Ron Gilbert Leaves Double Fine Productions

By Ishaan . March 11, 2013 . 9:00pm

Ron Gilbert, creator of the Monkey Island series of adventure games, and more recently, The Cave, has left Double Fine Productions, which he joined back in 2010, he reveals on his blog.

Despite his departure, Gilbert intends to continue making games. “So many games left to be designed,” he writes in the same blog post.

He continues: “I want to thank all the amazing people at Double Fine for all their hard work on The Cave. It was a true pleasure to work with every one of them over the past two years.  So much fun.  I will miss them all.  And of course to Tim for creating the opportunity to come there and make The Cave.”

Gilbert goes on to mention that’s he currently at work on an iOS side project that he’ll be focusing on over the next few months. “It’s called Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG,” he shares.

Gilbert will also be holding a keynote at PAX Australia.

it wouldnt kill him to stick to one company and you would think Double Fine Productions would work the best for him since he and Tim worked on past games together.

    • I find it odd that he’s leaving, too. I can’t possibly imagine why. Maybe Double Fine have been taking on projects he isn’t interested in. Maybe he just wants to work on stuff that he thinks would be too obscure even for them.

I was under the impression this was his plan all along. He just joined to work on The Cave. It was never meant to be a permanent thing.

At least, I seem to recall hearing something like that when it first happened.

Just what the world needed: more Bejeweled clones.

  • I wonder if his work on the Kickstarter game is over. His name was used to pitch the kickstarter plan so one would assume he would be working on it.

What the hell? Gilbert joining DF was one of my dreams come true!

I really want to know why he decided to leave. Also, I hope this does not affect the Kickstarter adventure game in any way.

    • He was never involved with the Kickstarter, except as a name mention.

I suspect his leaving is more to do with the fact that a lot of the company resources are currently going towards Reds/DFA and there was currently no room for a second large project that he would be interested in.
