Team Ninja Want Player Feedback For Dead or Alive 5 Balance Changes

By Ishaan . November 4, 2012 . 10:30am

Team Ninja are in the process of rebalancing Dead or Alive 5, the studio recently announced via their Twitter feed. Dead or Alive 5 director, Yohei Shimbori, took the opportunity to address fans of the fighting game that have been playing it.

“As I mentioned last week, I’d like to explain the direction for balancing things moving forward,” Shimbori wrote via Twitter. “Please keep in mind that we’re still considering what exactly to update, but this should give you an idea how we’re thinking.”

Shimbori elaborated: “Direction 1: As a rule, we are not going to do anything that makes all of your practice up to now pointless. We will only tweak things we feel are absolutely necessary.”

“Direction 2: We will balance aspects we feel are not fair,” he continued. “Moves that are way too strong or which have strange motion, etc. Bug fixes are included in this consideration.”

“Direction 3: We will not change the concept and importance of keeping each character’s individuality. Rather than kill personality to make everyone the same, we’ll strengthen the weak characters to make a fair fight.”

And finally: “Direction 4: I will tweet questions about certain aspects to get your feedback. We will consider your responses carefully when we make our final decisions. Please use the hashtag #DOA5_balance so we can keep track easily.”

The content and timing of the eventual update hasn’t been decided upon yet, but Shimbori says Team Ninja will let fans know once those details have been ironed out. In the meantime, Shimbori encourages Dead or Alive 5 players to get talking with each other, discuss what they’d like to see changed, and then answer Team Ninja’s ongoing queries with their opinions.

The only thing off the top of my head that should probably be changed is that they should make 2P an ex-low (it will crush highs, but doesn’t actually hit low… so… more like Virtua Fighter, lol).

You don’t get frame advantage (except for certain characters?) off of 2P on normal hit, but it’s still kind of annoying to have a low that’s even on hit that hits that fast since most mids don’t start as fast as 2P.

Though, I guess people could always block 2P (which will probably have negative frames, allowing them to push a button after), but I’d prefer not to have to open myself to mids just because I guessed that the opponent might do 2P.

(some mids are like… 2 frames slower than 2P, so that’s kind of a ridiculous mixup… and the game already has some pretty brutal mixups because of how stun works since you’re forced to guess during too many situations, even if you do know how to slow escape, which I may have stopped doing because I’m lazy)

But then, I don’t know. Just do whatever.

    Give me more free costumes.

  • Good balancing could have started with not having Alpha as an unlockable character. So sick of the rare occurrences I go online and always ending up in a room full of Alpha players just spamming their way to victories. Its good practice admittedly, but she shouldn’t have been there to start with.

    • DKL

Spamming sort of works in this game (especially if your main competition is online, which hasn’t been great), but I think at decent level play, it doesn’t really work since the long strings tend to be very negative on block…

So, I guess… people should learn the strings and how to block them; it sinks in after time.

But then, I haven’t actually looked at Alpha’s frame data; she could be stupid busted, but I wouldn’t know.

(can’t possibly be as bad as the VF characters, who maintain most of their frame data from VF… it’s pretty funny… Akira is probably one of the harder characters to use in the game, but he’s really easy for me to use compared to his VF counterpart)

Even though the few tournaments that have tried to get some people interested in DoA 5 are lucky if they get double digits for entrants, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone play Alpha.  I’m fairly sure no characters are banned, however if there was someone out their maining Alpha they’d probably annoy people running the tournament not having the characters unlocked on all their systems. ;p

If there’s someone considered top tier it’s probably Jahn Lee, but unfortunately the game just doesn’t get a lot of competitive play.  It’s really hard to say who the best character is in a game no one plays.

      •  I wasn’t bothered by them when I heard they would be in it. Thought it would be a nice touch. But now playing as them and fighting against them I feel they break the flow of the game with their awkward frames. As characters they kind of fit, but as playable characters I feel they should have been reworked from the start to fit in the game.

I’d love to have team ninja have a player feedback on ninja gaiden 3 for ps3/xbox and fix that

    • drproton

       It’s called Razor’s Edge.

      • MrTyrant

        And it’s wii-u only. Sorry ps3/360 players.

      • Closet_Ninja

umm yeah i kinda know that, its just bs for everbody who bought NG3 and not razors edge

  • Romangelo

I don’t think this game needs a rebalance.

even though I hate Brad Wong and his fighting style.

  • MrTyrant

They should take some feedback about the costumes too.

Nothing comes to mind but I don’t really play DoA5 at high level (yet). Doesn’t feel too unbalanced to me (yet).

  • kylehyde

So DOA 5: Razor’s Edge for Wii U confirmed?

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

They are not Capcom though who released UMvC in a year.^_^

After 50+ spent in DOA5 I don’t think anything is wrong with any of the characters or they need to be re-balanced. I’m yet to see Alpha, but not like I care about her.

Some fans will never be fully satisfied anyway.

    • MrTyrant

I want Alpha with some costumes too, she is sooo sexy hahahaha

  • z_merquise

    . . . sexy swimsuits.

And for the guys too. That would make things balanced

  • Nitraion

    Low Costume budget balance? XD

  • Göran Isacson

I am not that far into the game and can’t really say anything about character balance, but what I WOULD do is that I would make the training mode do what Tekken does, and let the player know when they’ve landed a high blow or a mid blow. Tekken does it via a colored blob at the impact point of an attack, and while that may be too sparkly for DOA I still wish they would give me some indication as if my attack is high or mid- I am having one HECK of a time differentiating those two and it’s not making learning how to hold any easier.

    • DKL

DOA5 has the best training mode out of all the 3D fighting games (it’s actually better than VF5’s, which was very surprising); they’re not quite the hit sparks in Tekken, but the in-game data provides far more insight than Tekken’s training mode does by a long shot.

(the game does tell you the property of every strike in an attack string, so holding attacks shouldn’t be an issue if someone plays enough training mode)

Tekken, in addition to not giving you the frame data, doesn’t even tell you which way a move tracks (which is very important in that game)…

Don’t even get me started on DOA5’s wealth of training mode options… all the tools people need to get better are in the box, which other studios could stand to learn from.

      • Göran Isacson

Then I would very much like to know what to look at, because I’m just not seeing that. Maybe it’s just going too fast for me and I’m not looking at the right place, but I’ve yet to discover anything on the screen which tells me what properties a blow has. Then again I have the “command list” up that shows the little button-strings for the various combos instead of that other option, could that be why I’m not seeing anything?

        • DKL

I can’t remember specifically, but I think it was called “Fight Info” or something in the pause menu: the box that appears in the bottom middle of the screen gives you every thing you need to know about everything.

Short of displaying hitboxes, there’s not much you can do to improve past what DOA5 has to offer in terms of information.
