Is The Justice League Out Of Control In Injustice: Gods Among Us?

By Ishaan . January 30, 2013 . 9:00am

Warner Bros. have put out a new trailer for Injustice: Gods Among Us that gives a glimpse of the game’s story. Judging by the trailer, Injustice looks like another take on the familiar concept of members of the League being tempted to take the law into their own hands, while others try to stop them.

Injustice: Gods Among Us will be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U in April in North America and Europe.

I hope this is consumer preview (beta), or a release preview (release candidate)

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

so its based on the comic book……….I think, i’m going to look more into this.

  • Prinnydoom

Its looking good graphics are a bit dated but cant fault em for it.

  • Banshee832

I really hope this is heavily structured around the MK fighting mechanics.
Also, every fighting game needs to adopt the story telling structure Netherrealm is rocking… it is really my main reason I would play this.

  • Hossi Blumengaarten

love this!!! I loved watching the Justice League episodes in which they fight the Justice Lords and then when they fight the Crime Syndicate(and the villains are the heroes while justice league are evil)

  • Sergio Briceño

Seems Netherrealm has nailed story telling again. And good thing they did, if the fighting aspect ends up being bad, at least we got an awsome story full of awesome moments. Just like reading a comic.

  • puchinri

The comic not only pissed me off, but wondered how some things are still going to work in-game, given the recent events of what was revealed.

    • I haven’t read the comic yet! What was pissing off about it? (It’s a prologue I believe…?)

      • puchinri

Basically, the entire handling. It seemed like a cool set up for a moment, and then it became what DC is best at doing recently.

I’ll just say, someone higher up still hates Lois (and Superman can never be happy and in a relationship), and that Joker is still nu!Joker and not classic Joker. And also that he definitely should not be alive in the game.

        • Sigh. I feel like both DC and Marvel have been going out of their way to make life miserable for their star characters these last few years. Marvel with Spider-Man, DC with Superman of late.

I get that being single allows you to do more things with a character, but it’s a little upsetting that they aren’t willing to let their characters remain in committed relationships.

          • puchinri

A little, yeah. I think Marvel is a bit mixed, because they still enjoy quite a bit of humor at least (and Miles isn’t entirely miserable), but DC has just taken anything and everything that was at all fun and/or calm about any of their stuff and chucked it out the window in favor of grimdark and gritty (and they keep getting more extreme). Both companies seem to hate marriage though (well, their higher-ups at least, many of the writers are just disappointed).

It’s not even that, really. I mean, Superman had more going on while he was married to Lois and it brought a lot of great runs. But some people either hate the female lead, want to insert a particular character instead, or just want to have this bachelor life thing going on, and it’s really silly. At least with Spidey, he always had terrible luck with the ladies, but Supes? Goodness.

    • Solomon_Kano

I wanted to read the comic, but I decided it’d be for the better if it didn’t.

As a fan of these characters, the very notion that we have an evil Superman and other JL members who are killing villains but STILL won’t kill each other in a fight is ridiculous to me. It worked in Marvel vs Capcom because Marvel’s characters are generally shown to be either damn-near unkillable or of close enough in endurance that none of that mattered (seriously, Spidey can’t die) and the game was intended to be an over-the-top crossover. It doesn’t take itself seriously. This plays it straight-faced, so having Flash as a fighting game character at all doesn’t really seem sensible to me given his abilities, Superman’s the ultimate cheat code, Batman’s supposed to be unbeatable, etc. etc.

You can see why I wouldn’t have bothered to see how they tried to explain this in a tie-in comic lol. Unless everybody’s protected by magic, this just doesn’t go for me. So, again, I’ll just enjoy it as a “Yay, all the DC characters are fighting!” thing and ignore how weird this all seems. I’m also not enthused by Batman turning out to be the good guy in this evil Justice League in the end. Am I the only one who finds that predictable? It had to be him. I mean, Justice League Doom/Tower of Babel established as much.

      • puchinri

Heh, that’s also a good point.

Yeahhhh. I mean, an over the top DC brawler is an awesome idea. But, once you try to take the dark route with it, it will automatically start losing credibility to me because of certain things that you’d have to taken into consideration with the universe and characters.

Honestly, even their way to justify the story/give background would irritate you maybe. (It did for a lot of people. And still leaves holes so far.)

I really don’t buy it. My thing is, creators give Batman too much credit and leeway. I really don’t like how most people end up using him lately.

        • Solomon_Kano

Oh, so Batman is still unbeatable? Of course lol. Yea, the level of seriousness they’re trying to put on this in spite of the ridiculousness of the whole concept is really off-putting for me. I’ll still buy it, definitely. But I wish they didn’t make it so serious. In doing so, they took away the one explanation that would’ve saved them from any questions: the League doesn’t kill. By making this whole game about a League that does, well, that’s where the house of cards falls.

Again, though, just gonna keep my fingers crossed for Black Adam and Blue Beetle and ignore the story. Oh, and Sinestro.

I wish we had a spoiler tag, because I’d like to know what the justification is.

          • puchinri

Hah, of course. It’s somehow gotten worse though?

Indeed. I probably won’t buy it (only because I’m already broke and I still have three more games to pre-order that are priorities way above this), but I suspect it will do well. I actually hope it does and that WB is encouraged to do more DC games.

Well, we know Wondy kills (which someone made a funny, brilliant comment about the comic and pertaining to that), but yeah, way too many liberties.

Blue Beetle would be an awesome addition! Sinestro is just so fitting, I’m kind of surprised he wasn’t already announced.

          • Solomon_Kano

Oh, I’m there with you on being broke. I’ll buy it, but it definitely won’t be at release. Unless I get a job soon, I’ve gota 3DS and Wii U to save for.

But I do hope it’s successful, too. I have all reason to believe it will be. MK sold gangbusters for WB, as did Arkham City. Combining the DC properties with a well-known party like Netherrealm sounds like a guaranteed success to me. I just hope they expand into things beyond fighters with its success. I’d like to see a Green Arrow game. Would jive with his recent uptick in popularity, too.

          • puchinri

Exactly. Wii U + con + games is so expensive. I’m trying to find a second job or go for my teaching credential and improve my situation a bit.

I really, really want a WW game. I know DC themselves (higher-ups anyway) don’t even care about her really, but there are so many cool, potential routes you could go (Bayo/DMC/GoW styled games, SRPGs that take place on Themyscira, etc).

          • Solomon_Kano

I think WW could work. I had an idea for a huge WW game some years ago, but WB doesn’t really seem interested in that character. Then again, they don’t seem interested in most of their characters.

          • puchinri

Yeah. Especially if the character is a minority at all. But even with their other characters, it’s hard for them to be interested if it’s not Hal Jorden, Supes or Bats.

          • Solomon_Kano

Which really sucks. Hal isn’t even the coolest Lantern…

    • @puchinri:disqus @Solomon_Kano:disqus Btw, if you guys want to see the “Evil Justice League” concept done really well, check out the Justice League: Doom animated movie. :)

EDIT: wait, no. Wrong movie. I’m talking about Crisis on Infinite Earths.

      • Solomon_Kano

I actually mentioned that just now, too! Ha. It was really well done, though I’m kinda disappointed that they replaced Ra’s Al Ghul.

If you haven’t seen it, you should also watch the Justice Lords episode of the Justice League cartoon and the Crisis on Two Earths animated movie. Both good takes on the concept.

        • Yup, I’ve watched all of those! The Justice Lords episode was awesome. It was a convincing premise, too, the reason they cited for the League basically becoming this fascist group in that other dimension.

About the Doom movie, I loved the ending scene for that, when they vote Batman out of the League.

          • Solomon_Kano

That scene had my favorite Batman line ever, in the 2 decades since Kevin Conroy’s been voicing him. His response to the team being surprised that he’d do it the same if he had it to do over again being that they were “damn fools” if they wouldn’t do the same was priceless.

That was the first of DC’s animated films that really felt like a continuation of what we got in the DCAU. Doesn’t hurt that most of the JL voice actors reprised their roles for the film.

Edit: Ah, now it makes sense. That was the late great Dwayne McDuffie’s last DC film. He wrote that and played a major part in the DCAU.

          • Yup, I felt the exact same way. It felt like a continuation of the old Animated Universe because all the voice actors came back. I love the art style for Doom and Crisis on Infinite Earths, too. It’s a little bit more detailed than the AU but not overly realistic.

The final scene of that movie is fantastic, too, where Superman hands over the Kryptonite bullet. That was beautiful. They expressed the faith he has in Batman in such few words.

          • Solomon_Kano

I don’t know if you’ve caught any of it, but the style they’ve been using for most of the movies following Under the Red Hood is the same art style they’ve used for Young Justice. Best quality art they’ve had in a TV show since Bruce Timm’s first Batman show, for my money. I really like that style.

That scene embodied everything I like about seeing those two work together. I’m not the biggest fan of the Justice League as a whole, but I love seeing Batman and Superman team up. It’s a pity that Superman/Batman: Apocalypse movie sucked. Still haven’t seen Public Enemies, though I own the comic it adapted.

          • Yeah, I noticed they used the same style for Young Justice. I was super happy about that. Sadly, like you just said, it’s been cancelled…

Urgh. I’m really, really bummed out. I follow this show religiously every week. What the hell, man. I wish companies would get their shit together and come up with a viable format for TV series so they aren’t at the mercy of broadcasters. We’ve had so many premature cancellations of great shows.

          • Solomon_Kano

Seriously. I find it funny that Teen Titans got cancelled, then Young Justice came on, Young Justice gets cancelled, and now Teen Titans is coming back. At least I get some good out of this, being that TT was good. But, man. Sucks.

      • puchinri

Yeah, we saw CoIE when it first came out and loved it. They compressed the original storyline pretty well too. I prefer it over the comic version. Lately, DC’s animations have been awesome, but they could do to get rid of some of their ideals that leak over and affect it negatively (deciding that WW didn’t “do well enough” so cancelling Batgirl, when GL did worse and still got an animated series, etc).

  • Richard N

So much Batman focus and I’m still a little iffy with soo many Batman related characters in general. Give me Supergirl dammit!~

    • 果林

      yes this^

    • Rolling Guy

      I want Powergirl.

  • Solomon_Kano

So… we get to see alternate costumes for Lex, Diana, and Slade. Cool.

    The dialogue though?

“The bad people got what they deserved.”

*sigh* I mean, I knew I wouldn’t go into this thinking about the story as soon as they announced what it was, but at least make it well-written. Again though, I’ll just have to suspend all thought and enjoy the sheer sight of seeing all of these DC characters together like I’ve wanted for years. I hope there’s still more in the game though, because this roster is pretty skimpy. Still crossing my fingers for Black Adam and Jaime Reyes’ Blue Beetle.

    • Wasn’t it Superman saying that? I thought it sounded like he was simplifying it on purpose. You know, like mourning the days when things were simpler and they just beat up the crooks and locked them away.

      • Solomon_Kano

Was it? I have no idea what he sounds like in this game, so I didn’t know who was doing the voiceover.

If it was him, I dunno that he’d be lamenting anything. The trailer indicates that he and Bats are on opposite sides here — and that Bats’ side is the good one.

        • Yeah, it’s confusing, isn’t it? I’m wondering if there’s some alternate dimension craziness going on here. They’re being smart about how they roll the story out, hahaha.

          • Solomon_Kano

They really are. I feel like this might be one of those situations where the story ends up entirely different from what we’re led to believe. Because, seriously, this trailer didn’t give us anything that hasn’t been in a plot synopsis. It just put a twist on it lol.

          • Yeah, if there’s one thing DC/Warner are good about, it’s handling their games and animated movies really well in the story department. They’ve been doing a far better job than Marvel on both those fronts, even though Marvel are ahead in the movie department.

          • Solomon_Kano

Definitely. DC’s animation is on a whole other tier, and it’s been that way for a whole 2 decades now (even if they did just cancel Young Justice and Green Lantern TAS :/). So I definitely hope this leans more towards the quality of their animated work than their films. Because that would be sad.

          • Wait, what? Young Justice is cancelled? When did this happen?!

Edit: Just saw it. Awww shit, that sucks! This was the best animated TV show they’ve done since Batman Beyond!

          • Solomon_Kano

Seriously. You don’t even know how disappointed I am by the news. At the least, DC’s preparing two more shows for this year. Still sucks though.

          • Solomon_Kano

I want to sign these. I really do. But this is a change that goes beyond names. Names don’t guarantee ratings, so I don’t see WB falling for this. Or maybe I’m just cynical because I know how much petitions did for Firefly. :V

I can make due with YJ and GL ending so long as Beware the Batman and Teen Titans GO! deliver as their replacements.

          • Considering that I was aware and hyped for these shows before they even premiered on the basis that I enjoy this one Teen Titans/Outsiders compilation I read back when I was 23 and Green Lantern is the shitnaz—however not being able to watch them due to not having cable or being too busy to find them online—it’s kind of depressing. And from the tidbits of of both of those shows I have seen they both are really really well done.

          • Solomon_Kano

I don’t have cable either, so I watch YJ online. I never got past GL’s pilot (Hal Jordan lol), but I’ve been meaning to get back to it.

I can link you to the site I use, if you’d like.

          • Yes peez. :3

          • Solomon_Kano
          • Yay thank you! >w<
Also Jackson Hyde Aqualad is best Aqualad…but Garth is still pretty awesome.

          • Solomon_Kano

I know that he’s based on YJ’s Aqualad (though Hyde actually debuted first), but are they anything alike? I haven’t read any comics with him or Garth, since I never bothered with Aquaman. I’m familiar with the Garth that appeared in YJ and Teen Titans, but not Garth in the comics. Always liked his costume though lol.

            And no prob.

          • Not familiar with any of the comics version just the cartoon versions. From watching the older cartoons when I was younger on Cartoon Network and the USA channel (which makes me sound incredibly old), the first Aqualad was kinda lame….but Garth and Jackson were cool. Also the newer version of Aquaman just makes him seem boss as hell…and akin to the movie version of Thor as in “beat the hell out of everything first, and then ask questions later”. Also self amputation of hand to save a baby and getting a spear hand, that kind a bumps your badassery level up abit.

          • Solomon_Kano

On USA? You’re probably about as old as my uncle lol.

Spearhand Aquaman was always the coolest! It sucks that he only showed up in Justice League Unlimited like once or twice. That’s the only version of him I know, apart from that time he showed up in Superman TAS (which is the same Aquaman, of course, just no hook) and his YJ version.

          • I’m under 30, cut me some slack yo xD (well besides all the health issues atm). He actually showed up Justice League a few times besides his appearances in JL Unlimited. And yup remember him in Superman, he looked really cool then even though it was a revamped version of his older look. Still kicked Supe’s ass though. Also seeing the Flash in that one episode was cool too, wish more hero appearances were like that with Batman even though we did get Jonah Hex before I knew who he was. Yes I am nerding out abit more.

          • Solomon_Kano

Yep, still about as old as my uncle lol. I liked that Superman had more appearances from other folks, but I will say that Batman’s Jonah Hex episode beat out all of them. An entire focused on Hex battling Ra’s Al Ghul is pretty hard to top! Didn’t know that Aquaman showed up in JL too. For most of that show’s duration I was out of the country, though I did catch all of JLU. Nerding out is good every now and then haha.

          • And don’t get me wrong, I’ve been looking forward to Beware the Batman since I first heard about it back in 2011, but I didn’t think WB would be taking out YG and GL for it and Teen Titans Go!.

          • Solomon_Kano

To be clear, they aren’t taking them out for the two new shows. The two new shows will be taking over their spots now that both are cancelled. As I understood it, the original plan was simply to expand DC Nation. Instead it ended up like this.

          • Sorry that’s kinda of what I meant, but that’s how it seems is being done to give them more priority and attention. As far as I was aware of there was suppose to be another season of Young Justice, but it doesn’t seen that way now at this point.

          • Solomon_Kano

There probably was. I know Bruce Timm definitely had bigger plans for GL. But with the numerous times YJ went on hiatus and the DC Nation’s whole block disappearing for a while, I figured this was going to happen.

Timm’s moving on to other things now, but I wanna know where YJ’s people are going. Greg Weisman is my favorite man in cartoons other than Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Lab, Samurai Jack) so I hope he doesn’t go on another long disappearance like he did when Disney cancelled Gargoyles.

          • That explains why the characters have that much depth to them even for a Superhero cartoon, and hopefully Weisman finds work again soon. Bruce Timm could do a cartoon about toast and I would probably watch it. I was holding out for the Batgirl cartoon btw, I saw too much concept work for that I liked how they were going back to the original versions of a lot of the villains that would appear. Stage actor Clayface would have been awesome.

          • Solomon_Kano

Seriously, anything Bruce Timm does just sings. I’d have liked a Batgirl show too. That short CG tease at the end of Brave and the Bold got me so hyped lol. That episode of TAS where Batman “beat” Clayface by driving him crazy from looking at all his past roles is one of my favorite scenes in anything ever. If that show could’ve had that Clayface again, I’d have been so happy. Plus, a Batgirl show could’ve had an episode or two written by Gail Simone. That’d be cool.

Well, I guess I’ll just keep my fingers crossed that Super Best Friends Forever gets bumped up to a full show like TT GO! did.

          • kylehyde

Poor Greg Weisman, is really cursed. He is talented but none of his series last more than 2 seasons (Gargoyles, ok that one have three, but he wasn’t involved witht the horrible third season, W.I.T.C.H, Spectacular Spiderman and Young Justice). I heard that main reason of why Cartoon decided to not renew young justice was becuase the merchandise related to it (toys and whatever stuff) didn’t sell well, even if the ratings were on the ok zone.

          • Solomon_Kano

Technically, Goliath Chronicles was a new show. I had no idea Weisman was involved with W.I.T.C.H. I would’ve watched it if I knew.

Hopefully, it’s not too long before he gets involved in something new. Nice-sized gap between the end of Gargoyles and W.I.T.C.H. coming on.

      • Ty Arnold

Pretty sure Cyborg was talking during that line.

        • Oh? That’s interesting then. Gah, can’t wait to see how this all plays out.

  • Tee Niitris

    Two words…
    Bad… Ass…

If this was a movie, this I would pay money for day one. Alas, it’s not; its a video game. So hopefully they do more (to let their personalities shine) than having an impressive story.

  • Jordan Coleman

Mortal Kombat was great. I’m hoping this delivers a similar awesome single player and well the trailer sure hyped me up.

  • Tokoat

Anyone else notice Hal Jordan wearing a Sinestrop Corp outfit in the scene where he confronts Batman and the scene where he throws Batman’s mask onto a table?

  • anthony apduhan

I shed my tears on that trailer…

  • You know it’s good to see more people on here getting hyped about this game, that in itself brings a tear to my eye. Now to get everyone on board to petition Cartoon Network to not cancel Young Justice and Green Lantern.

  • TheExile285

Wow, the story looms pretty good
