By Ishaan . December 21, 2012 . 7:40pm

Square Enix have shared a trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII at Jump Festa. Some of you may recall that this trailer leaked out earlier during the week, but this a slightly remixed version with different music.  Check it out below:

Additionally, Square have shared a second video titled “The Final Journey of Lightning,” which, it turns out, is the original trailer that leaked out earlier in the week. You can watch that below:

Additionally, we also have some new screenshots of the game, which you can find below. If you need to get caught up on Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is, you can do that here.

  • Hollowkoopa

Wait does this confirmed another Assassin’s Creed DLC costume?

    • Hidayat246

Actually No, maybe not yet (wait for SE post-release insane DLC)

  • Brutal2d

i don’t even know what the hell is going on with this series anymore.

    • Kaihedgie

So why do you still care? Why are you here?

      • Brutal2d

Did I forget question mark? Here, let me rephrase: What the hell is going on with this series?

        • Wait what

Something wonderful. If you don’t like it, feel free to stop paying attention.

          • Brutal2d

That did not answer a single thing. Do you even know what is going on anymore?

          • Wait what

Are you asking for a synopsis of the FFXIII story? Because it’s not that hard of a story to get. If you finished XIII-2, you should know very well what is going on. Anybody who actually likes these games are well aware of what is going on.

          • Brutal2d

Just because they said this is happening does not mean I understand what is happening. There is a great big difference between that.

          • M’iau M’iaut

This question has been asked and answered more than once. One of the many 13 wikis out there might go into a bit more detail. If it’s questioning the course of the story and why, all I can say is the series has been more esoteric with its narrative style really from VIII on. Some things make sense other things are perhaps best explained by the differences in Japanese story telling.

          • Brutal2d

don’t you dare pull that card, I have been able to grasp most of what japan does up to this point.

          • Wait what

Dude you really need to chill out. You are the one creating all the hostility. I don’t know what’s so hard about you not playing these games if you don’t care about them.

          • Brutal2d

How many times do I have to tell you I played both FF13 AND FF13-2? How many more ways could I possibly make it well known and through to you I PLAYED BOTH

          • M’iau M’iaut

Sir, this needs to stop now. Very clearly, what has been described in some detail is not enough. Unless someone comes in with a different take on the story itself, the baiting back and forth can not continue.

          • Brutal2d

i’m not baiting anything, all I did was ask a simple question. Apparently saying they don’t know is a tall order now? Yes, people have been detailed…if I didn’t already play the game. The fact there is a third game to this story seems completely redundant on what I’m suppose to be experiencing. The side stories of 13, the main stories of 13. None of it is adding up. I merely said “I don’t even know what the hell is happening in this series anymore”. I’m not making these people reply, they’re doing that on their own yet I’m the one you target? For asking a subjective question?

          • Wait what

Yes, saying we don’t know IS a tall order. Because we DO know. We know what is going on in this series and we care about it. We want to see it continue and are excited about this conclusion. And you asked many times for people to “answer” your “question”, don’t act like we just decided to harass you now. We answered your question in several ways. You said you didn’t understand the story at one point, so we explained it. Then you said you don’t get why they are making these games, so we said it’s for the fans and the money. Then you said you don’t know why you should care, and we said if you don’t like the games then you shouldn’t, so don’t bother.

I’m sorry you don’t like these answers, but we aren’t going to join you in your disdain for this series. You didn’t get the answer you want, but there is no reason for you to throw a fit over it. Honestly, you need to just deal with it and relax a bit, man. It’s just a video game.

          • And that’s why you fail.

          • Wait what

Nobody is saying you didn’t play them, man. Your question has been answered countless times, yet you ask why you should care. If you don’t care, then you shouldn’t. Plain and simple.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Calm it down. Weird tales are weird tales and will always be a bit weird. This might be one best moved to the Open Thread, where you can give a bit more detail about what is clear and what isn’t. We need to keep this thread on the topic of the video itself.

          • Brutal2d

we don’t need to discuss about what we saw on the very same page in the comment section that’s for the thing we saw? then why is the comment section here?

        • Kaihedgie

You didn’t answer the questions: Why are you still here? Why do you care?

          • Brutal2d

I clearly want to know what the hell is going on, what part of that are you not grasping?

          • Wait what

Play the two games that came before it. I’m not going to spoil them in the comments of a video. Some people still haven’t gotten to them yet.

          • Brutal2d

But I did, I still am not getting why Lightning and Hope are in this thousands of years old and have to have yet another game of unimportant events.

          • Wait what

I’m not sure how you could finish XIII-2 and not get what is going on here, but fine.

Time ended when Etro died and the two worlds became one. When all that happened the world got fucked, this world is the end result. That’s why it looks, you know, weird and similar to Valhalla of XIII-2. This all happened in that game. XIII-2 ended with Lightning in Crystal Stasis, and here she says she has awoken 13 days before the end of the world. We aren’t 100% if when time as a concept ended if people stopped dying of age or not, so that may be why Hope is here. If aging still happens, then Hope could be here the same way he traveled hundreds of years into the future in the last game.

          • Foofin Around

Lightning is around because she was in a crystal slumber. Hope is around because everyone stopped aging after Chaos was released on the world.
            *End Spoilers*

            Hope that helps some. (^_^)

          • Brutal2d

I already knew that, I need to know why we’re suppose to care anymore at this point.

          • Wait what

Because you like the series and want to see more of it, and get a good conclusion for the characters and the world. If that doesn’t apply to you, then you aren’t supposed to care, which goes back to the question first asked of you, why do you still care? If you don’t like it, move on. Others do.

          • Foofin Around

Why we as fans are supposed to care? Well…. I guess that depends on the fan, really. Some of us want to see the conclusion to the story. Others just really like the world and/or battle systems that have been created with the 13 saga. Some just like the whole package. I can’t really tell you why you should care, because caring about something is such a subjective matter.

As to why the characters care, that is to be revealed. We can assume Hope and Light care because they’ve already fought for the salvation of their world on multiple occasions. Beyond that, we have to wait and see.

… So yeah, I really do hope you can find an answer to your question somewhere in all of that. (^_^)

          • Coeurl

It sounds to me like he’s a fan. A fan that’s confused by the direction that the series has taken.

          • Brutal2d

            atleast someone here gets it.

          • Kaihedgie

A fan would kinda go ahead and read up stuff about things he doesn’t understand, not ask “what the hell is going on”.

I don’t know really, but asking a question like this won’t give you an answer and dwelling upon it won’t solve anything.

          • Brutal2d

I played both games. I’ve stated this already. i’m still not getting it why this is being a thing. Why this is happening and why they can’t just move on from lightning to the other 13 projects they’ve had since the beginning.

          • Wait what

Different teams, genius. The only XIII project that hasn’t been released is Versus XIII, which was ALWAYS by a different team. The whole point of having different XIII games was that they were all different creative teams interpreting the core mythos in their own way. The fact that the Lightning games have three entries while Type-0 only has one and Versus has none is the result of the other developers doing other things, not these games being made. Try looking into things a bit more before you turn these comments into a soapbox over your dislike of a couple of video games.

          • Brutal2d

you’re pretty grumpy. I’m aware different devs are making them. That’s kind of a no brainer. If you’re not going to answer my actual question, stay out of it. Pretty simple if you ask me.

          • Wait what

Your question has been answered several times, by me and others. If you are asking about the story, we told you everything needed to know to understand. If you are just complaining about these games being made in general, we answered that too, people like the games and they sell. The only reason you have for continuing this is to just be a jerk or try and troll. Give it up.

          • Brutal2d

but it wasn’t answered, you still haven’t told me your take on it. no reason to label me as a troll just because you don’t get what I’m asking.

          • M’iau M’iaut

I thank you for your initial post explaining things. Please lets try and back things off from a personal standpoint. Thanks.

          • OathkeeperSoraXIII

why’s it happening? seriously, did you not see the ending for XIII-2? where the world got taken over by chaos and then time stopped flowing and Serah died. and fang and vanilles crystals got saved, which will no doubt play a part in this game.

          • Brutal2d

See? SEE WHAT THIS PERSON JUST DID? HE GAVE ME A SUBJECTIVE STATEMENT ON THEIR OWN TAKE OF THE STORY. Apparently that’s a hard thing to do here. Thank you so much for actually taking the time and actually not being rude about it. And I agree and yet I’m thinking there is a point why they haven’t been awakened yet.

          • Wait what

Dude, three people brought up the time ending and crystal stasis thing before, myself included. I don’t even know what you are going on about anymore.

          • Brutal2d

“I don’t even know what you are going on about anymore”
            Oh the irony…

          • AnimusVox

You’re not making sense man! D:
I know what you mean though, the direction for this particular series is getting pretty FUBAR.

          • I think you just hate XIII in general. That’s why you said what is going with the series.

          • OathkeeperSoraXIII

glad I could be of assistance lol ^^

          • You clearly don’t know what’s going with Square-Enix. XIV’s bad first debut caused other HD games to be delayed to assure the quality and the XIII team were still together to make a sequel to XIII. Square wants to re-manage the franchise while still trying to make money for the fiscal year or whatever.

          • Coeurl

‘a fan would…’? I think a fan would do a lot of things. Including but not limited to asking why the producers/directors decided to make such a drastic change in the story. Where exactly do you go to read up on why someone thought something was a good idea?

          • Brutal2d

you’re the only one who gets it here that isn’t a defensive butthurt fanboy/girl

          • M’iau M’iaut

We can do without the asides. More than one poster here explained the story situation. Even to the point of spoilers. Please move on for the night, thanks.

          • Brutal2d

But nothing was answered…so no one actually knows?

          • Ask the developers themselves if you’re really THAT curious but go attacking them unless you want security to throw you out the building.

          • Kaihedgie

            That’s what interviews are for

          • Coeurl

So the fans arent allowed to question because eventually someone will do an interview? I thought this spot was for discussion?

          • Kaihedgie

This game already generates a lot of hate just by existing. I don’t think a whole lot of people are interested in a discussion so much as they want to complain about what they’re seeing

          • Coeurl

I’d see your point if he was actually trying to stir up hate.

          • Kaihedgie

Look how long this thread has gone

          • Coeurl

Yeah, and not one reply with hate for the game. This is dragging on though so i’ll bid you a good evening.

          • Brutal2d

which I haven’t done, at all. I merely asked a simple question. And while this has gone on, someone could just say ‘we don’t know what is going on anymore” even the mod is saying to stop discussing. I can’t have a conversation because you don’t like it yet breaks no rules?

          • Wait what

Except we DO know what is going on, and have EXPLAINED IT TO YOU. You just want us to agree with you, which we don’t. You won’t accept our answers because you just say “but why should I care”. You ARE a troll just stirring up hate.

          • That’s Daniel D in a nutshell.

          • M’iau M’iaut

I think you’ve made your point, Kaihedge — let’s all move on from this tonight.

          • Kaihedgie

I wish it was that simple >:

          • Brutal2d

if it was that simple I wouldn’t be here for as long as I have.

          • You just want to convert XIII’s fans into being a angry towards XIII as you. That’s all you want.

          • FFmax

I think his question is pretty legit. All this time stuff really did come out of nowhere though. The story got even more confusing for a lot of people.

          • Wait what

It’s not really out of nowhere anymore. The entire plot of XIII-2 was explaining the time travel. It’s not that hard to understand and it made for a great story. We’ve also explained all there needs to be explained regarding the story already.

          • Lorenzo Frost Sabre Miranda

He’s still here because must’ve been a big fan of the series. Same reason why he cares.

          • Brutal2d

people rather bare their fangs and bark and defend something that is happening regardless who’s angry about it or not. So I’m not grasping the hostility here.

          • But people ARE barking their fangs towards the idea that people actually like Final Fantasy XIII.

          • CrimsonalCore

Does it really matter why is he here and care?

        • FitzpatrickPhillips

It’s evolving and trying new things. I know, its horrible.

          • Brutal2d

that wasn’t even close to what I was asking.

    • FFmax

Do you mean with the story or the general direction of this series?

      • Brutal2d

both actually. I don’t get the point.

        • FFmax

Well I think it’s more about money than anything else. I mean as long the game is entertaining I don’t really care, but yeah I’m starting to have a few complaints as well. Almost all of Square Enix games have gotten crazy with their plots lately.

        • Wait what

The point? To please the fans and make some money. People liked XIII and it sold like crazy, so they made a sequel. People liked the sequel and while it didn’t sell as well as the first game it still sold very well and is the best received and selling direct sequel in the franchise’s history. Thus, they made a third game to end Lightning’s story and bring the trilogy to a close. The game has fans so they made more of it. If you don’t like it, tough, get over it. There are plenty of other video games in the world for you to enjoy.

As for the story, I wrote a spoilery post for you in that regards already.

    • amagidyne

      This thread got very odd.

  • surakian

I want to see Lightning in Conner’s outfit. Thank you Siliconera for creating the visual with that title.

  • Nee Nee

The horrible frame rates ruined this trailer for me.

  • Looks like you have to actually press the command to do it then rather wait for the ATG to fill-up… interesting… and I wonder how the new paradigm shift is going to work out. I can’t wait :3

    • Foofin Around

What the new battle system looks like it might be is:
You can choose a set of moves to have at you disposal for each paradigm you create, and you can switch between each of the paradigms/movesets. To me, it looks like magic and attacks are no longer held to different roles. Which is so cool if that’s the case. (^_^)

      • Yeah, I picked that up too. That is a pretty interesting system they have. Thought I will miss the “job” like part of it. I just wonder how it will work out. Gonna have to wait to find out ahah. :)

        • Foofin Around

Yep, we’ll just have to wait and see. Though it definitely does look like it’ll be exciting/interesting when we get to play the game. (^_^)

  • epy

Hmmm… nope. Still can’t get over this new outfit. I hope they let me change it quickly. I might even pay for a DLC costume, something I would NEVER do normally.

Square-Enix: Yessss, all according to plan.

    • Wait what

It’s confirmed her outfit is customizable and changeable, as a core part of the gameplay. This has been known from the beginning.

      • epy

        That’s great. Good to know.

  • FFmax

How in the world does this even remotely look anything like Assassins Creed? Is it Lightning’s costume or what? Because don’t see her randomly stealth killing people. And I’m pretty sure that people wanted more people than just Lightning playable. You can’t just put 90% of the cast on the bench like that. I don’t know about this, Light’s cool and all but the strength of a Final Fantasy game usually comes from having a balanced party.

    • Go2hell66

the costume? jumping on stuff? killing things?

assassins creed if i ever saw it

      • FFmax

But she was already doing all that stuff in the first game. This just feels like weird advertising now.

      • Wait what

Are you being sarcastic? I really can’t tell. Because Lightning’s outfit looks nothing like the hooded robe of Assasin’s Creed, and that series was nowhere near the inventor of jumping and killing. I really don’t see where this comparison is coming from, other than people always wanting to compare one series to another.

        • Go2hell66

White+red+cape+popped collar , dunno how you can’t see it especially when look at it from the back

and i never said assassins creed invented jumping and killing when you put all the factors together its pretty hard to not compare the two.

          • Wait what

Lightning had a white outfit with a red cape and a popped collar in the first XIII, nobody said she looked like she was from Assassin’s Creed then. because she didn’t, and she still doesn’t.

Also, yes, it is hard to not compare the two. Because games have done jumping and killing together since the beginning.

          • Go2hell66

when i said “compare the two” i meant FFXIII Lightning Returns and assassins creed, not jumping and killing

and to be fair there wasn’t nearly as much jumping in ffxiii as their was in this trailer, the setting didn’t look neary as similar as this one does to previous assassins creed games, and that cape/scarf didn’t have any white on it either.

          • Wait what

But my point is that jumping and killing has been around since way before AC, so why compare this to AC like AC started it? And I’m sorry, but I don’t see how her outfit looks anything like AC just because it has a white cape.

          • Sergio Briceño

            Always love a Mario reference.

      • Herok♞

the costume is square being ridiculous as usual, jumping on stuff has been done since mario and killing things happens in most games.

        • Brutal2d

          mario dlc confirmed?

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      Assassins Fantasy

  • Wait what

Seriously? Looks like Assassins Creed? No, it doesn’t. At all. Not the gameplay nor her outfit. That’s the sort of dumb comparison I’d expect from a youtube comment.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

Lightning up, It was a joke,

      • Wait what

Doesn’t sound like one to me.

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

Better get used to it. because every blog and forum I seen that was talking it, said it looks like Assassin’s Creed

          • Wait what

How is that a joke, then? if everyone is saying it, without a punchline, then it sounds like they are serious. To which I again ask, how does it look like it?

          • ErhmagerdWerds

I took it that they just meant it looked like you could climb and jump and freely explore the town more than the previous games which had set jump points and a lot of false “open” environments that really were just a small open area with a lot of “oops cant go there!” boundaries.

    • MrRobbyM

It’s just a joke…calm down. But I can sorta see it with the climbing and jumping around and what not. The guy preaching the word of God, or that’s what he seems to be doing is also reminiscent or Assassin’s Creed.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        its a Meme now…

      • Wait what

Games have had jumping and climbing mechanics way before Assassin’s Creed, and this looks nothing like the ones found in that game. If you have to compare this to something, I’d say it looks more like something out of Tomb Raider or Mirror’s Edge.

And nobody was preaching the word of God, Hope was explaining the city worships one. But even if someone was preaching, that’s also not something exclusive to AC, it’s sort of a real thing.

        • MrRobbyM

I meant the people gathering around the guy in the funky lookin’ robe.

About the jumping and climbing, yeah, obviously. But the way the town is set up, I can kinda see how some people would see it.

I don’t see a reason to get all worked up over some opinions.

          • Wait what

I just think it’s lame to compare this to Assassin’s Creed just because it has some climbing mechanics set in a city. I don’t understand the need to compare series over minor similarities in general, though, it’s not like this is the first time I’ve complained about it.

          • MrRobbyM

Well, I’m not a fan of AC games, but I wouldn’t get so worked up over it. AC is a very popular series and so is FF, so comparisons between them are bound to happen even if they have the slightest similarities.

          • Wait what

I’m not really worked up over it. I’ve just been trying to say I find the comparison stupid, but I wanted to say it nicer than that.

          • Ehren Rivers

For the record, that’s a murder scene. If you pause the video, you see two soldiers/guards standing next to the guy in the funny robe and a woman slumped on the ground with a long knife/short sword in her back. That’s why those people are gathering there.

          • MrRobbyM

…wow. Good eye there.I would have totally missed that.

        • While many games have climbing abilities, those white capes she wear and the context makes it particulary resemble to Assassin’s Creed a quite bit, can’t blame em.

But eh, with that they are not implying they are copying AC or anything, just a funny resemblance.

Edit: Hmm… although the title maay lead to a misunderstanding about the gameplay, it’s nothing like AC so I guess I can getcha why you’re a tad bit angered.

  • anjohinc

As much as I like Lightning, I wish that this game had more playable party members…

    • FFmax

I know right? Sure I wanted Lightning to be playable more in XIII-2, but I sure as hell didn’t ask for them to get rid of everybody else. If this was like spinoff/prequel like Crisis Core I could understand, but this is their third game. I was expecting a boatload of people of people to playable along with Lightning.

      • MrRobbyM

Same. I would have probably played FFXIII-2 if Light was a more permanent party member but I also don’t want to play solely as her.

    • Anime10121

Agreed, I like Lightning, but I much more prefer some of her companions like : Serah, Noel, Hope (XIII-2 version), Sazh, Vanille and Fang. All of them imo are MUCH more interesting than Light ever was to me.

      • LightZero

I agree. She is a cool character, but she as not as interesting to me in comparison to Noel, Hope (FFXIII-2), Sazh, and Fang.

  • I don’t know what they were thinking putting this trailer out with that choppy framerate. That tells me that this game is probably really heavily outsourced. I wonder if Tri-Ace are helping out with it again, like they did with XIII-2.

That also makes one wonder what Square’s internal FF team is up to. Already working on whatever Agni’s Philosophy will turn out to be?

    • Wait what

Square released trailers for A Realm Reborn with choppy framerate as well, which was not reflective of the game itself. I’d question more what their trailer and video people are doing, rather than jumping to conclusions about out-sourcing.

      • True, but the XIII games have also been seeing visual downgrades with each iteration, which means that something is definitely going on.

It might just be that they’re trying not to take a thousand years to finish these like with the original XIII, but you can definitely tell the difference.

Also, given the drop in sales from XIII to XIII-2, I find it hard to imagine that they’re dedicating their internal resources to these sequels.

        • MrRobbyM

And I gotta point out that they did recently say that other projects have been put on hold or that the progress has been slowed due to some game I forget which I assume to be FFXIV. So maybe they’re trying to speed things up? Who knows.

          • It could certainly be that members of the XIII team have been moved over to XIV to help out, too, yeah.

        • Wait what

Well, I do think it has to do with them not wanting the games to take forever, but I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s a “downgrade”, really. XIII-2 was still beautiful, just not always AS beautiful. As for the sales drop of XIII-2, that’s to be expected as it’s a direct sequel. XIII-2 is still the best selling direct sequel in the series, moreso than X-2 or any of the VII spin-offs, so it’s still a good seller.

          • Prithivi

I’m afraid it is not the best selling direct sequel. FF X-2 ( +5.000.000) sold way more than FF XIII-2 ( +2.500.000 -PS3 and 360 combined-). And even Crisis Core has sold more than XIII-2, more than 3.000.000 I think.

          • LightZero

I don’t remember Crisis Core selling that much. I’m also pretty sure FFXIII-2 is probably around 3 million LTD at this point. 2.5+ was from a few months ago. It’s not the best selling FF sequel, but it definitely did well for a sequel to a very divisive game. That and Deus Ex was the game that made a good profit for SE. Plus there is DLC.

          • Wait what

Fair enough regarding X-2. I rechecked my source, and I misread it as being the initial sales of X-2, not the overall sales. Still, XIII-2 is the second-best selling direct sequel, and still an overall success. Especially considering it took much less to make than the first XIII did, it was still overall a profit-making game.

          • badmoogle

“As for the sales drop of XIII-2, that’s to be expected as it’s a direct sequel. XIII-2 is still the best selling direct sequel in the series, moreso than X-2 or any of the VII spin-offs, so it’s still a good seller.”

            Um how about no?
Please try to get your facts straight next time.

          • Hidayat246

You are so much STUPID fanboy XIII
X-2 4 million unit sales compared to 3 million unit sales XIII-2??? and u still call the best selling direct sequel????

            U mad bro!!!!!!!!! :-P

          • Wait what

You are the height of human class and intelligence.

    • MrRobbyM

I’m thinking so too. Both trailers wreaked of low-budgetness. The editing, the ugly font, the choppy framerate. Aside from that, the town itself looks kind of..ugly. But that might be due to the game still being in early development.

      But still..

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        Town seems a bit bland

        • MrRobbyM

Yeah, seriously. I’m hoping it’s just because it’s still in early development, I mean, the train station looked pretty bad. With some areas looking like their were textures missing.

          • Wait what

I dunno, I like it. It’s a very unique and different design for a city, which fits considering what this world is. I’d be more disappointed if it was a normal looking futuristic city. I like checker-board fantasy setting.

          • MrRobbyM

I think the structure itself is nice, it’s more a problem with all the dull tones. It’s way too brown and boring. The most color I saw was the red railing that Light grabbed on to when she jumped. Maybe they’re trying to go for a depressing feeling for the town, but even then, you can still make that look good.

          • Wait what

I didn’t see much brown, but a lot of gray. I dunno, I think it just comes down to stylistic tastes in this regard. I like everything we’ve seen so far, myself.

          • MrRobbyM

Could just be my monitor then lol. But yeah, the funny thing is, it comes off really well in the screen shots but the trailer just looks completely dull to me.

          • You really like to bash XIII for anything new it includes, don’t you?

          • MrRobbyM

How, in any way, was I bashing it? I’m actually looking forward to the game. All I said was that the train station looked bad due to it possibly being in early development. I really doubt SE will leave the framerate, NPC animations and overall design as it is now.

        • Don’t you dare say bland. It’s a bad word. Bland is associated with dull American suburbia, stock photos and Mathew Broderick. At least being unlikeable leaves a sense of impact.

    • LynxAmali

      Oh god. Tri-Ace.

If that’s the case, I really hope the frame rate doesn’t end up as bad as Danball Senki W.

      • Hey, don’t insult Tri-Ace. They didn’t ask to be reduced to a lowly outsource company. They should be busy working on crazy stuff like Valkyrie Profile 2 and Resonance of Fate. :(

        • Sergio Briceño

AND They did say last year that they would try to make more original IPs and start publishing their own games. I don’t remember where I read that, but if it means more RoF… =3

          • RoF is owned by Sega, sadly, so that one’s a dead duck. :(

          • Sergio Briceño

            I’ll start operation-send-sega-love-letters-for-RoF then.

        • badmoogle

You mean VP3…(and if we count Covenant of the Plume then it’s VP4)

    • pressUPfororanges

I don’t know what they were thinking by showing only one, monotonous place. When the screen split in three to show the same basic town in all 3 pictures I couldn’t help but chuckle.

As someone who enjoyed FFXIII (and has yet to play XIII-2), I seriously hope there’s much more to it than what we’re being shown.

      • I find it funny at first, but I think it was supposed to show the games’ day/night system by showing the motion but at different times.

        • pressUPfororanges

I know, but it doesn’t even seem all that different or interesting – at least not enough to show up in a trailer.

My guess is the other areas/events aren’t complete enough, so they decided to fill the trailer with nothing but the basics of the town. It probably would’ve been better if they it a subtitle – something like “Inside LRFFXIII: *insert town’s name here*” – instead of making it the main trailer.

          • I see what you mean Since it doesn’t show hot this system plays a part in the overall gameplay.

            Yeah, that would’ve been better.

    • Agreed. I’m not sure what to think of the battle system and environments either. It doesn’t feel very “Final Fantasy”-y to me.

I’m pinning all my hopes on Agni’s Philosophy for now. That footage at E3 2012 blew me away.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

This saddens me, deeply. Whats going on with Square?

    • Brutal2d

I asked this question about the series and the only reply I was told was ‘something wonderful’ so in other words, no clue.

      • Wait what

That’s because this game looks awesome. If you guys don’t like it, then don’t play it. Simple as that.

        • Guest

          enjoy it

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

*sigh* felt like SE been soulless for a while

  • Travis Nolen

every time i hear about this (with the “certain people available to talk to at certain times” and the 24 hour clock system) i always get the persona vibe. now they add the free run style look to it. square what are you doing???
i mean i love persona, assassins creed and final fantasy….BUT NOT ALL TOGETHER!!!!

  • riceisnice

I just… Uhh… Okay. I offer nothing but words of encouragement for Square Enix. Make a good game guys! However, my money will be making the real decision.

  • Foofin Around

You know, the outfit actually kind of makes sense. Semi-spoilers about to ensue.

So we know from FF13 that after people awake from their crystal slumber, they are given back the clothes they were wearing before said slumber. We saw this when Vanille and Fang woke up in the Bodhum vestige. They were nude in crystal slumber, but their clothes gradually came back as the crystal faded away. We also see this at the end of 13, when Lightning’s clothes come back when she is released from her crystal slumber.

Fast-forward to 13-2, and Lightning’s original clothes are replaced by Etro. She is given this suit of body armor, and some lovely looking feathers that flow down her left thigh. So we don’t know exactly where the original outfit went, but we can kind of assume that the same thing happened as when someone goes into the crystal slumber. Wherever the clothes go during that time, that’s where Lightning’s original clothes went.

Which is fine and dandy until Lightning is pulled into the slumber a second time. This time, the armor of Etro is taken into whatever void the person’s clothes are kept in. So Lightning has 2 sets of clothes laying in whatever divine closet she has assigned to her for when she gets out of her slumber.

Now let’s look at her new outfit. It has a similar body armor piece, and the flowing feathers are replaced by a longer version of her original coat. The new outfit is a mish mash of her old one, but the armor came out in the wrong color: black, not silver.

This does make some sense though. With the goddess dead, whatever magic that dresses the person in slumber back up may have been messed with. As such, Lightning’s two outfits were both pulled out of the divine closet, and they were combined so that nothing would be leftover. A magic mess-up is basically what happened there, but she doesn’t need her clothes to be held for her anymore, so it fits.

But why is the armor piece black(with some red now that I think of the shield)? Well, it’s symbolic. Of what? Of 2 things: the death of Etro (black) and the release of Chaos (red). Death is almost always associated with black (sometimes white, but that’s a different story). We also saw that Chaos is shown by the color red when we saw Caius’s heart of Chaos. It GLOWED red. Edit: She also had a red cape in the original outfit, so that may also be another part of the mish-mash.

    *Semi-Spoilers End*

I know, the outfit looks a little odd. But stopping to think about it, the outfit actually makes sense. At least it does to me. If it doesn’t for you, then they’ve already confirmed customizable outfits. (^_^)

    • KingGunblader

…i don’t think I’ve ever seen such a detailed analysis of clothing. Ever.

      • Foofin Around

Well, it seems to be an issue with some people, so I just started thinking about it. The analysis you see is the product of that thinking. (;^_^)

So what do you think about the whole outfit thing? /Genuinely curious

        • Rafael Budzinski

…to the truth, I really think they just threw new clothes because this is a new game. I can’t imagine they thinking so hard on a reason of doing so. Of course, maybe there is a reason for the new outfit, but I can’t believe they thought so hard on it as you…8D

        • KingGunblader

Well I’ve already said that I’m not really a fan of it. I like Lightning’s costume in XIII because it was simple, yet could still provide some sexiness for those wanted it (re: the short skirt). It was classy and cool.

This is just the opposite. It’s just so… obnoxious.

    • Wait what

Well said and well put. I do believe you are onto something.

      • Foofin Around

Why thank you for the nice reply. I tried to think of something that would make some sort of sense, and that’s what happened. Glad to know that some people have at least enjoyed the thought. (^_^)

    • QBninja

That is really thoughtful thinking right there

    • Sergio Briceño

Or maybe she just wanted to change into a yet more revealing costume.

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

the AC comments are funny, I saw on DA a picture of the new lightning with a hidden blade which was funny. gameplay wise it looks nothing like it though. I saw lightning climb a ladder and swing down a pole, the pole section reminded me more of the flowmotion stuff from KH3D. other than the costume vaguely resembling an AC outfit, It looks barely anything like it lol

I agree the framerate isn’t anything incredible. but seriously, people calling it souless already? how the hell, from a 2 minute TRAILER can you come to that conclusion? there’s jumping the gun and then there’s just not giving the game a chance at all. we’ve been given barely any information on the story so far so to call it souless after you’ve seen next to nothing is just people finding an excuse to complain. I’m fine with genuine complaints that people can back up their claims for such as, the framerate. that’s constructive critisicism that means square can do something about it.

as for graphics being so called downgraded, It’s very unlikely, they’ll most likely be the same XIII-2’s the game is still in an early stage and the graphics and rendering of different effects, shadows and hightlights etc always get changed throughout a development. I doubt it’ll be any different here

I’m looking forward to it, they’ve revamped the combat system again, they said before the game was even shown it was going to be more action-RPG like, yet people are still like ‘wtf is this?’ I mean seriously research the game or the presentation they had for it. where they go into details about the game. I hope we can get some Eidolons this time around, the lack of them in XIII-2 was pretty bad, plus making the game more action-rpg orientated would give them the perfect excuse to put in summons.

    • Developers probably realise that obsessing over the graphics was a big mistake when everything else was more important. Deus Ex, a great game with ugly graphics. Think about it.

      • OathkeeperSoraXIII

they already have the engine down though to produce the same graphics at the same quality as XIII-2, the problem is the choppy framerate which is mainly caused to due it being still at an early stage of development

  • The new trailer is definitely better than the one that leaked. I read more about the battle system on the FF Wiki and apparently, while there still is ATB, each action that you see is mapped to the face buttons. So yes, the game is going to be more action oriented while still retaining some ATB influence. The screenshots look good. I’m actually ready to see how this game pans out. I love the concept and Lightning looks bad ass as ever.

  • Setsuna ♥

Lightning looks like shes sporting Nobunagas outfit in an Assassins Creed universe now, as much of a critic as I am about XIII … I’ll still play it.

  • Shadowman

What else can I say but the game looks…..Great.

  • Hinataharem

    Doesn’t look terrible…..

  • AoNoise

Wait… so it’s official now? Not a leaked trailer? With THAT framerate? THOSE bleak textures? The bland looking town and mediocre font?

Ok, I guess… it saddens me because I just went through XIII again and, boy, is that game beautiful. Linear, yes, but beautiful.

What happened to whoever designed Lake Bresha, the Hanging Edge, Eden and all the beautiful and polished locales for the original game?

    I’m a sad moogle…

    • mrdrpage

I HOPE it’s just the fact that this is still in early development.

    • Go2hell66

have to agree with you there, now that you’ve pointed it out this city actually looks bland as hell compared to the previous settings, hopefully they’ll be a lot of area’s to explore in the full game or i’ll die of boredom

  • kangms872

    Looks great

  • mrdrpage

Am I the only person that is going to be disappointed if Lightning is the ONLY playable character? From the looks of it, that’s what it seems like.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved both games before this, but seriously, the party system is what makes FF games fun.

    • It depends on the narrative but yeah, I would’ve loved if Sazh and Fang helped out Lightning.

  • ragingmerifes

If they had to take an example from a Western game, it should have been The Walking Dead, not Assassin’s Creed.

    • amagidyne

That’s one of those monkey’s paw wishes. Picture a Walking Dead-style adventure game written and directed by the XIII team. It’s terrifying in all the wrong ways.

Assassin’s Creed would at least give them something to work with- it would be tough making that franchise’s writing any worse.

  • Is it me or does Lightning’s costume change when the paradigms shift?

  • Alfy Masamune

people still not realized why FFXIII-2 and this game were made?

These two sequals were made with no effort and are just a quick way for SE to make a quick buck as they know the fans will buy any game if it has FF in the title, then they can add lots of DLC on top of that for even ore cash, SE are freaking sellouts.

    • Anime10121

I dont think so, considering the fact that XIII-2 was my favorite entry in the (EDIT) series so far. I didnt care much for the original XIII, but I loved its sequel, and hope to like this one too (although I’m not that fond of Light, I’m sure they can give her an interesting character if she is the only character you play with for the full game).

    • David García Abril

If you really think FFXIII-2 was “made with no effort and is just a quick way for SE to make a quick buck as they know the fans will buy any game if has FF in the title”… then you didn’t play it much, if at all.

    • This is probably the stupidest comment about FFXIII ever known to man.

    • Tien Ron

no….i don’t think so, i believe they care about the games they make.

    • Unlimax

Careful my friend this place is full of XIII fans ( AKA Lightning and her Friends ) :P .. They are completely brainwashed and they don’t wanna even hear a single word from you even the Moderators , they will eat you alive if you say anything bad or even trying to Criticize it … Don’t spoil their own excitement let them enjoy the saga :]

    • Cash ore? Where do I mine that shit?

    • Yes, like they’re the only ones to be truly evil(!) Activision keeps remaking Call of Duty 4 and yet somehow they always get a free-pass.

  • Nitraion

Hmm if Lightning only playable chara i getting KH Vibe for this game…
    I mean 1 chara—>A lot skill to mess about…Just like KH:BBS or Re:CoM
although Re:CoM have 2 chara and BBS have 3 chara but i mean that style of game…

  • Marcelo Henrique Chaves

Oh God,looks like the combat was improved.

I’m imagining that each of the four skills are for each button. And the names Divinity, Cerberus, Enchanter would be the paradigm.

I saw evade and defend there, i hope these are well implemented.

This video got me interested in the combat system again. Hope i don’t get disappointed with another “button mashing, don’t even bother looking at the screen system”.

I don’t recall any JRPG that you play with only one character the entire game. That will not be good in battles.

    • David García Abril

“I don’t recall any JRPG that you play with only one character the entire game. That will not be good in battles.”

It’s true that most JRPGs have an entire party, but there are more than enough that only has one. “Terranigma” is the first (and best!) example that comes to mind.

Even more if we count those that you CONTROL only one character, like the “Kingdom Hearts” series.

      • OatMatadoQuatro

Crisis Core FF had only one character

      • Kaihedgie

Chain of Memories and beyond you always had the ability to play as more than one character (sans Re:coded)

Chain of Memories had Riku with his own storyline.

KHII had Roxas as a tutorial character, than briefly control Riku in the final battle

BBS had three different characters with their own intersecting storylines.

358/2 Days had the entire Organization playable and then some

and now KH3D is back to Sora and Riku

        • XiaomuArisu

Yes KH had multiple playable characters but you only had one at a time.
There is a difference between party and switching heroes.
Who knows?Maybe there will be parts with other playable heroes.

          • Kaihedgie

Not unless you were playing 358/2 Days multiplayer.

          • XiaomuArisu

The multiplayer is a different mode,it has nothing to do with the story.

          • Kaihedgie

Doesn’t change the fact you were still playing as other characters with more than one player

        • XiaomuArisu

Im gonna be a little more clear.
Final Fantasy 1-13 you control a party
Final fantasy XIII3 and KH you control one character

      • Sergio Briceño

The funny thing is how all the examples you guys listed let you actually control the character, while XIII-3 doesn’t. I still don’t get why we need the ATB system with just Lightning, also why we can’t get free roaming in battle.

Edit: Terranigma!!! One of Enix’s sons before the Square-enix marriage!! Really, the Square-side people should try to do with FF what the Enix-side people is doing with Dragon Quest.

    • amagidyne

Most games that get defined JRPGs feature a style of gameplay that requires more than one character for combat to be interesting. Whenever they take that away and base their combat on action, everyone says it’s a Japanese WRPG or an action game.

If this really just is XIII’s system with some bells and whistles, yeah, dunno how that will work out.

      • Marcelo Henrique Chaves

Exactly, i disliked the fact that Characters on FFXII and XIII had no identity, when it comes to combat preferences/styles.

It just seemed rushed; or lazy, by making everybody do everything.

Now if Light is the only character, battles can get a lot tedious, or too intense.

Having one character to be the damage dealer, healer, buffer, and tanker. That’s overwhelming.

But maybe i’m getting ahead of myself here assuming that.

Gonna have to wait for more info before speculate. =P

        • amagidyne

I loved that about XII. When I got Penelo for the second time, she came with enough LP to build her into a human M1 Abrams. Completely breaking the standard character roles was very gratifying to me, far more than seeing their personalities reflected in their combat styles would have been.

You could still build any of the characters into certain roles if you wanted, they had just dissolved the class system into being completely based on the License Board. Then again, some choices ended up being kind of vital, and yeah, you ended up having to give people a lot of the same stuff. I won’t make excuses for License Board too much.

In XIII I was just bored with the whole system. It took forever to get any new skills and none of the classes really felt all that different. It was like no matter what I did with my characters, all the fights lasted exactly as long as the developers intended with no real threat to my party anyway.

  • midgard229

she has a different costume on at 1:38

  • Tien Ron

LOL someone agreed that it looks like assassin creed! haha… i know wonder when the make squeals they lose more and more party members….

  • Henrique Melo

Hmmm, Lightning’s armpits again! Yummy! XD

  • Tien Ron

i cant believe whats been going on in this thread like really people? daniel D asked what i read as: the story has changed so much that it’s just crazy. love and hate exist together there was no need for the endless argument that went on here. I LOVE my final fantasy but i cant say that i care much about it, till it comes out. i will still get the game when it comes out and play it but even i think because of the way its set out the story is so out there! almost like it’s just broken the laws of final fantasy.

  • ZBaksh386

i dont see the AC connection.

    • you can climb walls and roam around the town *gasp*…me neither

  • Charmchar

I was actually one of the few people who actually liked the story in Final Fantasy 13. When i heard they were making FF13-2 i was so fucking excited and then i played it….they took a complete left turn with the story…and this one doesn’t seem to change that… at lease the combat system looks more fun now ^_^.

  • PRGamerCub

Id say it looks like Kingdom Hearts and Versus XIII lol (Ledge Jumps and swinging down poles….)

  • Sergio Briceño

After watching the above video and reading through the comments… I have some things to say:

    1) It was very funny to me watching Lightning climb the ladder like a normal person and then do a somersault at the top like a ninja would.

    2) I can see the resemblance, but more than Assassins creed, both the train scene leading to the bland city and characters, and the pole dancing reminded me of Bayoneta.

    3) Seems to me like there are two groups of people not getting things. First we have Daniel D who doesn’t know how we ended up having 3 games when one seems like enough to wrap things up, while the other two just mess up an already convoluted story. And then we have my favorite group who even though not understanding what DD means they genuinely try to answer in the best manner possible.

Let’s leave it at that, shall we? Don’t worry DD, a series can only drag for so long, so you won’t have to complain about a XIII-4, hopefully for us. And to the other group of people, I hope you get the conclusion you longed so much for. You are real fans if I ever knew any, and you deserve it.

    4) I’m a little confused about the battle system. Old RPGs relied on turn based combat to let you control multiple characters in a fight. Then it turned really boring to some people and they decided to add a timer.

Then XIII came out and brought forth ATB and if it wasn’t for the FRIGGING AUTOBATTLE option and Resonance of Fate’s marvelous battle system, then XIII’s would have taken the crown for me as standard JRPG battle system king.

But now we have XIII-2. With ONE character AND the ATB. Why not just ditch the whole turn based concept then? Why not let me move freely? Why bound me to stupid design when you could give me a REAL action game? (or at least something like Kingdom Hearts) I just hope there is a good enough reason for it, or maybe that eventually we get party members…

    5) Thanks to all the people who (on another thread) helped me with suggestions for what FF game I should start playing first. XII is sadly a no go for me as I don’t have a PS2, as well as X, but as soon as I get my hands on one I’ll try both. I think I can get the PSX era games though, but I have decided to give a shot to XIII again, seeing as how it is interesting enough to get you all worked up about it.

Edit: Yes, vote me down. Because I seriously look like a troll, don’t I? No, really, show me where I do in my comment so I can troll some more. :) Sarcasm aside, I don’t really care about voting, but it does bother me when someone gets offended, more so when I’m the reason. So if you take your time to read through my comment and find it worthy of a thumbs down, please care to comment below and explain why.

    It’ll give me a good read. It’s a win-win situation.

    • Wait what

DD said several things. If you looked at the beginning of the conversation (which is hard to do because things are out of order now), our initial responses to him were under the assumption he was just saying he didn’t like that this game existed, so we said “we like it, get over it”. He then said he didn’t understand the story, so we tried explaining it to him, only for him to say he knows the story but doesn’t understand why he should care, to which we said he SHOULDN’T if he doesn’t like it, to which he said we never answered his question.

Nobody was misunderstanding him, he was a troll that was flip-flopping between different “questions” and getting upset because people weren’t agreeing with him. He wanted us all to say “yeah we don’t know what’s going on”, but we do know and we do like it. He got mad because he didn’t get what he wanted, end of story.

I know, I know. I was just trying to be polite and tell everybody to calm down without pointing fingers or anything.

  • Should be interesting to see what Versus takes from the combat system in this game. I would still never buy this trash.

    • but you haven’t even played the fuc….nevermind I give up with you people.

  • LiamMusume

Looks very bad.. :( I am not a fan of Final Fantasy anymore. Well not a fan of the XIII – Series. They have milked it too much and this will be my first time not buying a Final Fantasy Game, the title screen looks so bland and the city looks very very dull. The only thing I can say is good is the graphics

    • Then try a different RPG franchise and not just JRPGs. There is some legitimately cool WRPGs like Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

  • Sergio Briceño

Do you think we get to chose our costume for each paradigm, or they are set? It’d be cool if we get something like the limiter drive form from KH2FM and we are able to change into a paradigm with the old FFXIII Lightning costume.

  • ff93

    It looks amazing. <3

  • Brimfyre

I’ll be honest. I’ve played through XIII and XIII-2 to completion and I still have no idea how the fighting system works.

  • Alfy Masamune

lightning, female lead with the personality of a plank of wood.

    • You might as well say Lightning’s an emotionless robot but then again I rather an emotionless robot than Vaan and Rikku.

  • Richard N

If there’s one thing Square still does right; it’s making badass fight songs.

  • Helepythia

I haven’t played XIII, but if it plays like Assassin’s Creed, heck I’d give it a shot…so long as it doesn’t frustrate me like 3.

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I am looking forward to this as I am a fan of Lightning.

I take this as a teaser only – showing Lightning the loner, some combat, a town and some backstory.

  • chroma816

Looks like they fixed up the battle system a bit.
I guess I’m a little interested in the game.

But what was with that P3-inspired countdown thing? It looked like Lightning was about to enter the dark hour, hahaha.

    • Some1 make a fanart of this plz XD

  • hawk222

It definitely looks interesting (and somewhat better than FFXIII-2, if you ask me). I know Lightning will be able to interact with the environment in terms of movement, but will she be able to do anything else? You know, like attacking weak walls, or something like that?
(Attacking weak walls is just an example to give you an idea of what I’m getting at.)

  • It be interesting to see Lightning grow as a character. Fighting alone, having to always fight all the time, no rest, not to mention of the loss of her sister.

I wonder the other characters main will be developed? Snow lost Serah too, Noel killed Etro and Hope’s plan for a future home swallowed in chaos.

  • I don’t see how it looks like Assassin’s Creed…what cause she is wearing white? gimme a break.

  • Monsley

It’s nice to see some gameplay, but I’m still dubious: how does this relate to FFXIII plot-wise?

    • OatMatadoQuatro

I think this is a postapocalypse world after Caius unleashed Chaos. Somehow, Lightning will try to save this ruined world or recover the old one.

  • Gintakaya

Reading these comments were more interesting than viewing both trailers.

  • Jay

You know what I want? Lightning’s clothes to return. -.-

  • haqua

…At least the battle theme gets better every time? Haha.

  • Angeru_Lito

hanging onto ledges is not really Assassin’s Creed-ish

  • Sergio Macellaro

    Way to go S-E!!
3 so-so games instead ONE GOOD.
Way to go S-E TO HELL.
Man, Light running recalls to me Ezio and the sunglases come from Deus EX (now another Square franchise).
Well, lets hope for, in “ps4”, FFXV be a good game.

  • Tony

And Hope’s back, there goes all Hope of it being bearable to listen to, and 13 2 was going so well too.
