big city, a big forest, cliffs & a dessert??? I mean…wha…? This is the last XIII game, so the other characters should make an appearance right?Offtopic: The text they used for Lightning returns looks like Terminator text or something, and it just kinda takes me out of the whole FF mood, for some reason. Idk, I’m weird.

  • GILGAMESH FAN KING is disappoint.

  • DanteJones

From the small amount of info we got I’m actually looking forward to hearing more about this. The concept art is interesting and I loved that oil painting they showed during the live stream (though it isn’t in the YouTube videos for some reason..).

    • Suicunesol

Where did they show the oil painting? In the youtube videos it was in there, but they refused to show it. o_0

  • ShawnOtakuSomething
  • Detrimont

i like how they used Cloister Black as the font in the art director video. Mostly because the L in Luxerion become Death Note L

  • Aqua King

While XIII has had its fair share of criticism, it had a lot of good merits (or selling points, if you will) I feel though that Lightning is not near the top of this list and I’m saddened to find out that this game (albeit, not surprised) is revolving around her. Maybe she appeals better to the Japanese audience. I am very excited about some of the features being added to this game. Dressphere (X-2) like abilities, interchangeable weapons (XIII-versus) and most notably the world changing on a clock. (The three points explained by the Game Design Director) I am not really sure if I like the ‘constant time ticking towards the world ending. I really don’t like ‘time-limits’ being placed in games (with the exception of certain missions or battles) But the whole doomclock theory placed on the entirety of the game? Not a big fan of the idea. I’m also thinking gameplay will be similar to VII: Dirge of Cerberus and I’m not a big fan of the whole ‘one player action RPG’ type gameplay. I honesty was expecting XIII-3 and honestly after watching these videos I probably would prefer it to be a trilogy instead of taking this drastic change. I really do not like games with Facebook connectivity and would rather not see this in any game, I do hope this is not something majorly implanted into the game and is more like the optional connectivity of XIII-2. But, time will tell and I will probably still buy this game… I’m just pretty much sad that we have to continue Lightning’s adventure and not Fang or Serah’s. :/

  • Ty Austin

I guess Lightning struck the same place twice for the first time, SNAP!

  • I was enjoying Toriyama’s presentation with a few flaws here and there… That is until he brought up Facebook….

  • Suicunesol

Who else watched all four videos? I did. I’m actually intrigued. I have a feeling that I’m going to skip XIII-2, but might give XIII-3 a shot. If the developers do it right, it could actually be really great. So I’m going to give this game a shot when it comes out and hope for the best.

I do have to say, though, that their vision seems very, very vague. They mentioned a world that moves on its own, with people who have their own schedules and lives at certain times and certain days in a time when the world is about to end. And then they say no other game has done something like it before. That is certainly false as all Zelda fans know. I don’t know if their words should be taken literally, or if they’re just exaggerating with highfalutin metaphors.

    • “they say no other game has done something like it before”

It’s just the name but the concept already exists in games like Zelda and Elder Scrolls… They’re just hyping the game up using that…

  • Square had so much hope for XIII to be their next big thing, it’s too bad it didn’t turn out that way. Still, looks good, personally I’ve enjoy the XIII saga thus far so lets see what they can do for the finale.

  • imaguni

Well… Can’t help but thank you guys for the post because all these details have made me more optimistic about Lightning Returns. Lots of interesting information I missed while watching the stream. It seems we’re visiting a world fully merged with Valhalla going from details in the presentation, which should be interesting.

  • ArcadiaSymphonia

If they ever auction any of those props i would put a bid on all of them!!!

  • brian yep

Does anyone else absolutely hate this new logo?

    • RmanX1000

You’re seriously complaining about the logo…? THE LOGO.

      • nitpicking lol

        •  It’s a matter of personal preference, really. I always looked to the logos of FF games with antecipation, knowing they depicted game events. The beautiful Amano artwork was always a plus.

The game may turn out to be amazing, but I think the logo is awful myself. One thing may not be related to the other in any way, but that doesn’t mean I have to like the logo. It looks awful in fact, I hope they reconsider it and get Amano to work on sum nice image to go along with it :)

    • Aqua King

      it’s pretty bad.

  • Claire Oga

It’s like FFXIII-2 didn’t even exist. Where is this story going anyway?

    • Paradox me

I have a sneaking suspicion that Final Fantasy XIII-2 isn’t quite “Lightning’s Saga” and that we’ll get “Serah’s Saga” (i.e. XIII-3) after Lightning Returns releases.

Hopefully I’m wrong and Lightning Returns wraps up the entire story.

      • Claire Oga

I hoped Lightning Returns help clarity the entire story. FFXIII-2 was riddled with holes too much to count and the story line did an entire 180 following FFXIII -Episode i-.

      •  No more Final Fantasy XIII, please…I’m hoping this is the last one :/

Game looks interesting, but it’s about time they just move on. Give the story some closure, and move on.

  • Herok♞

Wow, with what I have seen and read so far, this seems like not just the best FF game in a long time but also the best square game, I just hope everything they said can be pulled off well.

  • RmanX1000

Buying day 1. Love Lightning and the XIII Saga.

  • amagidyne

Thought #1: I feel kind of bad for hating Motomu Toriyama. He seems sincere enough and I’ll bet he’s worked hard to get where he is and continues to do so. That still doesn’t mean I’m going to stop.

    Thought #2: ENOUGH PROPS. JESUS.

Thought #3: I would really like it if, at the middle or end of this game, some twist were revealed that completely changes (and justifies) everything that has happened in this story. Everything that looked like complete gibberish turns out to have been part of the plan, setting up our expectations in order to brutally subvert them and deliver a mind-blowing 1000-hour epic.

Or maybe they could just have some okay writing here and there sometimes. Then again, since I adore Lightning (as a character! PLATONICALLY!) and the art looks nice and the game design sounds interesting, I’ll probably end up playing this regardless. No matter how bad it can get, at least it will be less stupid than Assassin’s Creed.

    • Laharl

You shouldn’t feel bad for hating him, he wrote “The 3rd Birthday”

Very nice… i like the ideas they have and hopefully it will be a wonderful game :)

    • Leo Garcia

y sure its the worst ff of the series deal with it.

      • What is your problem with all this negativity? if you dont like the game that’s fine, but dont come trying to change other people’s opinions.

      • Dagobert

Come on man, there’s new innovative ideas like uhh… Costumes.  Obviously changing your characters costumes will make the game awesome.

Meanwhile i be enjoying another wonderfull game

  • MrKappa

All the comments here are repeats of what happened when FFXIII-2 came out. Seriously, it’s like I have gone back in time. This leads me to believe this new game will do just as well as FFXIII-2.

    • Repede91

The only hope I think this game has is if it can receive less cynamcism from the press and have that spread to regular gamers.

I thought XIII-2 was considerable improvement from the first; but many people I know had already written it off as bad without giving it a chance.

    • Yumii 123

“Do just as well as FFXIII-2”? You mean get a rating of 2/10 from every review and being the worst title in the series yet?

      • Aqua King

        Game Informer – 8/10
        Gamespot – 7.5/10
        IGN – 8/10
        Game Rankings -79/100
        Metacritic – 79/100

not sure where you got 2/10 from.

      •  Whoa.

I think the only reply I can actually post to this is…”lolwat”.

But for the sake of discussion and reasoning, I’ll only say this…which reviews are you actually talking about? User reviews or internet game sites/video game magazines reviews? Coz if you’re talking about the latter, I am really not sure where you got that from.

    • Leo Garcia

if u think 2mil WW sales for ff standards is well then i feel sorry for ya

      • MrKappa

My comment can easily be taken in a positive light or a negative one, it was all in how you thought about it. :/

    • l777l

“All the comments here are repeats of what happened when FFXIII-2 came out. Seriously, it’s like I have gone back in time.”

Yes, that’s because with XIII-3 the clock not only goes forwards but can also go backwards, depending on global events.

    • badmoogle

I think it will do a bit worse than that.
Not that i care if it sells 10 million or 10 copies anyway…

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

I really like the time progression idea (though this isn’t new by video game standards) for the new game. Especially the idea of, if you’re not careful with your time management and overstay your welcome in certain areas, then you may not be able to leave until night has passed and the new day rolls in.

But like I said before, I’ll remain skeptical of this until more information is posted, like that gameplay trailer they only showed to the audience members at the event… Lucky pricks… =/

BTW, why call it ‘Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII’? That just sounds tacky as hell. Just stick with the usual format and call it FFXIII-3. That’s what it is, so don’t try to beat around the bush and try to say otherwise. Using that word logic, if we go back in time, FFXIII would be called ‘Misfits’ Destiny: Final Fantasy XIII’ and FFXIII-2 would be ‘Serah’s Journey: Final Fantasy XIII’…

    • D H

I think it’s mainly due to the fact that, from what I’ve read, this isn’t going to play like the previous two games, so it doesn’t really warrant the -3 title.  Kind of like how Dirge of Cerberus could have been called Final Fantasy VII-2, but since it was a completely different style, they chose something different.

However, this is completely thrown out the window when considering X-2, which didn’t play anything like X… but since it was the exact same locations just a few years later, it still makes more sense.

So, yeah.  This is apparently a completely new environment, with (possibly) a new gameplay style (again, from what I’ve read).  Therefore, I personally don’t technically agree with calling it XIII-3.  But, on the other side, I really hope they change the title a bit… Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII just sounds a little… awkward.

  • Nickie

Is it 100% that the 13 series will only be a trilogy? Was hoping there would be more with Lightening. T^T

    • l777l

“Is it 100% that the 13 series will only be a trilogy? Was hoping there would be more with Lightening. T^T”

Well, they’ll probably rename the company Square-Lightning.

  • Why must the fandom be so polarizing? Either it’s a Day One purchase or you want nothing to do with it, and each side can’t help but point out how ridiculously self-entitled the other is.

I know I shouldn’t be surprised, but I’m getting physically sick reading all of the comments, because you always have to read all of the comments.

    • Herok♞

I think this is a result of many things, and middle ground can’t really be shown since it will be miss interrupted depending on the way its phrased.

      • Dagobert

        You’re welcome.

    • Hinataharem

      You seem upset friend.

    •  It’s the internet, what did you expect? lol the internet is not synonymous with common sense or reason :P

  • Niermyico

So what I’ve gathered is that in terms of time this is Majora’s Mask on steroids. Gotcha.

  • Go2hell66

just as long as this isn’t some shameless DLC money trap like ffxiii-2…

then i am okay with this

    • Godmars

Wait – You were being serious, weren’t you?

      • Go2hell66

very much so, what was there something funny about what i said?

        • Godmars

Let me just say that if DLC for the game were a speeding MAC truck, you wouldn’t see it coming.

        • That you thought it was a shameless money trap, you even specified FFXIII-2. Well I’m happy, I got all the DLC and I had fun with it. It wasn’t shameless at all, nearly all developer does this. This is something people who has the current generation consoles has to go through so why complain? obviously there are personal issue involved. Why don’t you direct your complaint to someone like…I don’t know Namco Bandai for their tons of costumes for tales of games that probably cost as much as a FXIII-2 scenario…Oh right you don’t want to because you and the majority of people here is willing to buy. You are just nitpicking.

[edit – you are free to state your opinion but please don’t get repetitive whenever it comes to FFXIII games]

          • Godmars

Characters from prior entries in the series. Outfits from whole other game series. DLC which outright changed the ending. People complaining about it are complaining that they didn’t get their initial money’s worth when they first bought the game. Those people would consider the last, not getting a complete story, especially shameless.

Likewise, not everyone is as happy with DLC as a whole. Its been one of the major arguments of this gen actually.

          • Aqua King

I personally like DLC that adds mainly cosmetic features (costumes, etc) Adding story elements to DLC (and quite poorly I might add) was a bad move for SE. (or a good move, since they did sell) I really hope future FF titles don’t shift towards this trend of DLC, since ‘incomplete’ games shouldn’t sell for $60 and have $20+ worth of DLC just to get the entire story out of it. It is shameless.

          • It’s a major issue to the niche community. I hardly see anyone complain about DLC when it comes to western games. Ok there were times when they complained but those are valid, day one DLC is a big nono (dragon age 2 and  whatever other games are out there). When it comes to  FFXIII-2, if they add a optional…I say OPTIONAL DLC, they start complaining as if they are entitled to something that isn’t finish to be in the game disc. It’s ok for them to say that for day one DLC like the weapon DLC but with future DLC? no I don’t think so. The lightning DLC didn’t really change the ending, it was only there to see what happen to lightning after and during the time of the actual ending. You don’t really need to play it but it would be cool to experience it…if you know what I mean.

          • @facebook-100000845943368:disqus  You say that as if Square Enix is the only one doing it. I do hope you know there are other games with story DLC like mass effect 2 and 3 or any other games. For the last TIME, FFXIII-2 isn’t incomplete. That’s like saying Mass Effect 3 is incomplete because they recently release a new story DLC 3 days ago. Tell me, what you think a incomplete game is?

          • Godmars

@kaishou:disqus : How do you read, if you read, “Likewise, not everyone is as happy with DLC as a whole.” and think it only applies to one game?

And FF13-2 became an incomplete game the day Square announced that DLC expanded upon the game’s ending. Just like the day-one Prothean DLC made ME3 less defined whereas Leviathan is what it is: a tacked on adventure which adds nothing.

Also: horse armor? No one complained about Elder Scrolls horse armor?

          • Dagobert

So you were totally fine paying the full retail price (assuming you did from your post) for a game that was sold as a full title, and then you had to buy the “chapters” in order to actually finish the game.  I’m fine with DLC’s adding shitty costumes and whatnot because I can skip them.  However if the DLC is adding storyline chapters, then no thanks.  That is a shameless money trap.  It’s like buying a car from a dealer and then you have to buy the damn tires, the steering wheel, the engine, the seats etc.

I would be fine with it, if the game was given out free and I had to pay for each chapter.  Like one of those free to play games where they make money off of micro transactions.  However this was not the case with the shitty sequel to a shitty prequel.

          • I’m totally fine with it, it’s a game for me to play. It’s something to pass time. You don’t need the DLC to finish the game as I did but if you want to download the “optional” DLC, fine go on ahead and buy it. It’s only 400 msp which isn’t much.

Your example is sort of bad (imo anyway). When you’re buying a car you have to check that everything is in working order and everything is there. Usually you don’t have to do that when you are buying a new car but maybe if you are buying a used car. I don’t know, it works like that with pretty much every form of electronic. You’re not being forced to buy the DLC as they are “optional” but with a car, if a used car is missing the wheels then I guess you are being forced to buy a new one else you can’t use it. I can play the game without the use of DLC. Maybe I’m not getting what you’re trying to say. Maybe.

For the last sentence, I would refrain from swearing or harshly expression how much you hate the game, again in a form of insult. We know you hate the game big deal and you have more to add but please be more civilize when you’re replying to someone, explain why you hate it or whatever. Swearing doesn’t help how you feel any better. Sorry, I’m pretty tired and I can’t be bothered to check if there are any spelling or grammar mistakes. I don’t think I’m going to argue with people who hate FFXIII because nearly all of them can’t give me a valid reason and only just insult the game as if it helps me understand why.

  • ……… =)

  • Hinataharem

“Lightning Returns” sounds like a movie title

    • OatMatadoQuatro

Sounds like a Superman or Batman movie to me.

  • Ooh Bee

So how’s the gameplay? Same as the other XIII games or what? Trying to avoid watching vids.

    • Foofin Around

Well from what we (think) we know so far, FF13 L.R. will be more of an action game with gameplay in line with something like KH or Type-0.  Lot’s of customization, different buttons for set abilities, etc.

Also, unless you’re trying to avoid a big spoiler about the ending of 13-2, the videos are wonderful.  The speakers did a very nice job with the presentation. (^_^)

      • Indeed, they pratically sold me over on the concept. I wouldn’t say they were good speaks, aside from Toryama which seemed more confortable with the crowd, they were all kinda shy. But they did a great job at explaining the works and showing us this game’s major, underlying concepts.

  • I’m a little worried for this to be too different from Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2 to be enjoyable for me, but honestly, I haven’t seen nothing yet.

I’ll just wait it out. However, something inside me would have rather seen the simple and expected “Final Fantasy XIII-3.”

I trust Square Enix, though. I’m sure they can make this work! Besides, Lightning is an awesome character!

  • Unlimax

wow , who would have thought -__-”

  • Leo Garcia

ye another trash game from the worst ff in the video game industry to date along ff10-2

fck u square….now ppl gonna have to wait at least a year and a half for versus since we all know that u gonna go full production with this trash lighting

    • junjoontea

      Way to be positive. :

    • dotzeno

      yeah, was about to say.
i wish they stopped focusing on lightning and focused on noctis for once.
the last time there was solid news about versus was when xiii came out and
now we have two sequels for xiii and still no new news for versus.

my initial response is still to expect that versus will be great, especially since they’ve kept this game in ‘development’ for so long. but i’ll probably be let down now and perhaps it’s just collecting dust somewhere (in favor of a cash cow).

      simply unacceptable square.

    • Zanetsu

I for one really liked X-2 and enjoyed XIII.

  • Leo Garcia

its funny tho the guy from square that announced this in seattle got owned by all the journalist that was there…they all made fun of him and laughing hard when he said…” the long anticipated ff game with the most iconic character that represent square enix” the ppl didnt let him finish lol they all start laughing hard.
good to know that guy got served.

now lets get over with this piece of trash so the true ff of this gen made by nomura can finally be released

    • Dagobert

Is there a video to that where the journalists laugh or something?

      •  I’m gonna go ahead and guess that’s just an internet exageration. I mean, I wouldn’t want to believe the gaming journalists attending were that rude and unethical.

I mean, they can actually have their own opinions sure, they’re human beings, but as journalists/reporters, they shouldn’t really trash on the work of others like that. The SE rep was just doing his/her job anyway.

So yeah, I’d honestly like to believe that’s just untrue, or else I wouldn’t really know what to make of the gaming journalists attending the show.

  • Monsley

Uhm. I don’t know about this one.
I loved FFXIII, but I didn’t enjoy XIII-2 as much as I wished for the very same reason I’m not completely sold on this one: the game felt almost completely unrelated to the original.
I also wish they kept the turn-based system from the previous games since I’m not too big on action RPGs, but I can live with that. I’m much more concerned about the story, honestly.

That said, I still have faith in this franchise and I hope “Lightning Returns” (couldn’t they have come up with a better title?) will turn out to be great! (If not as a sequel, at least as some kind of stand-alone game.)

    • Claire Oga

I’m in the same position. I love FFXIII, but XIII-2 was absolutely crap. The story was lame. Paradox? Really… Is this the best SE can do. I need an actual FF story. It like SE absolutely disregarded FF13 -Episode i-. Making Serah the main character was utterly stupid and she was too generic. But as a FF fan, I putting my trust and faith in this sequel “Lightning Returns.”

  • Christ

I wished they told us a bit about the story too. I do like the concepts though, I’m curious how much depth will it bring to the game, and more important, if there will be that balance that you see in the overall gameplay in FF games

  • Why didn’t they show any trailers? Don’t just talk, show us the ACTUAL game!

    • Dagobert

Was the awesome poetry reading and props not enough for you?

  • Cephrien

It seriously couldn’t just be called “XIII-3”..?

  • Dagobert

What’s with the props?  Why does this seem like a poetry reading and not a presentation? Also why more FFXIII crap? The first one sucked, a lot of people hated it. Then they released XIII-2 like the first one wasn’t enough to give us prostate cancer. And now this? They can take those red roses, the globe, the clock and all their useless poetry reading props and shove it.

Lighting is a horrible character. Just horrible. If you compare her to other main character of the past FF games, she’s just so useless and lifeless. Hell Tidus had more character even if he was annoying. I mean sure she might be the only interesting character in FFXIII but that’s because the other characters were so annoying. Hell, instead of making this crap, go remake FFVIII or FFX (port doesn’t count). Or how about actually starting on FF Versus XIII instead. I don’t want another DS Kingdom Hearts game either.

Gotta love the new innovative idea of how you can dress your character up… Yay…

FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP!!!!!1!!!ONE!!1!!!!ELEVEN!!!!! There’s going to be facebook updates!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • If the Spoony One (who hates Tidus with a passion) ends up saying he likes Lightning if ever he reviews XIII, then everyone’s argument against her will be invalid since actual hate against Final Fantasy began with the Spoony One so everyone will obey him.

      • Freud_Hater

Lightning as a character is actually not that bad. She has flaws, but nothing terrible. A lot better than Tidus, anyway. The problem is with the XIII games themselves and several elements in them and the fact that Square keeps pushing Lightning games as if there were seriously fans on the street demanding more Lightning sequels. Good sales are not an indication of fan demand, FF games always sale well.

        • Aqua King

This. I don’t see anyone demanding ‘more Lightning games’ Maybe the Japanese audience is different, or maybe the developers have convinced themselves they Lighting is why the FFXIII games have sold so well (since the first two were clearly only about that one character)

      • Wait.
People actually still listen to that guy nowadays?

        •  Absolutely. I couldn’t care less about his personal life but I still enjoy his reviews.

      • Talbot

Sooo, where are the torrents of hate for FFX then? C’mon, we’ve seen how much Spoony hates it, surely he’s converted a lot of people by now.

    • …Angry much?

    • M’iau M’iaut

          But I was expressing my love to… I’m hoping it’s a her.

  • Dagobert

  • hadjimurad

i just watched all four, and was impressed with this more personal way of introducing the game instead of some CG intro video with a bunch of 1 second edits.  i especially enjoyed the individual pieces of artwork for the city; the buildings had a lot of character. everything was positive for me (except the mention of facebook), and i don’t really get all the hate…

  • Freud_Hater

What the hell is up with that title? Seriously, Lightning returns? What, was she gone somewhere? She seemed to be pretty present in the last two games… Man, yet another Square game I’ll skip. Just get Versus out there already =_=

    • thundergodCN

      Soon it’ll be
“Lightning Returns: With a vengeance” then
      “Lightning Returns: Payback” and
      “Lightning Returns: Final Retribution”

      • badmoogle

        They could also try:
        “Lightning Wars”
        “Lightning Strikes Back”
“The Return of Lightning”(a different game from “Lightning Returns”)

        • OatMatadoQuatro

          The Lightning Rises
          The Lightning Menace
          Lightning Forever
Lightning & Robin, wait! I take that back! that would be a horrible movie! XD

  • badmoogle

It’s times like these that i’m thankful i have a huge backlog to keep me entertained until games i’m actually interested and want to play (like XIV for PS3 and Versus) come out.

  • i really wanna see their profit from this new FF13 how low that can get….
copycat game will never be good , RPG + Open world = darksiders 2

death vs lightning , death:”what a waste of time u only dirty my scythe”

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Copycat game??? Lol You do understand that all game copy each other don’t they?

Hell even that Darksiders series takes a lot from Zelda or Ys there.^_^

  • M’iau M’iaut

Hey folks, as Ishaan has noted earlier, these threads are about the new Lightning game, NOT Versus. Please keep the comments on topic and let’s all work to share our concerns without a lot of one line, pure unsupported angry words.

  • enorka miho

I wonder though how does this world come to form? And coccoon? Also, will the old crew including Noel and Serah be back? Well, I hope Lightning does not fight alone…

Anyhow, I think the world is very intriguing though.. Seems like there are more places to explore… Hope they can release more details in the future…

    • Aqua King

They did say in the videos that players will only control Lightning. I’m also hoping some of the other characters will find a way to be in this game, but I am highly doubtful.

      • enorka miho

Really??? But they will be very lonely!!! Nooo!! o_O

  • Aoshi00

Hm.. this comes rather unexpected for me.. I liked the way they built and improved 13-2 upon 13.. but now they’re taking quite a drastically different direction again and it’s not even called 13-3..

Lightning is OK, but I would like to see the rest of the cast as well.  They all appeared in 13-2 even if they weren’t playable.. and Hope played a very integral part in altering the history of that world.  We would see Serah as well right after what she had gone thru right..

In terms of gameplay, I liked 13-2’s improved battle system, not sure how I feel about the KH-like action gameplay..  Of course I’m stilling going to get this game day 1.  Just hope the 3rd entry would wrap up the trilogy nicely, as I really liked 13-2 much more the 13, and I thought 13-3 would go beyond that.

Yeah, lots of props, what is it, the Watchmen :)? but the Cocoon Globe is nice :)

Not loving the “Lightning Returns” title either.. “I’ll be back”

    • Pesmerga00

I’m getting major Dirge of Cerberus vibes from this. Which isn’t necessarily a good thing. You know, far removed from the norm. I read that there are even stealth options.

I honestly don’t know what to make of this. It certainly wasn’t what I was expecting.

      • Aoshi00

Wonder if it would be something like Last Story (but you don’t seem to have a party).. oh well, guess we’ll see.. Just hope they wouldn’t forget what happened in 13 & 13-2, especially the ending of 13-2.. otherwise they would be more like a spin-off than 13-3. And I actually really like the turn-based system in 13-2, thought it was much more fun than 13.. the presentation as well.. really wonder what happens to Cocoon and Gran Pulse since then (sry I forgot Hope made a new one :), XXX years later is so vague…

I like the monorail idea though.. we got to ride trains in both 7 & 8.. in 13 we only saw it in cutscenes or got to read about it.. and as always Kamikokuryo’s artwork is amazing..

  • Allon Hertz

Wait wait wait, spoilers of 13-2 now…THERE WAS NO WORLD! Wasn’t everything turned into chaos and stuff by Caius? Not raging about the game itself here… But really, I could have swore that the world had come to an end in the last game.

    • The world did end, but a new world was created from the Chaos.

      • Allon Hertz

Oh. I… Find this to be rather weird/lame, but oh well. Maybe if they change the gameplay I may buy this game. I liked XIII and XIII-2…But you know. I think that it’s time for a major change.

      • Claire Oga

If the world really died, then does that mean that Noel, Hope and the others are dead?

    • I thought it was more the world died but cocoon survived. This game takes place on cocoon so to me at least it makes more sense that the world is gone but cocoon is still floating up in the sky/space.

  • margherita mastropaolo

i’ll buy this after versus thirteen is releasesd

  • OatMatadoQuatro

What’s with all these raging comments? I don’t think Lightning deserves much ranting. She was more of a anithero rather than a silent protagonist, but she grows up across FF13 (a bit late, but she grows up).

    • Don’t know about you but I’m getting pretty tired of Square trying to shove their princess down my throat. She isn’t even a likeable character. I like the games, but come on.

      • M’iau M’iaut

They do seem to pick out poster characters (Cloud, Squall, Tidus, Light) and ride them pretty hard. I almost think of them as Square’s movie stars. The trouble is, for everyone who goes to a particular movie because of who is in it, you will find folks who stay away for that very same reason.

Now only if both groups would simply accept the other’s existence.

        • EverEndingStory

I don’t think they do it that badly for Tidus. Nor for Squall. I think they do ride Cloud (and Sephiroth) about just as hard as they do Lightning, but they didn’t start doing it for Cloud and Sephiroth until later, once their large fanbase had already been established. If these characters are movie stars, it seems like for most of them, they become stars gradually and naturally. With Lightning, she’s like Justin Bieber, in that it seems that Square is trying to force her into stardom.

          •  Heh….  Ride the Lightning…

Anyhow, that is a good way to put it.

        • badmoogle

The difference is that all main characters since FFIV and up to X were loved by the vast majority of the fanbase or at the very least they weren’t annoying to them.
Also with the exception of Cloud,SE never tried to push them as some sort of legendary superstars.

Yet they are really trying to force lightning to be seen as the ultimate SE character when in truth she has more enemies in the fanbase than any other FF main character ever.
At least the low sales of XIII-2 should have made it obvious to them that people want them to move on.XIII-2 was already too much in the first place.

          • LightZero

If you consider 2.5+ million low for a cheap spin-off sequel. FFXIII-2 was also their most profitable game along side Deus Ex in their financial report. Sure it didn’t do as well as FFX-2 but it most certainly did better than Crisis Core, TAY, and DoC. Saying it has low sales especially when a lot of jrpgs could only dream of making that much is rather false.

          • badmoogle

It had low sales as a main FF direct sequel. XIII-2 should have shown to SE that the sales of XIII came because it was the first current gen FF and because it was multiplatform not because it was a great game or because people liked its characters.

And you don’t compare a main FF game with “a lot of JRPGs” because it’s not very fair you know.Different budgets, different brand recognition, different goals. You compare it with other main FF games or at least direct sequels like X-2.
And i’m sorry but the comparison should be quite embarrassing for Toriyama’s team.

          • M’iau M’iaut

That’s an awful large generalization to make. Squall certainly had many detractors in his day as did Tidus. I will agree they do seem to be jonesing for Lighting a bit more direct. It’s just not some brand new behavior exclusive to this particular character, however.

          • badmoogle

Like i said Cloud is the only exception of a character that i can think SE has pushed as much as Lightning in the past. The difference here though is that Cloud comes from a game that was critically acclaimed and revered by millions while Lightning comes from a game that has dichotomized the fanbase more than any other FF (even ΧΙΙ) in the past.

The characters that you mentioned definitely had their own share of haters but not nearly as much as Lightning has.Just look at the biggest gaming forums on the internet (like NeoGAF for example) and you will see an unpreceded hatred for a FF character (and most of the other FFXIII characters as well).

          • M’iau M’iaut

You are speaking very much through modern glasses. I would argue there is as great a division between the pre and post FFVII world as there is between pre and post XIII. Not just today on NeoGAF or wherever the loudest screams commence, but from a 25 year historical context.

We can’t single out the ‘hate’ of Lightning as anything new and unique. But we can ask that at Siliconera we try and move on to other topics once a clearly passionate belief has been shared.

        • That was the best explanation I have heard for how they use their characters! And technically Cloud is now a movie star considering he did get his own movie :3

  • He’s bring me roses, telling me beautiful poetry, giving me a huge watch… Even showing my possible vacation spots. Square Enix are you trying to ask me out on a date!? (✿❛◡❛)
I’m really holding back the enthusiasm. I thought up til I really played the game that 13-2 would be more than just a Lightening cameo. I mean they put her on the cover and all you got was her narrative of her sister’s journey and cameo shots. I’ll probably play this eventually (I can’t resist *sigh*) But that will be after I’ve payed all the other games on my PS3 list. Also hope that facebook part isn’t mandatory or you’re missing out if you don’t use it (I don’t use facebook >_<)

    • Rishtopher

Well they said they’d update the main website so hopefully you won’t miss anything.

  • i guess that i am not the only one who is looking for Versus XIII whenever there’s a news about FFXIII even though lightning has the spotlight. :))

  • Yu_TheKing

They shoulda named it “Final Fantasy: Lightning Strikes Thrice”

Anyways, I enjoyed both XIII and its sequel so I won’t mind seeing Light one more time. Awaiting gameplay now…

  • I am not exci-

*Hears about the limited time element*

I am VERY excited for this!

    • badmoogle

Even if this was a game i was actually interested in,this element would have pretty much killed it for me.

It really contradicts the exploration aspect of a more open world. :/

      • Aqua King

I agree with this. I hate being timed on anything except specific missions or battles. I will hate starting over if you ‘fail to save the world in time’ repeating things does not equal fun.

        • Have you guys had the chance to play Majora’s Mask? If pulled right, you can still have an open world waiting for you to explore, as demonstrated by that game. It just depends on how well everything’s planned and executed.

    • I am not exci-
*Hears about the appearance customization element*
I am VERY excited for this!

  • theoriginaled

social media integration? are you fucking kidding me? thats not new its stupid.
I do like the doomsday clock idea, seems like a kind of majoras mask meets breath of fire dragon quarter meets valkyrie profile thing where the end slowly marches towards you but lightnings actions can speed it up like in BOF:DQ but I mean people have been doing this kind of dynamic game population scheduling in games for years now I wish square wasnt trying to pass it off as if its something revolutionary and new.

  • KyoyaHibari

SE come on…one sequel to XIII was enough; geez. We don’t NEED 3 main XIII games, not to mention one focused SOLELY on Lightning. SE’s devotion to Lightning is like the equivalent of Atlus milking Persona 3 & 4’s story: it’s unnecessary, poorly considered and doesn’t cater to the fans. Why don’t we have an FF game focused on Tidus since he was easily one of the better FF protagonists despite his game being one of the weaker titles gameplay-wise; or here’s a thought: FOCUS ON XIV & VERSUS XIII!

    • Anon-non

FF14, V13 and 13 are led by different programming teams. Lightning appeals to a lot, which is why I think SE keeps featuring her. Personally I like Tidus, but I know a bunch that can’t stand his energy.

      • KyoyaHibari

Ah I see, but how does their budgeting work? Wouldn’t it be difficult to pool in the money to work on so many new potentially high quality games with Lightning Returns, XIV, Versus XIII, KH, etc? On a side note, I’m baffled that people can tolerate Lightning, she’s the accumulation of what was wrong with past FF protagonists but with a dash of elitist feminist thrown in. It’s just aggravating…

        • Aqua King

Tidus was very uninteresting to me. Not as bad as Vaan though. I would have loved to see a spinoff sequel to Ashe’s story, or another Yuna/Rikku game… but that is just me :P I do agree that Lightning was a bit aggravating, ‘tough and cold’ does not mean you have created an epic character.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, with all the resources can be take from FF13 previous series, the budget will be much smaller there. Not to mention, the music can be recycled and remixes a bit to use them for this game, so it should not cause as much fund as FF 14 realm reborn or FF Versus 13.

Well, i thought Lightning had quite a nice personality there or it is maybe only me lol.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

……if you don’t know here, i will said that FF 13-3 here is surely something that everyone knows is going to come here considering the ending of FF 13-2 here.

And about Tidus there, i will strongly said that i don’t like him as protagonist at all just like how i don’t like Vahn here. Their personality is probably those that does not click on me at all.T_T

Anyway, they are already focusing a lot o FF 14 there with Realm reborn.

    • Isn’t FFX focused on Tidus? He does narrate 80% of the game and does an heroic sacrifice afterall.

I don’t think the gameplay was that much weak in comparison with others.

  • Zeromus321

I can understand a-lot of the rage about this announcement. Me personally, I just hate the whole Final Fantasy 13 story-arc and it’s characters. But what I hate most is how Lightning has become the new mascot for Final Fantasy. I MISS THE MOOGLE!!!

That being said I can understand why some people like it, everyone has the right to their own opinion.

  • Anon-non

I don’t care if they keep making XIII games as long as they’re fun to play. Make 20 more games, if the battle systems are fun and evolving, I’m in.

  • Sammy Garner

I’m just tryin 2 understand this FOOLISHNESS! Y is that SE is FORCING us 2 love this chick?! It seems 2 me that since there was such a rave about CLOUD n how the ENTIRE GALAXY wanted a FF7 remake n by SE shuttin us down about it, That they r force-feedin US, ya kno? Not only that, SE, with each installment in this series, has been pickin off a character slot. FF13 had 3, FF13-2 had 2 n a Pokemon, n NOW it a single character?! REALLY, SE?! This concept is like ZACKs adventure. smh. They need to LISTEN to the DIE-HARD FANS, like how ATLUS does, imo. Love SE but this “twist” on FF is outta order n i dont think THIS is wut a MAJORITY OF THE FANS WANT rite now/ at all.

    Give feedback if ya’ll agree/disagree

    • You dont know what the game is going to be like so stop complaining.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, Persona series does get stuck there on Persona 4 and come out with anime, cardgame, fighting game, puzzle game spin off and even spin off novel lol and yet no one complained there lol.

And, if you don’t like the game there, you can just choose not to buy the game there lol. As all gamer who played FF 13-2 should already know that this is going to come with the “To be Continued” Ending. IF they don’t at least finished the saga here, i believe worst response is going to come here lol.

And also about FF7 remake there, if you ask me, i am not really sure that i even would love to play them here lol as there are chances that SE screwed them here.

    • CptPokerface

It may be hard to believe, but there are as many people who enjoy the XIII series of games that don’t. Just listening to the people who don’t like the series and discontinuing whatever plans they have for it isn’t fair to the ones who are looking forward to something like this.

      • Sammy Garner

I’m not trynna bash the seriers n how people feel. i’m just sayin that SE AS A COMPANY shud take into CONSIDERATION of the DIVOTION the fans give them. I like the FF13 n FF13-2 in its own right but I think they layin on a character who AINT HOTT n who WE(the fans) want. LIGHTING WAS FORCED!!!! HER N THE CREW! Not to mention, she is the ONLY MEMBER who may have a position in this NEW game.  Now I  been followin FF SERIES 4 a min, n I like the make-up of them BUT IF THE PEOPLE are TELLIN u on a SILVER PLATTER wut they are willin to buy, Y ARENT U AT LEAST DOING THAT?!
THAT IS MUNNY IN THE BANK, then u can carry on wit the other stuff, am I wrong?

        • CptPokerface

That’s mostly a subjective argument. Essentially, every main character that has been introduced into FF has been “forced” upon the player. It was SE who decided that Cloud, Tifa, Barret, etc, would be the main characters. The players didn’t decide who would be the main cast of FF7. It just so happened that a great majority of the fanbase grew to love Cloud and the others, because many people could connect to them and it’s story.

They are still listening to fans, just different members of the fanbase, namely those who enjoy the FFXIII games and would like to see it develop. What I’m saying is, they can’t JUST listen to the vocal group constantly demanding KH3/FF7 remake/VersusXIII. They have to satisfy as many of their fans as possible.

And wouldn’t you want them to officially end the XIII series of games so you are more assured that the games that the majority really wants will be as great as possible?

Basically, just give it time. If VersusXIII will be as amazing as they have made it appear, then the FF7 remake couldn’t be far behind, then most everyone will finally be satisfied by something.

    • “Not only that, SE, with each installment in this series, has been pickin
      off a character slot. FF13 had 3, FF13-2 had 2 n a Pokemon, n NOW it a single character?!”

Hahaha! That made me laugh more than I should! xD

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

I read a write up on the the gameplay combat and it sounds very good. I know in the previous ones the AI put you in stupid positions sometimes to the point where the whole team got attacked when it could have been avoided. from what I read there’s actions you can designate to buttons. the one mentioned in the write up was evading attacks. which imo is great. it seems like they’re blending in elements from action rpgs into the rpg style that XIII. also you can change equipment during battle, to me that definitely seems like a feature they’re borrowing from Versus XIII since from the interviews i’ve read on that game changing weapon on the go was a key feature. so to see it in Lightning Returns will be great.

tbh I wasn’t amazed at the fact that lightning will have lots of costumes. I’d rather she had some official costume and the rest were unlockable as you progress (for all I know it could be like this) I guess when it comes to clothing I like them to wear their official stuff xD maybe i’m OCD on that kinda thing who knows.

for anyone interested in the write up about the exclusive demo that was shown then you can check it out here:–1564

from the sounds of it there will be quite a big change to how this will play out. I look forward to seeing more info (and hopefully a trailer) released at TGS :D

    • Nitraion

Hmm from the description i have vague vision for this game will be something like Tokitowa :Lightning edition XD but i dunno even though the game will be good but i am very blind about the story well i don’t really like XIII stories for starter……..

      • OathkeeperSoraXIII

I personally think the stories have such great potential, and the ideas behind them are very good. they are just told in an extremely hard to understand manner which really lets them down. I preferred XIII over XIII-2 mainly because paradoxes are just too complicated for my brain haha. I’m hoping Lightning Returns’ story will be easy to understand but very deep :)

  • Nitraion

Hmm i wonder FF Versus XIII is not really canceled…. ==”
they vague about versus XIII but fast about this game they even bring it on 2013
well i don’t have grudge against lightning even though i don’t like entire XIII game but it will be nice if they release versus first then this game….

    • OathkeeperSoraXIII

it’s because they had all the fundamentals of the development mechanics down after XIII, hence why XIII-2 could be released a year and a half after. same with this one. FF Versus XIII is being developed by a completely different. versus XIII will be a beastly game though once it’s released

  • karasuKumo

I like that they are relating this (even if it is just the art direction) to Versus and that Lightning is the main focus, it’s nice to hear them talk passionately about the project too. I’m really looking forward to this. I just want to know though, why isn’t the logo done in a traditional Final Fantasy way?

  • Valtiel Ikari

I wonder what SE is thinking? to me, seems like they are trying very hard to shove Lightining down our throut until we like her, is like they don’t even care that the enterity of FF13 isn’t really liked, and is by far the most lacking in story, exploration and character development departments, seriously.

SE, hope that this will conclude the godawful arc of Lighning and move on to better things, like creating likely and well developed characters, and giving us good exploration. Take Type 0 for an example, it is superior to 13 in every aspect, hell, is  probably the best FF you guys have done since the fusion of both companies, but you guys havent brought it over, instead, you force more of this Lightning arcs, give us versus already, seems much more promising than Lightning arcs, you guys should empower Noctis, since many are liking the things they heard about his character, Lightning already failed her purpose.

    • Bhunivelze

But then why do the games sell so well? *rolls eyes*

      • Valtiel Ikari

for the same reason that Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City sold well even thought it was average at best (and saying average is already giving it more credit that it actually has), because name sells. Pure and simple.

        • Bhunivelze

By this logic no games in ANY popular series are any good because you can excuse their sales by saying it was the name that sold them. You’re forgetting the fact that XIII-2 sold well too, despite continuing XIII.

excuse me, when did I said all games in popular franchise are no good? I just refered to this particular case, and give the example of RE:ORC, so I just refered to only two games. But hey, let me refrase my self.

SOME games use the name to sell, and even if the game isn’t as good as the previous one (like DMC2 for example) they sell more, but that doens’t mean that a game in a popular franchise can’t be good, some other ones use the name and prove to deserve it because they are as good or better than the previous ones (like DMC3). In THIS case refering to Final Fantasy 13, the delivering hasn’t been good, the gamaplay is good, yes, but the rest of the elements that made the franchise are lacking (character development, story, exploration, overall feel of a world thats alive), a lot. Part 2 improved lots of things, ok. but they are continuing to focus in this particular entry instead of giving us something new and improved. They just still try to sell us Lightinig as the ultimate main even thought that it already failed in the first game.
It’s just feel that they are trying too hard to redeem  this particular character. They could be doing FF15 and do things right, learning from mistakes, but they ratter use the feeback to redeem Lightning.

Will the new chapter sell? Yes, it will. Will it be good? maybe. Will it make Lightning a likable deep cool character SE want her to be? Maybe it will. But frankly, I (and others) rather see a new entry in the series instead of this continous attemp to make the fanbase love a character just because they want the fanbase to like her.

  • What bothers me the most– and I cannot stress this enough…

The people who didn’t like FFXIII and its spin-offs– still lurk around it’s forums and websites, talking about the game, are just there still bashing it.

I understand. You don’t like Lightning. You don’t like SE’s decisions. I understand and I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the games as much as I did.

But please, for the love of God, don’t come over and complain. Not only that, but I’ve seen/read people already hating on this game, a game that we haven’t even seen gameplay of. You couldn’t have expected SE to not end the FFXIII sub-series. You knew it was coming. I just really despise people trashing the games because they did not like it, almost stuffing it down people’s throats. You are entitled to your opinion, but I don’t think it’s necessary to go off on tangents about the problems you have with it, most times in a childish/rude manner.

It’s the same with ME3. Leviathan DLC came out and people are still mad about the ending.

All you have to do is ignore XIII until this game is over. Don’t buy products from SE. Maybe they will change their views on game development, if that’s what you want. But the time to complain is… over, at least I think so.

Yes,“The storm is here”. Just wait it out.

    • Godman

Totally agree, unfortunately these are the people who have nothing else of value in their lives other than this. That and hecklers suck

    • Luna Kazemaru

welcome to this generation of gamers.

      • Godman

I wouldn’t say that this is now’s generation, more or less these are stubborn nostalgiafags whose afraid of change. They need to learn to adapt or they’ll never be happy with the gaming universe

        • Luna Kazemaru

it is more or less this gen to lol because they love to bandwagon with hate.

    • Valkenhayn

I only posted here since the mobile version of siliconera won’t let me load more news entries or at least go full version to see the other articles. So I’ll just say I only praise FF13 for the music and visuals.

    • Chiupon

we live in an entitled era. What do children do when they don’t get what they want? They whine and complain because they’re helpless to change or do anything about what they don’t like. They’re still going to buy it whether they like it or not, they’re not going to stop buying SE’s games; it’s a fact. Gamers these days are overgrown manchildren with developmental issues.

  • Kuro Kairi

I like to think that they are still trying to redeem themselves for XIII, and give fans something they want and make XIII deserving of the FF name.

But that title! Its like something out of hollywood commando movies.

I don’t have much hope for the story but I have for the gameplay.

  • Rishtopher

I tried to watch this with an open mind but, the props, poetry and over abundance of sentimentalism made this seem really pretentious. Really, it’s just a game. I get that they’re trying new stuff with the world but, all they had to do was show us screenshots and gameplay footage.

I’m wondering if they’re gonna try this kinda thing when Versus finally makes a debut…

    • Daniel Morandi

I agree with you…man even games with no presentation like this at all are deeper than this saga.

  • Unlimax

Square confirmed that Final Fanatsy Versus WILL NOT BE AT TGS ……………

    HAPPY .. ಠ_ಠ

  • Daniel Morandi

They trying too hard the make Lightning appealing (or more appealing for fans) y’know I feel most games don’t try to make a huge presentation about the main character saying “he/she is this and was that….blablabla” that I actually loved main characters in games that they weren’t that special if not for their companions, npc and most importanly the antagonists. If they put to much concentration in “this is her story” i don’t think i like it, it shouldn’t be about her alone and even if it has a redundant plot going on I don’t wanna feel that the director put more concentration in ending “her legend” that everything else.

Aside from my dislike of FFXIII-2 were she was non-existent at all (except a DLC) it’s good that they are trying to make a correction in making her important but it has to exist a balance too.

  • So is this the apparent new XIII-3? o_o… where is my Versus… I didn’t get a PS3 for no entire reason… (well I got it for many… but Versus was one of them…)

  • $30632660

I like that they’re making more games about Lightning. The more Lightning canon the more “situations” of Lightning that I can find on the net.I say keep em coming SE.

  • ThunderGod_Cid

Hmmm, didn’t Capcom use a similar “Doomsday Clock” gameplay mechanic with Breath of Fire V:Dragon Quarter? I remember that mechanic sucking, among other things.

Anyway, the idea of having a time limit, especially one that is drastically affected by your actions, takes a lot away from the whole open-world/exploration thing they’re trying to go for.

“Two steps forward, Three steps back” eh Square-Enix?

    • $30632660

I guess you’ve never played Majora’s mask then.

    • Unlimax

       Go play Shadow hearts ~

  • We seem not to have a chance to play a real good FF game soon.

  • Lunar_Outcast

    Type-0 Localization when?

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

I wonder about that everyday but, while I don’t want to sound pessimistic, at this point I really doubt it’ll ever come~. =/

    • M’iau M’iaut

We have asked numerous times that folks keep to the topic of the thread. This is no more a Type-0 thread than one for Versus.

  • epy

I don’t mind Lightning. I think she’s ok, but I wonder why they’re pushing her so hard on us. It’s like they’re desperate or something. I don’t get it.

Game looks cool, but its definitely not priority for me. Will probably end up getting it once its 15 bucks like I did with XIII-2.

  • The wise one

This game is going to either be a complete success or a complete bust either way it’ll sell at least a million copies

  • Trey Donnelly

I love Lightning, I mean how many other  JRPGs have a female protagonist who isn’t scantily-clad beyond all belief or who doesn’t have a flirtatious just because of the fact that she’s hot. However, I do agree that they are shoving her down our throats.

What I don’t agree with, though I do understand, are people who says she has no development. Now, I’m not going to type that she is the most developed character in existence, because she’s not and we all know that, but I do think she has gone through some development as a character.

In the beginning of XIII she was a cold, ruthless, anti social b*tch, who had one goal: To save Serah. However, as the game progressed and she spent more time with Hope, she began to change her ways (probably because she viewed him as a sibling, like she did with Serah), this allowed her to be less cold, ruthless, and even self-sacrificing for a child she hardly knew (again Hope).

Though she did treat, Snow like her personal punching bag in the beginning, she did eventually apologize, which was hard for her because in her mind he deserved it, but at the same time he didn’t.

In her speech to Hope, which reveals the most about her character, she says that the L’cie curse had taken away her hopes and her dreams, which shows that the tough “fighter chick” had hopes for her future and wasn’t as angry and rude as she presented herself. She also notes, that she had to become “Lightning” for Serah, and the way she words that phrase makes it seem as though Lightning isn’t just another name for her it’s another identity that she uses to protect both Serah and even herself.

In XIII-2, she has basically no development at all, because she doesn’t appear that much. However, her speech to Noel and Serah, about the reason why she accepted the role as Etro’s Knight, shows that it isn’t something that was just bestowed on her. Lightning chose the role, because she wanted to repent for her past sins: Shutting her sister out which in turn changed the lives of many people.

So, in a way it does seem weird to make the game focus on a character who didn’t get much development in XIII (because that game gave everyone an equal amount of focus) or XIII-2 (because she was reduced to the role of narrator, while her sister was the protagonist), but it does give Square a chance to give Lightning more character development and to have the character evolve in the game.

The game itself sounds great to me right now, so hopefully once this saga is finished they can move onto to other projects and let Lightning rest in peace.

  • Hmmm….the idea of yet another FF XIII game at first made me go “do not want”, but after sitting through these videos, I think my opinion did change, a little bit.

I enjoyed FF XIII and it’s sequel, to some extent. The games had serious flaws (the first in game design, and the second in the storytelling), but were enjoyable as a whole. That should be enough for me to be wanting yet some more FF XIII, but that’s not the case.

The Final Fantasy series has been my favorite since, well, ever. Okay or at the very least since I first played a FF game, a loooooong time ago. And what I loved most about the series was the hybrid continuity to it that made it so unique. I think Kitase said it best in his video. Every game represented a new take on the tale of the crystals, a new group of characters, stories, worlds…and that’s what made the series stay so fresh. You’d find familiar and conforting elements blended in perfectly with new stories, situations, worlds and characters at every corner.

And now there’s Final Fantasy XIII. And now we have three games based off the same mythos and world (well, one could argue this takes place on a new world, but it’s basically the same mythos and the same character making an appearance). Why turn FF XIII into a series of it’s own..? At this point, SE could be using all these assets into making a new IP.

Their ideas are really nice. The whole Majora’s mask thing to it, if well executed, can give the player a feeling of control over the world events, that can definitely feel fresh and amazing.

And now, I reaaaaaally hope this game gives FF XIII some closure. It’s about time SE moves on to better, new things. It’s hard for me to talk about this without being singled out by fans of the game as a “hater”, but that’s not the case. I have nothing against the FF XIII story arc, but I just feel that by now, they’re stretching it, to a point where the narrative makes little to no sense. I thought FF XIII-2 was fun, but I also believe it was heavily shoehorn into FF XIII. I mean (FF XIII SPOILERS), everything ended well in FF XIII. Everyone was happy. At least now they let everyone know there would be more to FF XIII (with FF XIII-2’s ending).

And now I’ll stop talking coz no one will read this wall of text anyway :3

    • Foofin Around

Well, I read it all.  And honestly, points to you.  You voiced your opinion in a decent, well-articulated manner.  I can also agree with quite a few of your points, and that’s coming from someone who loves the FF13 games.  (^_^)

      •  Well knowing someone read it makes it worth already eheh. It’s hard for me sometimes to talk about the FF XIII story arc, because it’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just that I think it’s being somewhat pushed upon something that was already established to be a self contained game (the original FF XIII), and it feels as if the more games they make, the harder it is for the story to stay coherent and interesting.

And yet since this game is so polarizing, you get people quickly assuming I’m trashing the game (I am not), because it seems you can’t have an opinion that sits confortably between both sides of the fence :P Someone who enjoys the games for what they are, and doesn’t think they’re the second and third coming of Christ nor the most horrible games to ever be published ;)

        • Foofin Around

Oh, it definitely was self-contained in the first one.  At least, for the most part.  With just about anything made, there are always questions left at the end (mythology, how things came to be, after effects, etc.).  But that’s where suspension of disbelief comes in, so you go with it.

While it was a little all over everywhere at times, I’ve enjoyed and understood the plot of both games.  And anyone that pays attention to some of my posts knows that I love the cast.  That’s my opinion, so I’m sticking to it.

And yet, I can’t help but agree with you when you say it’s the most polarizing out of any FF to date. … Or at least, the haters of the game have been more vocal than with other games.  But details, so whatever.

Regardless, you know where I stand, and I know where you stand.  And you know what?  This has been a civilized discussion.  I love the games, but I’m fine with you being in that grey area.  It’s understandable.  So honestly, thank you.  It’s refreshing to see that there are actually quite a few people in this thread that are open-minded about other opinions. (^_^)

          •  Ahah! Nah, thank you! It’s conforting to know that at least someone understands exactly where I sit, instead of pointing fingers and trying to push me into one of the categories (the haters or the lovers, lol).

Hopefully the game will be kick ass and the vast majority will be able to enjoy it (and SE will then move to other projects, by giving this story arc it’s definite conclusion and answering as many questions as possible!) :D

    • imaguni

As someone who liked XIII/XIII-2 Until the ending anyway, I agree with you as well and I appreciated your fair assessment of the situation. Mentioning weaker points/aspects does not make you a hater and it’s a shame that people follow this way of thought so often.

I’m definitely concerned about the execution of LR:XIII, since XIII-2 and XIII each possess what the other game lack. In some ways, I feel that XIII-2 had even bigger strengths and even bigger weaknesses than its predecessor: much improved gameplay, but an even weaker storyline. I don’t want to see an even bigger gap in strengths and weaknesses, and I think that resolving issues within the series goes beyond just bringing back Lightning as much as possible. We’ll have to see. :x

      • topdog2007

now i agree i like ffXIII and ffXIII-2 but i want more expiration shops quest i can pick up and go and quite if i want to pick up again weapons change costumes change some thing new and exiting same with ffXIII feeling in it witch i liked a lot and stilll having problems beating DX

        • imaguni

The good news is that it seems that they’re pushing for even more exploration in LR:XIII. Let’s hope that ends up being the case for sure. Getting weapons in XIII definitely was a huge pain, I agree. Money was such a must and we had so little… I ended up having to take advantage of the few spots where enemies come back a lot!

          • topdog2007

yeah all i ask for different costumes and different weapons and quest that be great as well

      •  Well….they COULD take this chance to actually make things right and work on the flaws of the first and second games. What worries me is if this trend somehow continues, and SE turns FF XIII into a yearly tradition, pushing FF XIII games over and over until they believe they got it right.

Well, they did the same thing with FF VII to an extent, and eventually they stopped, so I hope they get it right now and simply move on when they’re done with this one.

And thanks for understanding :) Kudos on the avatar, Nocturne is one helluva game :D

        • imaguni

I want to hope that’s the case and I think it’s possible. I mean, their goal with XIII-2 was to address the gameplay feedback from the first game and I personally think they were successful in that aspect! I don’t mean to write them off completely, I’m just more… cautious, I guess.

To be fair, the difference between VII and XIII is that most of the VII additions were released as part of the Compilation of FFVII at least ten years after the original game’s release. But it goes back to what you were saying earlier, there at least was some breathing space (and other games) in between these releases.

And thank you! :D It’s one of my favorites!

          •  I actually booted up the game again. It’s still as awesome as it ever was (Nocturne that is) :P Sorry for the off topic, but I just love that game to death :x

And well, since we are getting the game, no matter what, let’s just hope for the best. Breathing space is indeed something I praise and find important when you’re releasing games based off the same mythos or at the very least using the same character, but it all depends on the execution.

    • Dhana Pinder

well said I liked 13 and 13-2 but I agree with your assessment.

  • Sammy Garner

I’ve been readin n HONESLTY been thinkin’ n this is  H.A.M.( HOT ASS MESS)  I dont understand this. Wut is the PURPOSE 4 DLC if ur not puttin the final touches on sumthin, especially an RPG!
