Cyberpunk 2077 Draws Inspiration From These Other Games

As its name suggests, CD Projekt Red’s new RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, is set in a cyberpunk world. The game is based on an old pen-and-paper RPG, with the goal being to draw upon those pen-and-paper designs for a modern, open world role-playing game.

To help find inspiration for their game, CD Projekt Red checked out a bunch of other games that share a similar setting or game concept, and have listed some of these on the Cyberpunk 2077 development blog. Here’s the list, by senior designer Marcin Janiszewski:

Dystopia and Syndicate are, of course, not the only games that we are looking at, though they are obvious inspirations. There are quite few more. I will only highly major features of these games that have guided what we want Cyberpunk 2077 to become, and maybe in the future we will go into more details about how these concepts work together.

System Shock (1994) – Great atmosphere combined with non-linear gameplay

Fallout 2 (1998) – A character’s development could determine the available dialog options he/she would encounter

Baldur’s Gate Saga (1998-2000) – Faithful adaptation of a Pen& Paper RPG system without getting bogged down in numbers.

Deus Ex (2000) – Considered by many to one of the best (if not the best) Cyberpunk game. It had an involving story multiple ways to accomplish a goal. One of first games of its time and still one of the very few games where it was possible to finish it without killing anyone.

The Witcher series (2007, 2011) – Rich and mature story. Stunning graphics.

Skyrim (2011) – One of the best implementations of an open, sandbox world.

You may notice that The Witcher, CD Projekt Red’s other series of games, is listed as one of the influences that Cyberpunk 2077 is drawing upon. CD Projekt Red have stated in the past that their experience from developing the Witcher games will be put to use in Cyberpunk 2077, and that ideas which didn’t make it into those games will be used here instead.

    What a great combination.

Well, maybe if they throw out Skyrim and draw sandbox and exploration from Fallout 2 instead. And NPC interaction as well.

      • I have a feeling that Skyrim is not a huge influence. The way they talk about the first Deus Ex (they seem to hold a lot of respect for that game in particular), it seems like they will be drawing a lot of inspiration from that experience. While I am hoping (and expecting for now) that this will be a 3rd person perspective… they sure do make a lot of references to 1st person games.

Edit: doh, my bad only 3 references really and skyrim can be played in 3rd person but uhh, yeah, I wont get into that.

  • Easily my most anticipated game for next gen/PC. Even though we haven’t seen a moment of gameplay, I just know CD Projekt RED has the pedigree to make this a compelling experience.

Yeah, as a PS3 owner and supporter I hope it ends up on said system but if not than I’m getting a 360 anyways but still. I hope it’s not on PC only.
I really like RED, they’re an over looked dev. team if you ask me.

Considering it’s not due out until 2014 at the earliest I’m willing to bet even if it does get ported to consoles it won’t be current gen consoles.

        • AnimusVox

Ah good point, guess I got a little ahead of myself lol

      • this will not be current gen, slated for a 2015 release or “when it’s ready”
The Witcher 3 will be the next game from CD Projekt Red

Their inspiration coupled with the fact that they did such a stellar job with the witcher series gives such great hope for this game, am begining to get that Hype feeling now, and its super itchy :)

  • Lars Anderson

Looks like the chaps at CDPR have great taste in games.

  • Corey Owens

The Witcher! Who would have guessed?

  • Rudy Soto

    Um, Snatcher?

  • AnimusVox

They had me at Deus Ex, Baldur’s Gate and System Shock <3

  • Does every game have to mention skyrim as an inspiration now ? -__-

  • haha, praising their own game as a source of inspiration to them.
