Tomb Raider Being Played By 1 Million Folks In Under 48 Hours

By Ishaan . March 8, 2013 . 8:00am

Tomb Raider sales appear to be going well so far. Karl Stewart, global brand director at Crystal Dynamics, tweeted this morning: “Wow, 1m gamers playing in less than 48hrs!”

It isn’t clear if Stewart the 1 million figure from store sales or simply the number of gamers online that are playing the game, but he did add: “Hearing some stores are running low..more copies are on the way!”

Tomb Raider was released on March 5th for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game is a reboot of the Tomb Raider series, featuring a new origin story for Lara Croft. You can catch up with our interview with the director here.

This game is awesome. Everything is so beautiful

  • Rihawf

    Tomb raider being successful?
Oh my god,all that I wished for!

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

Other than the current issues with the PC version I’m glad to see Tomb Raider started well.
I personally haven’t picked it up yet but I can’t wait to eventually try it out :D

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

What are the issues with the PC version? Running it at Ultra settings with no problems at the moment.

      • Armane

QTE prompts I believe are the main problem. Seems like people aren’t being told what button to press and if they are it’s at the bottom of the screen rather than on the prompt itself. The issue is supposed to resolve itself if you use a 360 controller, still unacceptable though.

        • FitzpatrickPhillips

Ah okay. Yeah I’m using my PS3 controller so no issues with that.

        • TrevHead

I bought my dad the PC version yesterday and he stopped playing it due to the QTEs.

Hopefully it’ll be fixed as he won’t use a pad.

        • NimbusStev

My only problems I’ve had with the QTE was that I was playing with a PS3 controller and the prompts are 360 buttons. Call me gaming illiterate but I must have died 4 times in a row for pressing Square instead of Triangle when it told me to press Y. x_x …My Nintendo fanboy roots run deep…

          • raymk

Damn that’s messed up, I never knew that it could work like that either.

  • Go2hell66

Now SE will have enough money to fuel their VS XIII development :D

    • Steven Lamphere

VS XIII development? My sir, you are very optimisitic!

    • igotareallybigthingwithcars

If I am not mistaken, these games are from different development teams

      • Go2hell66

They are but what does that have to do with how SE spends its money?

      • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Square has already paid the dev Team, the publisher is collecting most of the funds now.

        • Elvick

The development team is Square Enix. Since they own Crystal Dynamics… and Eidos Montreal (multiplayer dev).

  • DesmaX

Well, this really looked like it was going to be a success.

Not my type of game, but I’m happy for them

  • ZEROthefirst

I’ve never cared for Tomb Raider personally, but it’s always good to hear a game is doing so well.

  • riceisnice

When will we ever see another protagonist like Heather Mason. Someone who can capture the hearts of men while wearing a bra.

    • Valtiel Ikari

this is so win! you deserv a price!

    • puchinri

But she’s an action girl! It’s so hard to run around and do things when your breasts are restricted!

You can never hope for too much in gaming, just always be pleasantly surprised and content when things do get better.

    • Wtv
      • Symbol de Au

After googling I found that this character doesn’t wear a bra but Lara does. Through this information I was able to deduce that riceisnice was being sarcastic…I was also able to deduce that riceisnice makes terrible jokes…

      • OMG lol.

    • Aoshi00

Just rented Silent Hill Revelation last night, pretty horrible compared to the first movie (though the special effect was pretty good), was excited at first when I saw the trailer of a SH3 movie..

Was never a fan of Tomb Raider before, but I like this reboot. Just started the game and it’s really fun. New Lara/Camilla Luddington is hawt :)

  • NimbusStev

I broke down and bought it on Steam yesterday. It’s really good so far. Definitely a breath of fresh life for the series.

  • At least SE will have some backup franchises as they slowly kill off FF for good… Game is awesome though.

    • igotareallybigthingwithcars

Why would they kill FF? I know they haven’t been able to impress a lot of “die-hard” FF fans lately with their “releases that are not like FF7/ or are not turn based” but I don’t think they would go that far. It’s their cash cow.

In other news, they’ll probably reveal another FF main series installment this E3, as mentioned by the SE guy from the Playstation 4 announcement meeting.

      • You both missed the point… They aren’t “trying” to kill it. They are unintentionally killing it and very slowly at that. I thought it was an obvious enough statement since SE obviously isn’t getting rid of the franchise on their own…

    • Wtv

Why would SE kill something that sells?

  • scratchbach

I’m having a really, really great time with this. It was totally an impulse buy, but I have no regrets.

  • Nivans

I have never played a TR game before seriously (i did play a bit of the first and others but never got into them), but this one is good.

pretty good? no. There’s so many things wrong that I’m surprised are being overlooked and getting a free pass when RE6 was chastised for the same things, the QTEs in this game are plenty and are terrible. In some parts it feels like the game forces you to die in order for you to see the death scenes, there’s so much stuff that makes you go “Seriously?” like in RE6’s “action movie” type of scenes in this game. And the whole making you feel the pain/growth etc of Lara as they said in interviews is total BS. Things are done in order to show gore and “badassery” not for you to feel for the character’s misfortunes.

    • puchinri

I feel like she suffers too much in the game (just from what I’ve seen even, not played personally). I mean, for her first venture, she catches on too quick and survives too much (without displaying much trouble). I thought that was a complaint in a title or two, but it seems okay here?

      • Tien Ron

lol well the point is she is the main character she cant just die, and her suffering too much is realistic, because she puts herself in danger, i disagree but i like that fact that she is all damage and bruised up and she survives it makes good history.

        • puchinri

It’s just that it gets too be too much. Even in the beginning, she pulls what should be a rusty piece of metal/steel out of her stomach/ribs and just (barely) limps on.

          It’d be more realistic to me if this was her second or third venture out to be able withstand all this better, but for the first time having to fend for herself, etc? I can’t buy it. ^u^;

      • Elvick

        It’s a video game.

        • puchinri

Indeed it is. Just like the titles before it (which I referenced/mentioned).

    • Wtv

Actually, the QTE kinda disappear after the beginning. They still come back every now and then…but not that much. It’s kinda weird that the cutscenes loses the QTE that they had before. I don’t know why they did that, but well…

I don’t really agree about forcing you to die..except in the river part. It was kinda painful…but okay, I’ll get over it.

Great game, though. Still didn’t beat it, but..

    • Symbol de Au

I’ve only seen the trailers but I had to keep myself from laughing when she fell off the third cliff or ridge in a row…Couldn’t take the “emotional” thing seriously either…In any case Resident Evil 6 was over chastised for sure but that was to be expected…

Edit: Well watched some video reviews…I was right about the falling…

  • Masa

Never liked TR but played a little at a friends house this afternoon……….just got home and bought the game online. :)

  • Aqua King

The game itself is really good. I am very happy at how it turned out and look forward to more in the future! The DLC ‘pre-order’ promotion, on the other hand, has been a joke. Gamestop was advertising five powerup DLC codes with the code you get on the receipt. The code ended up being a sign up code for a trivia game that was already over by the release date of the game. I’m pretty much under the assumption that there is no way to get these bonus items anymore since you can no longer participate in this ‘pre-order’ trivia sponsorship page. Highly frustrating.

  • Seven of The Scions

Bought it yesterday and…..shit i can’t stop playing it. I’m so enjoying the game. No wonder it sells so much.

  • Prithivi

I’m really happy to see that classic and iconic videogame franchises can nowadays still be important saleswise. I hope that Resident Evil and Final Fantasy can someday return to their former glory too!
