PlayStation Vita Reels In A Moe Fishing Game

By Ishaan . September 15, 2012 . 10:30am

PlayStation Vita is getting a moe fishing game. Let’s Fish! Hooked On is headed to the system in the U.S. and Europe, courtesy of publisher, Wired Productions. The game is developed by Tokyo-based SIMS, who work on the Bass Fishing series.

Let’s Fish! Hooked On has four modes—World Tour, Challenge, Training and Underwater. World Tour is the game’s story mode. Let’s Fish has four characters, each with their own abilities and story. Challenge mode is quick challenges with online rankings. Training speaks for itself.

Finally, Underwater mode is the gallery mode, and lets you view your prized catches. In this mode, you can move the Vita around to control the camera, and observe the behaviours of all the fish you’ve caught.

For hardcore fishing fans, Wired Productions say Let’s Fish! has nine different kinds of fish to catch and 240 lures to earn. The game is spread across 11 outdoor stages.

But that’s a TERRIBLE game! Look at the video of it on youtube! Terrible! Get Fishing Resort on Wii if you want a great fishing game!

    • M’iau M’iaut

It’s just Sega Bass with a twin tails rather than a redneck. The throwback homage to horrible looking live action video games has always been part of the charm.

That said Fishing Resort is a Yuji Naka game, which should mean more love than that one got.

      • Lightthrower

Yuji and his company Prope really made the perfect game in Fishing Resort… I hope they make a sequel.

        • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

It’s a nice take on an otherwise largely unoccupied category, and it really was a fun and nice game for its price. “Perfect” though…? There are more ways to improve the game, like flavor text for each species, or more hints on which lure and bait can be used for which fish. That said, I did enjoy it for tens of hours, and am waiting for a sequel myself. With proper improvements, it could even become a remarkable series in its category.

          • PoweredByHentai

Yeah, the game isn’t like the SNES Bass Fishing game but it does scratch that itch.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

I just hope future installments implement some alternate control schemes in case your arms get tired from all the reeling…

          • PoweredByHentai

            All the “reeling”, eh?  XD

I guess that would have to depend on whether they ask us for feedback or not.  I know that most games that were released in Japan include a site for people to register their feedback to the developers.  I’m not entirely sure if we have a similar process here in the US or not.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

I swear to god, you have no idea how my arms felt after reeling in a Xiphactinus for minutes.

          • PoweredByHentai

I don’t know about you but my arms weren’t sore from reeling any of the fish in the game.  I could certainly understand if your arms got tired from holding the Vita close to your face, but then again, I haven’t had to do that either.

          • Testsubject909

I don’t know about you, but to me it makes me question how physically fit Drakos is.

          • PoweredByHentai

Lol. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who was kind of surprised by Drakos’s statement.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

            @PoweredByHentai:disqus @Testsubject909:disqus

You guys are reading too much into what I said. The main reason I suggested alternate controls is for convenience; imagine having to do the same motion over and over and over for every fish, even the ones you know you can handle and just get it over with. That said, I wasn’t kidding about that giant fish “boss fight” taking minutes to finish.

(And just to be sure we’re on the same page, I’m talking about Fishing Resort. I don’t have a PSV, nor am I particularly attracted to this game.)

          • PoweredByHentai

            @DrakosAmatras:disqus
Ah, Fishing Resort. That would certainly explain the disconnect that we’re having in this discussion.

          • Testsubject909

I was primarily teasing, nothing more. Sorry bout that.

  • Highasthesky

I can’t say i’m not happy about this, maybe just for the wrong reasons(Refer to cover).

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S2UKKIGGOA4V5EIFXAD7BQQOV4 Heehee

Why not just make a Grander Musashi game?

  • Paradox me

Is that a bandage.. over top of her thigh high? I don’t think that’ll be very effective at all.

I’m also not sure why they’re blushing. Is fishing embarrassing?

    • M’iau M’iaut

Must be responding to the catcalls coming from the ecchi hentai otaku pervos riding in a boat just off camera.

      • Guy Wesley

        That comment made my day!

      • PoweredByHentai

You’ve never watched Nurse Witch Komugi-chan Magikarte, have you?

        • M’iau M’iaut

Of course I have, and Soultaker. May not have thought about it when posting my response, but moe girls are supposed to blush at dirty stuffs too.

          • PoweredByHentai

Moe girls blushing at dirty stuffs is understandable, but when that moe girl in question hooks earthworms as bait on her fishing lure, I would imagine that such a moe girl wouldn’t be flustered by “dirty” stuffs.

Also, Soultaker was a pretty underrated series. It was where Shinbo started his directorial talent that made him famous for Hidamari Sketch and Bakemonogatari.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tianyu-Wei/100000304118353 Tianyu Wei

Oh wow. Nurse Witch komugi-chan… the memories… and Soul Taker lol…. damn that was a long time ago, makes me feel old… Those were during the “height” of fansubs and when every Anime were almost guaranteed 24+ episodes lol…

          • PoweredByHentai

Eh, there were many anime that were basically half season shows (12-13 episodes) like Crest/Banner of the Stars and whatnot.  Back then, there was a decent mix of half-season and full season shows.  Nowadays, it is leaning heavily towards the half-season format and renaming that to “full season”.  =/

    • http://ggftw.com/forum/ Monkey_T

Probably got slapped in the face a few times by a fish.

    • PoweredByHentai

She’s not blushing.  That’s just how some artists draw their characters.  Nurse Witch Komugi-chan Magikarte had a similar art style.

      http://i45.tinypic.com/16h29va.jpg

I wouldn’t be surprised if it were the same artist.

    • CirnoLakes

      Moe is its own logic!

Strange that it’s only being released here. Release date?

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Am i reading that wrong here? Only 9 kinds of fish to catch?

  • Locklear93

Moe… fishing?  I’m open to correction, but that just seems like it’d be a pretty narrow slice in a venn diagram. <_<

    DAY ONE.

  • PoweredByHentai

    YESSSSSS!!!!

Imported the game when it came out and loved it!  XD

    • Testsubject909

Hmm… Suddenly you got me way more curious about the gameplay.

Care to elaborate a bit on the experience or should I just wait/search for a trailer?

      • PoweredByHentai

It’s a fishing game and it is fairly easy to get into.  You have a certain time limit to fish in a certain stage and within that stage, you can choose a spot to throw your lure and hopefully catch a large enough fish for you to qualify or win against your competitors.  Once you throw the lure, you need to wiggle the lure to entice the fish to bite. When a fish bites on your lure, you need to reel it in without letting the fish escape.

You start off with fairly basic fishing equipment and lures and the more you progress, the better equipment/lures you can pick up.

I’m not sure how else to explain it because it is one of those things where having some prior experience (real fishing experience or from playing other fishing games) makes it incredibly intuitive.

  • Guy Wesley

Well, that’s interesting to an extent.
So this will get moe anime lovers into fishing?

  • raitouniverse

    The Vita is saved.

  • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

Time to place an order on that Vita.

I like this because it’s giving some unique character (for a lack of a better word) to the Vita that I think all modern consoles need, sort of like what made the PS1 and other systems of that era such interesting consoles.
You get a small publisher with little to no recognition with any community, coming in with an oddball game and let them both into the wild. Call me silly, but I find that exciting.

  • Spider-Man

Only nine different kinds of fishes…? Will they be grouped into their own category and have subspecies or will there literally be nine fishes?

    • raitouniverse

      Makes ya think, don’t it?

  • Safros9

This is definitely the first thing that came to mind when I thought of “Killer app that the Vita needs.” Day one buy.
But in all seriousness I will give it a try. Can’t really mess up a fishing game… right?

  • https://twitter.com/#!/Ojsinnerz Firo_Prochainezo

    Vita is saved.

EDIT: Dammit, people beat me to this, haha.

  • Kefkiroth

Of all the games that would be localized…I didn’t actually think this would make it… Now let’s see that F/SN port, or hell, Project Diva f!

    • Testsubject909

Yeah, seeing a game like this getting localized certainly makes you think that really every Vita games should just get localized.

Which is to say… I’m still waiting and hoping for news of Project Diva F myself… And of Earth Defense Force for the Vita…

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

I’m appalled none of the Vocaloid games have ever been localized considering how little text there is to them. At most they’d need to add the lyrics but damn..it can’t be that expensive. Only thing I can think of that holds them back is, if maybe, they have to pay royalties or something for each song~.

Outside of that, it boggles the mind that those games never make it to the west~.

  • Shiki

I’m not having high expectations for this , because , probably this will be released as a PSN title , WHICH I HATE!! , but if not , it’s a DAY ONE BUY for me!

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Totally makes sense to localize THIS of all games. Yep. Totally.

    • http://papped.webatu.com papped

Localization has more to do with sales expectations versus cost, rather than just sales overall.

If the game is cheap to localize then they don’t have to sell that much.

  • Nelson Cheng

Wtf? Only 9 fish to catch? Not really a selling point there

  • http://chronotwist.deviantart.com/ JustThisOne

… But can you date them? :I

    “A salmon? Onii-chan~ You shouldn’t have…”

“The intertwining – and often humorous – relationships between the game’s characters drives the story”
To me, that implies it may have some dating element

    • Testsubject909

For a moment, I thought you wanted to date the 9 different fishes.

      • Locklear93

        Don’t rule it out!

        • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

Haha. I still wonder what those rumors were about.

      • Andres Pena

        HumanxFish dating FTW lol

      • DanijoEX

        Had to like this one.

Fish out of water… Nope doesn’t work.

  • brian yep

WOW, THIS IS A SURPRISE ANNOUNCEMENT.
    Physical in both regions?

  • superdry

If this game is getting a physical release, I’m buying it on the merit of that cover art assuming that is the final cover art.

    • http://animereviews.co/ Nadav

This is the final box art for the Japanese edition. The U.S. edition will show a big bass on the cover. And since bass are too obscene for Australia they will enlarge the Bass and show only his fin on the box for the Australian edition. Europe will get the original Japanese cover, but the game will come out in Europe approximately a year and a half after the U.S. Everything I wrote up to this point is a big fat lie.

  • drproton

    <3 Akio Watanabe

The game looks pretty shitty though.

  • Learii

i wonder if do  you tap the button or  hold the button when you catch a fish

    • PoweredByHentai

Depends on how the fish is resisting.

  • Oltheros

Whats the word on voice acting I wonder? I don’t want it dubbed with a psuedo-cutesy English voice.

  • Angel wing

I like game with moe girls.

    This game has moe girls.

    Im buying this.

  • AndyFe

    That’s surprising actually but awesome.

I’m glad I didn’t get around to importing this but I’ll pick this up when it comes out

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

The people at Sony -DO- want the Vita to sell, right? They -DO- want it to have some great games, right? So, they localize a fishing game? This has to be a joke. A fishing game. I…wow…I think I’m just going to have to power through this one and, once again, turn away from even thinking of buying a Vita.

P.S. The only time fishing is fun is if it’s in Breath of Fire III.

    • Locklear93

To be fair, it’s not Sony localizing this. :P  It’s not Sony’s fault if the third party publishers want to develop and publish niche titles.

      • M’iau M’iaut

@Kashell:disqus And its not the third party publishers job to sell Vitas, only to make money on the games that they publish for said system.

    • Ladius

Sony has nothing to do with this game’s localization, though. What should they do, deny its publisher the possibility to release it in the US because it’s too nichequirkyetc so that Vita has even less games?

It isn’t like Wired Productions translating this game stopped Sony (or anyone else) from localizingreleasing some high budget blockbuster game able to change this platform’s success.

  • Jeremy Sumrak

No, no, no…the title is much too short.

    It should be:

“Let’s Fish! MoeMoe DokiDoki Tackle Hooked On Challenge Ganbare!”

  • Ladius

Aside from the actual game, the most interesting thing for me is seeing another little publisher dabbling with niche Japanese games.

I hope Wired Productions will consider other games in the future, and I’m kinda surprised they’re going to make this a retail release when other publisher seems to be scared to push their niche games that way.

  • Riseabovethesky

And how many ladies can I catch? I would use the karaoke lure :3

  • wahyudil

it should be titled “Moe Fishing” …
