How United Front Evolved The Cast Of Sleeping Dogs

By Ishaan . October 14, 2012 . 11:30am

United Front Games have shared a little insight regarding the creation of the NPCs and supporting cast that Wei Shen encounters during his undercover adventures in Sleeping Dogs. This includes early concept art for some of the game’s characters and bits and pieces of information regarding how and why they were changed for the final game. You can read the full piece here, but we’ve picked a few quotes out below:

“Pendrew changed the moment we cast Tom Wilkinson. His voice really drove that change. I don’t think we could have gotten away with the design above with that voice. You hear Tom and it just doesn’t match that design. Pendrew immediately needs to be someone commanding and who has it together.”

“Those [second and third illustrations] are designs for a character named Fifi Mao, who was dropped from the script. Fifi was an aging but famous Hong Kong Actress who was connected to the Triads. She was in the story to underscore the Triads’ connections to the Hong Kong film business. In the 80′s and 90′s the Triads were firmly entrenched in the Hong Kong film industry.”

“As we got further into the game, we started refining the look of Winston’s gang, which involve heavy tattooing. It was difficult to achieve the look of Winston’s hair that was captured in the concept and got better results when we made it darker. It became clear Mrs Chu needed to get a little tougher looking as the story began to develop, and we learn some of the things of which she’s capable.”

Sleeping Dogs is available on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

They are so right to change Pendrew’s look; I couldn’t see the voice matching that look either.

I really wanted to see more of Not Ping, I liked her a lot out.

I would never eat at a restaurant that Mrs. Chu owns. :D

The game was awesome! I hope to see more games like this, United Front.

Yeah, I couldn’t get enough of the dating missions, especially not Ping, she was pretty cute :).  At first I thought I might have missed doing something and didn’t trigger the rest of the events w/ the girls (turns out each girl only got about 1 event and that was it). So far the DLCs are just stat/item boost and random missions.. I wish they would make some story related DLCs, especially related to the girls :)  Or we might need to wait for a sequel..

Too bad there wasn’t a limited edition that comes w/ an artbook or something..

I still haven’t finished all the car races, camera hacking, and lockboxes.. kinda hard to get around… main game was shorter than I expected, but pacing was very good and sweet.. great voice acting, Tom Wilkinson sounded so menacing as Pendrew..

Yeah, I almost forgot about the fact the HK movie industry was heavily tied to the triads too (sponsors & producers).. at least back then, not sure about now..

And I thought I’m doing it wrong. Too bad there’s only one event for each of the girls. I really like to see more of ‘Not Ping’ and the European girl who worked at a bar.

Yeah, the way they left things hanging really made you think there were more to come.  I was wondering if I hack more cameras I would get to see “Not Ping” again.. and worried if I pissed off a girl by getting friendly w/ another girl.. The Russian girl running mission was cool, and later saving her from traffickers was exciting…  and Emma Stone.. she was just a cameo..

Usually I’m not huge on open world games, but Sleeping Dogs, or Red Dead Redemption, have really engrossing story and characters…

    I agree with Usagi.

Beat the game a couple weeks ago. Really underrated.
