Ikaruga Designer’s Nintendo 3DS Shoot-em-up Out This Month; Here’s A Trailer

By Ishaan . September 10, 2012 . 10:00am

Ikaruga creator Hiroshi Iuchi’s next game is a Nintendo 3DS shoot-em-up, Kokuga, which is out later this month. Today, G.Rev released a new promo video for the game, which you can find below:

Kokuga uses cards in place of power-ups. You begin a stage with 20 cards to use, and four random cards are displayed on the bottom screen at any given point for you to tap and make use of. Cards can have different offensive and defensive effects.

Kokuga will be released on September 27th in Japan.

    Haha was just watching the latest trailer >w<;; Seriously, I have to admit, I was kind of overlooking Kokuga for awhile, arena shmups aren't really my thing. But after hearing Hiroshi Iuchi is directing it, should definitely keep an eye on it~ He's directed three of my favorite shmups, so here's hoping this gets localized uwu;;

  • didn’t know about the card stuff – sounds crazy -sign me up! gotta figure out how to play jp games on a us 3ds 1st

      AFAIK, 3DS is region-locked, so no dice. Unless someone knows how to get around that (I presume by modding/hacking the system), you won’t be playing JP games on a US 3DS anytime soon.

    Looks cool!

    Touhou rip-off, I’m calling it now.

    •   Bad joke?

    • neetyneety

      I recall a time when some of the more “passionate” Touhou fans would call any and every bullet hell game a derivative rip-off of Touhou.

      …. Those were not the best of times.

    The OST looks like it would fit more a RPG than a shmups.

    Anyway, it seems quite interesting and it’s not a danmaku/bullet hell type shmups from this trailer

    Four-player co-op shmup sounds pretty darn badass, but I gotta admit that when I saw it was from the Ikaruga guy I expected… something a bit less regular? Like it looked like a fine shmup, but I can’t really wrap my head around how the cards are gonna make it different from other games in the same genre like how the “black and white” mechanic separated Ikaruga from your average shmup.

  • I think this looks pretty fun, and I love the weird card mechanic. I seem to remember there were alot of card game hybrids in the ps2 era, always thought that was a cool gimmick. Hoping to see more of these card systems implemented in other genres.

    4 player co-op shmup sounds fun to me, i will definitely get this if it gets a localization.

    The beat at the start reminded me of Metal Slug boss battles, and the card thing reminds me of Rockman.EXE. >:D
