Etrian Odyssey IV English Screenshots Show Off The New Localization Font

By Ishaan . October 18, 2012 . 1:00pm

Update: The screenshots are from an actual build of the game, not mockups. Thanks to Atlus’ Nich Maragos for clarifying.

Atlus USA have picked a new localization font for Etrian Odyssey IV and decided to show it off for fans, along with an explanation of the process they followed while narrowing down which font they wanted to use, in a recent newsletter to fans. Here’s their summary of how they settled on the Neuton font:

Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan is scheduled for release in early 2013. Take a look at more screenshots with the final font below:

  • That’s a nice font.  Really as long as it isn’t small or comic sans.

  • Nich Maragos

I think you misread the email. Those tests against white backgrounds were cropped out of the mockup screenshots we made. The full screenshots are all taken from the actual game.

    • Ah, I see. Fixed! The e-mail (and image above) says “to be sure, we made a few more mockup screens” and the screenshots were embedded right below that line, so I thought it was referring to them. Thanks for the clarification. :)

  • Syltique

Now that you mention it, it really is a good font.

  • ronin4life

Loved the demo… really want to play this.

  • British_Otaku

    I like.
I managed so far for the first game, but I approve of this.

Fonts (and the choices) aren’t appreciated enough in video games, never really thought about them till the beginning of the HD era where we had games which were near unreadable… >_>

  • DanijoEX

If only I could shake hands with Atlus for localizing such a awesome looking game…

I’m starting to have really good respect for Atlus. Cause I never did paid much any mind up until now.

Edit: I like their choice of fonts. It makes it easier for some to read.

  • IsaacGravity

Just read the e-mail newsletter of this. Gotta say, I like the font they’re going with this game. Clear & Clean.

  • As a New Media student, where fonts (and typography) are very important, I’m glad to see this sort of information being shared with us eager fans. It really makes me feel cool to understand what they’re doing and to see that skills I’m learning within my course apply to the section of the gaming industry I want to work in (localization).

As to the font itself, it is very nice and clean. It’s going to make reading the text in the game very enjoyable and easy on my eyes. Cannot wait to pick this up next year.

    • If you’re interested in getting your foot in the door of localization (not games, specifically, though), I would recommend applying to the Digital Manga Guild website! If you pass their tests and manage to find yourself a group, you’ll find yourself putting your font and typesetting knowledge to good use. :)

      • While that would be amazing, do they work on anything other than Yaoi? I’m not very interested in supporting that genre too much, but the DMG seems to be focused on it.

  • pentarou

I presume the “NEXT” is a holdover from the Japanese version.  Can it be changed?

    • $3587643

I should hope not. Quirks like that are what make these games worth playing.

    • Brandonmkii

What else would it say? It makes it perfectly clear that it’s the “next” thing to happen when you level up that skill path.

      • Pichi

I assume he meant the font. The NEXT font looks different than the rest. So perhaps changing that font to the one they are using now.

  • Captain_Jiruo

I have to say that really is a great font. Not that I usually notice fonts unless there is something wrong with them, but after seeing the first three fronts as soon as I set my eyes on the Neuton font I was “Oh ya! That’s the font.”

  • Do like. :) Although I will miss the EOIII font. It worked nicely, too.

  • Nice, so does this mean that there is also hope for 7th Dragon 2020? =P

  • font does matter! this one is very easy to read.

  • xavier axol

it’s about time we get a new etrian odyssey!, i had so much fun playing etrian odyssey III: the drowned city (it’s the only game that doesn’t turn me off been a first person view turn base game).

  • puchinri

UGH! So excited for this game! also, more money gone before I can even touch it. >u<

  • European release please ! :)

  • riceisnice

But… Why’s everyone facing to the left? Is it because their right eyes are bad? xD

    • Ronald Bixler

Well, given how they’re standing, it would be pretty awkward if they were facing their right and talking to you, wouldn’t it?

  • Yvonne Tsang

I’ve always felt that Atlus interfaces were never that appealing; fonts were usually spaced out, too big, and sometimes too thin. So now they changed it from sans-serif to serif. Minor change, but it looks quite a bit better. The font feels bolder too, which is great. I really hope they’ll fix that open quotation mark, though. I think if they shrink the font some more while keeping the textbox padding it would look even better.

  • Shane Guidaboni

The font in the first EO was terrible.

    • Ferofax

It had to be legible but small enough to fit many characters in, hence a monospaced font. Remember, the DS only has so much pixel width to go around. The 3DS is better in that regard. Not by much, but enough to make a significant difference.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

It is always nice that company actually pay attention to some minor things like Fonts and the sizes there as there are some games like Neptunia or Atelier which had quite small font almost making my eyes bleed everytime i play the game.T_T

    • Manny Being Manny

Do you have a SDTV? Since I never had any issues with the font size on my HDTV.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Yeah. When i played those two games outside of my homeland, i use SDTV.T_T Which makes my eye hurts there.

But i think most of Nisa game even Ar Tonelico 3 also had the same problem in HDTV there.

  • Folk Hellfang

I’m glad that EO has found success here in the West, such that we have had localized versions of every title in the series. I’m a proud day one buyer and fan of every game in the series so far. I’ve only finished 1 and 3 so far, just lost steam on two, but I am ready for 4!
Thanks Atlus, for looking out for your fans, and thanks EO fans for supporting these great games!

  • Ferofax

Wow, they certainly look shopped! A bit jarring and somehow out of place, but it does make walls of text look prettier and gives it that “bookish” feel…

My inner bookworm likes it already.
