Bravely Default Trailer Gives Another Peek At Jobs, Costumes, And Battles

By Ishaan . September 25, 2012 . 10:00am

Square Enix have released a new trailer for upcoming 3DS RPG, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, showing off the four main characters, each one of which is intrinsically linked with its features and story, the job system, and battles. Watch it below:

We’ll have another feature on Bravely Default from the game’s recent Iwata Asks feature with Nintendo’s president later this afternoon, where producer, Tomoya Asano, and writer, Naotaka Hayashi, discuss their goal to make the game a major Square Enix RPG.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy will be released on October 11th in Japan.

Is it me or does something feel off about Ringabel’s voice?

    Looks lovely. Can’t wait.

Yep, just waiting patiently for that localization announcement. ^_^

Aren’t we all. ^^ This has to be the best broken record I’ve heard in a long time.

I hope they bring it over, maybe it’d help sales a little if it was titled Final Fantasy Gaiden: Flying Fairy to make that connection back to 4 Warriors of Light?

I rather they don’t, in my opinion. I want the game to be standalone, and not depend on the FF name; I do see the connection between the games, though I never played the 4 Warriors of Light.

As much as I want to agree, I think Square Enix would probably brand it in some way to form a “series” similar to what Atlus did with the MegaTen games – build it into a franchise in the US to let players know it’s under the same banner, so to speak. The company that did 4WOL also did BDFF (and Final Fantasy 3 Remake), and while 4WOL didn’t do so well I can see them try to improve sales by using the Final Fantasy Gaiden banner to cover both games, increasing sales of both while building publicity for the new “brand”.

Which are you more likely to buy – a game with a pants-on-head stupid name in English (Bravely Default: Flying Fairy) or a game with a pedigree you’re familiar with that holds the same style as another game you may have played (Final Fantasy Gaiden: Flying Fairy)?

Yes, I realize that the title holds significance in the battle system and story, but you CANNOT deny it sounds moronic in English.

Not necessarily moronic in English. It just doesn’t hold the same attention grabbing element that Final Fantasy Gaiden does…

I’d love to see the game release here with its original name, but I too can see the perks of Square releasing it under the FF banner. Not that it’s my preferred form, but it could help the game sell more if it held the FF name.

Though it doesn’t only apply to the west. Branding, as you said, would be the easiest way to “guarantee” sales of those sitting on the fence and to others. However, with all the good a brand represents and provides to (future) titles, being able to deviate from the well-known brand(s) and create other brands to relieve the stress of the established ones. While Atlus have benefited from selling underneath this banner, the same cannot be said for SE.

I won’t lie, and most would agree, that the title is not one of the best. In recent times, the confidence of some fans have been shaken by recent titles under the Final Fantasy name. While the game appears to have the potential to restore some confidence in SE to some, it would help SE to show fans that we don’t need to rely on that name whenever we have trouble.

Totally. But we’ve grown accustom to it since we hear it a lot.

I’ve begun to wonder if the Engrishy name was part of the SNES/PS1 era homage that this game so clearly is about.

“Bravely Default” sounds so ‘unique’ that they might just get it to work here. Especially considering something like Flying Fairy or Brave Fairy is just as odd, and Final Fantasy Gaiden would only make a lot of folks wonder what the h a ‘gaiden’ is.

          • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

It possible could be especially with the vibe the game gives off.

I love the name! Though at times it feels weird to say but I hope it comes over   – with name intact. Like you said, the name is “unique” that it makes it stand out.

You know its called Bravely Default because of those are 2 names of gameplay elements if anything it would be FFG:BD not Flying Fairy since I have yet to see a Flying Fairy.

i agree i dont want it to be branded a final fantasy title as its not its amazing on its own and no offence to any final fantasy fans but the only one i really liked was 7

I would rather a supposed new IP and spiritual sequel to 4HoL not rely on mere name recognition.  Then again what do I know right?  The FF fanbase is more divisive then ever after the whole current XIII fiasco and the launch of XIV.

Though “The Fairy Brave Story” would be neat. That’s a play on the Zodiac Brave Story from Tactics btw.

Anything that makes this game sell is good enough for me. While I wouldn’t mind having this as a new IP altogether in the west, if rebrandishing this as a Final Fantasy game would help bump sales up, then I definitely wouldn’t mind. I want it to sell because I want more games like that in my region :)

I’m not sure that would be a good idea, as I think the Final Fantasy branding did more harm than good for 4 Warriors of Light. The Final Fantasy name brings expectations that are too grand and too specific to allow for any deviation from series norms. Just look at the ill fated Spirits Within. Flopped because it didn’t have chobobos or buster swords, but take away the Final Fantasy name, and it’s actually a pretty impressive film.

Tiz should be voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch in the US release. Just really seems like a character for him.

Gorgeous stuff, getting a real “classic Final Fantasy vibe” from this trailer, honestly. It’s hitting Japan soon, so let’s hope they decide to give it a shot outside it!

Loved it at first site (even with its ludicrous, no sense having name)!   Square, I freking love this, give me more glorious games for my 3DS:)  Their output for 3DS has been some of the best material out for that console, not a dud so far yet, Kingdom Hearts, Theatrythm, and Bravely Default, all FANTASTIC games (well BD’s not out yet, but this game CANNOT possibly go wrong)!

The game looks ugly (especially the character designs), but the gameplay looks excellent and I’m hoping the story will be epic. This is a game to buy a 3DS for.

pretty much everything about this game makes me wish that these were the guys heading the Square. . .
