Ace Attorney 5 Sales Forecasts Are “Aggressive” Say Capcom USA

By Ishaan . September 17, 2012 . 12:30pm

Capcom were quick to announce a western release for Ace Attorney 5, but there hasn’t been any word on spin-off title, Ace Attorney Investigations 2, seeing a western release in any form yet.

Asked if high sales of Ace Attorney 5 and the upcoming Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD release on iOS would help sway a localization decision, Capcom USA Senior Vice-President, Christian Svensson, says it wouldn’t hurt.

AAI2 isn’t being held hostage so please don’t read this that way but if they do well, they certainly can’t hurt,” Svensson says on the Capcom forums. “Justification for higher forecasts via stronger than expected sales in the franchise would be helpful.”

Svensson also added another important point that fans may like to know.

“Bear in mind… the forecasts for AA5 I’ve put in are aggressive (high) relative to the historical performance of the franchise (needed to make sure it came over), so I’m counting on you guys to not make me a liar.”

Sorry but now I have images of fans arming themselves with guns and swords and storming game shops when AA5 comes out XD

    • Testsubject909

      Guns? Swords? Pshawww.

I’ll be charging with a Spear, a Forklift and a Rocket Launcher filled with Money.

    • s07195

I’ll be there with my trusty stepladder. :P

I Really want to Play AAI2 so Lets hope forthe best!

    • Aoshi00

Yeah, but fans started to get lukewarm after Gyakuten 4 (w/ Apollo) and then AAI 1 & 2.  So I think it’s great they decide to bring Phoenix back as the main after Apollo and Edgeworth for 2 games, fans should be more excited. I did like AAI 2 much better than 1 though, a very good conclusion for the Edgeworth story.

Would definitely pick up both the Jpn and US ver (my Jpn 3DS is small though, compared to the US XL *.*). I like the 3D models of this much better than the crossover game.

  • Shadowman

Of course it Phoenix Wright if it was Phoenix Wright meet Professor Layton it would be even more aggressive.

  • British_Otaku

“AAI2 isn’t being held hostage so please don’t read this that
way but if they do well, they certainly can’t hurt,” Svensson says on
    the Capcom forums.

So basically it is being held hostage and you want me to buy three copies on launch day?

Understood. Assuming there is no BS involved with the development of an AA or Okami game, I’ll be there.

  • SirRichard

Well, here’s hoping it meets that forecast for the good of the franchise, then.

  • AlteisenX

They put him into UMvC3, because people demanded it…. yet we get a “possibly if sales are high enough”… I get it but… the odds of them going back to NDS AFTER Phoenix Wright 5 comes out in North America are just… so so slim…. and we all know Capcom’s track record with this stuff… They never go back. *Points at MML3*… *Points at Mega Man in general*

    • They’ve specifically said that if AAI2 were to ever come over, it would not be on the Nintendo DS. It would be on a different platform. 3DS eShop and iOS are the common assumption.

      • Testsubject909

I really hope they port to the Android market personally. Not a big fan of Apple products or some of their policies.

        • You always do like asking for the impossible, don’t you. Android over iOS. Vita over 3DS. :)

    • LaserVision

Are you really going to single out Capcom? It’s not like the Last Window, the SaGa DS games and the PSP Suikodens are going to come out any time soon.

  • Göran Isacson

… A’right. If it’s time to put up or shut up, then I guess I’ma get my gloves on and prepare to put me up a big fight. It’s Ace Attourney, you know I’m getting it.

  • DanteJones

Sven, you sir are a gentleman and a scholar. I was already going to get this, but consider me sold! …again!

  • pressstart

Guess I’ll preorder it down the line. I believe in Sven, regardless of what’s happened since SF4 came out.

  • Nicolas Vasquez

This franchise is one of my favorites and i want to support it, but what he is saying about the prequisites for a ATI2 localization, is something that would be okay with companies like NISA or Xseed, not a giant like capcom, specially when its a Text heavy game with little voiceover.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

But the whole problem here is it is still business.

Do you think a company no matter how big they are would love to get some lost that are almost certain to happen here?

  • Tales_of_Master

I can’t see GK2 being localized in hard copies anymore, an eshop release is more likely. Ace Attorney became one of my most loved Capcom franchises after finishing the original trilogy (3 or 4 months ago) and I would love to see more of it. I’m gonna be as aggressive as I can be with AA5, by telling everyone I know to buy it, in hope to see what the end result will be.

    • Testsubject909

See if you can get Ace Attorney Investigations, it’s good fun and Miles Edgeworth is awesome.
Edit: PS. Don’t force people to buy it. Coerce them.

Make them play the games, and when they’re hooked… Tell them there’s an upcoming Ace Attorney and that the people behind the game stated in an interview that if it does well, the odds will be all that higher that more of those titles will come to the west.

  • kylehyde

    I’ll do my part.

  • Izzy Miyake

Alright punks, this time no R4/M3 pirating for you.

EVERYONE buys the game this time.

    • i hate when ppl first blame the flashcart users and dont bother to blame the used goods and borrowed games ppl

      • ffboi7

truer words have never been said

      • The thing is, there aren’t going to be any used copies on launch. o3o

      • Testsubject909

I borrowed Ace Attorney from my sister and then went to buy the games myself. My friends borrowed Ace Attorney from me and then went on to buy the games themselves.

Does that mean I should be blamed?

Edit: PS. We bought the games new.

Edit 2: PS#2: I would also blame importers. Think about Ace Attorney 2 and 3. They were both set with full dual-language support in Japan, making the Japanese Retail version the superior version, which appealed to many. After all, they could get their hands on the game at an earlier time, have it fully translated in English and on top of that have a full other language available to them, that was taken out of the English localization.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

The whole question, is how many people actually did that here? I believe more people will actually choose not to buy the game anymore as they already finished the game.

And pw here is a vn with one ending which means replaybility is very low.

    • 9thsage

That should be easy…there really is no such thing for 3DS games so even if people wanted to pirate it they wouldn’t be able to.

  • Anto Jia

when it comes out in europe i’m going to buy a 3ds just for this game

  • psycho_bandaid

I’m there day one. Don’t know anyone else with a 3DS so I probably will not hype it to my friends.

  • malek86

The way he says it, sounds almost like the franchise has been struggling in the west.

    • Investigations definitely struggled. I think the games before that did fine.

      • malek86

But if the main games did well and only the spinoff on the already-aging DS struggled, I don’t think that would be a great indication of the franchise’s future performance (especially for a story-oriented series).

In other words, bringing back Phoenix Wright and changing to a newer platform can only do good.

But if the guy made the forecast “aggressive”, and then the game fails to reach the forecast because it was too aggressive, that would be like shooting themselves on the foot.

        • Maybe that’s why he made the forecast aggressive. Because he thinks that the franchise can/will do better on 3DS. But yeah, it remains to be seen how high forecasts are being set and whether or not the retail release of the game will live up to them.

    • Testsubject909

In terms of reputation, no. But from what I remember, the sales were declining at one point, in which case, financially, sadly, it did.

  • Aight, time to save some money!

This guetto dude will try the best to support Ace Attorney!

  • Lazulis

    I’d buy it day 1. And I don’t even have a 3DS yet. I’ll probably borrow the 3DS xl my friend’s going to get…

  • Testsubject909

    Don’t worry sir. I don’t own a 3DS, but I’ll buy Ace Attorney 5 (And SMT4) day 1, whether or not I have a 3DS.

(Because I can buy a 3DS whenever and have that chip into Nintendo’s wallet, but a game? Short window of opportunity to make your money count there.)

    •  Though you will have the games sitting there…MOCKING YOU :I lol

  • Neophoton

AA5’s up there with Bravely Default and SMT4 as titles making me not regret getting a 3DS on Black Friday last year. I’ll very likely buy it at launch unless if I’m tight on money or something.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, you can get them on these year black friday^_^ as wii u will be taking spotlight that time. So u can get xl easier there.

      • Neophoton

Muh? I already have a 3DS. I meant it as a comment of “I initially regret buying a 3DS at all and only got it because it was marked down on Black Friday”.

I wouldn’t do larger models either, I have small hands so smaller is better for me when it comes to handhelds. In this case, the original 3DS was a good size, so I’m content with it. My boyfriend would probably be interested in the XL model, however, so I’ll probably poke him with a reminder, seeing as how he’s a huge AA fan and also interested in BD.

  • scratchbach

I’ll buy 3 copies. One for myself to play, one to display…and another to display.

  • Christian Wright

i bet there’s going to be suit color DLC

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Can’t you guys have any positive thought here? PW franchise till now has been free from dlc problem. Why the hate here?

      • Christian Wright

????? no one’s hating. i love phoenix wright. i only disagree with capcom’s practices. we all saw what happened to sfxt.

        • M’iau M’iaut

Street Fighter and other fighters had DLC long before folks decided DLC=evil. The point made was that this is a game that hasn’t had DLC, a genre that doesn’t have a history of DLC and a system without much DLC. There is no practice to disagree with before DLC for Phoenix Wright gets announced.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

No prob Sven.^_^ I will surely get 2 copy there. One for me and one for my friend there.^_^

Now, lets hope that others will actually buy the game.T_T

  • Freud_Hater

Oh, you can count on my money, random Capcom dude. Believe it! (I actually hate Naruto, but this seemed appropriate)

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

I didn’t like courtroom drama tv shows until I started playing the Ace Attorney games.  Now I can watch Law & Order without getting bored.  It’s always on cable tv.  Anyway, I hope everyone buys the new Pheonix Wright game so AAI2 gets a western release.

  • ivanchu77

I have all the games of this franchise ( except AAI2 ;_;) and no way i´m gonna miss this game, day 1 without a doubt

  • I’m disgusted that the fans aren’t being aggressive enough if they want that one game released here so badly.

    • Why being butthurt when a solution has been proposed? Agressiveness is not gonna help any, we need to seek for solutions rather than sink deeper into the problem and search for culprits.

      • What solution was it? Express hope for change and encourage Capcom while they continue to mistreat you?

        • The insinuations in this article suggests if AA5 goes fine, AAI2 “might not hurt” to localize.

Look, as much as Capcom did some mistakes in the past acting all butthurt and doing boycotts is childish and overall pathetic, you will only damage the company, meaning no money and no money means no localization.

Get it now? If you don’t like it well too bad for you but bussiness is just bussiness.

          • There is no guarantee that being nice to Capcom will make any of that happen. If you want any change, take it by force. It’s the only way you’re getting anything at this point.

          • There’s no guarantee the boycott will work either, in fact as stated you’ll only damage Capcom and obviously the slight chance for localization will drop to zero.

You’ll only make Capcom to try another route to recover from it’s lost, that if your attempt of boycott will ever succeed.

          • The only way to ensure that one game leads to another is to directly send the message. Merely hinting at it is not good enough. Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to be direct about it. In other words, short of any direct action, you’re just leaving this to chance. Given Capcom’s past track record about this, I don’t like the odds. No matter what happens, we all lose. And by “we”, I mean the people who care the most about it.

          • Do you have some other way to show Capcom that you won’t put up with their mistreatment of Western gamers? Continuing to give them money just undermines that sentiment in my opinion.

    • How aggressive are we fans supposed to be? Threats? Boycotts? I speak for myself when at the time I simply felt like giving up on the new stuff and just waiting till my JPN was good enough. For others they may have looked for translation guides or simply given up. They were pretty stern (if I remember correctly) about not bringing it over here. What’s the point of being angry when you are talking to wall that has the word NO painted in big red letters?

      • The ideal solution is to aggressively cut off all support to Capcom until you get what you want. But since gamers are so easily persuaded and distracted by announcements of new unrelated things, they’ll get cheated like this forever.

        • But cutting off support also cuts of any money that could have gone towards localizing the game. They might even pull out completely. Then we’d be left with nothing.

          • It’s not like Capcom is going to go out of business if this happens. In desperation, their only option is to change their ways the way fans have been asking for years. The only things holding this back are that not enough fans are asking for change, and they will continue getting money no matter what they do because fans care too much about themselves over seeking the betterment of a company they care about.

  • LaserVision

Svensson may or may not be a liar but based on everything I’ve read on the internet, he’s apparently a stupidhead who kills Megamen and steals Street Fighter fans’ money at night.

    • M’iau M’iaut

      Well played Sir, well played.

      • What a pleasant fellow.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

  • Bundle it! *sigh*
Anyway, I’ll be buying this even if I don’t have a 3DS I want to see more of you Phoenix! I missed yooou ( ^.^)>

  • Areuto

wow so it’s either buy our game and we might think about it or don’t and hell no. Well I know what I’m gifting my friends for Christmas

  • Ethan_Twain

Okay, that’s a fair deal.  To make sure franchise fans got what was most important to them (Ace Attorney 5), you promised that it would sell well.  So this can work perfectly.  You provide a quality game, we buy it.  We all buy it.  After we (the market) collectively turned our nose up at Ace Attorney Investigations, asking us to make sure we pitch in and do our part is not unreasonable.  We’ve failed Ace Attorney before after all.

So I’ll do my part.  I will not only purchase, but pre-order this game.  Who here will also do their part?

    • No objections there. The franchise has never managed to disappoint – even counting Apollo Justice and Ace Attorney Investigations – and the confirmation of AA5 getting a western release (Europe in particular) has been hands down the best piece of gaming news all year! And if the sales of AA5 encourage Capcom to re-evaluate their stance about AAI2, all the better!

      • Andrew Chen

        “No objections there.”
Oh ho I see what you did there

  • TheRealMalek

Since 3ds isn’t hackable yet. I think we will have “true” sales. But i really fear that if Japan or US aren’t stellar europe will never see it…

  • Enma_Kozato

I’m sorry, but I can’t help being wary since I don’t want to get burned again like I did with Sengoku Basara >:’T

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

No need to worry there.^_^ Just keep spreading the word to all your friend there and ask them to buy this game.^_^ It is will be okay there.^_^

  • s6_miller

I’m just hoping that they’ll eventually release all six ds games (including AAI2) on one 3ds cart.

  • XiaomuArisu

    I have AA 1,2,3,4 and AAI,aggresive enough?
Or should I give you all my money while screaming Take That!?!

  • RadShiro

I hate you Capcom. You are evil money grubbers.

But I love Phoenix Wright a billion times over. So you shall have my money. I’ll hand over my money, but I’ll hate it…for like 2 seconds until the game is in my hands then I’ll just squee like a fanboy.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

All game company is money grubber if you have not noticed.T_T

  • I have every AA game (including AAI) and bought AA1 when it came out a couple years ago on iOS.

I have the right to an attorney…an Ace Attorney!!

  • Permafry42

I actually bought the japanese version of ace attorney investigations 2, in addition to 1 copy every game released in the series so far (the 3 wiiware releases, and the ds aa4 and investigations 1). at this point i’m more eager for the fan-translation of ace attorney investigations 2 than i am for the potential of a legitimate release because at least that release seems to be coming close to an actual release, and the legit release may be ios only. as someone who hates apple and everything it stands for, the only way i will buy ace attorney investigations 2 again will be if it is either on the eshop, the wii u shop, or another platform like steam or something. just as long as it’s not apple.
