gta5Grand Theft Auto V is slated for release in Spring 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Rockstar Games announced this morning.

Developed by the series’ creator, the Rockstar North studio, Grand Theft Auto V will take place in a re-imagined Southern California, in a locale called Los Santos. Rockstar say this is the largest world they’ve created to date.

In case you missed it, you can watch an early trailer for Grand Theft Auto V here.

  • Interesting that there is no Wii U release planned, especially given the rumors that Rockstar was already involved in development for the system.

At any rate, it’d be terrific if they could ditch GTA4’s troublingly inconsistent attempt at a “serious” plot and aesthetic and go back to the nihilistic wackiness of the earlier games.

Oddly, I’ve read on a couple sites the exact opposite about them with Wii U development. That they are taking a wait and see approach to it, because they are not sure it’s going to be right for them.

    • DesmaX

Well, going back to San Andreas would imply that.

But, I dunno… I prefer the more serious tone for V (Especially after playing Red Dead Redemption). Just Cause 2 and Saint’s Row 3 are already wacky enough

Sales wise it is probably not even beneficial to them to even bring it to Wii U. It will still no doubt, be the best selling console game not named Modern Warfare 4 of 2013, dattebayo.

It would be weird to see GTA5 released on Wii U so soon after the system comes out. I guess they haven’t worked on it at this point, and it would be especially difficult to do such an extensive game. Maybe the Wii U might get a port later on.

    • Bloodios

I can see Rockstar switching Agent to a multiplatform title and the Wii U version will be one of the many.

  • Where the hell is my PC version o_O?

Can’t wait to play this game and cause all hell of problems to everything and everyone in Los Santos again, yayyy xD

  • Learii

i  hope i  can chand  controller to classic like GTA 4

  • Back to Los Santos, eh? Hopefully the game will be more interesting than GTA IV was. I can’t say exactly why but that game never managed to peak my interest, while the previous GTA games always did before.

    • Solomon_Kano

Same. For my money GTA IV lacked that same sense of fun that the previous games had. The series was never Saints Row crazy and GTA IV wasn’t exactly Max Payne serious, but it felt like they toned it down. Or maybe I was bored of being in Liberty City again. I dunno, I can’t really put my finger on it.

      •  I think you said it. The game just wasn’t as fun to play, it was kinda boring, compared to the previous entries. It did seem they were trying to make the game more serious somehow, and I think that did put me off.

Despite how slightly too much over the top Saint’s Row 3 was compared to the more even handed Saint’s Row 2 that had a beautiful mixture of the wacky and obscenely insane with the dramatic and serious tones, I still heavily enjoyed Saint’s Row 3…

And obviously the reason I state that game is because. I lost all interest in GTA a while back and GTA4 certainly didn’t help.

I’ll be waiting for the announcement of Saint’s Row 4 or some extremely good reviews of GTA5. We’ll see.

Apparently the cancelled DLC for Saints Row 3 was cancelled because it was so good they wanted to build it into Saints Row 4.

  • Shadowman

    You will have my money.

I’m not sure whether or not to be concerned over the fact that there is no mention of a PC version (yet). It is possible that, after the disaster that was the GTA IV port, they want to take their time to do it right this time around. Then again, they never released Red Dead Redemption on PC…

Putting that aside, I hope the series will go back to the silly, over-the-top tone that most of the games in the series had. While I have nothing against “realism”, it doesn’t really add anything to the GTA experience. A lot of entertainment value from GTA games was derived precisely from the fact that we could do some crazy, non-sensical stunts.

Also, while I’m probably one of the few that feels this way, I’m a little disappointed about the setting. Don’t get me wrong, Los Santos isn’t a bad setting by any means. But I was kind of hoping we would see a non-US locale for a change. If they had to revisit an old location, I would have prefered London (especially since the developers hail from the nearby Scotland). But oh well, it’s not the end of the world or anything.

      Rejected GTA Titles:

      Grand Theft Auto: Saskatchewan
      Grand Theft Auto: Silesia
      Grand Theft Auto: Western Australia

  • Yvonne Strahovski.
Please let us do crazy stuff like San Andreas, flying with jetpack, killing people, more humor and most importantly ditch that lousy control of GTA IV.

  • and that must be the ugliest western art i’ve seen recent years..

PC release date = 6-7 months after the initial console release.
