Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Trailer Shows Off World, Battles

By Ishaan . December 19, 2012 . 6:50pm

Square Enix have prepared a new trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, which was presumably meant to be debuted in coordination with the Jump Festa event in Japan. A certain website accidentally broke embargo and ran the trailer publicly, following which a resourceful fan grabbed the video and uploaded it to YouTube before it was pulled. Check it out below:

As previously reported, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII takes place several years after Final Fantasy XIII-2, in a completely new setting. In the game, the world is set to end in 13 days. Players need to manage a clock system, where every action they perform uses up time from the clock.

Characters in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII all go about their own schedules, and depending on what time of day it is, you encounter different events, even on subsequent playthroughs.

    Oh my :3

Two downvotes already? Such strong hate this game is producing. Who is downvoting people, anyway

    • Luna Kazemaru

Just ignore the down votes they are all meaningless

  • Kevi Johnson-el

    Wow I cant wait

  • looks SO good *__*

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Goddamn, so hype. It looks great. The outfit definitely looks less awkward in-game. The battle system didn’t really look all that ARPGish though but maybe there are some timing elements.

Also I didn’t like that version of Blinded by Light. Lacked any “oomph” to it.

    • maumac77

I noticed a few things about the battle system although I’m not entirely sure if I’m correct on them, but to me it’s definitely more toward an ARPG if true. I can agree with the outfit…..but I dislike the swords, as insignificant as that is

    • Richard Brasfield

I agree. With your comment on the music…….

  • Benjamin Shaw

Sunglasses made me laugh, but I don’t mind the rest. Kinda looking forward to it, just to see. Maybe out of regular curiosity or maybe just morbid curiosity. They’re kinda getting my money either way, I suppose…

Also, the outfit seems to fit more in motion and with what some of the NPCs were wearing, so it’s fine. Besides, they seemed to hint at there being more than one outfit before.

    • midgard229

try 20+ outfits confirmed with full customization

      • Benjamin Shaw

I think I will try that, if they’re able to live up to that information. I know it’s a different company, but I have a different view of pre-release promises of content after Namco said Soul Calibur V would have a longer story. I’m sure there are a ton of other examples that are more relevant to the Final Fantasy series, as well.

        • midgard229

soul cal was going to have a longer story. Daishi said the story released was only 1/3 of the full story. they still had voice overs, even full cutscenes that they couldnt put in, including more characters like Bango and Cassandra which fought with a long slim sword and no shield.

namco just wanted the game out so daishi was rushed :(

  • Chris Yuen

    Accidentally broke embargo..yea right=X

  • juma086

Were those vocals to blinded by light? or am i just hearing what i want to hear? TAKE MY MONEY SE TAKE IT ALL

  • JaimeLara

    lol. what is this….

  • Nitraion

Is the game battle system finally on manual mode?

  • DesmaX

… Nice change to the battle system, actually. I like combo systems

But the movement ins battle feels kinda… weird.

I mean, the battle system is supposed to be more like an Action RPG, right? It feels like it’s automatic (And it doesn’t look like its like “Press the button and she will go to the enemy” like in the Tales games. I mean, there’s a small indication in the HUD when a command it’s selected)

  • jiripollas_ac666

    Lol, looks like assasins creed

    • Wait what

Assassin’s Creed was definitely the first game to ever have a climbing and platforming mechanic. I cannot roll my eyes at you hard enough.

      • Cameron Ward

that isnt the point he is making.

      • SauriansMaster!!

he means the costume looks like ezio,

  • FFmax

Oooh, someone is gonna get fired. Sweet trailer though.

    • Luna Kazemaru

I don’t think they going to fire anyone but they might be in some trouble tho

  • baha

Ladys and Gentlemen, this looks horrible as f***, all hope is lost, support the bravely default localisation!

  • Can’t wait to play it.

  • riceisnice

But I wanted to play as Hope :(

    • amagidyne

      I don’t believe you.

  • Azuardo

There are some “hmm” moments that make me question some of the things in this trailer. But I’m still looking forward to it.

  • Aoshi00

The city seems a bit simple, or it’s meant to look artsy and abstract, like Kingdom Heart? Dunno what to think at this point, I really enjoyed 13-2’s time traveling and story a great deal.. in 13-2, we control Noel, Serah, and monsters, do we only get to control Lightning here? I wish we could actually walk inside the train and talk w/ people too instead of just a cutscene. Also in general I don’t prefer to be timed, like Riku and Sora running out of time and alternating in KH3D.. still looking forward to this, and hope to see the rest of the cast in some way…

  • daylightdies

    Looks sexy as hell!

  • maumac77

So it’s definitely more of an ARPG, yet they seem to have kept the concept of switching between roles. Towards the end one of the battle segments has the roles being switched and the four actions changing with it. So I guess we’ll be limited to four commands per role? Although they all had a mesh of physical and magical attacks as well as a guard command. Mere speculation of course. Just like hearing a “familiar voice” doing the briefing leaves me with Hope…

  • Herok♞

looks really fun, I Hope I can sink my Fangs into it before it Snows next year

    • DesmaX

Sazh a great idea, my friend!

      • Couldn’t have Cid it better myself!

        • Christopher Nunes

I’ll Serah you guy around when the time comes!

          … That sounded much better in my head. ^^;

        • Juan Andrés Valencia

So I went to Starbucks and ordered a Vanille Latte Frappuchino. /lolbadjoke

        • Jordan Luk

This Trailer is so awesome and Cool it makes me Shiva

    • AnimusVox

      Oh Yuj

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

I see what you did there :3

      • Guest

        Yuel* did there.

    • Good job Lightning up the mood. I Hope this game turns out as good as the trailer makes it out to be. Vanille.

      • AnimusVox

I think we Yag need to just take a Jihl pill with these puns.

    • Barrit

The spring sounds like perfect timing, right before the butterfly hatch from their Cocoon.

    • Well, let’s just hope SE doesn’t Dajh the issues that the other games had. The shield looks a bit Oerba-kill, but I’m digging how Light seems to be a forgotten figure.

  • bluegarigari

hmm, not really into Lightning’s new look

  • pressUPfororanges

    Horatio, is that you?

  • Vincent Michaud

Firstly, I’m a huge fan of Final Fantasy. Some people didn’t like XIII but I thoroughly enjoyed it – the level design, the characters, the story and graphics were great. However, this trailer is simply lacking. The towns are uninspiring, it feels inferior to XIII and lastly offers no continuation to XIII-2 whatsoever judging by the trailer. In the end, it feels like SE is trying to milk the franchise to its bones. I’m not liking this :(

    • Well it is a continuation from the XIII-2.The trailer just doesn’t show it :/ The scenery is lacking I agree but this is only a trailer so I’m not going to say anything else till the actual game comes out.

  • Ethan_Twain

Well this is pretty cool! The dialogue lines and voice work still aren’t inspiring any enthusiasm, but the graphics are still great and the shift to a 1 person battle system seems cool and hey, looks like Lightning has a little mobility to her now. We’re obviously not going to get Assassin’s Creed here, but the ability to do anything more than just slide around on the ground is a step in the right direction says I.

Here’s hoping player mobility is more Legend of Zelda with context sensitive reactions to the environment, and less FF X-2 with it’s circle button giving you big goofy jumps over everything without requiring any sort of player finesse.

  • Why are there pictures hanging on the buildings?

This really looks like Requiem of the Goddess: THE GAME.

Most polished in the series guys.

    • I know!! I mean, I don’t know either!!! Framed pictures EVERYWHERE.

Also couches, dining tables and telephone booths randomly tossed about.

  • MrTyrant

Do the graphics looks worse? or they look very simple? perhaps the model are simple or maybe the trailer has very low quality…the battles looks good so far.

Will lightning be the only character we’ll use?

    • Graphics can be tweaked from now till it goes in production. Probably shouldn’t say much about the game at this time.

      • MrTyrant

Yeah gotta see the real game in action, there are some things that don’t look very well in the trailer but I believe they can improve it in the final version.

The importan things is that now we have a general idea of what are they doing…

        • Yeah and then now we will have hater roaming around new article related to this. Not sure if I’m looking forward to that. I’m sure we will be seeing comments regarding how bland it looks and it’s frame rate

          • MrTyrant

Trolling and hatin is my profession too but for moments i can give arguments and not being over-negative haha.

  • KingGunblader

Now we can have official *takes off sunglasses* memes for Lightning. Get to it, Internet.

In all seriosuness, what I can gather from the trailer confirms what I suspected the battle system would be like. Shift paradigms, actions are mapped to the buttons. Hopefully you can actually control her movement.

Third and finally, I like the costume even less seeing it in motion.

    • Here you go but better.

    • Luna Kazemaru
    • maumac77

The system seems reminiscent to her playstyle in Duodecim

      • KingGunblader

        You got that too?

Also, I’m not sure why they traded out the role names (Commando, Ravager etc.) for the actual paradigm names (Cerebrus, Divinity etc.) considering there’s only one character.

        • maumac77

Maybe because the role can now have both magic and Physical commands? Seems to make more sense that way. Also some of the skills might be passive like SMITE or LAUNCH

        • Ehren Rivers

They did not trade role names for Paradigm names. In LRXIII, Lightning has Styles instead of Roles. A Style is comprised of outfit, weapon, shield, and the abilities you choose to put on the four face buttons. You switch between these combinations as you would switch Paradigms in the earlier games.

The Cerberus Style is the only Style we’ve seen which has the name of a XIII/XIII-2 Paradigm. Divinity and Enchanter are not the names of Paradigms or Roles. Also, early on in announcement they mentioned a styled named ‘Holy Liberator’, which is again not the name of any Paradigm or Role.

  • OkamiKing

….. Is the video lagging or the game lagging? Eh game looks good nonetheless…..

  • saxophone15

Outfit looks fine in game. I need to see more, but I will probably enjoy this (I enjoyed both XIII and XIII-2).

  • Setsuryuu

So, finally a conclusion to the Final Fantasy XIII saga huh? And yeah Lightning’s look really seems better to me in-game than in that picture scan. I can’t say what to think of the plot yet and I’m not sure how much more towards ARPG it is compared to previous XIII, but at the very least it seemed faster. I wonder from this trailer if it’ll have plataforming elements or how much of it…

Also the gifs coming up already of Lightning with the sunglasses are quite amusing as well: also

    • I think she does too. The thing I thought was “She’s Bat-woman” xD
I saw some of gifs already on Tumblr. (the joys of being on tumblr ;D)

    • komiko12

She looks quite cool with the shades.

  • Suicunesol

I’m sorry. Screw you XIII haters. Hype get. I like it and want to play it. I even like Lightning’s new costume a little bit more after this footage (minus the sunglasses).

The only problem is that the whole scenario is out of left field and doesn’t really have anything to do with the previous games. But that’s okay. Maybe that’s what the series needs.

    • Luna Kazemaru

well from what I seen on twitter and other sites I’ve seen hype or something close to it. The only site that seems to have a full load of haters is Gaf and or /v/ but well /v/ hates everything it seems.

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

        Ain’t that the truth

    • MrTyrant

Well it your opinion as the haters have their own.

    • Wait what

It most certainly does have to do with the previous games.
You know how the world and time and everything got fucked at the end of XIII-2? This is the world that was left after that, hundreds and hundreds of years later.

  • Go2hell66

this just looks like more of the same…

    • maumac77

      Not even~~~

  • Safros9

Is it just me, or does the framerate seem pretty bad at times? Mostly when it showed Lightning doing something like jumping, it just didn’t flow well at all.

    • SauriansMaster!!

framerate appears choppy when exploring but combat animation appear fluid

  • Oh Chocolina is still alive?

    • surakian

Everybody is still alive. Except Serah and Yeul.

      • From wikipedia and FF wikia this game seem takes place hundred of years in the future. How are they…still alive?

        • FitzpatrickPhillips

Time stopped after the events of XIII-2. People don’t age anymore.

          • Oh right I forgot. Meh so much for my memories of the game haha

        • surakian

When Chaos flooded Pulse, its inhabitants stopped aging. For all purposes, time was stopped because both realms had crossed into each other. There was no longer an Invisible World where the dead go, no Visible World where the living grew.

          • Thanks! I think I need to sleep. It’s really early in the morning

      • Priscilla Tang

If they did this correctly. Team Nora should be dead. (During the time when Hope went into a few hundred year sleep).

      • Nananaruru

Noel! possiblity that he never existed

        • surakian

Noel(s hand) is in the trailer for like a half a second during that green static-y mess. So he’s alive.

    • Herok♞

Well she was already a time traveler.

      • Oh yeah…forgot! talking of her I remember people were saying Chocolina is Sasz’z baby chocobo since they shared the same name. Not sure if that was ever confirmed.

        • Randy Marsh

It was confirmed they are the same character in Sazh’s DLC after you find all the chocobo chicks in Serendipity.

          • oh right. Never bought that DLC since I wasn’t interested in the mini games and all. It wasn’t worth the 320msp. Thanks for telling me.

    • amagidyne

      Not dead. Dreaming.

      Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Chocolina Square-Enix wgah’nagl fhtagn.

  • SirRichard

Perhaps it’s just me, but it looks more or less exactly the same as the last two. Yeah, the combat UI’s changed, but it looks to be the same except you assign commands to buttons instead of digging into a menu/hitting Auto Battle.

Perhaps it just looks the same but plays differently, too early to say, but the early glimmers of hope I had are beginning to fade.

    • SauriansMaster!!

      >No autobattle
      you wot m8t?

      • SirRichard

Because it still looks exactly the same as the last two games. Early chatter about it had given the impression that they were changing combat up entirely, when really all they’ve done is removed the button that makes the game play itself, far as I can tell.

Otherwise it’s third verse, same as the last two verses, when I was hoping for more. Removing autobattle doesn’t change the rest of the games’ problems.

  • Rocket D

All I can say really is I want this game to happen. I think it looks great and I’m excited about it. If this leak was accident or not the hype is up and I’m on board. I enjoyed the first two and know this game will end the story with a bang. I know everyone isn’t fond of the outfit or the game itself but I can say this overly used but very appropriate phrase: haters gonna hate.

  • endaround

So Lighting is now Bayonetta huh?

    • Elvick

      She wishes.

Only thing Lightning has on Bayonetta is proportions. Bayonetta’s head is tiny/her body is huge.

  • Luna Kazemaru

Hmm more or less to early for me to say about the game 13 was alright for the most par to me 13-2 ended up kinda meh but I’m not going to look to much into this one since its just the first trailer.

  • This ACTUALLY looks very good!
First time in a long while I’ve felt positive about a console FF game.

  • imaguni

“Leak”, riiiiight… Not that I might at all though, Luxerion looks gorgeous, the battle system looks really smooth (hope the end result is like that) and I am honestly really excited.

  • Niermyico

At the **1:07 mark and so on, you can see that Lightning is wearing another outfit and another sword and shield.

    • Harley Heat Santillanes

…It’s just a CGI cutscene at 1:17 stop lying hoe

      • SauriansMaster!!

foolish mortal, watch the paradigm shifts carefully. She changes uniform. look for the enchanter and cerberus paradigms

      • Niermyico

Oh! My bad I meant *1:07! lol!

  • scratchbach

Actually really excited for this! Still working through XIII-2 (which I’m liking a lot), and I’m a sucker for trilogies.

  • ResidentMetroid

Everything looks good, except Lightning’s outfit.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

    Looks absolutely amazing. I’m hyped!

  • Randy Marsh

Yes, the auto-battle command is now gone! That bar above the HP bar, has MP finally returned to the series? Finally more abilities in these games! I no longer need to spam just Blitz and Attack anymore, I can now spam Attack, Blitz, Light Slash and Heavy Slash!

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Blitz was totally useless from my experience. And yeah, auto-battle is finally gone. -1 less complaint! :D

      • Blitz was great to quickly eliminate groups of weak enemies, at least from my experience with XIII-2.

        • Juan Andrés Valencia

It’s fairly useful in XIII-1 as well.

        • FitzpatrickPhillips

I found it more effective to attack them individually. You did more damage and even if they were group, your character would switch quickly. It also uses up less of the ATB gauge so you have a bit more control.

    • Detrimont

yeah, that’s not a MP bar, it’s the new ATB bar

  • TruSpindash

Really enjoyed 13 and to a lesser degree 13-2, so I am already looking forward to see how this game turns out. Interested to see what changes they have made to the battle system. Also, wearing sunglasses at night is always cool.

  • …the hell? Can we get some “then” and “now” comparison shots regarding the original FFXIII and the madness I just saw?

    • OathkeeperSoraXIII

well if you look at the alpha stage for XIII it’s fairly similar…

      • OathkeeperSoraXIII

combat wise that is. people complained that it was changed from the alpha combat system. so it’s cool to see them go back it ^^

  • AnimusVox

Man, Light looks pretty hot. She looks a little different.

  • Paradox me

Well, that was interesting. Still not a whole lot to go on, but I like the movement and the design for most things not related to Lightning’s new outfit, which is awful.

It didn’t show off the open world or any time mechanics, which are what I’ve been most curious about, and it’s hard to tell if the combat will be the breath of fresh air that I’d hoped it would be after two games using the same system (that grew stale due to its lack of depth). Although it looks that by focusing on a single character and taking a more action-oriented approach, individual actions will matter more than the last two games.

I don’t care at all for any part of XIII’s story, but the gameplay here looks promising and I’m looking forward to seeing more.

    • SauriansMaster!!

hate to break it to you but the game is not open world. dunno where you got that idea, probably from the whole world driven thing. they meant expansive world not open world like GTA

      • Ehren Rivers

That’s not true at all. One of their major marketing points has been the ability to go anywhere you want, whenever you want. You have the option to get on the monorail and go pretty much anywhere, and in the interviews about the first round of playtesting they made a point to mention that players easily got lost and that they were able to start off their game by going “Where do I want to go first?”.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Is she in Twilight Town if so, Is Hayner, Pence, and Olette there as a team up? *bad joke aside* The poor girl looks out of place, and combat looks super floaty

  • Muffum

Looks very… eh. Nothing about the trailer’s presentation was spectacular. All voices involved sounded very bored, the background textures are rather underwhelming, and from what can be seen of the gameplay, it looks clunky.

should i play ffx13-2, or can i pick up the story from just ff13

    • Azuardo

It’s probably worth playing XIII-2 to see the true ending of that one, but if you can’t be bothered, you could just read a summary on FF Wikia and watch some YouTube videos.

  • Wait what

  • xavier axol

i just don’t know what to feel about this game, on one hand i would love to see what happens to lighting, seeing she’s the only one i actually liked from FF XIII (i would had prefer if the frist game was only about her, every body else was annoying). but on the other hand, square enix had a chance to prove themselves with FF XIII-2 and they didn’t ( at least from my prospective).

this time around, i can definitely see a dramatic change in the battle system and plot. but in my mind, there’s this thing telling me (that is too little, too late). also how come they can came up with a new final fantasy XIII sequels so fast compare to the unfinish (thoug shalt not be name, but also starts with ff XIII) game? it makes me question if the game is gonna be (at least) as good as ff XIII-2 or ffXIII.

i know that, i speak for the majority here when i say, i really want for square enix to relocated their resources to new projects (and not making spin off of kingdom hearts or making a new final fantasy XIII). people want kingdom hearts 3, ffvsXIII, and the next FF game. not to mention those other franchises like dissidia, parasite eve, soul rever, legends of mana, chrono cross, a new star ocean. and the list goes on, that’s why i’m very disappointed with square enix. but at least i like they way, they’re managing eidos studios.

so right now. all i know is that, i’m gonna speak with my wallet and not gonna support them. unless they star listening to their fans (who have been very supportive). square enix should look at what namco is doing things lately with tales of xillia, ni no kuni, and dark souls, they are becaming my favorite jrpg publisher. and if people want to see more of these games then they should support namco for bringing these games over, instead of a publisher who haven’t done much lately.

    • Azuardo

You can’t be expecting all of those SE games when they pretty much put everything on hold and got everyone to work on the FF14 reboot.

It’s my personal belief that Versus has probably taken some drastic time-consuming changes, and they probably asked Toriyama and co. to force a three-part series of XIII to fill in the empty space of little to no FF games in 2013. They must have known they wouldn’t be able to get Versus out next year, so are filling in the gaps with something they can get out quickly i.e. another XIII game.

I don’t even know if Versus will even make current gen any more. It won’t make 2013, but won’t the next set of Sony and MS consoles be out in 2014, presumably? It wouldn’t surprise me if Versus was pushed onto next gen consoles.

      • xavier axol

“You can’t be expecting all of those SE games when they pretty much put everything on hold and got everyone to work on the FF14 reboot.” really? you actually believe that? we are talking about a publisher of how many ip’s now? and the many games they had constantly releasing from the psone era to ps2? the fact that they could only release final fantasy XIII and haven’t move on to ffxV, it’s not a valid excuse if you ask me. what about the fact that capcom realse two resident evil games 5&6, or fromsoftware with demon’s souls and dark souls while working on other games. namco with soul caliber v, tekkentag2, tales of xillia 1&2, and other games. not to mention about having the time to publish ni no kuni here in the west. i can bet you that square enix is bigger than them and yet….

        • Azuardo

You know as much as I do about what exactly the people at SE are doing. But surely you must believe that something is not going right with Versus if you’re questioning why more XIII games have come out before that. They’re two different teams working on two FF series (XIII and Versus), and it’s clear that Nomura is running into problems with Versus or something else entirely, else it would be out by now.

This is not the same era as PS1/2. They are not having the same problems as back then. Just because they were able to do so well in the past doesn’t mean they can’t run into problems now. It’s well documented that SE have had a lot of trouble this gen. Eidos has thankfully been keeping them afloat in the West.

  • Corey Owens

These textures look terrible. The environments they showed look flat, almost painted on and completely void of liveliness.

This is being released on PS3 right?

    • Paradox me

They were supposedly 30% through development when the game was announced and press reported that the trailer shown behind closed doors was very rough.

Three months later, this should still be a fairly early build of the game.

    • MrRobbyM

As Paradox said, the game is still in very early development. I’d give it time before making any real judgments outside of themes.

      • Elvick

Honestly, if they’re going to be showing it this early *AND* saying it’s coming out *next year* then they deserve any criticism they get.

It’s one thing to show early footage, without a release window. It’s another to say, “Yeah, this is what we’ve got, but it’s coming next year guys.”

    • The video itself is low quality that has only been upscaled to 720p. Still too early to judge as well, it’s the first trailer and the development as the others have said is still in the middle stages.

  • NANAandLIZZYfanatic

Ooh not as much hate in here as I expected.

    I is excited!

    • alixraen

Well yeah, most of the detractors I think have given up at this point.

      • NANAandLIZZYfanatic

Well maybe here but every site I went to to try and watch trailer when it had been removed the comments were all just bashing and ignorance. One person even said something like “They need to stop playing that horrible music from FFXIII” I’m assuming they meant Blinded by Light and if that’s the case they have atrocious taste in music.

    • Luna Kazemaru

well for the most part this site has mod that you know. Do their jobs lol but Nah I’m sure the haters and ignorant post will pop up sooner or later. IMO the trailer doesn’t look that great but its to early i guess to say about the game itself.

      • Awww, Luna, you have nice things to say, too. <3

        • Luna Kazemaru

I don’t know where everyone gets the idea I’m a evil and hateful person I can be nice :x

          • Don’t worry, I still love you. I think.

          • Luna Kazemaru

          • What the hell is :x ?

          • Luna Kazemaru

          • Silenced by love, no doubt.

          • She won’t say she’s in love…*cue jazz trumpets*

          • We should all run before she catches wind of this. You guys don’t want to be on the receiving end of one of her rampages.

          • Noted.

*runs away from Luna the fastest*

          • Hmmm……. (^__^)–> The stuff you posted
A lot of ppl is not as tolerant as some of us lol.

            @Ishaan:disqus Love eh….. :P

          • Luna Kazemaru

Dylan I’ll beat you with a hammer and no one will find out :3

          • Shh. Don’t tell a soul. She’s totally got a thing for me. @ValkyriaXEdge:disqus

      • NANAandLIZZYfanatic

Well usually 1st trailers are just 100% cutscene or barely anything so I’m glad we got to see a little gamplay. I’m a sucker for the XIII series so I’m getting it either way (even tho I loathe Lightning, her new costume is a vast improvement from XIII-2 tho IMO).

    • Lol you should read the comments above. But the downvoters are working quite hard ==

      • NANAandLIZZYfanatic

I spoke too soon lol, now there is hate everywhere! lol

Even all of my comments have downvotes now lol, LAME!

        • Luna Kazemaru

you really shouldn’t pay any mind to the downvotes it happens even when you have a legit comment or not.

          • NANAandLIZZYfanatic

Well I mean I usually know when it’s coming or I purposely bring it upon myself but neither of my comments said anything worth getting a downvote. Some haters be lurkin.

  • alixraen

Bandwagoners gonna bandwagon. I skipped XIII-2 and this is a definitive skip as well.

    • Luna Kazemaru

I don’t see how anyone is on a bandwagon on here just saying

      • alixraen

Just another way to say that of course people are hyped for it, it’s XIII.

        • NANAandLIZZYfanatic

Pretty sure there’s more “of course people hate it, it’s XIII” or should I say “of course people hate it, it isn’t FFVII”.

          • alixraen

Not on this site, the XIII haters get downvoted into oblivion. And please, don’t drag up VII. It has no relevance to this game.

          • NANAandLIZZYfanatic

They’re both FF, are they not?
Lightning is called the female Cloud, is she not?

Just speakin the truth cause there are a lot of FF fans that are unfortunately stuck in the past and I honestly don’t think can be impressed.

I haven’t checked since I made the last comment but there were about as many upvotes on the hate comments as downvotes.

          • You should look through the whole thread. People anticipating the game get downvotes too. Even some reasonable comments couldn’t be left alone. Some people are just abusing the function.

          • alixraen

I read through the entire thread, and at that time there were almost no anti-XIII comments and the ones that were had significant downvotes. Of course both groups are going to downvote each other’s comments. The new system is quite silly, really.

  • Unlimax

People here are Overhyped not sure why :/
Nothing Changed even the Battlesystem looks The same exact thing they just change the UI and add some new moves Oh and brace yourself for so many Side-quests , That’s all .. They just milk every little thing of her , I Swear “Cotton Candy” Fans .. If Versus Get Canceled because of your Precious Lightning saga …. I WILL… I WILL …… This is out of the hands :( .. But if that happens you are the cause of that.

I know that this is off-topic but you must listen to the fate of the game.

    • Azuardo

The fate of Versus is not dependent on the XIII games. They’re made by two different teams.

      • Unlimax

Yes but Yoshinori Kitase is the Co-Producer of Versus and the same guy who already working on Lightning saga RIGHT NOW !

        • Azuardo

Sure, but there could be any number of reasons why Versus isn’t released yet. And I can assure you, releasing XIII games will not be the cause of Versus being cancelled. In fact, the fact that Versus hasn’t been released yet is probably the reason they’ve forced out another XIII game, since there would be a big gap of no FF games next year otherwise.

          • Luna Kazemaru

they already said it wasn’t 13 holding productions it was FF14

            So yeah

          • Azuardo

Exactly. They put everyone to work on the FF14 reboot. Either way, Versus still probably would be in the same position it is now if the reboot hadn’t happened. Whatever happens to Versus, it has nothing to do with the 13 games.

          • Unlimax

A team from XIII trying to help the development of Versus from the beginning wouldn’t hurt the franchise at all .. but WTH should we do if Yoichi Wada is still the CEO of Square company , I put my hand on my heart for the fate of the game … Hopefully will end the development process to the fullest .

          • Azuardo

Well I hope as much as you do that Versus turns out well but, I’m not going to keep my expectations high. The longer it goes on the more people will expect. I think it’s inevitable that it won’t live up to expectations. I can also see it being pushed onto PS4.

        • Guys, a producer’s job is to make sure the game is on budget, on schedule, and up to quality.

Sometimes, producers have creative input, but the creation of the game doesn’t necessarily depend on its producer. It’s more dependent on the actual creative staff, like the director and the team leads in charge of art, programming etc.

This is how one person can be producer on three different games at once, and none of them will be adversely affected if he knows what he’s doing and has a good, trusting relationship with the development teams on those projects.

    • Luna Kazemaru

‘cotton candy’ fans…Really? Know what I would normally say something in snark but I don’t feel like dealing with butt hurt right now

      • Guest

Cotton candy is sweet .. just like Lightning ⁀

        • Luna Kazemaru

I wasn’t referring to you about the butt hurt just saying

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Maybe you should do some research on what they’re changing. Sure, the UI look similar but you can’t really tell if its really an ARPG or not from this trailer alone. People are not “Cotton Candy” fans because they like something you don’t.

    • KyoyaHibari

I’ll side with you on the anti-XIII & Lightning matter, but you may want to read up on how Versus & the standard XIII are being made by separate teams.

    • amagidyne

Lay off the cotton candy until you make more sense. Withdrawal is hell, but it’s better than the alternative.

    • SauriansMaster!!

      >battlesystem looks the exact same thing
      >no autobattle or long menus of abilities
      i dont even…..

  • anjohinc

So I guess it’s a definite ‘yes’ that Lightning will be the only playable character in Lightning Returns? Can’t help but feel a tad ‘unfulfilled’ about that, to be honest :-(

  • Detrimont

from the battle system it looks like commands are set up for the d-pad and you change paradigms via L1 and R1, but i’m probably wrong

  • Detrimont

    also looks assassins creed inspried

  • sperium

This “World Will End In X Days” Set up reminds me of Majora’s Mask.

  • Zero Shift

Finally back to playing as Lightning. Looking forward to this game!

  • xavier axol

i like her old outfit better, it’s much simpler and makes me notice her face and body more than the outfit itself. people are more distracted by the outfit than the person who is wearing it (why aren’t people talking about her gorgeous hair or face or body?).

  • Cameron Ward

the game world looks really bland. the graphics dont look that good either. the combat system looked confusing at first, but looking at the trailer a second time, it seems interesting, but can’t we just see Versus get a release already?

    • SauriansMaster!!

the game was announced as 30% done a month ago, what do you want from them?

      • Cameron Ward

well, more than just black and white buildings.

    • It’s just one location, a city in one of the four islands of LR’s world. Graphics don’t look that good because this is just an upscaled 360p video. The real HD video is coming out on Saturday.

  • Sam Park

Did they just improve the system by giving something that wasn’t in FFXIII before, a Choice of Command?!!!

    • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

You can opt not to use Auto-Battle, you know?

Also, no. I didn’t play XIII-2 and I still won’t be playing this.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

Did you never go to the options?

  • Sam Park

Still doesn’t interest me, since Lightning is still a creepy possibly incestuous lesbian bitch with a so many problems

    • anarchy_panty

Say that again, and explain to me how any of it’s a bad thing.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Comments like this have no place here. Please take a moment to read our rules. Warned.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

      Who let /v/ in?

      • Luna Kazemaru

        i lol’d

      • Muffum

Well now that’s just silly; /v/ loves Lightning for exactly those reasons.

        • Luna Kazemaru

/v/ loves video games? Thats new to me

  • anarchy_panty

    JC Denton got pretty hot.

    • Göran Isacson

I chortled. Not proud of it, but I did.

  • I liked the trailer and now I’m even more excited for the game! Loving the new tweaks to the battle system as well.

  • Seems relevant.
(Credits to Kaishou for posting this at OT.)

Just reposting this frm a Paradox me:
They were supposedly 30% through development when the game was announced and press reported that the trailer shown behind closed doors was very rough.
Three months later, this should still be a fairly early build of the game.

    • HAHA! Hahahaha. Oh shit. XD

    • Neophoton

I used to think that was really cheesy, but now I love that part of the trailer just because of that .gif.

  • komiko12

Yup, I agree with the guy below, the battle style is similar to her style in Dissidia.
Switching between roles but you can actually pick which attack she will use.

  • サレム

Ohey! it’s Assassin’s Creed the RPG

  • Wow, speaking in terms of raw graphics the game look horrible. Also a shame they didn’t take this opportunity to create an action/real-time combat system. Oh well, not really a fan of Final Fantasy anyways. I’ll play the series when it does away with turn based combat. It’s one of the reasons I was genuinely excited about Type-Zero.

    • SauriansMaster!!

      >horrible graphics
      game isn’t even in alpha
      >when it does away with turn based combat
did we just watch the same trailer?

      • Peeka Chu

Technically it is turn-based. The turns are just on timers. Enemy has one, as do you once actions are selected. There is no free-moving, 360 degree, real-time response or combat. So he is correct. And the graphics were rather unimpressive. Alpha or no, you only get one chance to make a first impression, so they could have waited until they had something more polished to show.

Isn’t this supposed to be out in March? That is worrying.

Edit: Checked the Amazon release – Dec 13th (placeholder though).

      • I thought this was releasing early next year? Even if I’m wrong where did you get the info that this is an Alpha build?

Yes, I saw menus being pressed in the middle of the battles.

  • zferolie

So who else thought of Assassin’s Creed when watching the bits of her running through the town? Even her outfit reminds me of the assassin outfit.

  • Belenger

So basically, forget everything you learned on 13 and 13-2, its the toriyama coaster ride time~~, I just hope he does not pull a 3rd birthday (ending), Unlimited saga, Mindjack or Front Mission Evolved…

Oh my god why did I even start playing this series.

  • Pythia Brixham

So can anyone answer why this game is called “Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII” and NOT Final Fantasy XIII-3″?

    • NANAandLIZZYfanatic

Becuase Square-Enix titled it “Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII” and NOT “Final Fantasy XIII-3”.

      • amagidyne

So can anyone answer why Square-Enix titled it “Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII” and NOT Final Fantasy XIII-3″?

        • NANAandLIZZYfanatic

          lol I tried.

    • Elvick

Because people didn’t like that Lightning wasn’t the main character in XIII-2, so they shoved her name into the title. Like a “HEY LOOK, SHE’S BACK SO YOU CAN LIKE FFXIII RELATED STUFF AGAIN”.

That’s my guess. So basically, a marketing thing.

  • Richard N

Oh Sazh…. will you ever have your turn in the limelight?

  • Settsuo

Well I’ve come this far so why not? It doesn’t look all that spectacular, but I’ve only seen 1:33 seconds of it so that must be all that it has to show for itself amirite?

It’s easily early development, still looks like it’s trying to render in certain parts. This was just to show premise and theme. What they are attempting to go for. Not bad, but they need to step it up a bit.

  • AyaisMUsikWhore

I didn’t like 13 and or 13-2, mostly for story issues, but this one looks kind of good. It’s been a while since I’ve played a Square RPG so what exactly is an ARPG? This one is very new to me. Or is it that time Gauge thing they introduced in 13 which is basically the fancy name for it?

  • The wait is soooooo over!

  • Nitraion

If i looks at video the battle system finally on manual mode…
and you press corresponding button to perform action remind me alot of valkyria profile…. If the battle system is manual and there something like AP,MP,SP,CC or whatever they called.. to sacrifice if you want use the skill
i think i give shot to SE game again… id on’t care about story anymore…

  • Yuj guys can’t possibly Hope anything out of this! This game has been Lightning my wallet for years, and for what? Kitase, you Gadot to get your head outta your ass, Lebreau!! For Kreiss sakes!! Yeul have Noel idea how much i FARRON hate this!!

    • Not sure wherever I should laugh at you or that.

      • Luna Kazemaru

the hell did they even say?−

  • Nemesis_Dawn

I’m excited for this one. I know many will disagree, but they’re entitled to their opinions.

  • Omikuji

Ohh… her outfit really sticks out and moves really strangely in motion, and then being around people who for once don’t have too ridiculous get ups. Her arms just look… really really strange to me thanks to those sleeves.

  • Nightmare637

What happened here? Hate, Hype, and A love Drama that will be remembered throughout time all in one comment section.

on topic, Ididen’t really like 13-2 but I’ll probably get this for completionists sake.

    and it looks interesting.

    • Herok♞

you can also say that about any DmC comment section.

  • Guest

I did a quick summary of the Battle System, looks like there will be more than one action gauge per paradigm shift.

  • kenshee

I’m kinda hoping this really is still a rough build, and they work on it a LOT more…
I’m already inherently opposed to the idea that you always feel like you’re on a timer. (I stopped playing valkyrie profile the minute I noticed, the only thing stopping me from finishing bof5? The dragon timer >.>)

But this looked like the framerate is consistently worse than even XIII-2. (or is it just me / youtube?)

Also, light seems to be fighting alone as expected. I’m not sure if I like that yet, but I guess it’ll give us time to think about commands in real-time, so as not to have to rely on auto-battle anymore.

I’m still getting it day-one, but this trailer left me liking it less than before.

  • Anime10121

A one minute trailer (though it does look awesome) for a game thats
supposed to release next year is not very promising on Squares end. Ima
need for them to deliver at least one of dem epic 6-9 minute trailers
VsXIII and the Kingdom Hearts series usually gets.

But hey, I was hyped when they announce this was the last game in the “regular” XIII series, and if this builds off of XIII-2 like XIII-2 did off of XIII, then I think It’ll probably be the best the series has offered yet.

  • ShinoZero

I don’t know, for me she looks like a hot japanese Batman.

  • Gmoyajp

Noting New about This seem’s Like XIII meets Majora’s Mask. They have time to make another Title for XIII and yet FFXIII versus or XV is not out yet….is a legend now.

    • Why would XV be out? Also the name is FF Versus XIII not FFXIII Versus.

Concerning XIII, they already have assets meaning, the development cycle is shorter than making a game from scratch which would require planning, etc.

      • Elvick

Well, they may as well just rename VS XIII to FFXV. Since the “FFXIII” brand is damaged. Yes there are those who like it, I know, but there are plenty who don’t.

Best to start fresh. Not like they need “XIII” in the title anyway for it to remain part of Fabula Nova Crystallis. Which most people don’t care about anyway I’d wager.

        • I can’t see how the FFXIII brand can be “damaged” when it wasn’t even held in high regard by some people in the first place.

Whether its called Versus XIII or XV, the game will have high expectations to that need to be met by the consumers due to a single trailer and minute info which could all be unhinged by the reality of the finish product.

I feel that – for some – Versus XIII is way of recapturing their love for VII with current gen systems, and nothing more. I really do think that people need to rein in their expectations for the game as well.

Well, once Versus XIII is completed, the series will too – pending any (other) sequels.

          • Elvick

Before XIII came out, people were excited for it. Each new game starts at a clean slate. With tons of excitement for just being a new Final Fantasy. The brand was fine until people played the game and we got word of the b/s during development.

Then XIII-2 was announced, which only hurt it more. Then it’s throwing salt in the wounds with Lightning’s trip to Gamestop.

Most were willing to try out XIII. Not so much XIII-2. And even less with Lightning.

That is a damaged brand. Many are sick of XIII and anything related to it. The brand would have been fine if they just stopped at XIII, but they’re just pushing the brand down our throats. Which makes many hate it even more.

          • But there are still some people who enjoy the XIII series, so it’s far from “damaged”. Only for those whom didn’t enjoy it would deem it as so. I would consider that FF – as a whole – has become a weaker brand, from how some speak of the post-merger titles.

…but they’re just pushing the brand down our throats. Which makes many hate it even more.

I hardly think they are “pushing” the brand down anyone’s throat. It is the only main FF series title on the consoles at the moment (until XIV is released for PS3), so it makes sense for it to be talked about. I’m sure VII would be the one to take that title, don’t you think?

The brand would have been fine if they just stopped at XIII…

You can only say that in hindsight. At the time, anything could’ve been possible.

The games are only linked by the mythology that they share, so they shouldn’t have any real effect on how one perceives another. I would still pick up x even though y wasn’t great. Judge a game, that isn’t an actual continuity of another, on its own merit.

  • Peeka Chu

Outfit looks ridiculous. Only one area of the map seemed to be shown. Reused, reused, reused assets! My God, I think I saw one new spell effect and the SAME Behemoth monster model we’ve had since XIII. Massive frame-rate issues across the board.

This will be a used sale, if any for me. I still haven’t gotten around to finishing the rambling emo-fest that is XIII-2.

I’m honestly not trying to troll, but those are my, personal impressions. Completely underwhelmed.

    • SauriansMaster!!

combat frame rates look satisfactory to me but i can see what you mean in regards to the exploration and world

      • Peeka Chu

I don’t think that this trailer was a good idea to release for people already iffy on the series. Have a feeling that the Western media is going to pan this game. Like worse than RE: 6.

    • Congratulation on judging the framerate of a game still under development solely basing from a low quality Youtube video.

  • Raze

The moment I saw Lightning with that eye mask thing…

Suddenly think about the Dark Knight Rises…

This games name should be Lightning The Dark Queen Rises…

  • Kevin Lor

Sorry to say but all I was thinking was how them cosplayers gonna cosplay her when the game comes out lol

  • Tales_of_Master

As a guy who absolutely hated XIII and XIII-2…..I think this looks pretty interesting. I’m not sure what’s wrong with the NPCs’ walking animation. Actually all the characters in the trailer had jerky animations, but overall the game doesn’t look bad.

I was probably going to get the game even if it sucked just to see how the XIII trilogy will end, but now I’m genuinely interested. The story kind of reminds me of FFX with the whole “world ruled by religion” theme, and I’m getting a Valkyrie Profile vibe from the game as a whole.

I guess we have to wait and see how this game will turn out, but I’m defiantly more interested now.

  • Göran Isacson

I am slightly amused by how this game went from six characters, to three (practically) characters and now to just the one. Bit by bit, torn apart, we never win, but the baaattle wages on… etc.

So. In-battle paradigm shifting which gives Lightning different move-sets. Each mvoe seems mapped to one face button, and move-set load outs are probably set in some kind of menu… but I wonder if staggering and movement has been changed and we can now move in the field. Or if the only thing that’s different is how they’ve essentially changed up the game so that Lightning can be three characters and roles in one.

OR… they’ve maybe set it up so that all the characters from FFXIII have similar power-sets, and they’re ALL on Lightning-tier levels of power? Maybe? I can hope? That Sahz get’s to do something interesting again? Please?

    • Ehren Rivers

Well, whether the other characters are high-powered or not Lightning was confirmed a long time ago to be the only playable character. They’ve been saying that pretty much from the beginning. I didn’t see much in the video to support the claim I’m about to reference, but Square DID say that you would be able to move freely about the battlefield.

  • OatMatadoQuatro

She acts kind of like Raiden. Especially in this scene

  • Eh.. I feel like every entry gets worse. The actual game just looks very stale. I am all for the time-limit type gameplay (actually it’s my favorite) but it just feels stale. One thing I can say is that after all these years FF still has some banging music.

  • As expected its seems like the team need alot more time on the game, forcing a 2013 release might hold the game back quite a bit. The environments still looked quite vacant and rigit, the NPCs the same. Although its great to see that they’ve brought Lightning transversal to live, I just hope that they do the concepts they spoke about justice.

It really hasn’t helped that they used the same battle music and showed off the far too familiar behemoth.

  • DCBlackbird

so the templars took over the holy land lol? and those sunglasses….they dont go with her they just dont….

  • Angeru_Lito

Well I’m glad there are no dumb monster party members

  • ZBaksh386

I’m excited for it but I dont want there to be a 13-4 tying up Noel/serah.

I rather this game be the end all be all for the thirteen franchise, tying up everything and giving us the end of the story so we can move onto FF15 or versus 13 etc.

    • The more time we spend in Lightning’s world, the less sense it’ll make but let’s hope it doesn’t have an ending like in Mass Effect 3 and ruin Lightning’s character.

      • ZBaksh386

        true, true

  • Rihawf

    Ohhhh, the violins.

  • Jay

    And here’s my incentive to go grind in FFXIII-2 although I guess I could always youtube the ending of the game. ^^;;

  • Jeremy Barnes

so…no party members? Am I missing something?

  • Crimson_Cloud

After playingGuild Wars 2 for so long, every other town looks blocky and claustrophobic to me. But seriously, the town is really boring looking, day-night cycle or not. Lighting is as cool as ever though.

  • Tien Ron

what better way to compare her to cloud than to have her walk off a train, just like the start of ff 7…. lol

    • Tien Ron

this also *to me* has a very assassin creed feeling to it.

  • revenent hell

as a hard core hater of most aspects of the previous games I have to say this video has inspired some want in me…it looks cool and …I want it ha

  • eilegz

seriously i hope that we dont only use lightning =/

  • Yuriangels

not that to bad, as long they take out auto-battle in this game, it first day for me. (<_<)

    • eilegz

in previous game you can use manual, its not that auto battle its the only way, but i find auto battle with quick change of roles its neccesity for higher lvl bosses

  • Sergio Briceño

Any Final Fantasy game you guys recommend that isn’t 7 or XIII? I really can’t stand those two but I’ve heard that the first 6 were actually good, so any suggestions? I REALLY want to like FF.

    • daylightdies

Need a little more info. What did you not like about them? My favorite is 4, but everyone varies based on when they started the series. Usually your first exposure ends up being your favorite because you are new to the style of gaming.

      • Sergio Briceño

Ok. My first exposure was 7 and I didn’t like how immature the story and characters were during the first disc which is as far as I got. I guess I was expecting too much because all my friends told me how great that game was in their childhood and I just tried it 4 years ago when I was 20.

I tried XIII next because the creator said it was kind of a spirit successor to 7, and without any references to any other FF (aside from X, but I didn’t have a PS2) I just hoped they managed do without the bad things and keep the good ones.

But what I didn’t like about it is basically the same. I also stopped after the first disc (since I played it on the 360). Add to it the fact that you can go through most of the battles with just autobattle and the occasional paradigm shift during boss battles.

Edit: Then I decided to skip on XIII-2 because of the characters only. I don’t know much about the story but I’m guessing it isn’t any good either. And the battle system didn’t change that much to be honest. That’s basically why, before getting my hopes up for XIII-3 I want to try a good FF for a change.

And this comes from a gamer who also likes kid stories and classic RPGs like Blue Dragon and Skies of Arcadia (though both stories do pick up). I was kind of hoping you could tell me about a FF game with a mature enough story that could appeal to a gamer who has never been enamored with a FF story, maybe point me in a direction where their stories and character development took a different approach.

You might want to try FFXII…it has a much more political focused story. From what you are saying though, you probably won’t like the first two characters you are introduced to in that game. I hope you find one that you like.

I will second the XII recommendation if you want a numbered series game, But if you don’t have a PS2 that might be tough. Maybe Final Fantasy Tactics? I’ve never really been completely enamored with a FF story, it is more of a full package deal.

Yeah, I don’t think I can get a PS2 anytime soon. But thanks for the suggestion. I’ve also heard a lot of good things about FF Tactics and at least it’s on PSX.

Chrono Trigger. Its not final fantasy but its a great RPG. Especially since you said you liked blue dragon.

X is the best one IMO. And it’s (supposed to be) getting an HD release on PS3 and Vita or so they said at TGS 2011… -_-

IV, VI, and X are probably the ones the most popular besides those.
VIII and IX both have massive followings too but I haven’t played IX yet and I thought VIII was trash.
