Drakerider’s Battle System (Literally) Hands You The Reins To A Dragon

Drakerider, an iOS role-playing game that Square Enix revealed at E3, is scheduled for release today on iOS devices (watch the trailer here). The game is set in a world on the brink of destruction, and protagonist, Aran Lawson and his dragon companion, Eckhardt, have to save it from an enemy called “the Dread”.

Drakerider’s battle system puts you in control of Eckhardt’s reins. You can loosen and tighten your grip on his reins, which will have different effects. Easing off the reins lets Eckhardt attack. Giving him too much freedom, however, will endanger Aran himself, as Eckhardt’s natural instincts will take over and he’ll turn against his master. A gauge at the top of the screen lets you monitor tension level.

You can upgrade Eckhardt’s abilities, too. Winning battles will earn you CP, which can be used to learn new abilities and attacks. Square say that learning certain abilities will close off others, so you’ll have to plan your skill tree out.

Drakerider has five chapters to play through. Square Enix are making the first chapter available for free. Chapters 2-5 cost $6.99 each. You can also grab the entire game in a bundle for $20.99. Drakerider is developed by Witchcraft Inc.

Interesting but seriously what’s with these prices you could just donate to a kickstarter game

What does Kickstarter have to do with the price of this game?

         They’re both a rip off?

it looks like a good game, but what made me feel ripped is that the whole chapter is already included in the game ipa already =/ (i tried the jp version)

Think I’ll snag this if it ever gets into one of those bundles, or if they have some kind of special sale. What can I say- I am one hell of a sucker for games with dragons in them. Dragons man, all day every day for me. I just hope the dragons themselves aren’t JUST mindless beasts who turn on their masters, would be nice if they have lines and personalities of their own.

square enix pushing iOS with quality content its something that we should praise, but i really hope that they are more platform independant and more in the mobile area….

Cavia’s gone so the original developer would be out which would mean Squeenix would shuffle any new Draken or Nier games to someone else and I’m not sure I’d want whatever product they made then :(

Some time ago, we knew about this game’s name and concept and… well, I thought it would be some kind of Drakengard-esque game. I’m a little dissappointed, but well, I shouldn’t have expected anything anyway. I mean, I didn’t even like Drakengard 2…
