Game Freak To Evolve Pokémon World Further In 2013

By Ishaan . December 24, 2012 . 9:30am

Pokémon developer, Game Freak, have published a New Year’s greeting card in Nintendo Dream magazine in Japan. The card, according to Pokémon Memo, includes a brief message from the studio.

Game Freak say that they intend to work toward evolving the Pokémon world in the year 2013. No further details are provided, however.

Update: Slight correction made.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Evolving the Pokémon world? 1080P pokemon

    • Marcelo Henrique Chaves

Who said graphics doesn’t matter? (just kidding)
But that looks all sorts of awesome.

    • Looks amazing. Though it would be on the Wii U not 3DS. 3DS can’t handle that beauty.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

Something for the wii-u maybe a adventure rpg like Colosseum or a crossover (MONSTER HUNTER XPOKEMON?!* NO?

        • Likely the Colosseum thing.

    • Godman

Woo with gameplay and graphics like that I wouldn’t care if they limit the Pokemon to Gen 1 only, and start a new 3D Pokemon series altogether

    • RedShadoww

Ugh..that pic again..a realistic setting like that doesn’t fit pokemon AT ALL in my opinion. It would have to be cel-shaded graphics to make it look more like anime.

    • ahmad H.

I hope not …One Good Point of pokemon that the Main series is 2D ..
But It’ll be awesome to make it a “full playable anime”

  • ragingmerifes

They will probably make 3D grass and three Pokémon to choose in the start, instead of three. And they will add 100 new species. PokéRevolution!

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

Pokemon Something wii-u? or maybe gen 6

    • Detrimont

” three Pokémon to choose in the start, instead of three”
      that statement is very confusing

      • ragingmerifes

  • Herok♞

Sounds to me like they are working on Gen 6, which is strange since I thought they would remake gen 3 next.

    • Who says they won’t do both?

    • LinkofCourage

It makes sense to do gen 6 first, so they can remake Ruby/Sapphire with newer Pokemon and mechanics.

    • SirTeffy

Evolution to me means taking something and taking it a step further, and in video-game speak means “We’re doing an expanded remake”. I immediately thought “Expanded Gen 3 remake incoming!” on reading that statement.

  • Derek E Nay

I kind of hope it will be some sort of major change, like from Gen 2 -> Gen 3. Adding special defense, more balanced EP…. I just want to play pokemon with the pokemon I like, and not the ones that I have to play in order to be ok in pokemon battles.

    • OverlordZetta

Last I checked, unless you like some really terrible Pokemon, you should be able to do that fine.
Now, if you’re talking about playing “competetively” then that’s just not fair. They play the game one way, you want to play it – I think one of the great things about Pokemon is that it allows for things like that in the first place. Taking away from them is just as bad as it would be if they killed off all “non-competetive Pokemon” and turned the series into a hardcore RPG.

      • PreyMantis

Are you saying that Pokemon is not a “hardcore” RPG? Last time I checked, it’s a lot deeper than most RPG games out there with its meta-game and confusing levelings.

        • OverlordZetta

But that’s only if you want it to be.
If you want to play the game as a monster collecting/fighting game, because of how all of that stuff is put together, you could do it and never even know that stuff was there – and I think that’s one of Pokemon’s best points. I’ve actually dabbled in the “hardcore” scene, and I think it can be a lot of fun, even as fun as the “casual” game, but the fact is that it’s important to make it possible to do either and all in-between, or it’s just not Pokemon.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Hopefully it means PKMN main games will be in the same style as Pokemon Stadion/Gale Of Darkness/BattleRevolution and ditch the 2d stuff of ancient times. That would be evolving the PKMN world extensively.

    • That is what I am feeling myself.

    • monkey

yeah because 2d is ancent when it takes more work? please If 2d games are good enough for ps3, they can be good enough on 3ds

      • XYZ_JolteonZ980

2D is ancient, when was the last 2D movie release, 2D anime is going away as well, 2D games are next, so its time to move on and go 3d

      • Symbol de Au

How does 2D take more work?

Also yeah to be fair ancient things usually take more work.
        Dial phone-Modern house phone
        Hammer-Nail Gun
        Rake-Leaf Blower

        • monkey

because hand drawing the art is alot more time consuming, and is a great artistic style

          • Symbol de Au

Very misinformed answer. You realise with 3D models they have to handraw 2D concept art then make 3D models then add animation to those models.

          • monkey

dont be stupid 2d games have concept art as well but the difference is the hand drawing goes beyond that, it doesnt for 3d games

          • Symbol de Au

You’re not even trying to think properly. First off we’re talking about pokemon in which they include two drawings per pokemon and one per trainer. It obviously takes more work to make a 3D model that can be viewed from any angle than two little sprites that can be viewed in front or back. I will ignore any response from you if it’s like the one you just made.

          • monkey

and your not even thinking. Stop acting like you know how many drawings it takes to get the sprites just right. Also stop pretending like the cut scenes arent hand drawn as well/. Alot more goes into it than a 3d game

            And the kicker

Gamefreak circa 2004 “Sprites with regard to the main series take more time and energy than the work we did on games like stadium. But that is ok. We love the freedom that sprites provide.”

          • Symbol de Au

Most pokemon games contain like 2-4 cut scenes which shouldn’t even be classified as cut scenes. One is the opening and the others usually a short short piece of the legendary awakening. As for the quote I think it’s a load of crap but I can’t really argue with them so you win. Sprites take more work thusly they’re ancient.

    • Renaldi Saputra

somehow I feel agree with u

  • Alfy Masamune

improve the combat hopefully as its getting stale and really boring.

  • Jordan Ortiz

I hope by “evolving the Pokemon world” they mean adding evolutions to useless Pokemon like dunsparce.

    • OverlordZetta

I disagree. I think it’s fine to have Pokemon that are “useless” in the game. Not all animals are super competent in the wild – some just kind of chill and exist. Likewise, the Pokemon “wildlife” should be the same.

    • sd28

      but dunsparce has flinch hax

    • kamikki

      Dunsparce is far from useless

      • Renaldi Saputra

but without dunsparce, pokemon world wouldn’t be in balance

    • Renaldi Saputra

just no, adding dunsparce’s evolution won’t make the pokemon world be balance

  • riceisnice

I wouldn’t mind a huge spinoff series with a darker plot and lots of crying.

    • LinkofCourage

Uh, yeah, it’s called Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. :p

      • AuraGuyChris

Yeah, except the friendship talk level is very high and cheesy. It needs to be downplayed.

        • Renaldi Saputra

unfortunately, the dungeon series game which HAD ‘story’ and HAD a lot of meaning must be being underrated.. although it’s very good for me

      • Renaldi Saputra

Mystery Dungeon didn’t have dark story..
It’s only a pokemon that truly HAD ‘Story’ and the problem are quite serious

    • Renaldi Saputra

pokemon won’t have something like that..
      the theme just doesn’t suit

  • YoshEE

I am praying that the new version of fire starter will not have a fighting type as 2nd type. Getting tired of it lol.

    • Pockystix

Can we get a Fire /Steel? lol

    • Misty Dawson

      Fire/Dark, Water/Psychic, Grass/Fighting!

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      grass/electric type woulf be awesome

      • Renaldi Saputra

        fire/ice will be super epic

    • Renaldi Saputra

yep, i’m bored of that fire/fighting starter for last 3 generations..

      • 2Chep

        Cyndaquil = best starter!

        • Renaldi Saputra

i would agree, but only in gold/silver only bcos it can use thunderpunch

    • JustThisOne

I would love an ice type that isn’t so… vulnerable. >___<

  • Go2hell66

    calling it now

    3DS pokemon MMO!

  • OverlordZetta

Still haven’t gotten around to BW2 (can’t really… care, I guess – not after two playthroughs in BW as it was and Nintendo’s inability to adapt to modern internet technology), and if there isn’t a Ruby/Sapphire remake or a Gen 6 with a good 200 Pokemon soon, I may have to call it quits. All the people with their hardons for only Gen 1 and 2 have really been killing the enjoyment series for me.

    • to be honest i like b/w 2 mainly because so much good boss music and mostly great new versions of gym leader/elite four music

      • OverlordZetta

So there’s not much in the game that you can’t get off YouTube?

        • monkey

what are you talking about black 2 is the best game in the entire series

          • OverlordZetta

Are you talking to me or Nicholas Stewart? Because, as I said, I haven’t even played it.

          • Renaldi Saputra

it’s just the same for me.. same as diamond pearl, or any previous same type of game

  • PreyMantis

MMO? Yes, I’m just wishful thinking.

    • Renaldi Saputra

there’s already a pokemon MMO.. just not official

  • Shadowman

I new pokemon game for the 3DS or Pokemon snap for the 3DS

    • IshimaruKaito

i would sell everything if needed for a “Pokemon Snap” for the 3DS!!

  • Sergio Briceño

Cool. Lately all the Pokemon games I enjoyed were the console ones and not the handheld ones. Come to think of it, it doesn’t feel like the franchise has evolved at all since R/S/E. Really looking forward to it.

  • IshimaruKaito

Pokemon Snap for the 3DS would suffice for me!

    • That’d be awesome!

    • Elvick

I’d take it on Wii U too, but 3DS would be fine. I think both platforms could do wonders for the gameplay style of the spinoff that deserves to be upgraded to a series.

  • A Pokemon MMO on the PC that could work with the DS versions would be cool.

      • sd28

wait i think he may be serious

      • Awwwww (Sadface) lol

      • CirnoLakes

Yeah, even though it is unlikely. The way Pokemon works is has basically been a PvP world dream for years and years.

Pokemon always having been about player interaction, it’s basically perfect for massive open world play.

One of these days I feel like Nintendo needs to cave in and make one.

    • Guest

With Pokemon still being a Nintendo exclusive? Maybe if Nintendo makes a gaming PC.

    • Renaldi Saputra

pokemon had already had MMO.. but it’s just not official

  • It sounds like they’ll change the formula either on the battle system or your goals as a trainer. Well, it does sound pretty exciting but in my opinion I hope it’s not an MMO or else I’ll definetely call it quits.

    • Renaldi Saputra

if they change the main formula for main pokemon games, pokemon rating will slightly go down I think.. Although I agree with u

  • monkey

all it means is pokemon on 3ds. thats it. Gen 6 to be exact

  • monkey

Gamefreak is quoted as saying barely anyone asks for an mmo in the overall fanbase, so there is no point in doing it, yet we have people here, not knowing what they are talking about begging for one like its even on there radar

    • Elvick

If there was an official Pokemon MMO, people would come out of the woodwork for it.

      Believe it!

I bet most of Pokemon’s fanbase doesn’t even know when a new game is announced in Japan. So I guess the real games aren’t on the fanbase’s radar either.

Terrible argument. I doubt they go out asking for the next Pokemon game either. They just wait and they magically appear and they buy them. Unlike the dedicated fans who actually do get vocal about what we want, because we know more about the series.

Just because “no one” asks, doesn’t mean they wouldn’t buy into it.

      • monkey

        1) it wouldnt work
        2) it wouldnt make profit
        3) mmos have a negative connotation

  • Shadowman

How about another Pokemon Coliseum game for the 3DS and Wii U, still just an idea.

  • Godman

Bigger world, trainer creator, more varied dual-typing, more sets of badges (Gold & Silver), ability to have Pokemon follow you (why they removed it I’ll never know),
There are so many thing that can be added to Pokemon to make even better than ever, I have to say I’m excited for this.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      all my yes’s

  • Visa Vang

So we’re gonna finally have real body physics!?

One of the possible ways I can see Pokemon evolving is the eventual jump into 3D with 3D characters and Pokemon instead of 2D sprite based ones.

Then again, I can also see Game Freak evolving the series, yet still using 2D sprites.

  • How about adding the Timing mechanics from the Mario & Luigi/Paper Mario games? That is, have the Trainers play a real role in battle than just tossing balls and spraying their ‘mons with pots. Have the Timing mechanics seem like the trainer is telling them to dodge, endure or counter! I believe the battles need more than just being standard rock ’em, sock ’em rumbles with a rock/scissors/paper formula. They need more dynamics, and the B&W games started to go a bit in that direction with combination moves. Though it’s not enough, seeing as that is more of a situation than a viable strategy.

  • Imagine being able to access older regions! That’d be awesome! I’d rather see how other regions developed over time like Unova. I keep imagining different a group of old teams gathering together as one located in different parts of the Pokemon world.

Okay, I’ll be quiet now :D
    I’m just really excited to see what direction Game Freak will take with the game ;;

    • JustThisOne

Actually, that’s exactly what I think will happen. They’re going to unite all or some of the continents in one game – to allow new players to take a glimpse and old players to drown in their own nostalgia. Revisiting Kanto was a big reason why Gold/Silver was such a great installment.

I mean, in BW2, we’re already fighting old gym bosses… wouldn’t it be interesting to see how they’re doing now? Wouldn’t it be crazy if Red was still hiding in that mountain?

    • OverlordZetta

I hope they don’t go that road. It would mean they don’t have to actually make anything new on their own, just copy paste old stuff, and furthermore, unless they butcher everything to fit it all into one game, or drastically change how exp and levels work, it just wouldn’t work.
Putting old leaders in the game is pretty much all they CAN do.

  • Marik78

“Evolving the Pokemon World” and “Evolving the Pokemon serie” are different things.
So yeah, spaceships. And the main character will be an alien :p

  • Levin_Scorpius

A Pokemon game that stars you as the villain, where you start off as newly inducted grunt (maybe/hopefully with a customizable appearance?), where you are ordered to to carry out a variety of missions for the Team across the region, becoming further entwined with all the super secret drama surrounding your Team and the stuff they get up to, with splitting story routes based on your decisions, culminating where you can end up betraying your team and bring them down, being a dutiful grunt and following your orders to the bitter end, or usurping control of your Team and leading them on to conquest of the region and lands beyond. Or you could do all of that and become the next Poke-Jesus, you horrible Mary Sue.

    • Renaldi Saputra

      like Pokemon Colloseum u mean??

  • Christopher Nunes

Maybe an actual 3D Pokemone Adventure game for the Wii U? Please just once to have one where you explore a new region and collect 8 badges in 3D on the console just for the fun of it… and possible a Custom Trainer option like in Pokemon Battle Colosseum, that was awesome!

And maybe Pokemon Snap 2… I loved Pokemon Snap on the N64, really fun and tricky to get the best pictures… especially like Mew!

I wonder what Generation 6 will be like and its starter? So far Charmander has and to this day been my favorite of the Starter Pokemon and nothing has come close… and it would be great to see more dual-types of Pokemon like Fire/Dark, Grass/Dark, Steel/Dark, Dragon/Psychic, etc…

Maybe a Pokemon x Digimon crossover game? Eh… that’s asking too much isn’t it? It would’ve been cool to see the long-time monster rivals to come face-to-face for the first time ever.

    • I wouldn’t get my hopes up. They’ve been very clear that they aren’t interested in doing a full-blown Pokémon RPG on consoles, and they’ve actually said it several times by now.

Personally, I’m okay with that. Pokémon has always been developed exclusively around portability, and it’s one of the very few series that doesn’t just stop at being better on a portable, but is developed entirely around the idea of portability.

And…. I doubt Nintendo are interested in doing a crossover with Digimon. They have nothing to gain from that whatsoever. :P

      • Christopher Nunes

        Oh well.

But nothing to gain with a Pokemon X Digimon crossover game? They manage to do a Pokemon X Nobunga’s Ambition/Samurai Warriors crossover game… I see why not.

        • Because Nobunaga’s Ambition is a game in an entirely different genre, and it’s a game targeted at older players. Pokémon Conquest helped sell Pokémon to slightly older players than usual. A crossover with Digimon wouldn’t reach out to any kind of audience that Pokémon isn’t already serving.

          • Christopher Nunes

I suppose… but I really like to see a fighting game involving those two. I mean there’s the Digimon Rumble Arena games and those were popular in the day!

  • Aisha Lee

When I hear evolve the pokemon world. I feel that they might add things to the existing games (B/W, B/W2) Personally if they were to added new things to the existing games. I would like the return/updated form of the Battle Frontier, Pokemon Contest, and Pokemon Marathon in the form of one big attraction site (always found these things to big variety to the pkmn games and I feel that the Stats trainers from D/P/P should come back as battle brains). Also Things like the Underground Mining (forgot what it was call, its was in D/P/P) The ability to let your lead pokemon follow around and the Pokemon Plaza would make for some awesome updates too.

  • Guymelef

have it cross-playable with 3DS like MH3 Ultimate

  • Chris Cruz

Bring us a Pokemon ReBurst game and you might make something impossible happen. You may make me get interested in Pokemon again.

    • Renaldi Saputra

      Spirit Evolution!!!

      • Elvick

Which one is that? The one with the kids who turned into the Digimon with spirits or whatever?

I could never remember which season/series that was.

        • Renaldi Saputra

          yes, that is

    • XYZ_JolteonZ980

But Pokemon ReBurst has ended, so why bring a game out for a dead franchise?

      • Renaldi Saputra

has it?? did the manga end??
what a shame, it’s a more serious theme of pokemon..
it should be rated good instead, or maybe bcos it looks like frontier??

        • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Yep, ended at 8 volumes this year, so it only lasted like one year and some :(

          • Renaldi Saputra

            i see :/

  • Renaldi Saputra

I hope they stop making a game which we’re told to beat the 8 gym leaders and become champion for no apparent reason and just focusing on making dungeon series which we can see a ‘story’ in the game..
oh yes, they also need to stop that sh*tty series.. it’s just annoying

also, wouldn’t they mind to make a new type of pokemon?? the ‘Holy’ type..
whopps, I think it would be a mess

    • Renaldi Saputra

so, my comment was disliked by some poke-fags..

      • biskmater

Well, you attacked the very foundation of the main Pokemon games, so it was bound to happen.

        • Renaldi Saputra

          I see

  • Elvick

I wonder if they’ll go 3D. That would certainly “evolve the Pokemon world”.

  • Bueno

Hopefully they’ll replace HMs with items or some sorta equivalent where I won’t need to have one of my pokemon an attack that will permanently be there for the rest of time. Even when catching a seperate pokemon to be the “HM slave”, that shit is still annoying

    • JustThisOne

Though I had originally loved the concept, I totally agree. It was kind of annoying to have to waltz to the PC to grab certain pokemon to use strength on boulders all the time.

Especially on Victory Road, where everything Self Destructs, and that one slot – where a mainstay pokemon could be – is taken.

    • Elvick

      I’ve always hated that.

Does the Pokemon world have no flashlights? Hedge clippers? Are swimming classes solely reserved for trainers that will only use water types? Why have an endless backpack if you can’t even carry some basic things to aid in your quest?

Fly is one of the few that makes sense needing a Pokemon for. Even then, why do you have to teach a Pokemon how to “Fly” just to be able to carry you around? It can already fly. >_>

      Pokemon logic is so weird.

      • Renaldi Saputra

but dodrio can fly without wings

      • Renaldi Saputra

        and so is Dive..
pokemon had so many non-logical things..
well, pokemon mostly aim for kids.. that’s why

    • Suicunesol

Naw, I think it’s a great concept. It seems illogical though because its been carried over from the original games with virtually no changes. HMs were made so that Pokemon could be used for non-battle purposes, to highlight that they are capable of more than just fighting. Sure you could use a flashlight, swim yourself, or buy a sword and hack down trees. But your Pokemon can do that for you, so why bother?

Ideally, to evolve the concept correctly, you would want to eliminate HMs and replace them with field moves that Pokemon would already inherently know. A Scyther wouldn’t/shouldn’t need to be taught “cut”.

Also, make the obstacles a little more obstaclish. Make the boulders bigger, the trees and vines thicker, the caves darker, the waters more restless such that you really would need a Pokemon along with you to survive.

      • Bueno

Pokemon having inherant out-of-battle field moves/abilities, like Scyther with Cut, sounds great.

The concept itself, as it currently stands, is only good on paper. I don’t think anyone likes carrying a HM slave around and most HM moves themselves aren’t appealing enough to warrant taking up a permanent moveslot on a mainstay member of your party,

        • Renaldi Saputra

the only useful HM for battling is just Surf and Rock Climb..

          • Bueno

Rock Smash is decent for some Pokemon who can’t normally learn fighting type moves too, I guess. Though I think that was turned into a TM in recent games.

          • Renaldi Saputra

yea, in B/W it became TM.. but since B/W one, TMs can be used anytime just like HM..

  • Kai2591

If the main Pokemon games becomes fully 3D, I might actually go back to playing it :)
Haven’t played a Pokemon game since Ruby lol~

  • CirnoLakes

There’s an obvious joke to play here about Pokemon evolving.

To be honest, I welcome it. They’re been trying to evolve the franchise since Ruby and ect. and further back than that. Though they definitely tried some really different things with Ruby and Sapphire.

To be honest, while it will probably be very very unpopular with many who have gotten used to 4 moves for strategizing for years and years and would completely change the gameplay entirely, getting rid of the 4 move limit would be pretty nice.

I mean, sure, years of strategy based upon the 4 move limit would disappear entirely and the Pokemon world and gameplay would be much different. But there’s still all the other games before it to do that with. And playing with more than 4 moves can still be very strategic.

I understand that Pokemon get worn out after a while and that is logical. But having a single 4 moves until Pokemon lose stamina and struggle just isn’t realistic and you don’t see it in the show or any of the manga. That’s not to say the anime isn’t often vastly inferior and silly, but at least is fills up many of the logical hole spots the game still carries. There’s a reason Pokemon Yellow was such a great game.

    • zephyrsword

I honestly hope you’re right with this. It seems like the most logical option if Nintendo is prepared to take a risk and shoot for something new. I can see some of the hardcore fans and genwunners biting at it, but we seriously need a change to the formula about now, even if it doesn’t end up proving to be wholely successful.
