Siliconera’s New Mobile Site Is Up

By Ishaan . November 24, 2012 . 4:00pm

As a few of our readers have probably experienced, we’ve had issues with our mobile site before, and this is something we’ve been working on addressing this year. We’re happy to announce that the mobile version of Siliconera we’ll be using for the foreseeable future is up and running, and you can access it at:

On tablets, you can swipe up and down to view articles. When you’re reading a particular article, you can swipe left and right as if you’re reading a magazine. If you want to comment, you can do that by tapping the “…” bubble.

The phone version of the site is still undergoing final testing but you can access it from the URL. Integrating the comments took quite a bit of effort, but we wanted people to be able to comment from their phones/tablets and did manage to find a workable solution. Commenting is supported by taking users back to the original mobile site.

Additionally, with regard to Disqus, some of our users reported recently that they’ve been having trouble logging into Disqus using their Facebook accounts. Spencer managed to figure out what was causing the glitch, and we’re happy to report that this issue has been resolved as well.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I can’t seem to access the normal site or mobile version from my Vita. Is this normal?

    • Naninho Carioca

Neither do I. So yes, it seems to be normal.

    • For the people that want to view the site on Vita, the issue should be fixed now. You’ll see the desktop version of Siliconera.

      • Zonron

i just tried again, its still looping back to mobile, then back to normal. it seems to loop faster now :

ill try resetting my vita to see if that changes things

        • benhofb

Nah, I have reset my vita, cleared cookies, and wiped history and settings. Still on an infinite loop between regular siliconera and a blank page.

          • A little baffled by this because the site is working fine on my Vita?

          • The main site loads now, but every time I try to post with Discus, it reloads again. And at random, the web browser crashes.

          • benhofb

Aha! I just tried it again and now it works. For awhile there I was getting those loops people were talking about between the mobile site and the full site. Works great now. I haven’t tested the Disquis stuff yet, but everything else is fine for me.

        • Seems to work OK on my Vita? Is it still not working?

          • Zonron

            works great now thanks

      • The site load is still messed up for the Vita version. But I’m sure you already know that.

  • Hoshi星

It works very well on my iPod Touch…but it still doesn’t work properly on the browser of my Vita. It keeps switching between the mobile site and the original site constantly.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

Well that’s been happening to me even before this article was posted. Just wanted to know if I was the only one having the problem.

P.S Do you have Ys Foliage Ocean in Celceta?

      • Hoshi星

Yes, it started happening when Siliconera changed the new format/mobile site for mobile device I guess? Before that it was still working perfectl very well with the non-mobile version.

And yes, I do have Ys Celceta. I’m on my 2nd playthrough in Nightmare mode trying to get the rest of the trophies.

    • The good news is we (well, me because we have a tech staff of 1) addressed the issue. The Vita version loads the desktop site now.

      • Kayseur

I still can’t access it here. It still keeps going back and forth through the two versions… Am I the only one ?

  • Sweet, sometimes I go here on my Android.

  • Jose Juan Muñoz Moreno

Sorry is not visible on opera  browser on iphone 3gs. :-(

  • neogeno

Glad you guys decided to give it an upgrade.

  • JMaster3000

    Can’t be viewed on 3DS >.>

    • kylehyde

:( same here, guess i will continue to use my phone

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      same ;/

  • AzuNo17

There’s basically two versions for a smartphone correct? I’m not a fan of the current phone version that uses a blown up picture per article, but I use the other mobile version that is similar to your desktop Siliconera on my iPhone. Problem with the one I use is that the red “Load more articles” button doesn’t work, so I wouldn’t be able to load up anything except maybe the 10 most recent articles.

I’m assuming the first two images here are the version that fixes that. I’d rather not use the bottom two.

  • Maia Kasoya

Oh, it’s great to know these mobile problems are being taken care of.
I’ve been using the mobile site on my iPod for a while until July/August (which was when problems started showing up for me), so I started using the full site instead on the computer.

  • kylehyde

Lets see how it work on android.

Edit: well it doesn’t look too different (basically it looks the same) but at least i can see now the older stories.

    • Did you go to That’s where the new mobile site is. Right now directs to the old mobile site.

      • kylehyde

yep, but I will try with another browser later, I used doplhin since Opera didn’t let me post with disqus on the old version but I will try downloading opera and check it later.

Edit: Nop, same result, and still opera doesn’t recognize disqus, but this happen on every site with disqus, for that reason I changed to dolphin (Also certain NSFW site didn’t work very well on opera).

        • Ah, I see you’re using Opera. OK we’ll give this a look. Thanks for the heads up.

  • This is great! Thanks, Siliconera!

  • yesss

  • Me gusta!

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Great to here. Sorry to say but the old one was pretty bad, hah. It was really unresponsive. Good to hear about this though.

    • Aoshi00

Yeah, I’m using my Samsung Galaxy S2 android phone, before I could only view the latest articles and the “load more entries” btn didn’t work, now the “next” btn at the bottom seems to work :)  I thought it was my phone or something..

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

Ah cool! I thought it was just my bad luck that “load more entries” never actually worked.

        • It works on the mobile site now. The main culprit for it not working earlier was Disqus incompatibility, but we wanted people to be able to comment on the go, so it became a catch 22.

          • Barrylocke89

I’m a little surprised that the company that operates Disqus doesn’t have more mobile compatibility for their commenting service, as popular as it seems to be. It’s more than just gaming/entertainment sites that utilize the service; a lot of general news sites (such as use Disqus for comment posting and such.

  • Lazulis

Whoot! The mobile version  seems to work fine on my android…

  • Solomon_Kano

Looks pretty sweet, but it’s not showing up on my phone. Just got a new one, but I’m still getting the old mobile site :(

    • Did you try going to The iPhone/Android phone site still needs a little tweaking.

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea. It still just takes me to the old mobile site.

        • Are you using Opera by any chance?

          • Solomon_Kano

Nah, I’m using the stock Android browser.

          • Interesting… I see we need to run more tests with Android then. Thanks for the heads up :)

          • NaelAM

Yeah, I’m getting redirected to the full desktop site when trying to go to the mobile site with Firefox for Android here.

          • Solomon_Kano

@Siliconera15:disqus No prob. In case it helps any, I’m running Android 4.2.

  • Mnstrzero00

Is there a way to use the normal version of the site? Its just a mess on my ipad with it crashing and I see more stories when I visit the site on a pc (but that was a while ago, might’ve fixed that). And I cant save images or comment without going back to the previous mobile version which just seems ridiculous because the previous version worked better.

  • ResidentMetroid

I don’t like the new mobile site :/

  • EtherealEarth

Now I can read Siliconera while I am in the toilet! Awesome!

    • PreyMantis

Wow… That’s… Not to be a jerk, but it sounds like you have an old device when you said that you’ll finally be able to read on the site. It’s weird…

      • EtherealEarth

Ha, not that old, but I did indeed have a difficult time accessing siliconera from my mobile.

But I suppose it was more of my phone’s connection than the website itself :/

  • Awww yeah, finally! I do check out the website rather often on my tablet and on my ipod, depending on where I am, and I’ve definitely experienced some problems while doing so. So I’m glad to see these issues are being adress.

Do keep up the good work, please.

  • Go2hell66

eh i thought it changed a while ago? or did you change it again? either way looks great

just hope you find a more elegant solution for posting comments on mobile devices in the future

  • DarkWaterClone

Is there any way to use the PC one instead? I prefer using the old look more. I was finally getting use to the mobile site on my iPad then it was changed again. So is there any way to use the PC one or to keep using the old mobile site?

    • Curan_Altea

Not the most convenient solution, but you should be able to set the website preference under your browsers settings.

      • DarkWaterClone

        Thanks for the tip.

  • Peace Legacy

Locked single page scrolling is extremely limited and annoying, especially on tablet devices where you can just instead simply see all the text in one place like a normal desktop base computer.
Needing to open a separate page for commenting is also plain annoying.
…and still no Facebook commenting integration yet?

    • Facebook commenting has been fixed. We announced it in the Open Thread.

      • Peace Legacy

I am talking about the mobile site, it still does not allow Facebook integration as far as I can check

        • Our commenting platform, like the core site uses Disqus which supports logging in via Facebook.

          • Peace Legacy

Uh… on the core site, when you want to log in to the DISQUS platform, there is a scroll down list with different logging in methods, including standard Disqus account and Facebook account login.
Whereas in the mobile siliconera Disqus, the ONLY scroll down option available is DISQUS standard account log in (only log in method available… and I’ve already tried using facebook credential to log in through the DISQUS platform on mobile, it does not work

          • The reason for this is simple Disqus Classic’s mobile site isn’t compatible with Facebook.

And when we switched to Disqus 2012 pretty much everyone complained so due to reader demand we reverted back to Classic Disqus.

  • This mobile page is the reason why I can’t access this site with my vita anymore. It gets caught in a loop going between the two versions of the site.

    • Zonron

same thing as me! just now realized you posted that below me.

    • It’s actually the backwards compatibility that’s causing the issue. We left in the old mobile site for people that prefer it, but apparently the Vita can’t discern between the two like mobile phones can.

      • Hey thanks for that Spencer.

    • For the people that want to view the site on Vita, the issue should be fixed now. You’ll see the desktop version of Siliconera.

  • Zonron

as of recent i have not been able to view your website at all on my vita. it flips the heck out and rapidly goes from siliconera to the mobile siliconera. is anyone else having this error?

    • The good news is you shouldn’t get that error anymore. People reading Siliconera on Vita will see the original site.

  • Tenno Seremel

Maybe you shouldn’t redirect automatically to/from mobile. Just add links and users will choose what they want.

    • You realize there is a link back to the desktop site, right?

      • Tenno Seremel

Well, the first part still stands. It doesn’t help me if I get automatically redirected from the mobile/normal view to the other one.

  • badmoogle

I’ll check it tonight from my PSP.

  • Rei

Wish there was no fix scrolling, everything else is great.

  • My phone for some reason couldn’t access the mobile site as it was blank when the loading complete. Also why I can’t log in via FB on my phone?

  • Chaheezor

I’m using google chrome on my samsung galaxy tab 2 and for some reason it won’t work. I use the link and it starts loading but takes be right back to either the desktop site or the old mobile site.

  • I’d also like to address that your site’s come up with malicious URL warnings with Avast! and anti-viruses like it MULTIPLE times over the last year or two. The most recent dealt with a malicious URL tracing back to hitcounter. I mean I have NoScript and ABP enabled on my main computer so it doesn’t affect me but I would imagine that there may be problems with people that aren’t so secure.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    awesome :3

  • Android 2.3 user here, but the mobile site just doesn’t want to load even if I directly type “”. It redirects me to the desktop site. Tried with different browsers and I’m still getting the desktop site.

    • Maybe you encountered what Spencer meant for PS Vita users.

    • kylehyde

Same here in any of my browsers (default, opera, dolphin) it redirects me to the desktop site.

      • Yup yup! My HTC browser and Dolphin redirects me to the desktop site. It still loads, but I prefer a lightweight solution to conserve data :x

    • Yeah, that’s due to Vita incompatibility. At the bottom of the desktop site you should see an option to pick the lightweight version.

  • Doesn’t work on my 3DS XL.

    • We never said the site was 3DS XL compatible. It’s for phones and tablets.

      • It was just a comment :C I disagree with the phillosophy on tablets and smartphones so I only had the 3DS to try it, and it didn’t work, wish you guys had a mobile version for it, as I constantly use the nintendo life and GoNintendo ones on it between some gameplay when my eyes get tired from the 3D :C.

        • I can’t think of that many sites that are 3DS optimized and support commenting. The old mobile site wasn’t 3DS compatible either since we weren’t able to get it to run on 3DS with commenting enabled so we had to go with the Desktop site.

          • There is a list on GBATemp with the mobile sites for 3DS Browser, but it is true that I didn’t saw any site with a board like the one in SiliconEra Disqus, they are very simplified version of their parent ones, with just text in many times, but still I think it would be great to read your news and posts between some gameplay.

    Doesn’t work with Windows Phone

  • disqus_thdNkY8dJX

I always get a blank page when I try to access the mobile site with my Blackberry. Is this normal?
