This is it everyone. Nintendo and Sony at war 24/7
Too bad this is just for Japan though

    • Lightthrower

The way I see it is that Nintendo should concentrate on handhelds because they’ve always been the best at that, but should not make another console after WiiU (kinda like Sega).

      • Locklear93

        I’d support that.

      • Suicunesol

I think it should be the opposite, man. Phones are taking over. 3DS is doing okay now, but in the future phones and tablets will eliminate dedicated handhelds. Growth is severely limited in this area.

When handhelds are gone, consoles are all that Nintendo has left. But they’re not doing very well on that front either, are they… :/

If Nintendo doesn’t make another console, they’ll basically lose all relevance in the west. Handhelds aren’t taken seriously there.

        • Sylveria

For phones to really take-over hand-held gaming as “gamers” know it, the phone developers would need to allow for more freedom for developers to make bigger, deeper experiences. That would require a fundemental shift from the stranglehold that most notably Apple keeps on app development.

There’d also need to be some major leaps forward in touch-screen only game-controls.

          • Lightthrower

Yeah phones are too casual-ish. I couldn’t see Fire Emblem on a phone or a Shin Megami title.

          • AntonioPeYangIII

            Monster Hunter on a smartphone.

          • Suicunesol

I don’t think the west wants bigger, deeper experiences on handhelds. If you want those, you can find them on home consoles. The fact that casual games on phones are doing so well shows that the handheld audience much prefers cheap casual games.

          • Sylveria

Clearly there’s still significant demand from a “hard-core” western audience for hand-held gaming with some meat to it.

If the DS/3DS was floundering due to lack of interest (and not stupid pricing and lack of software like the Vita) and there were more than a small handful of largely financially successful iPhone games, I’d say your position has some weight. But the reality of things does not support your thesis.

          • Suicunesol

Yes, of course, there’s still a western audience for handheld gaming with meat to it. This site and our own presence on this site is evidence of that.
The question is if that audience is large enough to warrant making those kinds of games on handhelds over consoles. Japan, yes definitely. Anywhere else? Hard to say. 3DS is currently doing fine. I can’t say the same for future dedicated devices, because the phones of the future seem just so powerful.

        • komiko12

If you ask me the handheld consoles are also increasing in functionality.. the 3DS has a camera, web browser, music player and apps… perhaps the next gen handhelds would have even more functionality that can rival smartphones to an extent…

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I kinda disagree here considering that Gamecube and N64 actually bring a lot of great game here.
As long as they gain profit from Wii U even if it is not a lot, i hope they will continue the home console business after all, without Wii U, we won’t get Bayonneta 2 and of course new “X”

        • Lightthrower

Nintendo can still make games like Sega for the other consoles and about Bayonetta and “X”, they could’ve been on other consoles too. I know that Nintendo paid to get Bayonetta, but if that didn’t get made, it would’ve been another IP, maybe even better. Monolith Soft made games for PS2 before so they could go back to PS4.

          • Why? They left because they were in a bad situation. duh.

          • Solomon_Kano

Nintendo has partial ownership of Monolith, I believe. They aren’t going ANYWHERE.

          • Who thinks they should buy Platinum?

          • Solomon_Kano

            I think not.

I love Platinum and I’m very happy to see them on the Wii U, but I love them in their independence. PS360 owners spent this gen with Vanquish, Bayo, and Anarchy Reigns. Now Nintendo gamers get a taste of how awesome Platinum is with Bayo 2 and The Wonderful 101. I think they’re one of those developers so awesome that they shouldn’t really be attached to one platform. I can’t see Rising having happened if Nintendo owned Platinum, for instance. Kojima wouldn’t have made that offer.

They and Grasshopper are the last people really making unique action games, and I think it would be a loss to make those experiences available to less people rather than more.

          • MogCakes

That’s also how I feel about FromSoftware. I prefer them to be independent and not handcuffed to another company (Bamco…)

          • Nintendo owns Monolith Soft.

      • Nah their console after the Wii U is going to be ground breaking with innovation and forward thinking in the future of gaming consoles. Sony’s content with letting ninty do the innovation for them whilst hounding their curtails and eating up the dudebro and fakegamergirl markets. Sony also has otakus hooked up to their mainframe.

The mobile games are for a short quick burst of time gaming platform(even as technology permits them to be longer the battery life will not) they are also limited by their design to be multipurpose , their main function is to be used for communication.

        • MogCakes

Every comment of yours I’ve read has basically been pro-Ninty, anti-Sony. I love Nintendo too man, but come on.

          • Because I keep reading foolishness everywhere. I have a Ps3 for Jrpgs, thats about it. I moved to handhelds anyway,Gaming machines should focus on primarily playing games. I feel like playing Skies of Arcadia.

          • MogCakes

I can see where you’re coming from, but Ninty’s added media features to the Wii U as well, so they should be receiving the same kind of flack for that if you’re going to knock Sony on it.

      • Solomon_Kano

I’ll have to disagree on them not making another console. Perhaps Nintendo’s consoles haven’t been the most successful since Sony jumped in, but Nintendo’s very existence led to a lot of the things that made Sony’s consoles what they were. Hell, Nintendo is the reason Sony made the Playstation after their partnership fell through.

If anybody drops out of the console market, I’d prefer it be Microsoft. Sony and Nintendo offer very distinct experiences in terms of both their hardware and their software. This is true in both the console and portable markets. The Xbox has little to offer in the way of uniqueness. What sets it apart from the Playstation so much as to justify it staying around and Nintendo leaving?

That said, I don’t want anybody to go as I think it’s nice that consumers have so many options, but if anybody leaves the console market. it definitely shouldn’t be Ninty.

  • Oh no, that mean it’ll be at 6AM here… and I wanted to sleep today.

  • kylehyde

Is going to be 5 a.m. for me. Well I don’t have to job tomorrow so I can wake up early, get hype for an hour, fall sleep after that, wake up atl 11 a.m. and have breakfast with waffles, bacon and honey.

    • …I wish I had your life.

      • Christopher Nunes

        Same here. XD

      • Solomon_Kano

I just want his breakfast lol.

        • Seriously. It sounds so unhealthy and delicious.

          • Solomon_Kano

Right? All I ever get is the unhealthy part lol. Pop Tarts just don’t cut it anymore, man!

      • …I have his life, I think. ?_?

    • Lightthrower

      Waffles AND bacon? o_O

  • Suicunesol

I’m secretly hoping that NoA will do a third-party Nintendo Direct too, and will announce it within the hour. And then they’ll announce Bravely Default for worldwide release.

    • Or, as part of their localization plan, they’ll localize every game in the JP direct.

  • Solomon_Kano

6AM? Hm. Well, I’ll be awake anyway. Let’s see what Ninty brings this time.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

      7:PM here. YUHUUUUUU/^_^

      • Solomon_Kano

        Lucky lol.

  • Wow. xD Well 5am is a bit early.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

What’s going on today here? O.o It seems both Nintendo and Sony is going all out keep firing cannon on each other.^_^(This kinda makes me remember the old time when Sega vs Nintendo where both of them keep attacking each other by releasing new games one and another. Welp, i can’t even imagine if Sega is still alive here.)

Hoped for many new game titles.^_^ Especially rpg.^_^ More info about Yatagarasu and Metal Slug would also be great.

    • Sylveria

      Nintendoes what Sony don’t.

    • Oh how far the mighty have fallen. Firing off pointless lawsuits at Level-5. Sony Vs Nintendo would have been a much better plotline for Aoi Chushin Sekai de

    • Elemiel

Your post makes me wish for a picture of personified Sony and Nintendo being tsun-tsun to each other.

    • s07195

      Metal Slug, yeah!

  • Christopher Nunes

I hope we get a Nintendo Direct in American too to announce more 3DS games! I’m looking forward to certain 3DS games being brought over stateside! ^_^

    Two to be precise!

But I’m curious to see what’s going to be announced in Japan, I’m looking forward to these new third-party games!

  • so is that 6 am est?

    • Solomon_Kano

  • Zenthos

Just recently checked the upcoming games for the 3ds, added with the possible localization of games coming to the console, and my god. The 3ds is a rpg power house, for only 40$ per game in excellent quality (with art books from atlus as a bonus). Now THAT is what im talking about!

  • Not as excited for this one as half the games shown will probably never make it outside Japan. Guess I could dream, though.

    • puchinri

I think we’ve had some pretty fair luck with a number of 3DS titles making it over so far, but it is likely that there will be a few we don’t see.

  • I’d advise everyone to keep their hopes levelled. They’ll probably just talk about existing games that have already been announced and are slated for release in the coming months.

    • ronin4life

Hell, I would be fine with MH4 stuff… especially if there will be a demo. ^.^
But I think we can expect something new. It has ben awhile, and the last one was well and above what most expected with only 1st party titles.

    • The last couple of Nintendo Directs have been pretty damn great…nothing can contain the hype until we get another average Nintendo Direct.
