YAIBA, Inafune’s New Zombie Game, Also Has Ninjas And Mechs

By Ishaan . September 12, 2012 . 8:09am

Whatever Keiji Inafune’s new zombie game, titled YAIBA, is, he wants people outside of Japan to know about it. This morning, Inafune’s company, Comcept, had an English press release sent out along with a teaser video for YAIBA.

Inafune, who greenlit several new projects at Capcom, and was involved in a supervisory role with a number of their titles, felt that fans expected a zombie game from him, now that he’s struck out on his own as an independent developer.

“Everywhere I go, people ask me, ‘When is it coming?’” Inafune said. “There are so many zombie games out there, yet people ask me for a new Inafune zombie game. I am grateful for people’s respect for me as the ‘zombie game creator’ and to fulfill that I must answer their expectations with YAIBA.”

YAIBA allegedly came from “intense soul-searching” by Inafune, as he sought to create a game that was both novel and nostalgic.

“I am not at freedom to disclose the details just yet,” said Inafune. “But I am confident you will enjoy this new concept consisting of zombies with action, ninjas and mechs.”

  • ninjas + mech + zombie ? seems legit =P

    • Just Tim

I hope a Pirate class would be added, so that the Ninja/Zombie/Pirate/Robot quartet would be complete.

“But I am confident you will enjoy this new concept consisting of zombies with action, ninjas and mechs.”
    Me: yeah, hell yeah

  • Jesus, Inafune is going in!

  • MrJechgo

    Ugh, zombies again ?

Good grief, those games are becoming as numerous as FPS games… and that’s not a good news.

    • Just Tim

Don’t find it hard to believe if zombies are going to have a rise next decade, paralleling to that for FPS from the 1990s to last decade.

      • MrJechgo

I can understand the presence of zombies in survival horror titles like Resident Evil and House of the Dead, then we had Dead Rising, which parodied the genre in a good way… but then we had zombies in a modern military shooter (Call of Duty), a sandbox western (Red Dead Redemption) and other genres that don’t fit with zombies.

I can understand if horror is involved in the first place, but not if it’s an add-on.

  • z_merquise

    Zombies? Hmmmm . . .  (a bad-ass cyborg-ninja appeared) F–K, YEAH!!!

zombies with action, ninjas and mechs.

That already made me interested! Trailer felt like Madworld to me with what seems like an over-the-top violent game with stylish art-style.

Now I’m hyped to see more of this game!

  • Heavenly_King

By the small pieces of footage it looks like a PS360 game or even a PSVITA game (if the VITA´s POWA is used well)

  • malek86

Just wondering, how much was Inafune involved with the original Resident Evil series?

    • z_merquise

He’s not involved with any Resident Evil games. Maybe in RE 5 as an executive producer but other than that, I didn’t remember him having any input in any RE games.

      • malek86

Uhm. So that means he’s never actually done a zombie game. Well then, I’m looking forward to see what he can deliver with Yaiba.

        • z_merquise

Dead Rising 1 and 2 are the zombie games that Inafune is involved back at Capcom.

          • malek86

… oh right, I had forgot about those ><

        • Anime10121

He produced Dead Rising 1 which was fun, but then again he also produced Dead Rising 2 which IMO was not so fun, although that may be because of the location differences.

  • baha

Zombie Gundams, why didn’t Sunrise think of this?

    • neocatzon

G Gundam already had Pharaoh Gundam IV, Death Army (piloted by zombies.. I’m not lying!), and various stupid mobile suits. Maybe you prefer MS that acts like a zombie? No worries, Mobile Doll might fit your taste. Tokita Koichi is awesome.

      • Godmars

While true, that was anime. Not a game.

  • Wake

For a brief moment there I thought this was a game about the Manga/Anime Yaiba. Don’t get me wrong, a game about zombies/ninjas/mechs sounds awesome, but a Inafune game based on the Yaiba Manga/Anime? That would have been something to see.

    • Göran Isacson

Ha ha wow, I thought I was the only one who had read that. It would be cool and all, but also perhaps a bit too old-school? Or so I think, I don’t really know HOW old the Yaiba-manga is.

    • Yamaneko22

Yes, my 1st thought was about Yaiba Kurogane as well ;)

  • MrRobbyM

Those very brief clips of gameplay, or what I assume to be gameplay, looked very fun.

  • rinalicat

…I need to see more gameplay; from the clips I’ve seen, the artistic bones in my body demand more!! If the game is black and white with spurts of bold colours, I NEED IT SO BAD.

  • Samurai Zombie Nation, nuff said.

  • What’s funny is, I’m almost more intrigued by that “Akudaikan Manyuuki: Seigi no Yaiba” import game link that got stuck at the bottom of this article. I’d never heard of that game before, but looking into it, it’s apparently a video board game from Global-A, the company that usually does world-creating games (Dungeon Maker, My World My Way, etc.). I’ve always enjoyed video board games, and I’ve always found Global-A to be an underrated developer, so I’m curious to see what the two together would produce.

…Oh yeah, and YAIBA looks pretty good as well. ;)

  • Xekyo

Raiden’s GPS ran out of battery.

  • GreekGod88

take all of my money !
if its for Vita or ps3

the grafics sure look Gravity Rush level of detail..

  • Godmars

    You…have my interest.

Sure I was looking for an actual zombie survival/horror, DayZ type of game for consoles, but now we’re talking cyborg ninjas possibly leaping over cityscapes and wading bloody paths though undead – and other – hoards?

I could stand to see a bit more…

  • Anime10121

Looking REALLY good to me so far!

Looks very Vita-y to me, If this comes to Vita, and looks anything like that
concept vid, I think I’ll finally buy a Vita.

If its not Vita, its definitely WiiU/PS3/360, as that looks too good graphically to be 3DS bound (however I would not be adverse to that too, considering I already have a 3DS).

  • I’m not very fond of Zombie series (Highschool of the Dead, Resident Evil and Dead Rising typically being my limit), however this new game from Inafune looks really cool. Especially those (hopefully) clips of gameplay (no matter how short they were). I am definitely going to be following this game.

    • z_merquise

Zombies are really over-used so wasn’t excited at first but the instant I saw a cool cyborg-ninja slashing hordes of zombies combined with a stylish art-style and even a promise of mechs (giant mechs would be nice), I’m instantly impressed.

      This one is surely promising.

      • That was kind of my impression as well. As soon as the cyborg-ninja was introduced I kind of started to hyperventilate at the awesome potential this game could have.

  • Sean pocha

The art style looks nice, hopefully it’s not for handhelds, getting tired of good games going to them.

    • I’m tired of hearing console fans complaining when they get great stuff too.

  • Valtiel Ikari

    ok, now that was badass!

according to me Zombies+Ninjas+mechas+hevy rock music+action= badassery over 9000!!!!

  • E15

You had me at “Zombie Game, Also Has Ninjas And Mechs”  <3

  • Octavio Valdez

Zombies are like: “here we go again, just another story were we get the short end of the stick”, ZOMBIES NEED TO GO ON STRIKE (LOL)

  • $30632660

Intersting art design is all I can say.

  • I’m glad Inafune is thinking outside the box with the genre, has there ever been zombies and mechs together?

  • imaguni

I must admit I initially chuckled at the idea, but if it’s the kind of zany fun I expect from “Zombies! Ninja! Mechs!” then I’m all for it!

    • Testsubject909

Sounds more like a Suda51 style idea, but hey, I’m all for another game by Inafune.

      • imaguni

I’ve liked Suda51 games so far so that’s not bad news for me!

  • shuyai

I personally dont like those funky marvel comic style graphic style. games with similar style like neverdead and shadow of the damned are the worst. their witty one liner and humour are so cliched and lame unlike Devil may cry which has class. i guess thats the problem of japanese developer making western game more western than western game.

I hope their leave out those KAPOW and BOOOMM crap.

    • colorblindnightmare

TBH, i don’t think that will happen. After watching this short (but awesome) trailer and knowing inafune, i think this woill shine through in the end.

  • Leonard Norwood Jr.

Another idea implemented that Inafune is putting to work, and it’s one that pretty much anyone had some thoughts in there minds with such concept as well. I just don’t have much comment in response to this idea, but there will be lots of fun coming from this new game, I just know it.

  • Göran Isacson

So… how would one go about combinating mechas and zombies and ninjas? My first guess would be that humanity have creates cyborg out of ninja-troopers to fight a sudden epidemic of zombies. OR it could be a game where zombies are used as biological weapons and this is NOT a game about a zombie pandemic, but more like a war-story ala Metal Gear Solid where the mechaninja are part of some kind of weapons race.

Or it’s just a game where you are a mecha ninja for no reason and you gotta go kill zombies that appeared for no reason, because sometimes thinking isn’t what you’re supposed to do when it comes to videogames. I dunno, but I will say that I’m looking forward to see what this game will bring to the table.

    • Testsubject909

Thinking back on Metal Gear Solid 1… He is technically a zombie ninja cyborg, or cyborg ninja zombie, isn’t he?

      • Göran Isacson

That he would be. That he would be indeed, making him one thing more than Raiden, who is JUST a Cyborg Ninja.

    • I think it’s going to go somewhere around the Resident Evil movies, where zombies are a failed attempt to create super soldiers and the explode the world. The one success story, Mr. Mechaninja, now has to go out and clean up the mess.

      • Göran Isacson

Probably. It’s a cheesy enough story to be enjoyable without becoming too heavy, so it sounds likely Inafune would go for that development.

  • “The Dead Will Die Again”……….. Sold! =^_^=

  • Jake Deerberg

Was hopin’ for a Dead rising announcement but hey Cyborg Ninjas, zombies and Mechs? I’m in.

  • Solomon_Kano

An action game? With a zombie-killing ninja robot? With cel-shaded graphics? Do want.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Damn, the moment i see the Ninja there, it gives me the Shinobi vibe there lol.^_^

And seeing the graphics there, i believe this should be Vita title there as i am not really sure whether 3DS can handle 3D environment there. Or maybe, this is a console experience game.^_^
