Fire Emblem: Awakening Demo Hits Nintendo eShop Today

Nintendo 3DS eShop update:

 

This week’s major release on the Nintendo eShop is a downloadable demo for Fire Emblem: Awakening. The full version of the game will be released on February 4th, both at retail and on the eShop.

 

Meanwhile, Nintendo also released a quirky game called Tokyo Crash Mobs, where you toss bystanders into lines of people, grouping people of same colours to make them disappear. This game costs $5.99.

 

On the retail front, Deer Drive Legends and Disney/Pixar Finding Nemo: Escape to the Big Blue are now available in download form. Finally, Kirby’s Star Stacker for the Game Boy is available on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console for $2.99.

    I already played it and it was AMAZING.
    Everything was just…. Fantastic.
    If you’re at all familiar with the series I recommend skipping normal and trying it on hard.

    If anyone is curious, the demo is the very beginning of the game so it doesn’t really spoil anything.

      It’s been years since I played a Fire Emblem. Should i play it in normal? or hard isn’t too hard?

        Hard wasn’t very difficult, but the demo is only the first 2 chapters.
        If you’re familiar with the basics you should have no problem.
        Maybe try normal if you want to get familiar with the new mechanics and brush up a bit.

          I did it on Hard. But your character has Tomes. So I gave him Str – Mag. Needless to say he died :/ while I was trying to figure out how to change weapons. (Items menu)

          Chrom got killed second time around (one shotted) was messing around with the mechanics XD. 3rd time around everything went smoothly

          How many difficulty options are there, only Easy, Normal, and Hard? I know the DS ones had about 5 hard modes, or something like that.

            Normal, Hard, and Lunatic. I’m no Fire Emblem rookie, I’m a ten game vet. But lunatic mode destroyed me.

    Gotta recommend playing this one in 3D, everything is much more crisp and some visual flairs are more pronounced. Trailers don’t do it justice. Great demo.

      Agreed. I always thought it looked good enough, but nothing compares to actually playing it on the 3DS. The visuals were great and the 3D was well implemented.

      Same here. Because their are so many HUD elements on the screen above the map, the 3D is really put to good use by making them hover.

    The demo for Fire Emblem Awakening was amazing. The writing is top notch (something that Nintendo has always been known for when it comes to Intelligent System’s localized games) and the gameplay was crisper than ever. Animation was wonderful, combat sequences were gorgeous, the cutscenes were astounding and I cannot stop heaping praise upon this demo… Man, February 4th cannot come soon enough (though at the same time, it can… I have a major project due on the 5th…)

      Actually, I get the feeling the dialogues are a bit lacking in depth. It’s nice they went for a medieval English feel, but (understandable I suppose) some of the flow got lost in translation. Aside from that it looks fantastic though. ^^

    This was just a taste, A TASTE! I need more! Only two chapters and I’m already falling in love with the characters. Chrom is definitely going to be my new favorite Lord X3

        I was a big fan of that exchange – sort of a JRPG spin on Jeeves and Wooster (one of my all time favorite TV shows and books). I do see one major problem though…

        They can’t make me LIKE Frederick – I can’t ever use him! He’s the Seth of the game!

          I’m the exact opposite… he does so much damage that I have him running around all over the grid to assist other characters!.

            That is a good point though – Fire Emblem tradition demands that the powerful character you receive in the beginning should be shuffled out… but that’s yet another thing that the expansion of the support systems has changed, huh?

            I’ll have to take your word for that! I’ve… actually only played one other Fire Emblem game and it was back in the GBA days. Truth be told, I’m normally not fond of SRPGs at all. The only ones I’ve liked of late are Valkyria Chronicles, Sakura Wars and Devil Survivor.

            I’ve tried so many times to get into other ones but I could just never do it and regretted the purchase every single time. FF Tactics/Advance both bored me very quickly. Disgaea 2 I loved right up until the first battle, halfway through which I got bored. I loved Super Robot Taisen OG since it was my very first SRPG but disliked the second one immensely.

            Fire Emblem I tried on GBA but got turned off almost immediately into the first battle. I was also really annoyed when Square made the third Valkyrie Profile game an SRPG, haha.

            I think it’s just that I don’t have the patience for the grid stuff combined with the fact that I like my RPGs to be a tad more… flashy? I like seeing detailed attack animations and cool camera effects. That may be why FE: Awakening is okay in my book so far. It feels a bit more actiony and fast-paced than your typical SRPG.

            Personally, I used him as a partner unit for Lissa, since I didn’t want him to take EXP. Works out pretty well!

          I so wanted to see Stephen Fry do a cameo somewhere in the last season of House. Portraying some arrogant Brit in the mold of his take on Mycroft would have been such a riot.

    Gave in and tried the demo. Dammit, now the wait has become even MORE painful! Played it on Hard but was it just me, or were the two levels on Hard actually kinda difficult? My Robin got one-shotted by a stray crit in the first level and same for Sully in the second mission. Didn’t really care since it’s only a demo but dang, this is going to be a hard game right from the get-go.

    So what did you all put as a flaw? I didnt want to put skill or luck so I went with Res :/ Damn mages were a pain :< Oh well using pairs fixed it up

      Going from experience of other Fire Emblem’s, I imagine that Luck would have probably been one of the better options, though it would make you more susceptible to critical hits.

      I ended up going Speed+/HP-. And yet I still never got a double attack off on anything… Damn you, heavy Thunder tome.

      I chose Mag > Str. The reason is that I think a character should specialize in a single weapon type. If my mage is only going to be using tomes, he shouldn’t need strength.

    It’s interesting how different 3DS games use the 3D effect in different ways. Even the subtle changes are really neat to take note of.

    For example, in a lot of 3DS games, the dialogue boxes for text are pressed up against the screen. In other 3DS games, they pop “off” the screen, like they’re hovering above it. In FE, they’re ever-so-slightly “behind” the screen. I love seeing the little preferences developers have with their 3D UI designs.

    The grid in this game looks neat, too. I like how it’s at an angle and you can see the depth with the 3D turned on.

      I don’t even like seeing movies in 3D much, but I certainly enjoyed all the subtle details and took time to soak them all in. Ill definitely be playing this with 3D on.

        3D movies I think don’t look nearly half as good as 3D games do. Every 3D movie I’ve been to hasn’t really been anything special. Games I think work better because the details in games are more exaggerated, and they can do more stylistically to help bring the 3D effect out. In movies it just looks odd because real life is more “3D”.

        Wipeout HD actually looks amazing in 3D. The framerate takes a hit, but oh man, the visual trade-off. *drool*

          A lot of it has to do with lighting too, it can make the difference between a good 3D movie and a bad 3D movie. The lighting is much better controlled naturally in a game then in movies where they have to deal with real life circumstances (of course computer animated movies being the exception).

          The sense of depth can work in advantage with games because of their stylistic approach. in movies it runs an increase risk that’s not there with most games, the sense of depth can create an uncanny valley effect for some people. The Uncanny valley has been kinda a hot topic now too with 48 fps movies and higher hertz ratios on TVs too.

            Yeah, that’s definitely a factor and where the “real life is more 3D” bit comes from. 3D movies are trying to get close, but it doesn’t feel real because it’s not quite creating that same sense of space that you get IRL. It’s unfortunate that 3D movies have ruined people on 3D in general, because games do it so much better.

    Huzzah for the FE: Awakening demo! Kirby’s Star Stacker was also a nice surprise. I was about 7 year old when it came out & I played it.

    What a great demo! I played it on Normal first, and I wasn’t very impressed, but then I tried it on hard, and it made a big difference. I’m really looking forward to this game now. I was always gonna try it, but now I’m actually excited.

    i spent like 10 mins on which stats my main character is good at and what he lacks in….anybody got any good ideas?? first i picked “Speed” then i chose “magic” which is better in your opinions?

    Completely ignoring Fire Emblem demo since I’ll definitely be playing it anyway when it arrives. Though it does hurt a little bit that I’ll be taking a 14 hour flight on Feb. 1 and returning on another 14 hour flight Feb. 8… both Fire Emblem-less. Would have been SUCH a perfect way to pass that time.

    By the way, is Kirby’s Star Stacker any good?

    With Lunatic mode, you really have to know what you’re doing from the start. One wrong move will be the end of you…and that’s just the first stage. I can’t wait for the full version so I can play it the traditional way with permadeath.

    Feb. is going to be a great month with this and EO IV.

    Awakening is the first time I ever played anything Fire Emblem. I haven’t even played any games on emulators but what I got was pretty awesome :3
