Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition Coming To PC, iPad And Mac This Month

Classic PC role-playing game, Baldur’s Gate, is getting a second lease on life with Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition for PC, iPad and Andoid tablets. This updated version of the game comes with new characters, a new quest, and will also include the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion pack.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is developed on an improved version of the Infinity Engine optimized for tablets. The original Infinity Engine was used by Bioware to develop games like Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale, but Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is being developed by a studio named Overhaul Games, with ex-Bioware employees working on the project.

The enhancements you’ll find in Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition include:

  • New Adventure: The Black Pits
  • New Character: Rasaad yn Bashir
  • New Character: Dorn Il-Khan as an in-app purchase
  • New Character: Neera the Wild Mage as an in-app purchase
  • New Player Voice sets as an in-app purchase
  • New Player Portraits as an in-app purchase
  • Gamecenter Support to track friends and invite them to play with you

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition will be released for the PC, Mac OS X and iPad on November 28th. The PC and Mac versions will cost $20, while the iPad version will cost $10. An Android release is also planned but a release date hasn’t been announced.

    Seriously considering buying this!

Wait… in-app purchase for portrait’s and voices? Cool but… did they limit on what we can do with our own portraits and voices?

  • Jirin

I remember when RPGs gave you full control of the party.  *sigh*  Back when game companies knew that RPG strategy meant deciding the actions for the entire party, not just your lead.  Maybe I’ll get this.

EE also squashes a metric tonne of bugs, updates visuals, allows one to zoom in on the action, adds the various races and classes from BG2, introduces a new class, has all new cinematics, and the devs have promised ongoing support and content. The new characters are romanceable as well.

    • Göran Isacson

Interesting. I’ve heard that Baldurs gate has received extensive mods, as well as some kind of mods that are in fact cut content that was edited back in (not sure if that was correct or just a rumor though). Maybe we’ll see some of that content in this package?

  • Göran Isacson

Have to admit that I find it intriguing that these characters will be written by “new” Bioware, and how they will mix and mingle with the “old” Bioware-style. While I wonder if any of the newcomers will be as memorable as Minsc or Jan, well… one can always hope.

    • Hraesvelgr

Technically, BioWare has nothing to do with this.

      • Göran Isacson

Ah, as I read the article closer I see that important “ex-Bioware employees” word… now I’m curious if the ex-employees are writers, code monkeys or maybe both. Still curious as to how these characters will pan out though.

I never, NEVER buy games for my PC but, being fan of the Forgotten Realms books and having heard nothing but good about this game for years, I’m tempted to get this.

Now if only somebody would do something with the two Dark Alliance games so I could play those. A PSN re-release would be lovely, though that’s doubtful.

    • Derek E Nay

When I first played Dark Alliance I hated it. Only because I wanted a rpg like the pc versions. Though, over time I grew to like them.

    •  Baldurs Gate is an amazing series from start to finish. If you ever get a chance, try out the second one, even standing on it’s own it’s a fantastic example of what storytelling RPGs in this day and age sorely miss.

      • Solomon_Kano

I read that they’re working on an Enhanced Edition of the second one after this is out, so I’ll likely grab that as well.

  • Setsu Oh

……that isn t what i wanted….i ll buy that, too bad i don t think it will be in any other form than digital…
that is the kind of game i buy retail…..
with dungeo seige 3, i though we would have a game more in 3d…..and for all consoles too.
pffffff. i hope the sales of that title will push them to make a console version.

  • Heard good things about this. Will have to look into the Mac version.
