By Ishaan . February 19, 2013 . 7:02pm

Shin Megami Tensei IV has a release date in Japan, and it’s sooner than you might have thought. The game will be available on May 23rd, according to a Famitsu magazine report spotted at Ruliweb.

Additionally, a limited edition Nintendo 3DS XL (pictured above) will be available on the same date with the game pre-installed. Finally, first-print copies of the game will include a “sound and art collection” bonus.

Famitsu will be releasing one of their special “DX” packs for Shin Megami Tensei IV as well. You can learn more about the game using its tag.

  • Not a fan of white, but damn this is one of the sexiest 3DS’ I’ve ever seen.

    • deaththekid

Amen to that brother! Wow it looks awesome!

  • Zeidge

Oh YHVH, I hope this gets out of Japan as well.

Although I wish it would be “comes with a copy of the game” instead of
“comes with game pre-installed” like what all the bundles are becoming.

    • If it does come out of Japan, i would be tempted if it wasn’t a digital copy only, so I can understand.

  • Zarx

If this limited edition XL is coming out in North America then I’ll probably just wait it out instead of buying the ones that are out at the moment.

    • Nah I want hard copy. I’ll just buy the Fire Emblem 3DS bundle now. I want a black XL I would have gotten this if it werent pre installed

      • Zarx

If I remember correctly the XL bundle also has the game pre-installed, I may be wrong though.
As much as I love hard copy this is one of those instances where I don’t mind not having it, maybe I’m just extremely lazy but being able to switch between this game which I’ll most likely play repeat playthroughs of and whatever cartridge I have at the moment is pretty convenient.

      • LonelyGuardian

I felt this way for a long time until I downloaded FE: Awakening. It’s nice to have easy access to an amazing game, and have a different physical game as well for the portable.

    • Red + Black = DEAaaam.

      • Zarx

That would be sick as hell.

      • deaththekid

And I just bought the Pikachu 3DS a month ago :/

        • PABLO Rapetti Perez

Shin Megami Tensei IV will grow old, Pikachu is Eternal!

      • Kefkiroth

The Soul Sacrifice Vita is red and black. Would definitely get it if I hadn’t already gotten a Vita.

        • PoweredByHentai

If this Vita ever becomes a reality, I would gladly buy it even if I already have a Vita.

          • Nice taste I see XD Wht game is tht character frm?

          • Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. Her name’s Vita~ :P

          • Ha! Thk 4 the info.

          • PoweredByHentai

That character is called Vita. She is from the Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha series; first appearance is in Nanoha A’s.

  • What am I going to do if these limited edition 3DS XLs all come here…
    It’s gorgeous.

    • Detrimont

obviously buy it before it gets sold out, which it will if it does come overseas

  • TiredOfMyOldUsername

Come on NOA do the good thing and bring that to NA.
    You know you want to.

    • puchinri

      You mean Atlus? ouo;

      • TiredOfMyOldUsername

        No i mean NOA.
If NOA don’t want to bring the limited edition here even if Atlus want they won’t be able to do it.

        • Zeik56

Yeah, without Nintendo actually turning it into a US compatible 3DS there’s not much Atlus can do. Unfortunately that probably makes the chance of it happening slim to nil, as NoA likely doesn’t give a crap about SMT.

          • Fire EmblemXShin Megami Tensei yo.

          • Zeik56

That’s a very different situation than a LE 3DS. Especially because Fire Emblem is their own property, so they have cause to support it.

          • Well they are trying to drive sales in the West. If SMT X FE is big enough on the U then more reason to bring it over eventually

          • Zeik56

If SMTxFE were to come out first (or even within like a few months) I could maybe see it happening, but we likely won’t see SMTxFE until well after SMT4, and I don’t see them deciding to release a 3DS that much later.

          • SMTIV out in may 6 months to localize perhaps. We’ll have more info by then

  • Total_Overdose

I want that 3ds so bad!

  • imaguni

Oh man that 3DS XL looks amazing. Getting SMTIV outside of Japan would be great enough but I’d totally splurge on that…

    • Zeik56

SMT4 is already pretty much a sure thing. The 3DS is a lot less likely.

      • imaguni

        I can dream…

  • Zeik56

I would so buy that if it came here. Although part of me hopes it doesn’t so I don’t have to spend the money.

I don’t really like the idea of having it pre-installed either. I’d rather own the physical version.

  • Richard N

Those lucky mutha ***kers!! That thing looks sick!

Well I suppose this means it can’t be that long of a wait for the rest of us.

  • Gabi López Ramírez

I would purchase the LE 3DS AND a copy of the game if the hardware is brought overseas too. :)

    • This. I’m not a fan of pre-installed copies, but damn, I wouldn’t mind getting this while also buying a separate hard-copy too just to complete the set.

  • Matthew Baucom

Is a 3ds XL worth it? cause I own a 3ds already im just wondering should i upgrade or just stick with my 3ds?
Btw this is a gorgeous 3DSXL

    • Get both they each have their merits. The XL is really nice up close and personal

    • If you want a bigger screen and longer battery life(I believe), then go right ahead and get it. But other than that, there are no differences.

  • $24431191

    so much want.

  • :o I sure hope this is coming to the west, it makes my waiting for an XL meaningful. lol

  • Farid Belkacemi

    Dat 3DS… AMAZING !

  • MentalAlliance

That really is sooner than I was expecting, which means it gets to come here quicker than I most likely would have guessed! Exciting!

  • wasad

This is what I’ve been waiting for, a custom 3DSXL Bundle! Hopefully this bundle can make its way to the West.

  • Natat

Whoa that 3DS looks soooo sick…

  • Junko Enoshima

That 3DS is HOT. Why did I have to buy a blue 3DS when it came out? :'(

  • Detrimont

wanting the 3ds xl but it won’t come stateside let alone PAL regions

  • Clearly: Japan, the land where every new 3DS game its own unique and exclusive 3DS console.

    • Exaggeration obviously, but it is not far off. xD

      • It’s not an exaggeration when comparing it against NA exclusive releases. :(
I don’t know who sucked who to get the Fire Emblem 3DS here, but I don’t think anyone was expecting it.
That, and where the HELL is a green system?? No one likes the color green. D:

        Forest Green 3DS. I’d buy 8.

        • LinkofCourage

You would think there would be a green 3DS or XL announced already, being the year of Luigi and all.

        • Koulamatata

Green is my favourite colour, so i’d be down for it.
I waited for a green Gamecube… it never happened.
They originally showed the Wii in green… it never saw the light of day.

Just give us some sort of green console. Lol.

  • PaulMeat

Ooooooh! Looks great! I think I’ll import this one!

  • Ninten

    Approved by Lucifer, it seems.

  • Pockystix

I’m prolly gonna wind up owning two 3DSs lol

  • Do Want!

  • Niyari

now THAT would be a good enough reason for me to pick up a 3DS. too bad it likely isn’t coming to the West.

    • Link

Atlus has been very good at localizing there games as of late. With all the recent 3DS support from them here in the west and the upcoming SMT x FE coming here as well its almost a given that SMT IV is coming.

      • Niyari

oh no no no, i meant the 3DS bundle. it’s pretty much a given that Atlus will bring the game over. :p

    • Ethan_Twain

Untrue, untrue! Considering that Atlus USA is willing to do Soul Hackers in the US (a project with a smaller audience) and also since SMT IV is already confirmed to be released in Korea and Taiwan I think US localization for SMT IV is all but certain. Considering the May release date, it might actually make it out within the year even. That’s a little bit of a stretch… but a 7 month turnaround between Japanese and US releases is hardly unheard of for them.

    • The game certainly will but the bundle likely won’t.

  • Shadowman

Oh snap! That design is so dope!

  • THAT is one sexy hardware, damn. And I thought the Zelda and Fire Emblem 3DS’ looked good.

  • $39420547

i am hoping that this will get out of japan devil survivor got out oi japan and with Fire Emblem X Shin Megami Tensei being in development i think it’s a series they will really push to the west

  • Koulamatata

    Please come to Canada!

  • Jisgsaw

Okay, wanted to buy a Japanese 3DS anyway, this will probably be it :)

Any idea when it will be up to preorder ? And how limited it will be… :s ?

  • SeventhEvening

If that comes to Korea, I will buy it. I don’t have a 3DS yet, and that makes me interested in taking the leap.
