David Hayter Isn’t Voicing Snake In Metal Gear Solid V

By Ishaan . March 28, 2013 . 2:30pm

It has been confirmed that David Hayter, the well-known writer-cum-voice actor who voices the Solid Snake character, will not be returning for Metal Gear Solid V.

On Wednesday, Hayter tweeted: “Well look, At least I had a good run.” The tweet was made on the same day that Konami announced Metal Gear Solid V, causing ardent fans to speculate that Hayter would not be involved in the game. A fan reached out to Hayter over Twitter and asked if Konami had offered him a role in the game, and he replied: “Nope.”

Then, Gametrailers’ Geoff Keighley reported via Twitter: “Fun 1 hour interview with @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN. Will have it online later this week. He confirmed no Hayter for MGS5 and a lot of other things.”

At least he’s going to be in MGR, right? :D
Now I await an incredible, but awful pun in the comments section.

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Come to think about it… Has there been an English advertisement about Soul Snake? ._.

      • MrSirFeatherFang

        Sadly no :(

  • Guest

    “well-known writer-cum-voice actor”

    Wat @[email protected]

    • DuskSharkEX

      Basically writer/voice actor.

      • Guest

ah, i probably (or that’s an understatement) have a rather dirty mind XD

        • Chris Yuen

Cum can mean “together with” or “plus”. Not necessary the meaning that you are thinking of. The usage of the word is pretty common everywhere…

          • Guest

except that you don’t see the word used outside the “thing i’m thinking of” that much, and its not a common used word , hell try going to google, type up those words and get ready for a surprise

          • Akuosa

“An English linking word, derived from the Latin word for ‘with.’ It is used in many place names in England as well as in everyday English – e.g. Prestwich-cum-Oldham” << That's what wikipedia says. I got the meaning, and english is not my first language. It's ok if you smirk at its use while understanding the sentence, but if you only knew that meaning you have in mind… you have a lack of vocabulary problem, not just a dirty mind.

          • Guest

well i know what it means, just that most people would just use ‘/’ rather than ‘-cum-‘, and i don’t think this needs mentioning but it IS a joke (and a rather shitty one in which i do apologize)

          • chroma816

Don’t say “most people” when you seem to be the only one who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

          • Guest

how many times do i need to explain that the first statement was meant to be a joke to begin with, i know what it means, and the part where i used ‘most people’ isn’t part of the ‘people who doesn’t know on what cum meant’, read the context

        • neocatzon

          Try this: magna cum laude.

  • Ben Chau

Well that’s unfortunate. Hopefully Big Boss is voiced by Richard Doyle as he did do Big Boss in MGS4. Maybe it’s because Big Boss is older now and they wanted to use Doyle for that role.

    • ZEROthefirst

From the trailer if that is Naked Snake talking at the end, then it doesn’t sound like it’s going to be Richard Doyle either. Honestly if it’s not one of those 2 then it won’t be the same (I’ll still play the hell out of the game, but it’ll be missing something).

      • alexis cortes

I think that maybe Kaz is the one talking at the end of the trailer (The one talking about Diamond Dogs being their new home).

        • Solomon_Kano

You can hear Big Boss’ voice during the gameplay though. It’s not Doyle either.

          Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=g4dCstvjkcY

          • Utku Savaş

It’s Doyle my friend. He just changed his voice to sound like David Hayter because he is not old like at the end of MGS4. The transition from David Hayter to Richard Doyle will be smooth and I can guarantee you that Doyle can make millon different voices. He was Moebius the Time Streamer in the Legacy of Kain series.

          • Solomon_Kano

            Oh? Doyle’s pretty incredible then.

      • Solomon_Kano

A better preview of his voice is the gameplay footage. I don’t think it’s Boss talking at the end of the trailer, but he does speak during the gameplay.

        • Utku Savaş

I suspected that’s the middle-aged Ocelot who speaks at the end of the reveal trailer.

    • Utku Savaş

It was expected that Richard Doyle will voice Big Boss since Peace Walker. Kojima did a surprising last minute twist and David Hayter voiced Big Boss again. So, since Big Boss is aging, it’s too convenient that Richard Doyle starts voicing him since at the end of MGS4, he is the one who voiced Big Boss after all. And if you listened closely enough, he changed his voice to imitate David Hayter’s, simply because, he is not old enough to sound like Big Boss from MGS4. It’s a period of transition from middle aged Big Boss to old Big Boss. It fits perfectly.

  • Brimfyre

As it has been speculated. They are probably trying to seperate Big Boss from Solid Snake for the inevitable Metal Gear Remake. Would be silly to have Hayter acting off himself.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

Solid Snake vs Big Boss: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_58-XYXuJMs
      It has to be Hayter

    • Why would they remake MG? I think it’d be a lot more interesting to play as The Boss or someone else in the far future. Konami doesn’t have to limit itself to this 50 year timeframe.

      • Shane Bryson

They would remake MG because it absolutely needs to be remade.

      • Utku Savaş

Because MG and MG2 contradicts with the rest of the series. Oh, and Kojima did mention several times that he wants to make a game about The Boss in the times of Normandy with Cobra Unit at World War II.

    • DanteJones

While I’d love to see a remake of Metal Gear, isn’t the Japanese voice actor still the same?

      • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

      • Utku Savaş

Then again, in the Japanese version of MGS4, Liquid Ocelot was voiced by Banjo Ginga, who voiced Liquid Snake in MGS1 and 2.

    • Shane Bryson

Actually no, in this story line, it would be silly for him to not voice both parts. It will ruin the game.

      • Wait what

Big Boss had a different voice in MGS4. As he got older, his voice changed. This did not happen to the accelerated aging Solid Snake.

        • Brion Valkerion

yeah when hes like… 90 it makes sense to have a different voice, but they are similar in age during the games so it makes sense.

Its kinda like in that show… How I met your mother. The narrator is supposed to be the main character like 15-20 years in the future, yet its a different guys voice. It makes no sense haha.

          • Utku Savaş

  • dragoon_slayer12

Well, hopefully he can get his big screen debut in the (eventual) mgs flick. All he has to do is submit his resume and this picture, and if he gets passed over, Hollywood is dumber than dumb

  • DanteJones

You’ll always be Snake to me, David Hayter.

  • This is crazy. He is snake and he is able. Does not make any sense. Did that Square guy that just got fired join Konami?

  • Kei-chan

I bet the reason why he isn’t voicing snake is because its not snake! Maybe hes already dead and this is a clone?!?!

    • Michael Kelehan

He already voices a clone of Naked Snake: Solid Snake.

  • ギャビン

What kind of animal is that next to him?

    • Guest

      uh…a bear

    • A wolverine, judging by the tweet.

  • Jake Caro

It’s definitely because it’s Big Boss now, he’s older, it’s clearly the mindset Kojima is in. If they ever DID do a MG remake they would HAVE to be different voices.

    • César H. Sandoval

Yet they’re still using the same guy in the Japanese version.

      • Jake Caro

That could simply mean a different range capability. The Japanese version really has nothing to do with the English version.

    • Solid Snake is old as fuck in MGS4, David still did the voice work. So what’s your point?

      • Jake Caro

My point is having two characters that come into direct contact/battle with each other being voiced by the same person would be stupid.

This isn’t “Solid Snake” in MGS 4, it’s big boss, who appeared in MGS4. Remember that scene at the end when they talked?

Would have been pretty retarded if they both had the same voice.

  • Solomon_Kano

Works for me. I love Hayter, and he’ll always be Solid Snake to me, but Big Boss has had a different voice before, doesn’t bother me in the least that he’ll have a different voice again.

His voice had to change at some point. The series is moving closer and closer to the time period of MG, so might as well start getting us used to Big Boss and Snake not having the same voice. Especially if Kojima carries this up to a remake of MG/MG2.

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

If Kojima ever remakes the first two Metal Gears I wonder if he’ll change some stuff considering how he regretted Metal Gear Solid not being a remake of the first game. The truth is that Metal Gear Solid has part of its plot recycled from the first two games such as the ninja enemy to Snake, the doctor, etc. Kojima pretty much confessed this with Solid 2.

      • Solomon_Kano

I figure we’re in for some changes. He’s already adjusted the timeline some to rejig Big Boss’ age from what it would’ve been according to MG/MG2.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Hayter already commented back in 2011 that he had troubles doing the Snake voice. If his Peace Walker performance wasn’t a proof then this might be.

    • Aoshi00

Yeah, that makes sense. Hayter has a great Snake voice, but it sounds like he exerted much more effort compared to his Jpn counterpart Ootsuka Akio, who has a more naturally deep voice. And I think Kojima won’t be ditching his crew anytime soon including Ootsuka.. It’s a pity if he isn’t coming back in some form, what a talented writer voice actor.. reminds me when Terrence Howard was promised to come back in Iron Man 2, he was pissed they gave the role to Don Cheadle instead.

Now he really looks like Snake w/ the facial hair… the hyena looking thing next to him looks like “when animals attack” lol..

    • Uh he did it just fine… he didn’t even look like he forced it. the only proof this shows is he’s still capable of doing it. And obviously he was up for it, If he can still do it why would they not use him? Also, he still sounds more like snake than the new actor, so again, why change him?

  • Unlimax

    Hayterz Gonna Hayte T.T

  • Kairo Fujima

What bothers me is the fact that he was never approached about it to begin with. David Hayter’s been voicing Solid Snake for 15 years. It’s disrespectful to him to not even be told about the change of direction the series is taking. I understand that he’s not a developer in the series, but his voice is an icon to many fans of Metal Gear Solid and to not be told about MGSV is like a slap in the face.

    • Solomon_Kano

Not being offered a role doesn’t mean he wasn’t told he wouldn’t be doing Big Boss’ voice this time around. That’s information we do not, and likely never will have.

  • KnifeAndFork
  • Brandon001

Much love to Hayter, end of an era in the MGS universe.

  • personablaze

I’m curious…So David wont be in it..But are they gonna change the Japanese VA? (I don’t know who does the VA for the Japanese ver)

Does anyone know? Thx in advance.

    • z_merquise

Akio Otsuka is the Japanese voice actor for Snake. He also voiced Big Boss in the Ground Zeroes reveal.

      • personablaze

Ah I see,Thank you for the reply :)

  • Such a shame. Wonder what made them change? Knowing how I am, I’ll be wondering how the game would sound with Hayter while playing it.

  • I figure it out. You’re not playing big boss. You’re playing a new character. The rejected clone. Explains the horn at the end of the trailer.

    I= Big Boss
    II= Solid Snake
    III= Liquid Snake
    IV= Solidus Snake

    V= ?

    V has come to.

Introducing the new character Vapor Snake!!

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Metal Gear Ac!d already pulled this twist. It would be awkward for Kojima to recycle from something he didn’t write.

    • JustThisOne

I’ve actually got a theory in a similar vein. There’s a good chance that the reason why Hayter hasn’t been called is because you aren’t playing as Solid. Considering this is a prequel, perhaps you’re playing as… Big Boss?

      *swing and a miss*

      • Hayter was the voice for Solid and Big Boss so if they are using a different voice its either your playing as another clone or they didn’t come to an understanding with the contracts.

        • Dhruv Rajyagor

Three points to make from me:

          1) Technically, in MGS4, Big Boss, who was voiced by Richard Doyle, wasn’t voiced by David Hayter, as he was voicing Solid Snake. Perhaps his aging has a factor in this new actor choice. After all, your voice changes over time.

          2) In the Ground Zeroes trailer, Big Boss’s voice is almost exactly the same as his voice in Japanese Peace Walker. Apparently, Kojima chose the actor for Big Boss for Peace Walker since the Snake’s VA’s Dad voiced Big Boss in MGS4, and he could imitate his dad’s voice. So why keep the VA in the Japanese version and change the English? Well…

          3) http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mission/18361/metal-gear-solid-5-confirmed-will-feature-solid-snake

Remember this from June of last year? Hayter is confirmed for not voicing as Big Boss in MGSV. But what about him voicing Solid Snake? ;)

    • Dhruv Rajyagor

IT was stated by Kojima in his interview with Geoff Keighley that you will play only one character; Big Boss. Sorry dude.

HOWEVER, there IS a possibility of another clone, though that possibility of playing as said clone is 0%.

    • Adrian Duran

MGSV won’t be played by Big Boss… it will be played by Vic Boss

  • Ethan_Twain

Just throwing this out there… would it not be just like Kojima to lie about this and have a secret different voice actor redo the lines for trailers but actually have Hayter do the game? I’m not necessarily predicting this or even wishing for it, but I wouldn’t put this sort of ridiculous stunt past Metal Gear Solid. No sir, not for a second.

    • Solomon_Kano

No, it really wouldn’t. Kojima deals with misinformation or vagueness, not outright lies. For instance, with MGS2 he said the game starred Snake. Well, Raiden’s code name at the start of the game was Snake, so that was true, it just wasn’t the Snake everyone expected.

In this case it’s not even Kojima saying anything misleading, this is Hayter himself saying that he hasn’t been approached to do Big Boss’ voice. Another thing to consider is that Akio Ohtsuka, Snake’s Japanese voice, is returning. Why waste the time setting something up like that, and only setting it up for one version of the game?

  • Saher

he was good in mgs1,not that much for the rest…about time.

    • César H. Sandoval

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Hayter not working in the next Metal Gear?

  • anarchy_panty

This seems like a really bad move. I’d bet money on Hayter’s Snake voice being the most recognizable VO work in the history of the medium. I’m still stoked for the game, but this is probably going to alienate more than a few hardcore fans.

  • Richard N

Good, give Richard Doyle a chance. Big Boss seems to be getting pretty old and having a different voice actor will atleast differentiate him from Solid Snake.

  • LynxAmali

I don’t even like MGS (Only was a fan of the original Metal Gear, not so much Solid[even though I’ve played all of them with the exception of 4) but even I know Hayter.

    This is…so wrong.
I’ll still play it but it will take some serious getting used to.

  • LittleMofreaky

This really isn’t a big deal. Big Boss had a different voice at the end of MGS4. It would be weird if his voice had no transition at all in this game.

  • Göran Isacson

Don’t know if I believe it. Hell I don’t know what I CAN believe at this point. What is fake? What is real? What is PR? Who is Joakim? I do not know. I really, really do not know. I will just sit back and wait and watch.

  • This is very hard to me to accept and imagine someone else as Snake’s English VA.

    • Steve Blum’s voice sound a lot like David Hayter, maybe Blum could voice Snake, they both sound alike and I don’t think Blum wouldn’t sound any different.

  • Arizato

This saddens me a little. I haven’t been a fan for very long. Played the first Metal Gear Solid game when I was 9 or 10, didn’t go through the game though. Played through all the canon Metal Gear games in October/November last year. Hayter is like a part of Big Boss/Solid Snake.

Yes, I know that Big Boss had a different voice actor in MGS4. But I simply prefer Hayter since I’ve heard him over the course of 6 games now. Some may consider his acting cheesy and over the top, but I find it really charming and all around awesome.

Thank you for the awesome moments, David Hayter! You were the biggest thing from MGS I remember from my childhood!

Here’s to Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. I’m hoping they turn out to be amazing games.

  • Kandou Erik

Everyone knows comas damage and change your voice. Makes perfect sense.

  • l777l

If this is actually true, and if it applies to both Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain then I very much dislike it. Hayter is Solid/Naked Snake’s voice. Giving Solid/Naked Snake any other voice would change that character into something he is not.

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Well what can we do if Hayter can’t pull that voice anymore and he is a writer to begin with?

      • l777l

There may be a good explanation, but it doesn’t change what I said. By the way, your attempt seems pretty weak.

        • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Well, then they’ll have to change it and fans will have to get over it. It’s that simple. Hayter already said back in 2011 he had problems pulling that voice.

          • l777l

“That voice” being Old Snake’s dying noises?

  • So many voice actors changing lately. By the time SSB4 comes around, nobody will have the same voice actor as they did in Brawl. Such a shame.

  • That picture

  • SonicRulez

So…what, he was fired? They just flat started a new role and didn’t consult him? David Hayter IS Solid Snake.

  • “You can’t fire me! I’m the boss! I *AM* this company!”
*dragged out by security personnel while a smirking, devious Kojima sits behind a rustic wood & leather desk, hands together*

  • Nitraion

    Nooooo Snakkeeee…….
Maybe kojima using Hayter’s DNA for current VA..
solid hayter will be born O:

  • Anime10121

    Snake? What happened? Snaaake? Snaaaaaaaaaakkkkkkeeeeee?

  • Lucas .

    It’s for the better.

    Snake’s voice was so overplayed…

    inb4 shit storm

  • Lester Paredes

Perhaps now that Snake is old, and went through some traumatic injuries as seen in Phantom Pain, is the reason why. Hopefully, if they ever decide to make another game based on Old Snake, aka Clone Snake, they’ll get Hayter.

  • ZekeFreek

I’m not getting this without David Hayter, I just can’t.

  • Phil

    Crap :(

  • Elvick

Wonder if his price went up any and that is why they’re switching without asking.

  • LaserVision

It was a good run. I’d think after so many games and so many years playing the same character that Hayter would want a break. We don’t want to be like the Batman fans who want Kevin Conroy to voice EVERY SINGLE BATMAN GAME/MOVIE WHETHER HE WANTS TO OR NOT. Do we?

  • Ace

  • I wonder if this is in the same line as Quinton Flynn not hearing from Konami if he could voice Raiden, so I’d hold your breath on this one.
Who knows it could be that he’s still voicing snake (as The Phantom Pain is still pretty much in development)

  • Adol Christin

He kinda looks like Snake in that pic :P

My hype level just went way way down :(

  • zero254

Not putting Snake in Snake’s game.

Naw, I still like the new directions. It’s good to let Kojima have some freedoms.

  • TheInternetNomad

Big Boss is in a coma, has Coldman’s lighter prosthetic arm and some kind of horn jutting out of his head. Maybe he’s being controlled by Coldman to a certain degree ala Liquid Ocelot style (via the horn in his head). Would explain why David Hayter apparently wasn’t called back to voice Big Boss.

  • Konami’s fuckin up..

  • ndjn3979

    That’s a mighty big shame.

  • Philip Irwin

Damn son, if I didn’t know any better I would have thought that was Graham Stark and not David Hayter.

  • Maybe Kojima finally saw Guyver 2…

  • Ali Shamsedin

This is BS because the Japanese VA Akio Otsuka has been confirmed that he will be voicing Snake again for the new game while David Hayter won’t. I think Kojima’s hiding something, or else he’s trolling.
