Bravely Default Twitter Hints At Localization

By Ishaan . March 2, 2013 . 4:30pm

Earlier in the week, the official Twitter feed for Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Square Enix’s latest original RPG in Japan, posted a tweet directed at Western fans that have keenly been awaiting news of the game’s localization.

“I accessed Twitter after a long absence. A voice of the foreign one arrives properly!” the tweet said.

Today, whoever is handling the Twitter feed—we assume it’s Bravely Default producer, Tomoya Asano—posted a follow-up tweet.

“There is very much comment from overseas one! I do my best to have all of you play!” the new tweet reads, with a note that translation software was used to make the post.

Square Enix haven’t officially announced Bravely Default for a North American or European release yet.

Put your money where your Engrish is, Square-Enix.

    • Letrico

Put your common sense where your brain is, Ryusui.

It is translated using a translation software and totally irrelevant whether they put more money to English or not.

      • Sylveria

Someone’s never heard the phrase “Put your money where your mouth is.” have they?

It’s a taunt or challenge to back up your words with action, usually attaching financial risk to a boast to show conviction. In this case, challenging Square Enix to do more than just announce the possibility of announcing an announcement, having nothing at all to do with the actual quality or financial commitment to the creation of the English translation of the twitter. The insertion of the phrase “Engrish” instead of “mouth” is just turning the phrase to be more relevant to the given material and take a little jab at the company.

      • ragingmerifes

But they do have to use money to hire people.

    • http://www.senran-international.boards.net/ TwinTails

Ok I’ll admit that is funny. ^_^

  • Ethan_Twain

Well this is sort of a surprise. There’s no way this is how Square Enix wanted this announcement to go down – poorly machine translated tweets. One wonders then if the man/woman running the bravely default twitter account isn’t acting against orders here. And then that leads to the followup question, why?

    • Locklear93

I’m not sure that that’s so. No matter how they announce Bravely Default, it’s not the sort of game that’s going to get a massive western following. I suspect Square-Enix is aware that it’s a niche market title, and aren’t quite as concerned with a fancy reveal as they might be for a new Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest.

      • Sylveria

I’d suspect that if it does get a international release, it will get the Final Fantasy title added to it so they can bank on a bit larger brand recognition, much like they did with “Final Fantasy Adventure” way back in the day.

        • Locklear93

I kind of doubt it. The days of that particular gimmick getting used are pretty well over. That said, I’ve no respect for Square-Enix, and wouldn’t put anything past them, either.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Asano’s the producer. He’s the one that gets to call the shots on his game. Marketing and PR in the west (ie; Square USA/EU) could get a little pissed, yeah, but like @Locklear93:disqus said, I don’t think it’s as big a deal as some of the more high-profile games. They’ll still get to blow it out with their own official PR and stuff whenever they’re ready.

  • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

Well, we’ll see. Still hoping “I’ll wrap the world in happy boobies” truly teased a localization announcement.

    • Spider-Man

Same here, need me some hometown.

  • Blur Will

    Gumbate!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

    I want to believe.

  • Shadowman

    I gotta believe.

  • KingGunblader

Okay, so all I’m taking this to mean is that he’ll talk to to the ups at Square Enix USA. I refuse to get excited yet.

    • Locklear93

That’s the safest way to take it. At best, maybe, “We all want to, and we’ll try.”

      • KingGunblader

AH but then again Harada tweeted that he would do his best to get Project X Zone localized and look what happened! We can only hope that this guy has the same kind of pull.

        • Locklear93

Yep, yep. Certainly not saying it won’t happen, and I think it will, in fact. I just agree with you that sans announcement, excitement is premature.

  • Prinnydoom

    Bring. It.

  • Rogerrmark

    My body is totally ready.

  • HerosLight

Bring it overseas so my wallet can be empty’d by the summer.

  • xzeldax3

The only reason SE has to be mad is that they won’t be able to make another countdown timer website.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

Why Bravely Default? Why not Type-0 instead? As in a game that actually looks good because Type-0 is darker while Bravely Default probably relies on cliches from the older games like gather four magic crystals, each representing the four elements.

    • Suicunesol

Because darker is unconditionally better, right? Talk about cliches. >_>

I’m sure they’re both good in their own ways. Ideally, we should have both. But it’s not like it has to be one or the other. It’s just that Type-0 is in a less favorable situation.

    • raitouniverse

For what it’s worth, people say Default is a little darker than what it looks like. And Bravely Default has been hype as hell since it came out in Japan. Majority opinion on it was that it was the best thing Japan Enix has made since TWEWY, so I’d say that buzz on the quality of Bravely Default has already reached certain levels that Type-0 has not. It’s also on a more viable handheld and it hasn’t been that long since it came out in Japan, so it would make so much more sense to bring over Bravely Default than Type-0. Just sayin.

      • benhofb

Now I want it more. I freakin loved TWEWY.

      • Neophoton

This good sir is correct on BDFF being darker than what it appears to be.

Though from what I’ve heard Square Enix isn’t even thinking about Type-0 anymore at this point.

    • Alphabet Soup

      Why not both? ;)

    • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

Type-0 will probably get a port, Final Fantasy is huge enough in the West for S-E to think about that route.

      http://media.tumblr.com/cf782cb9a88a53aafdf26c83aeededad/tumblr_inline_miwilkZsq61qfhhoq.jpg

Also BD is rated C probably for a good reason, let’s not knock it entirely.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Boring RPG clichés in Bravely Default? You don’t know the first thing about Type-0′s story, do you? I won’t spoil it for anyone, but yeah. It has “Square Enix 1st Production Department” written all over it, for better or worse. :P

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

        But Motomu Toriyama isn’t involved.

    • benhofb

Type-0 is probably not coming over due to Sony wanting to hide the PSP’s carcass in the closet. Bravely Default on the other hand is on a very strong, new-ish console that is dominating in Japan and doing moderately well in the States. Do the math, man. It is more logical to bring BD over money wise. And besides, if you are really frisky, you can wait for that Type-0 fan translation thing.

      • Elvick

Yes, that’s why tons of PSP games continue to release. Aksys doing them at retail on top of it…

Not sure why you felt the need to blame Sony, for SE taking too long with Type-0 localization to the point where it became unrealistic to release the damn game as it was.

Had they had their shit together, they could have released it, sold millions worldwide and gone out on the PSP with a bang before Vita was even announced. Instead they took forever to say anything, and when they did it was at a point where it didn’t much matter anymore for them.

        Yet consumers still want it.

        • benhofb

But realistically speaking, there are loads of PSP titles not being released. Yes, Aksys is still doing releases and so is NIS, but they are smaller companies than S-E. Not to mention a lot of the games being released, with the exception of some of Aksys’s games are digital. The PSP is am economically dead platform. The 3DS is thriving. It is not really Sony or S-E’s fault alone. Why publish a big game in a major franchise for a console riddled with piracy and that is already outdated here in the states? It would just be a waste of time for both companies. Yeah, I would love for it to come over, but I doubt it will. We just have to live with that.

          • Elvick

Yes, because we know how well digital releases sell.

Given how many continue to be localized, I’d say it’s perfectly viable to release a game on PSP these days. Even if just digital only. Not like Vita plays them or anything. Nope.

And none of them have had the brand power of Final Fucking Fantasy.

Keep deluding yourself. SE sat on the localization. SE doesn’t trust their own brand power (when evidence proves a new FF will sell millions on PSP).

SE could lazily release it digitally and do well. The shit port of FFIII had zero effort and still sold like mad on PSP. The PSP is so terrible that they released a game on PSP worldwide that no one asked for.

Anyone that wanted to pirate the game, can already.

          • benhofb

You want the game so badly? Go follow fan translation or contact S-E yourself. Seriously man. Arguing with some random guy on the comments here isn’t going to the damned thing localized digitally or physically. Do I look like I work for S-E? Go yell at them, not me.

    • Guest

Type-0 gets boring, fast imo. I can’t even finish the game. I’d much rather have this than Type-0 localized. They took too long.

    • LightZero

One is on a dead system in the west. The other is on a system that is still selling.

  • Nightmesh

I’m perked Square but only because this is more pr stuff then what you
did for Type-0 in the west. I refuse to get excited until I see an official
    announcement.

  • http://wwwdonicwebstartscom.webstarts.com/ donicx

Well here is hopping that they make an official announcement for the west.

  • Elemiel

If they announce it in the time frame from now to E3, everyone is getting ice cream.

It’s alright, they’ll put out non-dairy icecream too!

    • ronin4life

Wouldn’t it melt in the mail? O.o

      • Elemiel

        Astronaut ice cream won’t~!

        • http://radiantloki.blogspot.com/ Mark Dinh

Made my day… “astronaut ice cream” lmfao!

    • Asaoko

Okay, sureee!!! Belgian Chocolate for meeee~!!!

    • LegoPenguin

      pistachio please

  • brian

I wonder if I’d be disappointed if this was that big thing to expect at E3 (that is a big giant if, especially since it seems like he is going to do it and hasn’t yet) because I’d be happy we were getting it, but still nothing new about Vs13.

    • http://geekouts.blogspot.com/ miruki

Since they said they’ll announce a new Final Fantasy game at E3 while being at a Sony presentation, I doubt “that big thing” is gonna be the announcement of a title unrelated to FF for a competitors system…

  • SirRichard

Oh yeah, definitely calling this for an E3 reveal from Nintendo, or maybe even a Nintendo Direct? Who knows, maybe Square will announce it themselves. But I’d say it’s very likely to happen, Square haven’t much else on the agenda right now.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I don’t know if Nintendo would save 3DS announcements for E3, where they would be drowned by by all of the console news from the big three, among whatever else is shown. Separate announcements followed by a Nintendo Direct highlighting all of them is more likely, IMO. I think we’ll see one in April, just before Nintendo’s next round of financial reports.

      • SirRichard

Yeah, actually, that sounds about right. We technically haven’t gotten a 3DS-focused Direct yet like Japan got a while back, have we?

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Nope, we haven’t. So yeah, I would imagine they’ll want to highlight 3DS heavily later this year. Their operating profit goal for their next financial year is 100 billion yen, and the majority of that is going to come from the 3DS. Pokémon will obviously play a huge part in that, but we’ve seen the comments Iwata’s been throwing around about 3DS needing a wider variety of games in the U.S. and Europe.

          • http://geekouts.blogspot.com/ miruki

But that worldwide Valentine’s Direct was pretty focused on 3DS titles for around 90% of the time…?

I could imagine Squeenix going all out with their Final Fantasy announcement on the E3 and at the end they’ll add a “Oh, yeah, Bravely Default will be released in the West as well, but we’ll tell you more about that next time.”

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

That was first-party games. They’ll have to do a third-party presentation at some point as well. And Square aren’t going to mention FF and Bravely Default at the same time. No one would take note of the Bravely Default mention at all if it was made alongisde a major new console FF game. :P

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I thought the recent Nintendo Direct on Luigi is all about 3DS games?

  • Natat

Okay, even for Squeenix this would be too much of a tease. They got me pumped, let’s go!

  • solbalmung

I’m still a bit pessimistic thought, Square Enix bieng the ultimate troll there is nowadays.
With the PS4 conference and Yoichi Wada announcing an announcement for the E3…

    • Farid Belkacemi

There was no Yoichi Wada on the stage that night, just Shinji Hashimoto :p

      • solbalmung

My bad, was really tired when I wrote that comment xD

  • Tom_Phoenix

I guess we have no choice, but to keep our fingers crossed.

  • IshimaruKaito

didn’t they say something about it in game informer already??

    • Elemiel

Game Informer wrote an article about how they wanted to play it.

      • IshimaruKaito

ohhh i thought they already sorta announced it

    • James M Wallace

      Never trust GI.

  • Eric Harris

This is like Asano san saying “Please be excited for later”. You damn tease.

  • fireemblembeast

As I’ve said before, I believe that we will see this game in the west yet! ;)

  • Go2hell66

Just want to remind everyone that we are dealing with the ultimate trolls here, can’t believe a word they say

  • Riseabovethesky

    翻訳ソフトでは優れていたならば、我々は物乞いする必要はありません。また、私は私の隣人の猫を食べた。

    • Locklear93

      …that poor cat.

    • Neophoton

I was okay with this comment up until the second sentence. :(

      • Riseabovethesky

Perhaps it has a special meaning difficult to translate? Perhaps it means we will have a new Chrono game?

        • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

          Why?

        • Neophoton

It definitely mentions eating… “食” is for “to eat”… D:

    • Warboss Aohd

      wot iz dis humie sayin’?

  • Neophoton

Hold onto yer butts? I’m pretty confident the game will get brought over now that they’re speaking up about it.

  • alixraen

If it makes SE money, then go nuts.

  • Elvick

And Baba wants us to play Tales of Hearts, and that’s gotten us nowhere so far.

    xP

Anyhoo, I hope something happens but I won’t get my hopes up. SE has trolled me too much, that “presentation” at the PS4 event almost killed me in disappointment.

lulz, negative thumb for no reason.

    • Eric Harris

      there, feel better?

      • Elvick

I don’t care either way. Just found it funny that I had a negative thumb, for no apparent reason.

  • Sentsuizan_93

Do it Square. If you do, I will buy this. Day one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/stale.laastad Ståle Laastad

Makes no sense not to bring this over, it sold well in JPN and will sell well elsewhere, its not a niche title imo.

    • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

JRPG on 3DS with a unique art style, turn based combat and random battles sounds pretty niche . Its got S-E backing it though so its got a better shot than most.

      • raymk

And yet FF the rythme was brought over and its not even an rpg >_>.

        • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

Its got the final fantasy name attatched to it plus its a rhythm game so the budget wasn’t massive. There isn’t a huge script to translate or voice acting to record.

  • Ceci “Ruzuzu” Kiyomizu

I hope it really does come over here the 3DS doesn’t have very many JRPG games and i’ve heard from friends that this is a fantastic title.

  • Lilith

All the producers want us to play their game. The publishers not so much. This is Senran Kagura all over again.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

    All my want!

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well at least SE on Japan actually had some kind of plan to bring the game here but……. i wonder if they can get past by that SE USA wall.T_T

    • raymk

Sometimes you people make me question you sometimes. It wasn’t even SE USA that didn’t want to bring the game over, it wasn’t SE japan either. I swear people don’t know how marketing works at all.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Firstly i will said here that i am sure that we are going to get this game here but it won’t be easy for them to pass by that SE US screnning process considering that till now, we even haven’t get any DQM: Terry Wonderland and that DQ Slime adventure game at all.

This is not about marketing problem though. This had always been problem for SE Japan and SE US.

If you remember, Nanashi no Game which is planned to released on US get denied by US group, saying that they already research for the market in US and the game won’t sell at all.

  • Tsurugi

I would like if level-5 will do the same, they could localize Inazuma Eleven GO Shine/Dark and GO 2 Neppuu/Raimei for 3DS ! In my opinion it is an amazing game right guys? Anyone here likes Inazuma Eleven GO( the game for 3DS) ?

  • lordroto

People here still believed it wasn’t coming overseas :O

    • raymk

Seriously! Of all the games that they would think wouldn’t come over why would they think this one wasn’t? Now that I think about it all those people were using the type-0 reasoning so maybe that’s it.

  • Ty Austin

The people over on the Gamefaqs forums are already celebrating, lol.

Apparently, they’ve got an SE insider who posts over there, he/she said that the decision was made to localize BD at their last meeting. I was pretty skeptical about this person’s credibility, but the people over there say he/she’s pretty reliable since he/she was able to call what All the Bravest was months before it even came out.

Here’s a link to some of it on NeoGAF:

These incredibly earnest machine translations are kind of adorable.

  • raymk

Damn you people the game is going to come over good lord! This is FE awakening all over again and its getting tiring just seeing all this crap for the second time. This situation is nothing like pass ones so don’t even bring up any if it has to do with psp or ds.

  • CirnoLakes

Doing their best to have us play.

    Welp, my 3DS is ready.

  • chroma816

It’d be so awesome for this to come over. That said, I’d like for it to have that black cover with the fairy. Unfortunately Squeenix might think it’s a bit risque for Western fans. Fuck.

  • foopy

The Overseas One is pleased. Let your very much comment fill the skies!

  • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

I wouldn’t get my hopes too high. SE = masters of the trolling art. This likely means nothing.
