Capcom vs. SNK 2 Might Be A PS2 Classic As Soon As April

By Ishaan . March 20, 2013 . 9:30am

Last year, Capcom USA said they were working on getting Capcom vs. SNK 2 onto the PlayStation Network as a PS2 Classic. That might be happening sooner than you would imagine.

Over on the Capcom forums, a user asked for an update on the status of Capcom vs. SNK 2 on the North American PlayStation Store. Capcom USA’s Senior Vice-President Christian Svensson replied: “Current schedule for the release of the PS2 game is the end of April… mind you, if Sony chooses, that could move (it is later than I had originally anticipated already).”

So, provided there aren’t any hiccups along the way, it shouldn’t be long now.

well, that knocks out the chances for online play.

    • Shindoi Hayato

Well, it is Capcom. They could release this version, get your money, then release an Iron Galaxy “HD” (filters, bah!) port, and get your money again. And let’s face it, we always say “I’m not gonna re-buy that game!” … but we do.
      (For CvS2, I would…)

I’m also surprised there hasn’t been more of a call for the Alpha/Zero games to be released.

      • Armane

I think the call for Alpha died down after Capcom commented that due to the Alpha Collection and Double Upper they wouldn’t consider it for a while. I think call for it will rise again, especially if CvS gets a port.

Personally though I’d see myself being pretty disappointed by an Alpha HD port (as it’s my favourite SF series). I basically want 2 Online Edition alongside a definitive version of 3 (the extra characters, Hyper Alpha, World Tour, even Pocket Alpha 3 emulated).

        • Shindoi Hayato

I hear ya. I was a huge Alpha fan back in the day. I was so into it that I hated the initial release of SFIII until 2nd Impact came out with its vastly improved system.

I know Ono at one time mentioned he’d love to do another Alpha game, which I’d love to see. I just hope it would go back to the Alpha 2 play-style, as Alpha 3 was really… I won’t go so far as to say Broken, but the -ism system was unbalanced, and I wasn’t a big fan of the safe-fall system.

          • Armane

Absolutely. Alpha 3 is just for fun, hence why I want to see all the fun additions the game has seen since it’s initial release, in one backage, while keeping Alpha 2 comparatively spartan (could even be a separate release, maybe include 1 like MvC Origins).

After SFIV, which was basically Street Fighter Beta or II and a half, I don’t really see them going back to Alpha, but I’d like to see something that plays similarly.

    • Brion Valkerion

It already had it on XBOX lol.

  • pimpalicious

I thought this would be getting the HD treatment. Would be surprised that Darkstalkers and Jojo get it but not this(not to say those two are bad, I just thought CvsSNK was more popular).

    • Brion Valkerion

They already said they could not due to SNK not wanting to renew the contract for another game. The online versions have to be considered a new game, since they technically are. And SNK as we all know could not make a decent decision about anything to save their life.

A PS2 Classics release was pretty much the only option.

      • Model_M

You need to look at it from a business standpoint, when the original CVS2 was released, SNK got ZERO profits from it because it was Capcom’s game, the same situation will likely result if they did an HD re-release. So don’t downplay SNK’s business practices because they’re not making decisions out of their kindness.

  • HerosLight

This was one of my favorite fighting games for PS2 and the coolest crossover next to MvC.

I really hope they add online play for this. It would be stupid to leave it out since MvC2 got that.

  • Go2hell66

come on capcom, you’ve been so good with making these online edition remakes and the one game that actually needs it gets released as a ps2 classic…

    • Since the game is already made for PS2 they just need to release the game as it is, but if they attempt to modify and add features they need to ask for SNK’s permission, and after the SNK VS Capcom Chaos fiasco SNK is not in the best of terms with Capcom.

      • gomas

SVC, a fiasco?, yeah probably for fanboys. SVC is a solid fighter almost in every aspect, not to mention it has one of the best sprite designs ever created.

        • katamari damacy

          I still like anorexic Sagat

          • gomas

In fact, that`s my favorite re-design!

  • I would have rather this get the HD + online treatment instead of the PS2 classic treatment.

  • Shane Guidaboni

This is pointless without integration of online play.

  • Model_M

This’ll be good for those who never got a chance to play this back in the day, Ive seen the PS2 disc go for ridiculous prices online..

  • ThomasTruong

Now a new generation of fighting game enthusiasts can enjoy
“This is True Love We’re Making.”

    All the time.

  • Solomon_Kano

I’m so ready for this. The best fighter on PS2 by a country mile, and probably my favorite ever. An “HD” version would’ve been nice, but hell, I lost countless hours in the original without online so this is good enough.

  • If nobody knows this, the ps2 version does have online play but it’s only available on the Japanese version (available now on jp psn). Unfortunately, it’s likely that they won’t release that version. A ps2 import would be so much better.

  • This game is cursed to me, I wanted to rent it before and the disc was corrupt. I found a used copy cheap once and it was corrupt. Never found a new copy of the game in my town.

  • Just Tim

I sincerely hope SRK won’t beat Capcom USA on any further Capcom VS SNK 2-related announcements, especially of the whole Capcom VS SNK 3 April Fools’ joke some time ago.

  • Raoni Marques

Hoping for online play, even though it’s unlikely. A wanna kick some ass with Rock Howard!

  • KnifeAndFork

It’d be nicer as an HD port with online…

  • Göran Isacson

Can’t say I’m too interested since i already own the darn thing, but nice for those who don’t!… Even if I see a lot of grumbling about HD-remakes, which would PROBABLY have to happen with SNK’s okay first and that might be a lot more hassle than Capcom is willing to go through for a single game, so no dice there. As for those wishing for online mode… I’m curious, has any PS2 classic game ever gotten something like that, or is that all HD remasters?

  • BushidoBlade

I’m still waiting for a NEW SNK VS. Capcom..ah if only.
