Update: Game Informer have confirmed with NPD that Darksiders II at #1 sold 247,000 copies in the month of August. Meanwhile, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron at #7 sold  105,000 copies.

Not one, but two Nintendo 3DS games among the top-ten best-selling games in August? Yep. New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance were #2 and #3 respectively on the NPD Group’s U.S. software sales chart for last month.

Meanwhile, the #1 position was taken by Darksiders II, which launched simultaneously on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Also on the list was Square Enix’s Sleeping Dogs, which came in at #6.

The top ten best-selling games in August were as follows:

Rank Title System Publisher
01. Darksiders II PS3, 360, PC THQ
02. New Super Mario Bros. 2 3DS Nintendo
03. Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance 3DS Square Enix
04. NCAA Football 13 PS3, 360 Electronic Arts
05. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes PS3, 360, 3DS, Wii, PC, PSV, DS Warner Bros.
06. Sleeping Dogs PS3, 360, PC Square Enix
07. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron PS3, 360 Activision Blizzard
08. Batman: Arkham City PS3, 360, PC Warner Bros.
09. Call of Duty: Black Ops PS3, 360, Wii, PC, DS Activision Blizzard
10. The Amazing Spider-Man PS3, 360, 3DS, Wii, DS Activision Blizzard

Software sales in August were down just 1% compared to August 2011, according to the NPD Group’s data.

NPD’s Anita Frazier chalks this up to a strong slate of titles as compared to the year prior. The reason that a decline happened at all is the result of a domino effect from previous months in 2012, where the selection of game releases has not been particularly strong, Frazier suggests.
