Kingdom Hearts 3D And Sleeping Dogs Were Among August’s Best-Sellers [Update]

By Ishaan . September 6, 2012 . 4:05pm

Update: Game Informer have confirmed with NPD that Darksiders II at #1 sold 247,000 copies in the month of August. Meanwhile, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron at #7 sold  105,000 copies.

Not one, but two Nintendo 3DS games among the top-ten best-selling games in August? Yep. New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance were #2 and #3 respectively on the NPD Group’s U.S. software sales chart for last month.

Meanwhile, the #1 position was taken by Darksiders II, which launched simultaneously on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Also on the list was Square Enix’s Sleeping Dogs, which came in at #6.

The top ten best-selling games in August were as follows:

Rank Title System Publisher
01. Darksiders II PS3, 360, PC THQ
02. New Super Mario Bros. 2 3DS Nintendo
03. Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance 3DS Square Enix
04. NCAA Football 13 PS3, 360 Electronic Arts
05. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes PS3, 360, 3DS, Wii, PC, PSV, DS Warner Bros.
06. Sleeping Dogs PS3, 360, PC Square Enix
07. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron PS3, 360 Activision Blizzard
08. Batman: Arkham City PS3, 360, PC Warner Bros.
09. Call of Duty: Black Ops PS3, 360, Wii, PC, DS Activision Blizzard
10. The Amazing Spider-Man PS3, 360, 3DS, Wii, DS Activision Blizzard

Software sales in August were down just 1% compared to August 2011, according to the NPD Group’s data.

NPD’s Anita Frazier chalks this up to a strong slate of titles as compared to the year prior. The reason that a decline happened at all is the result of a domino effect from previous months in 2012, where the selection of game releases has not been particularly strong, Frazier suggests.

It’s nice to see some 3DS games on the list, if I remember correctly most of the time 3DS games don’t break the top 10.

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

    Congrats, Kingdom Hearts! :D

Big win for Square Enix. Good to see them having some success again.

It’s great to see Darksiders II and Sleeping Dogs selling, as both games deserve it, and their success at least should be encouraging for publishers to try new IPs and series, and maybe to not be so quick about abandoning a project.

Also I’m sure Nintendo are chuffed with two 3DS exclusives ruling the roost, at least Mario’s still a great seller.

Darksiders only did 247k, though, so keep that in mind. KH3D and Mario will have strong legs and sell well this Christmas, but I don’t know about Darksiders and Sleeping Dogs.

      • KHSoraKeyBlade

Won’t Darksiders II be hitting the Wii U later this year? They will surely get some sales out of that, maybe not a lot but still something.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yeah, they likely will, but for a project of Darksiders II’s scale, I don’t know if that’s good enough. Sleeping Dogs is very concerning, too. Launching a new I.P. this late in the generation was always going to be a risk, and I commend Square for having the guts to do it.

As sad as it is, these numbers show it’s time for this generation to end and for the next generation to get started. In my opinion, that’s a bit of a pity, since it feels like it’s only in the past 2-3 or so years that developers have really gotten the hang of using this gen of consoles to create interesting games with manageable budgets.

Basically, this gen screwed everyone over with development costs, new technologies, and a very, very competitive market.

    I just got KH3DS I can’t put it down X_O

No doubt they fancy themselves masters already.

Great news! I’m glad to see KH DDD so high on that chart. Can’t put the game away, definitely one of the 3DS’s best.

Darksiders 2 in the #1 spot?

    You’re alright, gamers.

I wish sleeping dogs did abit better but congratz S-E

    • Aoshi00

Your avatar saying this crying :)?  Yeah, Sleeping Dogs is really good, even better than I expected, I can’t stop playing it.  Good voice acting too (other than Mrs Chu maybe lol)

  • imaguni

Way to go KH3D! Deserves a high position.

I enjoyed NSMB2 but I mostly enjoyed Kingdom Hearts 3D. As a fan of the series, this is the game that I really enjoyed the most since BBS. For 3DS games in general, this is also the best game I played since MK7 and Kid Icarus. It got me really hyped for Kingdom Hearts III. :)) Great to see the game getting a very high place in the charts.

What was that, Activision? I can’t hear you over your munching on your humble pie. Sleeping Dogs, or rather, True Crime: Hong Kong at the time, couldn’t compete with in the genre? Wouldn’t sell very well?

One of the best things Square-Enix ever did was salvaging this. Say what you want about the development side of them, but as a publisher, they are damn good. Not to mention the surprisingly good PC port of the game as well. Keep on rolling, Square. You’re actually doing good.

    • malek86

Looking at the chart, the game probably sold around 120k copies. Not exactly a smashing success, unless it can retain great legs. Fortunately, it seems to be doing better in the UK.

      • Talbot

Well, I don’t think anyone thought it would be an overwhelming success, but I’m happy enough with how it’s done so far. It’s a damn better sight than Activision’s original decision to can the game when it was virtually done because they feared it would never manage CoD-level numbers or something.

This isn’t much of a surprise especially since KH has a very strong following/fanbase Sleeping Dogs is a new IP there are very few new Ip’s that come out out the gate selling TONS of copies these days, and then they’re both under Square-enix so I don’t think it matters really lol.
