Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 Trailer Shows Gabriel As Dracula

By Ishaan . December 10, 2012 . 10:45am

Konami have released a new trailer for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 that shows Gabriel Belmont’s transformation into Dracula. Gabriel, who was the protagonist of the first game, returns for Lords of Shadow 2.

The question is, where are Trevor and Simon Belmont, Gabriel’s son and grandson respectively? In Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate, the two venture into Dracula’s castle, one after the other, to defeat their ancestor. Gabriel, too, is playable in the prologue of that game.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will be released for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2013. Meanwhile, Mirror of Fate will be released in March.

The trailer opens up a lot of new questions, but I’m glad that it seems like we’ll be playing as Dracula in modern day. That part truly excites me.

Man, my mind would’ve been blown at the ending of LoS if the LoS 2 debut trailer at E3 hasn’t spoiled it. That said, I’m loving LoS. Not one but two LoS games next year is gonna be awesome. Dracula being alive in LoS 2 makes MoF story kinda pointless though doesn’t it? They obviously fail at killing him. I guess they’ll lock him away and then he’ll wake up in modern times or something? I dunno.

As a matter of fact I think Dracula will be killed in MoF. Remember MoF happens a mere decades after LoS1 but LoS2 happens centuries later (but still in the past) AND a millenia later in the modern world.

Dracula, I think, will be killed by (maybe) Alucard at the end of MoF but not definitely. If anyone has ever played past CV games know that Dracula will always manage to resurrect so even if he’s killed in MoF he revives for the past events of LoS2 and maybe die again to resurrect in the present.

      Oh the possibilities!

I’m curious to see how much of the game will take place in the modern city shown at the end of the trailer.

So it seems that we’ll be jumping back and forth from Gabriel’s reign as Dracula and his revival in the modern world, then. Mercury Steam’s scenery in LoS was absolutely gorgeous, can’t wait to see what they do with the new setting.

Going by the ending of the first game, the modern day parts are going to be one evil fighting off another and probably a lot of wonder at how things have changed, with the past parts basically being Dracula rending armies in two and being the shadowiest lord of them all. Can’t wait for it.

  • Rafael Budzinski

…I think he were sealed by Simon (or someone before him, since I really believe Trevor had failed and became Alucard), and came to awake only in the modern days. So, the vengeance would be against the Belmont bloodline? Alucard itself? Or some great villain which we’ll be unaware of until the end of the game?

    • SirRichard

Well, (Lords of Shadow 1 spoilers ahead) when Zobek came to him in modern times, he came to get his help in defeating Lucifer and his armies again. This trailer shows a bit where Gabriel’s standing in his church/castle with the stained glass window broken; it was broken in the ending movie of LoS when he attempted to bite Zobek for blood.

      • Rafael Budzinski

…it’s true, I totally forgot Zobek in the ending from the first game. But I really wish that Lucifer isn’t the boss again (even the battle with him were one of the best final battles I’ve ever played), and really expect some major ties with Mirror of Fate.

It’s actually going to (partially) take place in the modern era as shown in the secret ending to the first game? HELLLL YESSSSS

so the next LOS will be 1999 castlevania and julius belmont?

  • Budgiecat

how can you become Dracula that doesn’t make sense

    • Fidelis

I don’t understand..are you even acquainted with the series at all?

Just look up Gabriel on the Castlevania wiki

  • Rick R

The Dragon El Dracul was Dracula’s father. Has he been confirmed as Dracula? Cause that wouldn’t make sense.

I wonder if I’m simply spoiled by years of hammy vampire acting, but I am just not feeling that monologue. Put some more OOOMPH into it darnit, make me feel the HAVE AT YOU, give me some real respectable baritone… Volde-Dracula does not please me. Also while I kinda side-eye him just naming himself Dracul and Dragon when I have no real idea of WHY he does it, like, what is his relation to the Draculs in the first place?

Anyhow- as long as there are awesome fights I will be satisfied, but I do wonder what kind of fights the modern age will bring. Modern vampire hunters? Firearms? Techo-golems? Or will the enemies be more or less the same as in older times?

    • Syn

I agree the about the ooomph part, a little more passion(thinking of Van-helsing Dracula) would have been just perfect. However, I think the reason he calls himself Dracul is due to the fact that he might consider himself the next great evil after Satan(who is sometimes referred to as a dragon), but am just speculating at this point.

      • Solomon_Kano

That would make sense. At the same time, he would be Dracula by the way Romanian naming went. Which is who he is, but his calling himself Dracul makes me wonder how he comes to be called Dracula. Dracul, the dragon, as you pointed out, is an epithet for the devil. He’s not literally Satan’s son, after all, so it doesn’t need to follow that naming but it really makes me wonder as to what makes him Dracula. Cox has referred to LoS as a sort of “Dracula Begins” and we have an Alucard, so he’s clearly meant to be him…

Actually, I think I can see how that goes. He calls himself “The Prince of Darkness”, a name given to Satan in Milton’s Paradise Lost. We see that the game returns to LoS’ modern-day ending, wherein Zobek said that the acolytes of Satan were preparing for his return. I’d imagine that the game sees Gabriel downgraded to Dracula when the real Prince of Darkness returns. Or perhaps, he’s just the only person that calls himself Dracul while everyone else calls him Dracula. Alucard does exist before we reach the modern setting, after all. That sounds likely enough.
