Level 5’s Youkai Watch Is A Nintendo 3DS Game

By Ishaan . October 13, 2012 . 12:23am

Youkai Watch, the mysterious game that Level 5 showed off at their Level 5 Vision event last year, is a Nintendo 3DS title, according to the new issue of CoroCoro magazine.

When Level 5 debuted Youkai Watch, they described it as another multimedia franchise along the lines of Inazuma Eleven and The Little Battlers eXperience. The game’s protagonist wears a watch that allows him to see and interact with ghosts.

Level 5 haven’t announced a release date for Youkai Watch yet, but you can watch the game’s debut trailer here.

    OHHH Come on…

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

? News on new game is not nice?

      • Tom_Phoenix

I think that’s his way of expressing disappointment with the platform without breaking the rules. =P

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Lol, people seems to get this desperate nowadays.-_-‘

  • Suicunesol

THAT IS SURPRISING! I specifically remember quite a number of people last year saying that this game’s footage looked like console or Vita material. That it’s for the 3DS is… unexpected, but at the same time makes absolute sense because of the 3DS’s current growing popularity in Japan.

It’s just that footage… it just looks too good. Don’t hate me for this, but I have a hunch that the graphics in the trailer wont be the same. But I would love to be wrong.

    • Yeah, I doubt those will be the final visuals at all. This isn’t the first time L5 have done target render trailers.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I don’t know here. Isn’t Labyrinth no Kanata actually looks really great.(In 3D especially.) So i kinda think that this game should be able to achieve that kind of quality there.

        • Oh, 3DS is more than capable, judging by Capcom’s games and even Snake Eater 3D. Just that Level 5’s focus isn’t on pushing hardware. :)

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Maybe there. As i remember the latest Little Battlers is not as smooth as the one i predict it should be.

Hope they will put more effort for this one.^_^ And i thought this game is also coming to PS3?

          • Nope, no platforms were announced at all until today.

    • Peace Legacy

Yeah, I did remember even debating with you about it here: ” http://www.siliconera.com/2011/10/14/first-look-at-level-5s-new-franchise-youkai-watch/
…and now looking back, I think you probably was right
The visual certainly wasn’t impossible for the 3DS in a technical perspective, but it was more of the fact that there would be no reason for this kind of game to push out that kind of visual on this kind of console (it would be needlessly difficult and not very cost efficient)
Oh well, let see what Level-5 have for us

    • I was thinking the same thing, my guess is they originally didn’t really have a platform (hence the unannounced platform), but were heavily leaning towards Vita. They likely later switched to 3DS because they realized the younger audience gravitates more towards the 3DS. Another reason alot of us thought Vita is because it just seemed like Level 5 would develop a Vita exclusive title given their past record.

Another multimedia franchise? Consider Youkai Watch anime coming.^_^

  • hoez

You know, I can see Youkai being 3DS first… and then PS3 perhaps? ?_?

    • sd28

i see it more likely being wii u for connectivity or a cheap spin off ala srtikers

  • riceisnice

Level-5 certainly likes that monster raising Genre. We got Imagins, Ghosts, Robots, and Middle schoolers.

  • homezu221

I’m a bit surprised. I also thought Youkai Watch would have been released either on the Wii U or PS3 to take advantage of the visuals like, Ni No Kuni. Either way, I hope Level-5 is planning on bringing it over to Europe and America. Also, still waiting for a Time Travelers announcement.

  • Learii

i tho this would be in ps vita but i guess not how sad =(

  • I like the art and the idea of raising cute ghosts. But the memory of a certain Ni No Kuni for DS just makes me feel… I STILL WANT THAT BOOK! T_T

I think this will be great in the U.S

    • I think the general obsessing over HD graphics holds back the potential of games.  Instead of focusing on creating a unique, fun experience companies are bogged down by the idea that they need to out perform the last big game with a bigger, flashier title.

  • Level 5 is capable of making a good game for any platform, there is no loss of potential at all. If anything the graphics here would impress more than if it was a PS3 game because it is weaker hardware being in possibly more use of the system’s potential.

    • MrRobbyM

This is true though sometimes, some games have such a beautiful, simple art style that the clarity of a higher resolution is like the cherry on top and really just brings the whole thing together. Just speaking generally, I don’t even remember what this game looks like :P

    • yeah, I think the general obsessing over HD graphics holds back the potential of games.  Instead of focusing on creating a unique, fun experience companies are bogged down by the idea that they need to out perform the last big game with a bigger, flashier title.

Here we go again with the “the graphic would look much
better or would have more potential should it be on [insert name] system”.

Yes, Ni no kuni look fantastic on PS3, but this latest new
title of there is targeting something else. You can’t always have Triple A
budget game that take forever to code and money to make. If anything it is good
they have multiples different budget title so we can continue to enjoy their
game, instead of only waiting for that mega budget game that take forever.

The 3DS is on a roll in Japan and Level 5 already have
multiples for it and this one continue in the same vein.

  • Will this join the likes of Pokemon and Digimon; a virtual fantasy creature raising/breeding game?

  • anthony apduhan

I wonder if Level 5 would make a crossover movie about Professor Layton, Inazuma Eleven, Danball Senki, Jeanne De Arc, Dark Cloud, White Knight Chronicles, Ni No Kuni, Time Travellers etc.
