Vote For Bioshock Infinite’s Alternate Cover

By Ishaan . December 12, 2012 . 12:10pm

Below is Bioshock Infinite’s box art, featuring a guy with a big gun on the cover. “Guy with a big gun” isn’t exactly what attracts people to the Bioshock games, though, so naturally the Internet went crazy and did its thing, asking for the cover to be changed.

Irrational Games won’t be changing Bioshock Infinite’s cover, but they will provide a reversible cover, says Irrational founder, Ken Levine. If you go over to the company’s website, you can vote for which alternate cover you’d like to see printed on the reverse side of the box. Some of them look really cool:

  • Tiael

I like #4 and #6 on the poll site.

  • ragingmerifes

Always vote for the one which has the greatest amount of boobs, even if covered.

  • Cameron Ward

i like the red one. it has a vintage look that would fit the world of Bioshock Infinite

  • Ladius

Number 2 is one of the best thing to ever grace a boxart, imho.

As much as I understand their need to cater to the largest possible audience with the regular cover, I think they really went with one of the laziest boxarts they could have chosen, even considering what they were trying to do.

I mean, there’s nothing wrong with a badass main character holding a shotgun, but the context is awfully dull and says next to nothing about the game’s setting, making it hard to separate it from other games in the minds of those who don’t already know it. When you spend years building such a strong world and art direction it’s a shame to try to hide it instead of trying to blend it with traditional archetypes.

  • Shadowman

I really like design #1 and #6 I wish I voted for them all but design #1 have my most attention.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

I chose five (fourth one on this site), the others ones are just way too artsy and odd, while one puts the lady behind the man which seemed awkward.

  • Bloodios

I’d like to have the sixth design (first on SiliconEra) as the cover art for the box and the fourth (second on SiliconEra) for the manual.

  • Wake

It’s odd that they settled on such a generic cover. Well, 4 & 6 for me.

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

4 and 6, it just has to be one of those two.

  • Juuu

I’m very happy to see Levine and Irrational stepping up to do this. c: Now everyone’s happy-stereotypical manly-man cover to expand the audience, while long-establish Bioshock fans can get something more in the vain of the old titles. Ahh, compromise. It’s great. I voted for 5, since I think having both characters there is important, but I wouldn’t mind one of the artsy ones!

  • Prinnydoom

Either the one with elizabeth and songbird or the one with Dewitt and Elizabeth

  • epy

Voted for Design #6. Looks like a cover for a timeless game. Design #4, I dunno. I think it would fit better in a book, not my cup of tea. Everything else is meh.

  • Hollowkoopa

    4 and 6 are epic.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Number 6 for the win for me.

In that case, we should petition Gamestop to invert the covers before putting the games on shelf.

Also, Design #6 all the way! (top-left here)

  • Göran Isacson

Design number 4, says I. It just feels… classy. Glad we’re getting a choice though, sad as I am that they felt the need to make such a bland cover to appeal to a market that may just as well trade the game in for the next COD churned out of the threadmill, but hey- that’s the way cash rolls, isn’t it?

  • Aoshi00

Like most said, #6 looks really good, looks kinda like Alien, but I think that’s the cover of the upcoming artbook (unless the Amazon pic was just a placeholder).

It’s weird they’re not using #3 as the standard cover, at least the girl is next to the gun holding a shotgun.. #2 is really cool and retro like the Fallout art. If possible, I want #5 to be standard cover and #6 to be reversible..

I think I’ll vote for #6. The artbook should have all of these though :) can’t believe they went w/ such a generic cover after Bioshock 1 & 2.. This guy makes me think of Troy Baker :)

  • Wagner Paiva Fernandes

All of them look better than the NATHAN DRAKE one

  • Visa Vang

I’ll take one with the chick only… if you have it…

  • disqus_Tv2Em4NDgy

I honestly love that old looking one (top right), or the bottom right action cover too the max.

  • Oltheros

This is good damage control on their part. Wish more companies had a reversible actually.

  • Christian Wright

    c’mon guys! Design #6!!!!

  • Victor Hunter

I’m a fan of the red one and the the Rockwell-style one with Elizabeth and the Songbird.

I voted for the Rockwell style one because I felt like it embodied the Americana vibe more so than the red one which, to me, seems like it has more of a European influence. It looks like something you’d see in Paris around that time rather than the US which makes it a little out of place in a patriotic and xenophobic place like Columbia.

  • Kai2591

I actually like the “Guy with a big gun” cover. But those vintage look covers are quite unique..

  • neetyneety

I vote for all of them. Let’s forget the original, have the 4th one on the outside, and the other three in the inside or as the reversibles.

  • CirnoLakes

Good to see some people taking a bit of a backlash against the “bro dudes with guns” aesthetic all too prevalent in the gaming industry today.

From first person shooter fans of a first person shooter game, no less. I’m glad that there’s enough diversity within that fandom that slapping on a Call of Duty cover to every FPS won’t work. And yes, I say them, because I am not a part of the first person shooter fan community, at all. And that is an understatement.

As for the best covers, I’m going to have to go with the red one. It is appropriate in the same way simple, elegant, beautiful, Yoshitaka Amano cover arts are appropriate for Final Fantasy games.

It is simple and classy. And there are far too many floating heads in box art today.

  • Bakuryukun

    I’m cool with 4 or 6.
