How Assassins And Templars Fit Into Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

By Ishaan . March 4, 2013 . 3:00pm

Ubisoft have shared more information on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. As previously reported, the game will take place in the 18th century, and will put you in the boots of Edward Kenway, an ex-Royal Navy man-turned-pirate. Here’s a couple more details about the game from a press release Ubisoft put out today:

Discover the largest and most diverse Assassin’s Creed world ever created. From Kingston to Nassau, explore 50 unique locations where you can live the life of a pirate including:

− Loot underwater shipwrecks
− Assassinate Templars in blossoming cities
− Hunt for rare animals in untamed jungles
− Search for treasure in lost ruins
− Escape to hidden coves

Command your ship, the Jackdaw, and strike fear in all who see her. Plunder and pillage to upgrade the Jackdaw with ammunition and equipment needed to fight off enemy ships. The ship`s improvements are critical to Edward’s progression through the game. Attack and seamlessly board massive galleons, recruit sailors to join your crew and embark on an epic and infamous adventure.

Ubisoft also explain the roles that Templars and Assassins play in the game. In Assassin’s Creed IV, Templars are searching for a mysterious place that, according to rumours, could give them an an advantage against the Assassins, and help them achieve world domination. However, the Assassins have plans of their own, and Edward somehow factors into them.

Ubisoft have Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag planned for release on the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, PlayStation 4 and “other next generation consoles”. The Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U versions will be available on October 29th in North America and November 1st in Europe.

ah, that makes more sense on how pirates and templars mix =P
The new assassin’s cloak design doesn’t really look too “assassins creed”-ish though, without the beaked hood edward looks more like the ancestor of alex mercer from prototype, but that’s just me

and off topic here, the new interface is rather bad =/, the new background “over-shines” pretty much everything in the article

  • Helepythia

If the “advantage” isn’t the fountain of youth, then I don’t know any other pirate inspired treasure.

    • Dexward

El Dorado maybe. It’s a mysterious place after all.

      • Warboss Aohd

an’ all dat gold would be quite da benefit ta either side.

        • Dexward

It’s also a befitting place to hide a Piece of Eden.

          • Ferrick

atlantis would be a good place too, since they added a dive mechanic now, and that’s probably a good place for a PoE to be hidden in too

          • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Atlantis would probably work better if there was a Greek assassin, considering it is an ancient Grecian legend.

          • Ferrick

maybe edward is half greek? well its ubi, so they’re bound to do something like that

  • s07195

So the assassins have finally taken the leap from just being able to swim to diving underwater? Wonder how that’ll work.

  • BringTheFate

Another year, another Assassin’s Creed, huh?

Nice as the naval battles were in AC3, I’m so sick of them. It’s just not Assassin’s Creed with a Desmond look-alike. I agree with what someone said on one of the previous AC4 articles: it’d be better if they stuck with major historical events. The French Revolution could be done extraordinally well with the existing templates and plot ideas, the Civil War, the Great Depression, and then maybe one of the World Wars — or cover both and the Depression in one game. The Cold War and Watergate would be perfect to tie in to the assassins and templars, especially since Nixon was the impetus behind a lot of big corporate ideas that started slowly taking over everything, much like Abstergo.

And it does worry me that they’re so ambitious with the open world roaming. They’ve been getting larger and larger as the games have gone on, but it still doesn’t seem quite big enough for all that. Here’s hoping they don’t backpedal and change their tune once they get working on it, since they’re still going to keep to the release-one-every-year schedule. Not to say the trailers don’t look outstanding. Ubisoft really knows how to market. I just don’t expect to get this, or at least not until it’s cheap, because I just want them to get to modern time already. The dragging things out is really getting to me.

Not to be rude but i disagree with you opinion and i don’t
even respect it to be honest. Most of your “major historical events”
involve one of the youngest countries with the weakest history. Most major
historical events happen outside of the United States. Assassins Creed 3 uses
the only viable use of American history in the assassin creed series. Though I do like your French Revolution Idea.

If i had my way the whole Desmond/ Abstergo modern time
bullshit would be taken out of the game. Just history and fiction colliding.
People who want modern time Assassins Creed games, seem kind of ignorant, seems
how the series was made famous for its artwork, recreating architecture and
culture from the past, and incorporating it in to a story about conspiracies
and corruption. The gameplay is not that good. It can be very repetitive and
      boring, but I Enjoy it.

More interesting but relatively vague historical events
      would be:

-Sengoku or Edo period Japan. Could incorporate Sarutobi Sasuke
(and the Sanada Ten Braves) a ninja who may or may not have existed. Ninjas are
the best assassins in History. The art would be so cool. I would love to see what
the assassins cloak would look like. (Connors was pretty cool). Ieyasu,
Nobunaga, and Hideyoshi could be a Templars.

      – Fall of the Roman Empire and founding of Rome I would like
to see Romulus and Remus. (The She Wolf can be the code name of a female
assassin that raises them. Maybe make her the protagonist.) And stuff from
Troy.( she could help evacuate it).

-Or the fall of Caesar. He was assassinated by his own

-Renaissance Britain, a lot of things happened during this
time. Could see lots of Shakespeare tie-ins, possibly some robin hood.

You don’t know the historical event involved in Assassins
Creed 4, you just know that there are pirates. Don’t shoot it down just yet.
Besides it can’t be more mediocre than a modern AC so you should be fine.

      • Symbol de Au

NO JAPAN! **** I was reading through that but you suggest Japan and sorry but no. NO!!!!!!

        • amagidyne

          What a great argument.

      • amagidyne

Man, Sengoku and Edo period Japan are overused. I’d like to see the Yayoi period and the Yamatai chiefdom depicted. Himiko would totally be an assassin.

        • BL4CKSH33P

I know they are terribly overused but it is only because they are the periods that defined the country’s future. The Tokugawa clan ruled japan until the late 1800’s. Also I chose this period because it is filled with corruption and several conspiracy theories could be formed about the period, and there is so much betrayal. Plus it seems perfect for a Templar vs Assassin setting, only this time the Templars come out on top. Also a lot of great Japanese literature is from this time.

  • Tyler Casilio

Is this a PS2 game or a PS3/PS4 game? The graphics aren’t really looking like they did in ACIII

    • BL4CKSH33P

That picture does look like crud. I hope that is not a screenshot from the wiiu.

  • BL4CKSH33P

Looks Like a pretty good game. maybe better than AC3. I don’t Like the Cloak its not very artistic it doesn’t reflect the culture enough to look less Assassins Creed like. But the rest looks amazing.

  • Sergio Briceño

Come on! You can’t just say that and not include Jack Sparrow! Come on Ubi you can do it.

  • Godman

This game just continues to hype me up!

Hopefully I get to wear a awesome naval outfit like the one in ACIII anytime (The one that was only usable during Naval missions)

  • J_Joestar

Those are all great features and all… but can one invoke the right of Parlay? in accordance to the Code set down by Morgan and Bartholomew.

  • Gary Jayz

Just shut up with the teasers and release it QUICK!
