“I’m In Perfect Health,” Says Yasumi Matsuno To Fans

By Ishaan . November 9, 2012 . 4:00pm

Earlier in the week, Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics creator, Yasumi Matsuno, announced that he has parted ways with Level 5, the company he joined in June 2011. Level 5 are behind the Professor Layton games and the only title Matsuno worked on for them is a Nintendo eShop RPG for the 3DS, titled Crimson Shroud.

Years prior to joining Level 5, Matsuno was employed at Square Enix, but left the company during the development of Final Fantasy XII, of which he was the director.

At the time, a statement released by Square Enix said that Matsuno had left due to health concerns, as he had been ill for some time. Just what was wrong with Matsuno was never publicly shared, and his roles on the project were spread across various other Square Enix employees.

This week, Matsuno stated over Twitter: “I’d like to formally announce my departure from Level-5, effective last month. With my work done on the domestic and overseas version of my latest 3DSWare game, it was good timing for me to step down and take a short break in order to recharge for my next project.”

A day later, presumably after receiving messages from curious fans regarding his health, Matsuno tweeted to followers: “To concerned friends: I’m happy to report I’m in perfect health. Just taking a little time to recharge before my next project! thx. :)”

Food for thought:

Quite a few people aren’t aware of this to date, but Yasumi Matsuno also helped out on the story for MadWorld on the Wii, developed by PlatinumGames.

Well whatever ailed him in the past  I think given that he realy should take breaks between  game releases. Its probably healthier for him all the way arround and will keep him in good creative spirits longer. Stress alone can cause some pretty ugly things to happen and destressing is always a good thing.

I was kind of thinking if he could work again with Platinum Games someday.

I would really like to see Matsuno work with them in an action-RPG with him as the director. That would be pretty cool.

I’m glad to hear he’s healthy, and it sounds reasonable to rest (recharge) before working on another project. I wonder if he has ideas already, or if he’s just going to kick back? Happy resting to him, either way~.

I think it’s time to start his new studio, Quest 2.

In all seriousness, I hope his next RPG project is something of grander scale than Crimson Shroud–and, of course, turn-based.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Hmmm i see Matsuno here as a creative and good game developers however had a problem in finding a good working environment that suited his styles.

Hope he will be able to recharge himself and find a good company to join with. I would love if he join Konami and tries to bring back Suikoden there lol.^_^

Definitely working on Vagrant Story,  FF Tactics sequels and touching up on FF Type series RTS battles, with Tactics Ogre as a bonus.

Well, God to know that SOMEONE in the Japanese games industry is thinking of his health. Him and Ono should go to Hawaii, just relax for a couple of weeks or so.

  • My god, that’s the first time I’ve ever seen Matsuno’s face.

    He looks sweaty.

  • baha

would have been funnier if he said he died .-.

  • Solomon_Kano

Thank goodness. Had no idea about that MadWorld bit. That’s pretty cool. I’ll have to pick that up once I get my Wii U since I missed it.

    • he was one of the story writer of Madworld,  not much activity in game industry after he leaving SE

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I noticed that he hasn’t done much post-FFXII.

  • i know a lot of fans(including me)hoping for Tactics Ogre,FFT Or Vagrant Story kind of game but i get feel he was uncomfortable with those expectations and who knows we might end up getting Love plus ish game from him since he was big fan of love plus

    • Adam_Rodriguez

It isn’t expecations he needs to worry about, but having such enjoyable battlesystems. Disgaia improved over the FFT formula, he needs to improve upon and not be shy of his fantastic accomplishments.

  • tha_Chiller

just get the Quest team back & start a indie company…we need you man
