Final Fantasy V “And More” Coming To iOS Devices

By Ishaan . December 20, 2012 . 8:55am

Now that Final Fantasy IV DS has been ported to iOS, it’s time for the next game—Final Fantasy V. But wait! There is no 3D remake of Final Fantasy V yet. Regardless, Square have teased an iOS version of Final Fantasy V “and more” in this trailer for FFIV:

So, what’s the deal? Are Square going to port an older version of Final Fantasy V to iOS devices? Or is the remake headed straight to iOS instead of being developed for a dedicated gaming portable device first?

When we last asked Square Enix about remakes of Final Fantasy V and VI back in 2010, Square Enix’s Shinji Hashimoto shared with us that the company was taking a wait and see approach.

“As you saw from Nintendo’s press conference yesterday, there is new hardware coming out,” Hashimoto said to us after the Nintendo 3DS reveal. “We knew that was coming. We had to make decisions understanding that there were hardware changes in the near future and where want to put our resources.”

When we asked if that meant remakes of Final Fantasy V and VI were headed to the Nintendo 3DS, Hashimoto laughed and replied: “No decision has been made. Rather than creating [Final Fantasy] V or VI for the current DS we want to take a look to see how 3DS does, how it evolves, and then make a decision.”

    Its either 3 things

    1) ios ports of the gba V and VI ( which would annoy me because I want them on 3ds)

    2) 3ds/ios multiplat V and VI enhanced sprite remakes

    3) square trolling the fans like usual and doing something nobdy will eventually care about

    • ( `Д´)ノ)`ν゜)

      $50 on 3

    • Peeka Chu

Yup #3. iOS exclusive priced at $35

  • Spicydicey

I wonder if SE will release a 2D revamp of FF5+6, similar to what they did with 1,2 and 4 on the PSP, but in HD.
In any case I don’t look forward to a £15/$18 price tag

    • $36598391

it would have to be on Vita for HD, PSP can’t do that sadly

  • I feel like Bravely Default was more or less the answer. Not a bad one. But only a portion of an exceptional one.

  • KingGunblader

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them put the GBA versions of V and VI on iOS. However, I’d really like full remakes with HD sprites / 3D graphics.

    • And make the characters look like their art or have Bartz in his Dissidia attire and make Faris’s job outfits less feminine. In fact, Mime should have the classic outfits. For Final Fantasy VI, get rid of Celes’s swimsuit and make Terra wear her Dissidia clothes with blonde hair.

      • alixraen

I actually prefer the in game sprite designs to Amano’s designs, call me heathen.

      • ChocolateFudge

        Blonde hair?

  • Yuriangels

Does anyone else have the feel that its just a other social game. (*sigh*)

  • Charles

    Final Fantasy V

    coming to iOS

  • Monsley

FFV is one of my favourites so I’d love to see an enhanced remake!
Just… don’t make it iOS exclusive, SE. Please. (FFV on the 3DS would be great. Just saying.)

    • Peeka Chu

Resolutions are too different and they’d have to work something out for the 2nd screen. I don’t know if they would bother. Honestly, I’m almost being strongarmed into iOS gaming. If all the good portable JRPG franchises end up there, I’ll have to cave. I tried iOS stuff for about a year, but the quality just isn’t up to par, certain exceptions aside.

      • Pockystix

well, easiest way to convince them to stop making quick ports to iOS. . . stop buying them. You don’t have to cave into this.

Also, DQVII never was made for two screens, but the full on remake is looking fantastic

      • Elvick

Um, they put TWEWY on iOS and that took removing an entire screen. A screen that actually had importance, in story and in gameplay.

  • Endy Operin

That’s quite a confusion news. On the one hand, trailer shows the old FF5 logo (FF4 DS logo has been altered, although in the case of FF3 DS it doesn’t have almost any changes), the development of proper remake for iOS ignoring other platforms… On the other hand, the fact that FF5 was mentioned in the trailer of its remade predecessor, also there is a considerable interest from Square to mobile devices.
Well, let’s see what they’re planning.

  • Charmchar

I just hope they don’t port it over with a few extras and charge 18 bucks for it. Please Square Enix price it reasonable, maybe 8 dollars :)

    • Tien Ron

      i wouldn’t even put final fantasy v for 8 dollars/pounds…. that’s way to cheap

  • Pokahontas McGuigan

its not like SE dosent know what theyre gonna put out, they should just outright tell us if its new or old content.

  • Well this is one way to celebrate FFV’s 20th anniversary. With an obvious port no less. I suppose people have more options to play the original FFV.

    • Nameless App 1989

      25th, actually

      • Endy Operin

        20th, actually

        • TiredOfMyOldUsername

          It’s 25th…
First Final fantasy was released in 1987…

          • TheSwordUser

            But it’s 20th for Final Fantasy V specifically. December 6, 1992.

          • TiredOfMyOldUsername

Yeah… i saw it after i posted my comment that he said FFV anniversary and not FF anniversary… my mistake.

      • For FFV? That released in 1992.

  • I wonder if Square will charge you for each of the Job Classes?

    • David Swink

That almost made me fall out of my chair. well played.

    • Niko Sandwich

Happened upon this article again, saw your comment, and laughed, since two months into the future from then your comment becomes even more painfully ironic.

  • AkuLord3

Good SqaureEnix…u finally found out how to count after 4…let’s hope we can get to six…also be nice if you could put them on every thing like with 4~

  • AzuNo17

Unless there’s exclusive content I’ll stick to hard copies for this franchise.

  • MasterHiei

oh look, SE making another stupid decision

    • Banned. You’ve been warned before.

      • ChocolateFudge

Why? It IS a stupid decision.

  • scratchbach

Awesome. V is my absolute favorite FF, so woohoo!

  • Cyberjin

if it comes in 3D, then i hope they also put it on PsVita or Android :)

  • Lima99

I just want remake of VI, but seriously for iOs? It’s so uncomfortable to play and the ipod/phone gets hot really quickly

  • Göran Isacson

Okay. Okay. Oookay. So FFV gets mentioned in the same breath as the enhanced 3D version of FFIV. This makes my little heart all pitter-patter with excitement and my little mind all zinger-zapper with possibilities and dreams. 3D FFV? Voice acting, new graphics, the whole shebang? It could be… quite fantastic.

But what if it is iOS only? What if it is simply the DS version? What if it is a SOCIAL GAME?! Okay that last one is silly. But there are so many ways to interpret this, so many ways it can go, that I simply do not know what to do. What I do believe, however, is that if it IS a full on 3D remake I do not think it will be for ONLY iOS. Square are port-happy maniacs: if they can port IV to practically every format known to man, I think it’s safe to assume they’d bring their new, fancy, shiny 3D FFV to 3DS at the very least. But, that is once again presuming this will be a 3D-remake. Best to curb ones enthusiasm and speculation, at least for the moment…

  • since it’s not like ff III or IV where they already make 3D remake, so i can guess it’s gonna like FFIV: CC

  • Pockystix

    oh good

more porting of one of my favorite FF games

no offense square, but I’ll stick with my GBA copy

it would be nice if they would do what Enix is doing to DQVII

  • David Swink

They better not remake FFV and FFVI in those horrid graphics that they did for III and IV. seriously, the sprite versions look WAY better

  • RablaAndrews

Hnnngggg VI on iPad 2 Retina… 2D or 3D, whatever they decide to run with is going to look beautiful

  • Avi

I suspect that FFV will be ported to the Final Fantasy Dimensions engine. If so, that gives me hope for an FFVI port within my lifetime.

  • David Holbrook

“No decision has been made. Rather than creating [Final Fantasy] V or VI for the current DS we want to take a look to see how 3DS does, how it evolves, and then make a decision.”

Ok, that seriously sounds promising!! To me, that sounds like remakes are definite and they’re just debating on a platform.

As to the iOS, I actually hope they port these remakes to it. I may be in the minority here, but I have really enjoyed the iOS forms of all the final fantasy games so far (playing IV right now). With the exception of War of the Lions (which is way too hard to control with my fingers on my tiny iPod screen), I’ve found the iOS system to be quite enjoyable. It’s everything a portable system should be in my opinion, and I look forward to the remakes in the near future!
