Dragon’s Crown Reaches U.S. This Summer

By Ishaan . March 25, 2013 . 8:00am

Dragon’s Crown’s U.S. release won’t be too far behind its Japanese one. Atlus USA announced this morning that they have the side-scrolling beat-em-up scheduled for release this Summer on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

The following character classes will be available for selection:

  • The Fighter, who uses his armor and quick-hitting attacks to tank and destroy enemies
  • The Dwarf, who specializes in getting up close and personal with grapple attacks
  • The Amazon, who moves quickly and wields a giant axe to unleash massive damage
  • The Wizard, who blasts fire at single targets or in pillars to incinerate foes
  • The Elf, who uses her bow and agility to launch devastating volleys and escape danger
  • The Sorceress, who uses ice magic and summoned skeletons to control the battlefield

On the PlayStation 3, Dragon’s Crown will cost $50. The Vita version will cost $40. You’ll be able to play the game with up to three other players, but Atlus say that cross-platform play is not supported.

Atlus haven’t announced a specific release date for Dragon’s Crown yet.

So I take it the game won’t be cross-buy, then…Oh well, still looking forward to this.

  • Nas

If only Atlus had a European branch…. O well, Come on NISA.

    • Armane

At least we can import it.

      • PSN for me. Too many games to import and customs have been killing my wallet each time. Pretty much doubles (sometimes more?) the price of the game when you include shipping fees. Oh Britain ;~;

        • Armane

I don’t find customs too painful, and obviously shipping comes with the territory; what gets me is the £8 or whatever to Royal Mail.

    • AdachiTohru

      European publishers are so useless…

  • Spirate

No cross-platform game is a bit of a bummer.

  • d19xx

Too bad about no cross-play. Just the Vita version for me then….

    • xavier axol

i was really excited for this feature, it’s a real bummer to not included that in there. after seeing how well it worked on dead or alive 5, it’s disappointing to say the least. i was planning on getting both versions, but now i considering to just get the vita version. plus it would be too expensive to get both anyway…. a discount would be sweet!, but i dont’ expect it would happen. it’s sad :`(

  • Zarx

Still excited about this game, though I do hope they can patch in cross-play if ever that becomes possible.

    • benhofb

Well, I don’t see why not. They could just integrate the servers for the Vita and PS3 versions or something? It is probably possible, but just for the sake of saving money, they aren’t doing it right away.

  • sandra10

Nice. I already have the Vita version pre-ordered for $30 (after Atlus cancelled my first $30 pre-order) so I’m in for a gorgeous brawl.

  • Out of curiosity, why is the Vita version cheaper? They’re being released in the same format, with the same content, right?

    • Pyrotek85

They probably consider $39.99 the upper limit for Vita titles in NA.

      • JonathanisPrimus

There have been three $50 Vita games in North America; Uncharted Golden Abyss, DJ Max Technika Tune, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified (lol).

    • sandra10

Because consumers expect handheld games to be cheaper. Even when Sly 4’s PS3 version was knocked down to $40, SCE knocked the Vita version to $30.

  • Whelp looks like the PS3 version I shall get.

  • HassanJamal

    Soooooo no cross buy?

  • Amro Hamad

    is it interesting to buy

  • Margatroids

I’ve been looking forward to this. And thanks to the no region lock I’ll soon be able to experience the Elf’s delicious thig- err this fantastic game myself.

  • Does it have online multiplayer?

    • z_merquise

  • Vanillaware: Keeping 2D alive one game at a time, and enjoying every one of them.

  • ElGatoSerio

men, i dont know which version to buy :/

    • xavier axol

get the vita version, that 5″ OLED screen really makes 2D game like dragon’s crown come alive. and it’s cheaper than the ps3 version, even though it has the same amount of content. i can also play multiplayer with you if you want?, since i’ll be playing the vita version.

    • gustave154

Yeah buy the vita version?? Unless u don’t have a vita? xD

  • JonathanisPrimus

$90 for both, and no Cross-Play support? How about no.

  • Cameron Ward

im getting the PS3 version and this game will rock

  • Draparde

Probably getting the vita version~ though i guess it depends on what/how many friends of mine are getting it on what system, since there’s no cross play X_x

  • z_merquise

I’ll go with the PS3 version. My brother seems to be looking forward to play this too so it’s good that I’ll have someone to join me for some offline co-op. Just like the days of old.

  • Taylor Greene

PS3 version for me. I like the option of local multiplayer.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Preordered the PS3 version when it was $40 :D
Looking great, can’t wait for this and Muramasa Rebirth

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Both versions already pre-ordered the very day they went up. The only thing disappointing about this announcement was the lack of cross platform play. Wasn’t that one of the features they announced during its premier? I’m definitely saddened by this news, but it’s not a complete deal breaker. Come’on Summer!

  • redhood56

I do not own a PS3, but I do have a vita! This game looks awesome, so i tam totally getting the vita version!

  • benhofb

TWO Vanillaware games in ONE summer?! I don’t think my mind and eyes will be able to handle it!

    Sucks about cross-plat, though…

    • What’s the other one?

      • benhofb

Muramasa: Rebirth for the Vita as well. Its Vanillaware, but being published by Aksys.

        • Oh yea…well I’ve already played it.

  • $29082171

    At long bloody last.

  • gustave154

    This game will be glorious

  • Learii

    3 only? not 4 co-op?

    • Three OTHER players. Including yourself it’s four players.

    • Tincho Kudos

“You’ll be able to play the game with up to three other players” meaning it will be you plus three other players, so a total of four players :)

      • AdachiTohru

        A smart one

  • AaqibRawat

golden axe and streets of rage meet your new friend dragons crown.
[ puts on shelf next to them]

    sorry blaze.

    ……drool amazon

  • I’ve never read this many people claim they’re going to get a Vita version over a PS3 version of a game. I don’t get it unless you only own a Vita but I can’t imagine how many people bought a Vita and did not own a PS3. Anyways, I’ll be getting this on PS3. It’s gonna look amazing on my TV and hopefully be fun as hell too.

    • Zarx

I’m actually getting it on PS3 for the sole purpose of being able to use an arcade stick lol.

      • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Does it support arcade sticks (or is this a dumb question)? I’m actually interested if it does…

        • Zarx

It should, I don’t think they’ll use the right analog stick(much if they actually use it) on a 2D beat em up.

        • Kelohmello

It better! Considering it’s the spiritual successor to the old DnD arcade games. That being said, most arcade sticks work with most games because it just uses the same inputs as the controllers.

      • I never actually thought of that. That’s pretty neat but I don’t have an arcade stick. It’s why I haven’t bought any fighters this generation. =/

    • AdachiTohru

If you have both, its better to get a vita version, so much beautiful, more than the PS3 version, thanks to the OLED screen, and has exclusive features and a better price :)

      • What exclusive features does the Vita version have because I haven’t read about any? And I’d argue this beautiful 2D art will look better on an HDTV.

        • AdachiTohru

These beautiful 2D art will certainly look bigger on a bigger TV but there is no need of HDTV because there is no HD texture or things you can only see in HD. Even the dev said for this kind of game like Muramasa, OLED is the best choice ( thats why they ported Muramasa on VIta and not on PS3/360 )

For the features, there are touch features, more intuitive, on Vita you directly touch the object you want on the screen, when you need to move the cursor with the stick, and there is some secrets path you can open by tapping them on the screen ( dont know if they are on PS3 too, this was not said )
If you played Trine 2 on Wii U, you know the touch features are more intuitive than moving the cursor on the screen with the stick.

          • Zeik56

I’ll take couch co-op over touchscreen. Getting two people together that own both a Vita and Dragon Crown would be next to impossible.

  • The no cross play is kind of a let down, but that’s ok I guess, the game still looks good. I think I’ll be getting the PS3 version so I can enjoy it on my big screen at home.

  • SirRichard

Can’t wait to play it in May 2014.

    • AnimusVox

      You’re from Europe aren’t you? :L

      • AdachiTohru

We’re all from Europe sadly :(

        Nobody love Europe :(

        • AnimusVox

I love Europe if that helps. Which it probably doesnt since I’m not part of a localizing video game company. But it’s the thought that counts.

      • SirRichard

        What gave it away?

        • AnimusVox

I sensed some hostility in the comment. Not that I blame you. Hopefully ‘Ghostlight’ will pick this one up.

          • SirRichard

It’s a lot more than “some”, believe you me, and if anyone’s going to pick it up it’s going to be Rising Star. And no harm to them, but if it’s Ghostlight who do somehow swing it, then make that May 2015.

    >No cross play
    >likely no cross buy

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA thanks for saving me the $40 Vanillaware.

    • Go2hell66

are you serious the vita version has no online play? thats kind of a deal breaker for me…

according to these guys the vita version has online play?

      • brian

I don’t see any reason for no cross play to make it offline only.

      • AdachiTohru

Dont listen this child, the game has online play on Vita

  • hunterrnl

Yes yes yes !I love these kinds of games !

*sees* Atlus usa , turns around and walks away.

    ( From Europe )

    • AdachiTohru

We want this game in Europe on Vita please ( and a physical version )

  • I want to make love with this game.. so bad

  • fds_nextdart

No crossplay between the two versions is such a wasted opportunity. I’m still getting it, but it’d have been times better if you could play with people regardless of the platform~.

  • z_merquise

Found this in the Japanese official site. I can read katakana and noticed the word “Online” for PS3 and Vita. So I think Vita got online multiplayer too besides ad-hoc.

    Can someone translate this?

  • Pockystix

Will prolly rock the Sorceress class

hope they make a spellsword class DLC~

  • Alexander Aubert

AHHHH….man……… no cross play??? i’m planning to buy it on vita, but none of my friends have vita……

    • AdachiTohru

I can be your friend if you want :)

      • Alexander Aubert

        that will be my pleassure

  • PoweredByHentai

I’ve mentioned this before but the US release date according to what is listed on Amazon is August 6.

    • Solomon_Kano

As also mentioned prior, Gamestop also lists it as August 6th.

  • Göran Isacson

My Vita is ready… and hopefully it will also be ready for a patch that allows crossplay. Hopefully.

  • Solomon_Kano

Definitely snagging the Vita version. First, at least. I’ll not leave this generation without some Vanillaware goodness on my PS3, as well. Wonder if it’ll support couch co-op? Seems likely, but you never know.

    • Zeik56

I seem to remember hearing that it was going to be in the game, but who knows if that’s true or if it made it this far into development.

  • ShadowDivz

Im torn. Which version you guys think will be better? Im kinda tilting towards vita.
On the go would definitely be a plus for this game.

  • Oltheros

Vanillaware games have a solid track record for leaving the JP voice track intact…let’s see what Atlus USA does.

  • Roberto Maselli

Anyone know if it has offline coop?
