Hideo Kojima To Introduce Concepts For New Games Using Metal Gear

By Ishaan . November 29, 2012 . 2:20pm

Hideo Kojima often says that he’d like to work on games that aren’t Metal Gear Solid, but inevitably ends up working on more Metal Gear games anyway. However, Kojima says to EGM, there is a definite upside to this.

“I’m often misinterpreted,” Kojima feels. “I’ve always said that I want to work on original properties, but Metal Gear offers plenty of benefits. The Fox Engine, for example, took a lot of time and money [to create]; we were only able to develop it because it was intended for the next Metal Gear.”

Kojima also adds: “In the next game, I’m introducing concepts intended for entirely new intellectual properties using the Metal Gear brand.”

Whether or not this “next game” that Kojima is referring to is Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes or another title is unknown. Kojima is working on a non-Metal Gear project, too, though—Project Ogre, which also uses the Fox Engine.

Is the FOX engine exclusive to Metal Gear only?

    • Read the full article. :P

Project Ogre uses Fox Engine, too. Additionally, the new Zone of the Enders game will also be using Fox.

      • Solomon_Kano

I also recall Konami mentioning it being used for a future Winning Eleven game, and Kojima’s said that’s it’s available for the whole company to use.

        • Ah, that’s right… Konami did mention that it would be used for Pro Evo! So it’s basically a company-wide engine at this point, yeah.

    • Tianyu Wei

no. it’s just a graphics/physics engine. Like SqureEnix’s Luminous engine.

  • SirRichard

It’s a nice advantage, I suppose; they can test gameplay concepts and ideas and gauge how much people like them while still not banking on a new IP just yet, letting them get it right before using it elsewhere.

Though odds are those new IPs will end up getting drowned by Metal Gear anyway.

Make some new HD Boktai games (We got the Solar Gun in MGS4, and that was fun to play with), and I’d have to find a way to love you more than I already do Kojima. Of course every game I’ve played that Kojima is behind always turns out to be good.

    • Robert Leonardi

i don’t think KojiPro can do that, because boktai wasn’t part of KojiPro and was included in their games as a cameo only

      • Solomon_Kano

As a part of Konami and with Kojima having been the producer on the Boktai series, I’m sure KojiPro would be able to do a new Boktai if they wanted it. The only thing barring it would be Konami deeming it unprofitable. That aside, there’s nothing in the way.

        • Robert Leonardi

oh yeah! totally forgot that KojiPro IS the producer for boktai, well in my defense, i haven’t played it for a very long time XD, so i don’t really remember XD

as for boktai, i don’t think it has enough player base for KojiPro to continue making more for it

“In the next game, I’m introducing concepts intended for entirely new intellectual properties using the Metal Gear brand.

    What does this mean exactly?

I remember Kojima mentioning that he’s interested for a new Silent Hill game running in Fox Engine. I hope they can use it more to their games that aren’t just Metal Gear.

But I would really love to see a new 2D Contra game using this engine. 2D run-and-gun games needs more love and attention.

    • Solomon_Kano

He’s using the Metal Gear brand, specifically in Ground Zeroes, to experiment with concepts that he’ll be exploring in a wholly new IP down the line.

As for Contra, it would be incredible to see it running on Fox. Konami had that teaser a while back and never brought Contra up again, so we’ll see what happens with that. I really hope that’s still in the works.

  • Solomon_Kano

I had considered he might do something like that. It seems like a good way to test the waters. Use a sure-shot brand to try out things you want to use beyond it later, so when it shows up in the product it was intended for you’ll already have made improvements to it based on prior feedback.

I’m more excited than should be possible for Ground Zeroes, but knowing that ZOE3 and Project Ogre are still waiting in the wings is a tantalizing thought.

  • KingGunblader

I could be 100% off-base, but if you ask me this is just Kojima saying “I’m going to make something that’s not Metal Gear I SWEAR.” And we all chuckle good-naturely and pat him on the head as he works away on Ground Zeroes, which by the way I am VERY excited for.

  • Juliano C

I have high hopes fo MGS4, but I hope that Kojima will go back being his awesome old self, IMO his games after ZOE2 were lacking…

    • Solomon_Kano

MGS4 came out some time ago…

      • Juliano C

lol, my bad, I meant MGS:GZ, MGS4 was so bland that I´ve forgotten about it

  • Huh. That’s actually pretty clever. Sounds like he’s sort of taking a page out of Nintendo’s playbook – that is, using the security of established brands to experiment with a wide variety of new mechanics.

  • I just want a Zone of the Enders….Stop teasing me soo much Kojima-san T___T

    • neocatzon

well, you know they are working in ZOE3 and using FOX engine right?

      • You mean that Enders Project ? Yeah, I saw it and I was stunned at Shinkawas Artwork, just as usual. But there hasn’t been any kind of further information concerning that game. I just hope that we will get to see anything beyond artwork in the upcoming year :)

  • Helepythia

RPG Shooter or Sandbox, please. I’m sure Koji-Pro can make a great story with anything they do.

  • judging from the demo he showed for Ground Zero, it seems this game has the potential to break some new grounds. i just hope that people will be open to it

  • Nitraion

I waiting your game always……especially this Ground zero the trailer make me want it…

  • I don’t know if it’s the paycheck or if he just doesn’t want someone else to lead it, but Kojima will NEVER leave MGS and will always be known as the MGS guy. And it’s a shame too because I believe him when he says he’s capable of more.

    • Elvick

I don’t think he can let go. He’s made statements in the past that made this very clear. Can’t remember exactly what he said, but remember the distinct feeling that I got from the interview.

It basically sounded like he can’t trust anyone to just do it, but at the same time, he never really gives anyone a chance. Since he’s always there to backseat drive/take over. :/

    • XiaomuArisu

Well he did made Z.O.E.1/2 and a third is underway.

  • isfuturebright

I Hope he makes something else other then metal gear

  • Icedus

Concepts like hunting down evil bioroid duplicates? In, oh, I don’t know, Russia?

  • Leonard Norwood Jr.

not surprising how kojima is finding ways to experiment and make something new with the help of his development team. You have to give this game major props for coming up with some new ideas. This just means that we’ll be playing these games with these new ideas implemented into them. Giving us a whole new gaming world. It don’t matter how it will be done so long as it works well and plays well too. After playing and witness the games Kojima makes, pretty much he’s definitely making it work.
