Mega Man Xover U.S. Release Is “On Hold”

By Ishaan . January 29, 2013 . 1:30pm

Last year, Capcom released a Mega Man social game for iOS devices in Japan. Titled Mega Man Xover, the game melds a whole bunch of Mega Man history into a single game that plays conveyor belt-style, with Mega Man running through stages automatically. (You’re still given the ability to jump and shoot)

While the game is already out in Japan, Mega Man Xover isn’t headed to the U.S. in the near future, Capcom’s Senior Vice-President, Christian Svensson, revealed on the company’s forums this morning.

“Based upon the largely negative feedback from [Mega Man] fans, I’ve requested that we place any Americas release on hold for the time being,” Svensson shared in a forum post. “We will revisit at a later date.”

Capcom’s U.S. and Japanese divisions are currently in the process of celebrating Mega Man’s 25th anniversary. In the U.S., this celebration will continue throughout the year, with more details to be announced in the future. Meanwhile, in Japan, Mega Man Xover was part of the 25th anniversary celebration. Capcom added retro worlds and Robot Masters to the game.

Wow, is this the first time Capcom has ever listened to fan feedback?

    • almostautumn

Well It’s certainly not the first time they blamed the fans for cancelling megaman.

    • Kaihedgie

I suppose Phoenix Wright and Strider Hiryu don’t count as fan feedback

      • AkuLord3

Eh sorta…they ignore other stuff so…mixed

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Don’t worry Capcom, this is the only Megaman game we do not want it.

  • Victor Hunter

This is irony of the highest calibre.

  • Kaihedgie

I smell a remake. At least, I hope that’s the case. KH Coded was very different from the DS release.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3ALwKeSEYs yes!!!! that would be an awesome Idea! however…….it should be for the 3DS

    • OverlordZetta

I dunno, I can’t smell much else over the overpowering smell of all of that Capcom gonna Capcom.

I did it! I saved Capcom!

  • OverlordZetta

Honestly, I don’t see this as a good thing. It’s not like this is going to make them make a new game or anything. This is just a game that no one will get to get overseas. If something else comes out, it was going to come out either way.

For one thing, the “fans” giving it negative reception probably aren’t playing the game, and they likely never were going to. Like them or not, mobile card collecting grinding games like this, iM@S Cinderella Girls, and so on make great money, and furthermore, they’re crazy popular – especially in Japan. So you know what? If this had been done at another time, a huge crossover Mega Man game like this could probably have been appreciated. Those card grinders could certainly use more variety beyond Generic Fantasy Worlds 1 and 2, after all.

But see, the problem is that people wanted – rightfully so, don’t get me wrong – a proper Mega Man game for the anniversary. The problem is that people thought something big was coming for the anniversary, and for this to be ALL that really came from the anniversary was… well, a letdown, and that’s not even including the various letdowns this franchise has been hit with before this stunt.

Mega Man deserved more for his anniversary. That’s the plain and simple fact to it.

Frankly, from everything I’ve seen, in the world of those card grinding games, this one actually looked pretty damn decent, and to that end, I’m actually kind of disappointed we’re not getting it, but I’m out a lot so I actually play some of those card grinding games when I’m on the go, and in small bursts, they can be kind of fun.

Now, if this had been released IN TANDEM with a proper crossover game? Maybe people wouldn’t have reacted so badly to it. Because I don’t think the negative reaction is honestly so much ot the game itself – it’s the feeling of “that’s it?” that is ever growing around Mega Man these days, and this game after god damn Bad Boxart Mega Man, well. People have good reason to not be thrilled. At the same time, though, I really don’t think that should entirely be put on the game, because the delivery of it was majorly at fault.

Now, for not hating this game mindlessly from here to kingdom come, I know I’m just asking for dislikes and all that, but eh, I don’t even care anymore. Capcom’s been letting me down far too much for me to, but humor me for a minute, would you?

Imagine if this had been released during Mega Man’s prime, or with a game where this guy (or even Mega Man proper) traveled to other worlds to fight enemies of all the Mega Man games. It’d probably be recieved like any other cell phone game, but it certainly wouldn’t get the absurd negative response it’s getting.

And this, finally, gets me to my point:

This Mega Man game isn’t coming out… because Mega Man games aren’t coming out.

    Now that’s just ironic.

    • http://whatistheexcel.com/ Excel-2014

Five words: Final Fantasy All The Bravest.

      • Göran Isacson

Yeah, what this guy said. This game, from trailers and everything I’ve seen, demons and play impressions, really did look like a complete piece of crap. I get what you’re saying, blind hate is seldom good and sometimes you need to give something a chance but… yeah, I’ve seen what this looks like. I’ve seen it played. It looks ABYSMALLY HORRIBLE, “social game” or not.

    • AkuLord3

I get what you mean and i do agree with most of what you said.
Some card games and such worked because the franchise is super popular in japan and even then you still see console games of said franchise.
Well with Xover and heck a few other iphone/iOS games of really old series people wanted to see comeback…its kinda disappointing that in the end result is we get something low tier like this (even if its good).

Really if this was made even if Xover was made when Megaman was still strong…we would still hate it but at least then we know we would be playing a better game soon…but now…yeah

      • OverlordZetta

Well, the “we” that would hate it would be the people that aren’t into these games to begin with – but that’s the whole point. These games, especially (or perhaps mostly – they really do seem to be a hit in Japan) here in the West, aren’t supposed to be the substitute for a real game. They’re called social games and released on phones, not “proper” consoles, for a reason, after all.

As I said, the whole point of the problem isn’t the game itself, it’s the fact that Capcom has been doing so poorly in general.

  • z_merquise

It’s like playing Command & Conquer

    Building
    On-hold
    Cancel

  • ZEROthefirst

I would rather scream that Mega Man X7 exists over this.

    • Christopher Nunes

Hey, I liked Mega Man X7 and thought it was a good game despite it’s flaws.

Though I don’t mind too much if this wasn’t coming over, but I wanted to be able to CONTROL the movement of my character like on the console instead of automatic. The create your own “mega man” is a good idea, but poorly executed in my opinion and such.

  • Crimson Tiger

    Good call Capcom….

  • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

I’m not particularly drawn to the on-rail mechanic, but OVER-1‘s design does look pretty nice to be in a series of his own.

    • Kaihedgie

You should see his other form :3

  • Sylveria

I tried to think of something snarky or witty for this, but I’ve really got nothing. At this point, I’m just sad. I think we should just leave our flowers on Mega Man’s grave and call it a life. Games we want get canceled, games we don’t want get canceled, then all we get is Capcom flipping us off with Bad Box Art Mega Man, throwing this POS out there as his anniversary game and them trying to ride on the coat-tails of the labor of a fan with SF X MM.

I’ve seen a lot of series and characters from my child-hood and early teens get shat on, ruined, or disappear this console generation, but I don’t think any of them have gotten the disrespect from their owners as Mega Man and X.

    • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

I wouldn’t put flowers on the grave just yet… they HAVE said that they have more than just “Xover” in the works for the Mega Man anniversary… but, personally, especially now that Inafune is out of the picture, if I don’t see Capcom mention the name “inticreates” in league with any of those upcoming Mega Man celebrations, I’d rather just consider that the last good Mega Man release was Mega Man 10, or the Zero collection for DS. At least then it’d have died on a high note rather than half assed, mobile trip through memory lane.

      • Sylveria

I’ll tell ya my prediction for what they’re “working on” for his 25th(26th) anniversary and this is me being VERY optimistic.

Come March/April we’ll see them announce Mega Man 25th Anniversary Collection. It will include ports of Mega Man 1 through 8 with download codes for 9 and 10 and It will also include Mega Man X through X8. If we’re REALLY lucky, these will be remastered versions like Maverick Hunter X on PSP was. It will also have a demo for a new game starring Over-1 which will likely play a lot like Mega Man X but with Mega Man Zero’s style and RPG elements. This will be available for 360, PS3, and PSVita. It will not be available for Wii, 3DS, or Wii U because Nintendo wont want to lose the virtual console sales.

About 2-3 months or so after the Anniversary collection is announced we’ll hear that they’ve decided to re-start development on Legends 3.

  • kylehyde

    Faith in the humanity restored.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tcman.tang TC-man Tang

Then why didn’t Capcom put Mega Man Legends 3 on hold back then? But Capcom kinda want to give this awful Mega Man Xover a second chance by putting it on hold for the time-being for the US market? CANCEL it already!

  • AlteisenX

..I feel myself cheering that we don’t have it. Why not make a legitimate Mega Man again? Oh yeah… I remember why… :(

  • Göran Isacson

    You’ve chosen… wisely.

  • Go2hell66

I think thats for the best right now, capcom need to stop and think about things for a while

  • Lester Paredes

wow! Capcom made a good decision!

  • Elvick

At least they listened for once… but it won’t bring back Volnutt from the moon.

    D:<

    • CirnoLakes

      >but it won’t bring back Volnutt from the moon
I shed a single tear when you said that.

    • Christopher Nunes

I’m still bummed over that… was the ONLY reason at the time I got the 3DS for in the damn first place. :’(

  • Justin Whiteaker

I just don’t get how they’re blaming the fans for megaman hate? What hate?!

As far as I know all we’ve done is complain at capcom for neglecting us of our megaman.

  • Neppygear

“Capcom’s U.S. and Japanese divisions are currently in the process of celebrating Mega Man’s 25th anniversary.”

PFFFFFFFFFT ha ha ha ha ha ha ha yeah that’s funny

  • Just Tim

If Capcom really intends to celebrate Megaman’s anniversary without backstage politics marring the event, then it’s best to clear up storyline questions like, “Is Roll a carrier of the robofluenza virus?” “Is robofluenza a component of the Sigma Virus?” “What was Dr. Wily’s original plan for Zero?” “Did Master Thomas implement the artificial shelf life of reploids and enforced cybernetics on humans, as seen in Legends?”

And Capcom, this is your best chance to disprove a growing number of people who are believing that you’ll replace Classic Megaman as your mascot with Nemesis.

  • Valtiel Ikari

hey capcom, how about a REAL megaman game for anniversary celebration?

  • Christopher Nunes

Mixed about this… if it was any other time this could’ve received well but after they cancel two MAJOR Mega Man games fans wanted and having this as Mega’s 25th anniversary… well it’s to be expected. =_=

Honestly I do like the designs of the Mega Men you can create in this game but honestly I have the “convey belt” automatic style of traveling and I would’ve liked it if I could control my dude like in the old Mega Man or X games like before and I’m not entirely fond it’s on the iOS (though I did get a Tablet recently as a Christmas which is also an Android though I don’t know if I could play Xover on it).

Plus they seem lazy on some character designs and such and Capcom isn’t really trying their best with this amazing series which is a damn shame.

I wouldn’t mind if it came over, but I really wish they change the gameplay at least… the card collecting to customize your parts and abilities I’m fine with just the traveling part… plus let me play like I was playing the MM, X, Zero, or ZX series game with my own character. That would’ve been better.

  • Gurahk Weavile

Oh C’MON!! I wanna play this!

  • Alexander Peters

What capcom needs to do is freekin’ simple….finish the “X” series. they gave us the “zero” series which was great. Wasn’t a big fan of the “ZX” series because of the plot and who the antagonist were. SO CAPCOM IF YOU’RE READING THIS, PLEASE JUST FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED……THE ELF WARS MUST BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
