Still doesn’t appeal to me that much, I like the idea of it but don’t like the fact that like many other MMOs your character is just stood in one stationary position whilst you press keys on a skill bar. Both the enemy creatures and your character should be dashing around dodging and blocking on the battlefield, otherwise what is the point in making open battlefields?

It’s funny to watch them dramatically run up to an enemy and then just stop, stand in front of them and start using skills.

    • SuperSailorV

You DO dodge and reposition yourself in this game to avoid enemy skills, among other things. The game is more interactive than you think, but I guess it’d take actually… I don’t know, playing the game to figure that out.

That aside, standing still and choosing commands are kind of the basis of RPGs. You don’t get to change your chess pieces around during a Chess match in realtime whenever you please, do you? MMO is MMO; it sounds more like you’d have more fun with a God Of War title.

      • Stuart Nisbet

Don’t have the energy to argue with you but I’ll just say TERA.

        • Luna Kazemaru

should have said blade and soul.

          • Stuart Nisbet

            That too…

        • Should have said Vindictus.

There is literally a trailer showing gameplay, characters standing in relativity the same place aside from combat animations as they exchange “blows” with monsters who are also otherwise stationary – what more is needed?

Such is a slight improvement over “traditional” turn-based gaming, but that’s rather the point – after all this time it should be so slight. So little changed from the 8 bit days.

When White Knight Chronicles was first shown the thing which got me most excited for it was seeing active blocking and parrying. It failed to deliver on that and many other things but games like Resonance of Fate and Valkyria Chronicles did try to actively incorporate position movement and environment into battle mechanics where Square’s efforts are merely for show.

Kind of insulting when you look at something like Ogre Battle or FFT.

And then there’s the new X-com game. Just looking/thinking about what that title promises to do with turn based combat – frankly makes my gamer panties moist.

yeah but you don’t need dodge in every game tho i mean take wow fore instance it got millions of players and it did not change at all it keep it regular system in it so i am going to try this game and  yes i am a loyal fan of final fantasy games so bite me

        • Draparde

while it’s not a super special actiony game like PSO2 and others, you do have to move around in FFXIV, or at least you should be.

certain attacks grant you combos if you attack from different sides(such as using a skill from the front, and then moving to the enemy’s side for the 2nd one ect) , and some monsters skills can be avoided by moving out of the way.
however, monsters don’t seem to share the same traits. that would be nice to see imo.

this trailer did fail to show that..but it’s probably because it seemed to focus on more flashy weaponskills and location rather than technical aspects.

          • topdog2007

well look this is not like tera and other games this is final fantasy XIV why fix some thing that not broken? i mean adding a dodge system makes it more actions than rpg i mean take again wow it took what it learned from other rpgs and stick with what it good at . but still i am going to buy this game and give it a shot if they do have a dodge system that be kind of cool but hey we all can’t be beggars. and monster use skill like the final fantasy games dide that be cool to fight a bahumt or that tentelce thing i forgot it name use bad breath i hated that DX

          • Draparde

I’m not saying to add a dodge system, i’m saying that the game already has something like that it’s fine that it’s not an action game.

the only thing i said i’d like to see is monsters moving around for their weapon skills similar to how we have to now.

i’ve actually already signed up for the alpha and play the current version too :x so needless to say i’m in that boat with you lol.

      •  I’ll point you to Phantasy Star Online 2 as well, while the others point you to TERA and Blade and Soul.

        • TouchSatori

          Guild Wars 2..

  • Enma_Kozato

    There’s my playable catboy (e w e)

  • badmoogle

Looks really, really nice.I wish this was an open world single player FF though.:/

Still i’ll probably try the PS3 version if i don’t have lots of games to play by then.

    • The director has stated that anyone who wishes to play solo on Realm Reborn will be able to do so. When groups are required for certain quests and battles, the has a system in place that will help solo players find temporary companions with similar interests.

Looks very promising to me as well. I will definitely give it a try on my PS3 as soon as it comes out.

  • imaguni

Wow… I have little to no experience with MMOs (never really interested me) but the more I see of this, the more it looks good, think I’ll take the plunge!

  • Zeromus321

While it’s nice to see them improving the game, I think I will just stick with Guild Wars 2.

  • Wiccan1109

I think it looks a darn sight better than it was 1 year ago today, thats for sure.

As far as combat goes though i feel XIV has trouble deciding on a direction. It wants you to move/dodge/position but is very awkward and clumsy to do it with. TERA got it right in this aspect, since combat movement is very quick, and theres a fair handful of position altering abilities that allow you to dodge, block and teleport in a very fluid way. XIV just has you running about weapon drawn, clumsily stomping about like a blind robot with a firecracker up its ar*e.

That said, it isnt without its charms and its far more fun to play than it is to watch in vids. It needs to sort itself out in a few areas, provide greater support/debuff effects. That /might/ draw the community away from its addiction to class stacking and raw dps > thought & strategy via combat abilities. Some of the jobs need a lot more work done to make them more fun or less tear inducing. If they get that sorted i reckon they’ve got themselves a very class game coming up indeed, blind robots be damned.

  • hunterrnl

Wow :D I wanna see this on my ps3 !

  • Bhunivelze

    Looks amazing. :O

  • Solomon_Kano

This is looking incredible. Definitely will give it a go once it hits PS3.

  • Abhishek Posooa

A new Final Fantasy XIII,really awesome!!!
    And then this trailer,f*cking badass!!!!!!!!!

    • M’iau M’iaut
Please note our posting rules and that this is a thread about XIV, not XIII. Also, in every Lightning post we have mentioned to keep comments on that title and not start requesting/discussing Versus. I hope we don’t need to do the same thing here.

      • Abhishek Posooa

        Oh God,I’m sorry…

  • This is truly a beautiful realm reborn =^_^=

Think of what would had happened if they would have taken a few extra years to make this; instead of going through all the trouble of making update after update. Im still dont know if I forgive square enix or not, but they’ve been doing alot better.
