Nintendo Subsidiary, Brownie Brown, Changes Name To 1-Up Studio

By Ishaan . February 1, 2013 . 9:24am

Nintendo subsidiary, Brownie Brown, are undergoing some changes. Brownie Brown, a studio best known for its involvement in Mother 3 has also worked on various similar interesting projects in recent years, most notably the London Life mode in Professor Layton and the Last Specter and Level 5’s Fantasy Life RPG.

Additionally, Brownie Brown also helped Nintendo out with Super Mario 3D Land, and it sounds like they have other projects that they’re working on together as well, going by a message on the studio’s website. In order to better focus on their co-development efforts with Nintendo, Brownie Brown are undergoing a change in internal structure.

Part of this change involves renaming the studio. The name “Brownie Brown” has been replaced with “1-UP Studio” and the company will be restarted. Also as part of the change, the Brownie Brown website will be taken down on March 31st.

Brownie Brown were established in 2000. In addition to Nintendo and Level 5, they also worked with Marvelous on Livly Garden and Blue Dragon Plus with Mistwalker.

Since Nintendo wants to start bringing more Japanese games to the states, they could start with this.

    • Nobody buys games from a company with a name that “stinks”.

      • MrRobbyM

Well that ruins the name for me.

      • Suicunesol

Well, we all know where your mind is, but to me Brownie Brown reminds me of Charlie Brown, or gnomes/dwarves known as brownies. It’s a really humble yet admirable name.

        • Shane Guidaboni

It makes me think of the color brownies are.

          • ronin4life

It makes me think ALL those things you three said…

        • Farid Belkacemi

Brownie Brown reminds me of chocolate… And I LOVE chocolate :D

        • puchinri

After I knew what Brownies were (in part because of them), that’s the only thing I could think of whenever I saw the name. (Or the word even, usually.)

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      …I hope

  • landlock

This was the studio made up of old Mana deveopers wasn’t it?

    • Yerld_CK

With Shinichi Kameoka leaving, it’s the end of an era. Tomoki Anazawa, Takeo Oin, and Nobuyuki Inoue already moved on a while back, so the core has completely split up.

      • puchinri

Wait, from the team at Brownie Brown? Or from SQ?

        • Yerld_CK

From Brownie Brown. It’s no longer the same place, which makes it a good time to refocus their personnel toward something different.

For a Nintendo-owned company, it was always odd that Brownie Brown never received more support. Back in the day, Nobuyuki Inoue was always scared about the company going under (shortly after Magical Vacation, one of his antics was to go on their message board and create a fake rumor about a new project using his official account. The next day, he was forced to apologize for “immature behavior”)…..he even claimed that Square Enix saved them with the Sword of Mana contract – they didn’t have a new project with Nintendo, and the funds were running out.

          • puchinri

Ahh. When did they leave? And when did he announce that he’s leaving?

Have they said anything about how they feel on their NDS projects? (They have more and a couple are related to well to do series, so I’m curious if that helped at all.)

    • puchinri

Oh, was it? That would make sense.
edit : Wikipedia seems to say that it is indeed them.

  • I hope this means more stuff from them. They’re pretty effing awesome.

  • Not gonna lie, the name change is definitely an improvement.

    • Edzo

its weird that anyone can think that

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

1-Up Studio huh…that means its never going to die

    • NRool

Let’s hope so, I love Brownie Brown, and it’d be a shame for them to have to call it quits

  • Junko Enoshima

Hopefully, they’ll celebrate this change with a Mother 3 Localization…;)

    • puchinri

I would rather have Magical vacation to be honest, only because I don’t feel like it gets as much love from the West (compared to the work that M3 gets) and it’s a game they developed on their own and is thus their project and not someone else’s.

      • Junko Enoshima

Oh, I’ve always wanted to play that! Someone recommended Magical Starsign to me, and it was quite good. I bet a Vacation localization would be good as well :)

        • puchinri

Yeah, I found Starsign by chance, but in part because of a Vacation fansite. I’m glad we got it and that I played it. Hopefully we can see Magical Vacation localized some day~.

  • ronin4life

Still haven’t imported FL yet, despite really wanting to…
And now recent comments made by Nintendo make me think I should wait. Hmm……

  • Ethan_Twain

This is good! This name change suggests that Nintendo looks to put Brownie Brown on more first party games (rather than having them work in concert with third parties on projects like Fantasy Life and Professor Layton). And why is it good that they’re gonna work on more first party software? Because they got a level design credit in Super Mario 3D Land, which incidentally had the best level design in a Mario game since the SNES. If this means more Mario out of the studio, I’m 100% behind it.

And considering that the next 3D Mario game looks to be fast tracked to be playable by E3 I wouldn’t be at ALL surprised to learn that’s the project they’re currently working on.

  • Tom_Phoenix

They should have named themselves “7-UP Studio”. Then they would have a cool theme song by default.

    • I see what you did there, well played. Also the Cool Spot game was actually pretty good.

  • puchinri

I’ve always liked Brownie Brown and the work they do (Magical Starsign is fun, and I still want to play Magical Vacation), so even though it’s sad to see them lose such a cute and clever name, it’s cool to see them still working and even restructuring. I look forward to what will come~.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I hope that the new names here will actually means like the name lol. 1-Up?
So they are going to keep pumping out game eternally right?^_^

  • NRool

Brownie Brown are probably my favourite Nintendo subsidiary, and whilst I think the name change isn’t needed, I guess it’s not that big a deal, as long as they keep producing amazing content <3
