Square Talk Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Expansion Plans, Baby Behemoth

By Ishaan . February 22, 2013 . 4:25pm

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn producer-cum-director, Naoki Yoshida, recently conducted a live video Q&A, where he answered questions from fans. Square Enix are working on making the Q&A recording available for viewing, but in the meantime, they’ve summarized the answers to various questions that were addressed during the Q&A. Some of the more interesting ones are listed below, and you can read the full set of them here.

Perhaps most interesting—but not surprising—is that Square plan to release both major periodical updates as well as full-fledged expansion packs for Final Fantasy XIV: A Real Reborn. They’re looking to release the first expansion to the game within two years of launch, and prior to that, will be rolling out major updates as downloads every two-and-half months.

Oh, and Yoshida also talks about the baby Behemoth he teased last month.

Q7: Will we be able to listen to background music that was used in 1.0 in A Realm Reborn?

A7: While we don’t have plans to have this for launch, in the future we think it would be cool to introduce a jukebox type of feature for housing where you can listen to your favorite songs.

Q9: You mentioned previously that you’re working to include summoner in time for launch. Is it going to make it?

A9: Yes, it will!

Q11: Could you tell us any information about possible new classes/jobs like thief, ninja, samurai, musketeer?

A11: We feel that their is a lack of scout and caster type of classes. Our overseas players continue to mention ninja and samurai, but we realize that we need a good variety of jobs!

Q14: You showed a screenshot of train tracks. Will players be able to ride on trains in A Realm Reborn?

A14: Stay tuned! By the way, train tracks will also be available in other locations, too!

Q22: Please tell us more about chocobo raising!

A22: We’ll first be releasing housing, but you’ll be able to set up a chocobo stable and purchase a baby chocobo to raise. Once you have a chocobo stable you will also be able to do things like breed chocobos and train them.

Q28: Will we be able to fight giant monsters such as the adamantoise that appears in the benchmark video?

A28: The benchmark video contains content that was specially created for PR-purposes, but you will be able to fight giant monsters starting from phase 1 of the Beta Test. Experience it for yourself and let us know if you want to fight something even bigger!

Q35: Will Gilgamesh appear in FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn?

A35: Yes, we have plans to introduce Gilgamesh through a series of quests. The quests will most likely be introduced in stages.

Q36: Will it be possible in the future to change our character’s appearance once they have been created?

A36: We’re thinking it would be possible for hairstyles, hair color, and eye color. We’ve already mentioned about a beauty parlor, so it should be possible to show you all soon.

Q38: In terms of new races, what kind of races are you looking into and will mixed races be introduced?

A38: I don’t think we’ll have mixed races for a while. Since it seems like Viera is popular around the world we have been proactively looking into this, but since having a rabbit male might be kind of weird, maybe we’ll look into having a separate race for the male counterpart.

Q40: This might be a bit early to ask, but could you tell us any plans for an expansion?

A40: As we just mentioned before about the addition of a new race, we are looking into this for the first expansion, which we would like to release within two years of launch.

Q43: I remember you showed us artwork that had a baby behemoth on New Year’s day. How does that work?

A43: Basically they are pets that you can bring along with you. These pets will be referred to as “minions.” We are planning to introduce a variety of minions so stay tuned! Also, these minions are items and that means players will be able to trade minions with other players.

Q45: How often are you planning to update the game after the official release of A Realm Reborn? Also, will you be introducing mini-scenarios not tied to the main scenario during these updates?

A45: We are currently planning to introduce major updates once every 2 and a half months. As far as mini-scenario goes, yes, we will be implementing mini-scenarios as well. Gilgamesh, which we introduced earlier, will be introduced through a mini-scenario.

  • DuskSharkEX

I always wanted a per behemoth.

  • Sylveria

If only they cared this much about FF14 the first time it launched.

    • Ace

    • Corey Owens

Better late than never. Also, XIV was actually pretty great toward the end of 1.0. With the direction it’s going now, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it making its stay.

    • That’s just it though. If they did, then we wouldn’t have the epic that it’s turning out to be today lol

    • MogCakes

New director. The old one did not care so much, and has been fired. Blame him.

  • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

Man, I really really wish they would put this level of effort into a single player RPG…

    (also female only Viera trollololololololol)

    • MogCakes

They could, but considering none of the single player FF games have made them anywhere near as much profit as XI, can you blame them for putting their all into ARR?

      • seyEliveD

On the other hand, did any other FF game lose as much money as the first iteration of FF14?

        • CirnoLakes

All the more reason they need to fix it.

This is a huge risk, huge reward scenario. First, they took the risk and lost. Now, they absolutely must reap the rich reward the sought after at any cost.

There’s no turning back for them with XIV. XIV is a massive game and investment that must turn out.

  • Forget about that baby behemoth, I NEED that baby chocobo that chases Yoshida-san in the video where he demoes the gamepad controls.

    • C’mon. Why not join me on a quest in this world, Mag?

      • Craptop won’t play it. :I

        • MogCakes

Play the PS3 beta once it comes out!

          • Dun have PS3 either. :I

          • Then, get one! D:< That's what I will use, anyway.

          • Dun want one.

          • Justin Whiteaker

Um, then never play FFXIVARR then

  • MikeTxn
  • So hyped to play it. Also I would love to be able to play as a Viera. Frans, Frans everywhere lol =^_^=

    • Justin Whiteaker

Probably, and they’ll all have names like: xXxFranxXx, xSephirothsFranx, xSephirothsCloudforFranx, xxxxxxFranLegolasxxxxxx

      • True lol. I honestly couldn’t do that to one of my characters. Originality for the win, or just be the first one to score the original Fran name lol

  • Bloodios

I just trolled myself real hard by somehow perceiving the title as: “Square Talk Final Fantasy Versus XIII Expansion Plans, Baby SEPHIROTH

Only able to sleep for 4 hours after staying up for 2 days straight really is doing wonders to the mind. I seriously might have to start stocking up some sleeping pills…

  • notforsale

    Is this game still pay-to-play?

    • Yep.

    • Brion Valkerion

considering this and wow would be the only two real mmo’s pay to play when this does come out… and how long other p2p games have lasted in the past 5 years. I give it 6 months before it turns to micro transactions like all the rest.

The current game director seems to know that is a likely place to end up as well.

      • I hope it doesn’t go to F2P. I have yet to play a game that went F2P that stayed worth playing. And yes, I played GW2. Didn’t care for it. I think the hype killed it for me. I told people it wasn’t going to be the second coming of Jesus! I don’t see why people are so against paying as low as $15 a month. People spend more than that going out for the evening when this buys you an entire month of playtime

        • Marcio Campos

          You played Final fantasy xiv?!
          Your hype gone in seconds.

          • I said GW2 hype, nothing about 14 hype. If you meant FFXIV 1.0, yes I did play. It was atrocious at launch but fast forward to a year after launch and it was pretty fun. Yoshi P’s team did a good job making it turn into an actual game. I was actually sad when 1.0 stopped saving data in October. Most of the people who trash 14 now never played past launch so they have no idea how good it became.

          • Marcio Campos

Guild wars 2 was amazing! i played a lot and the fights were satisfating so much better than anything what you play in Final Fantasy XIV A Realm reborn. .

        • Draparde

Chances are it will stay P2P for quite some time. in one of the interviews the director gave reasoning to why alot of mmo’s have gone free to play, and why they wouldn’t have too.

      • So much ignorance. Educate yourself before you talk about things you don’t know about. Okay, kiddo?

        • M’iau M’iaut

Please take a moment to read our rules and in the future, we can do without the insults and name calling. Thanks.

          • TiredOfMyOldUsername

I really would like the know where is the insult in that ???
Sure he might have been rude, but there isn’t any insult in what he said…

          • Solomon_Kano

Calling someone ignorant is an insult. Also, I suppose being condescending is insulting. And calling somebody kiddo is certainly condescending.

          • TiredOfMyOldUsername

            For real ?
I have been called a lot of time ignorant and kiddo in my life and i didn’t like it, but i never though it was an insult…

          • Solomon_Kano

The word isn’t inherently an insult, it really just means you don’t know what you’re talking about, but it can be used in that fashion. Generally people just don’t like being called ignorant, so it’s seen as insulting.

          • M’iau M’iaut

The point can be made without reverting to such things — again thinking before posting. And there was a post deleted that went even further down that road.

      • MogCakes

6 months eh? Let’s come back in that time and see if you were right :D

  • Solomon_Kano

Yoshida’s got big plans. While I had some interest in playing 1.0, everything we’ve heard about him turning the game around has gotten me much more interested.

Wonder what the male race opposite the Viera will be?

  • Raharu95

I can see how Male Rabbits would look awkward . but come on, they still exist. did you not get the first time around that People don’t like Gender Restricted Races? plus… if you don’t take the time to make the Male Viera’s in an MMO , you never will any other time. I’m sure you can find a way to make Male Rabbit Humanoids not awkward.

    • Calintz YT

We seriously do hate gender restricted races. They are stupid and pointless.

      • Krystalmyth

They’re worse, they’re horribly sexist. Especially against men, which boggles my mind. Why would men do that to themselves?

  • Stop tempting me. You’re giving me so much mixed feelings. On the one hand, I hate MMO’s and the ‘casual’ chat that goes against my hardcore story driven RPG sensibilities.

But so much fan service here….

    • Final Fantasy XI is pretty much a regular Final Fantasy game with more story and people playing along side you. If you want a hardcore RPG story MMO then I suggest you try FFXI.

      • Not quite what I mean. I prefer the PS1 trilogy and FFX in terms of how battles play out, with a highly cinematic feel.

And I also enjoy JRPGs for character development and interaction. Every MMO I’ve ever seen has a few rewarding cutscenes at the end of quests, but the player characters themselves are little more than avatars and the chat boxes are just full of chat-speak. As someone who enjoys text-based roleplay, this feels like it defeats the point of an RPG.

        • Justin Whiteaker

Just give the game a chance with the free trial when it becomes available, then you’ll know for sure.

  • Unlimax

If the F2P model wasn’t on their plans in the near future and they still want to stick on the Subscription model just to regain the “Fans trust” .. then square is indeed shooting themselves in the foot with that policy .

The future will determine the fate of the game .

  • shuyai

“Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn producer-cum-director, Naoki Yoshida”

  • i’ve been waiting this game for years, for the ps3….
but, now that the ps4 was announced coming this holiday 2013, i thought it would be better to release this game also for the ps4 to match up the graphics of the pc…. XD

  • I could totally get into this if not for the monthly fee. Make the next one free to play and I’m in

  • Göran Isacson

Goshdarnit if they can include male catpeople and female giants what is standing in the way of male Viera? I will not understand this way of thinking, man.

Fortunately I do understand the thinking that FF games needs moar Gilgamesh, and more Battle on the Big Bridge. Because that is an always-good.

  • Awkward male rabbits? Come on! Fire Emblem Awakening, anyone? Yarne was the bomb. Someone should tell this guy to look at the taguel.
Gender-locked races are annoying unless there’s a good reason for it. There usually is not. “I think it would be awkward” is not a good reason for it. One of the things I’m most exited for is male catpeople. There’s nothing awkward about male bunnypeople.
They fixed the gender-locked stuff. I hope they don’t go and do it again. -_-

    • They should just break some of their own rules and have the race Vivi was in FFIX . Make it anything besides “Black Mage Only”. It’s a different universe, they can make it work.

Gender locked stuff sucks- just look at all the trouble it caused in Tera. :/ Those Elins..*cringes*

  • I’m glad they’re actually being serious and thinking of there future releases for once, I’m sick of the amount of Remakes In my opinion the last good final fantasy game to come out was FF10.

  • jordanbobordan

Just got my closed beta email yesterday, my body is ready…..

  • I just became even more excited than I was an hour ago!

  • Krystalmyth

No Male Viera? I mean this sounds like Tanaka-ism. They did the right thing and stopped gender locking the races, and here they go and talk about doing it again? Come on people.
