Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate’s Online Multiplayer Is Free

By Spencer . October 25, 2012 . 5:05am

monhMonster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto stopped by Nintendo Direct to talk about Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. The Wii U version has a customizable interface like the 3DS version on the Wii U’s touch screen. You can also play Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate with the Wii U Pro Controller.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for Wii U has HD graphics and free online play. While Capcom didn’t charge for online play in the West, Monster Hunter Tri players in Japan had to pay a monthly fee to log online.

  • that is a very good thing

I wonder if the number of MH3 subscriptors wasn’t high enough to convince them to keep the online-pay model.

    • Peace Legacy

In Japan, MH is a big thing, so people wouldn’t mind paying money for it
In the West, it is still a weak franchise, and potential newcomer would be turned off from the game if they had to pay money just to play online

      • malek86

True, but if I’m getting the article right, MH3U is gonna be free to play even in Japan. So I was wondering if maybe there weren’t enough MH3 paying players.

Or maybe it’s just that Nintendo is paying with their money to entice more players to buy it. I guess MH4 could be free too.

I see that being a possibility. MH3U is going to be an early Wii U game, and I’d imagine that Nintendo wants the game to have as few bumps in the road as possible. Making this game free helps to increase the number of people that would be willing to buy it, and in extension, willing to buy a Wii U.

      •  Tell me more about Japan.

        • Peace Legacy

It is a first world country from the East, with the majority of their citizen speaking Japanese.
Hope I am not giving out too obscure info, I would hate to back these up with sources

LOLOLOL.^_^ You forget the fact where Japan is one of the few countries where Arcade is still alive and banging.^_^

    • The primary difference is that Tri ran on Capcom servers while 3U will run on Nintendo servers. That—and the fact that this is an HD update like Portable 3rd—is why it isn’t pay-to-play for online.

MH4 sounds like online will be free as well (or if it isn’t, they haven’t specified this so far). That makes sense anyway, since I don’t think anyone would make a pay-to-play portable game, but I’m sure they’re figuring out ways to monetize it through DLC and stuff.

With MH3 support and this support, Nintendo really become good partner for capcom. MH sells nintendo console and Nintendo help MH sells. No wonder capcom betray sony

  • Curan_Altea

I assume this is because Nintendo is supplementing the online service (unless I’m crazy and remembering wrong.)

  • RaikageV

    ACTUALLY I didn’t thought it wouldn’t be free…
Buuut, I guess that are good news ^^

  •  Ooh, I thought this was already confirmed long ago…

  • Spider-Man

I don’t see why it wouldn’t be free in the West.

  • puchinri

Yay~! I’m so excited! I need to try and save up for a Wii U for then. ♥

  • Just Tim

    I wouldn’t mind a round 2 with #MonsterHunter. :3

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Nice news even though i thought this is already confirmed before? After all, Japanese is always the one who is getting the bad end stick lol.^_^
