PlayStation Vita Firmware Update To Add Folders And More

By Ishaan . April 9, 2013 . 1:30pm

PlayStation Vita is getting a firware update later today that will add folders to the device’s list of capabilities. Here’s the list of features the update will add:

  • Create folders to more easily manage your favorite application icons on the home screen, with up to 10 icons in each folder and a maximum of 100 on the home screen (including icons inside the folders).

  • Verify which PS Vita card you are using by looking at the home screen’s info bar. You can also save the layout of your home screen icons in the memory card.

  • Added video support allows you to play videos within the browser (memory card required; some videos are not supported).

  • New email enhancements allows you to view HTML messages, add multiple email addresses to your contacts, and easily search your messages using the new search feature.

  • PlayStation Plus members will be able to automatically update PlayStation Mobile format software and upload game save data onto online storage using 3G connection.

  • New “Mute Automatically” option will mute your PS Vita speakers when your headset is unplugged and pause your music when using the music app.

The update will be released later this evening in North America and sometime on April 10th in Europe.

The mute feature sounds like a really good idea.

Still want an easy way to swap between JP PSN and US PSN, though. Having to format the Vita every time is kinda dumb.

And, no, two memory cards really don’t help. It saves you the effort of backing stuff up and restoring it, but you still have to reset the Vita every single time you want to do it.

    • Kevadu

Yeah, it’s a pain but it’s still better than being region-locked…

      • Crevox

It’s just dumb that the restriction is even in place. We CAN switch, there’s a method… it just takes forever. They clearly didn’t block it off entirely from us doing it, instead we just have a really annoying long method we have to go through. I don’t know why they just don’t make it easier.

        • Aoshi00

It’s definitely a painstaking process (2 separate memory cards, hard reset, long intro vid, etc) that discourages one from switching back and forth btwn 2 accounts. Not to mention the most fatal one, DLCs are region locked, so I decided to just use my main US account for good, and ignore the pre-order bonus DLCs even if I import a Jpn game (thank god Muramasa is localized or I’d be missing out on the 4 new DLC chapters).. because I really don’t feel like adding trophies for several games to my Jpn acct, which I only used to d/l things.

W/ 360, most Jpn games are region locked, but one would still be able to add achievements from both US/Jpn games to the same gamertag.

Folders are definitely welcoming and important. Before they were added to the 3DS, it had so many icons or you’re forced to shrink them to fit more on one page you cant really see them.

        • Testsubject909

We’re not really supposed to switch though, at least from the publisher’s view point and all the legal stuff they need to deal with.

The fact that it’s (Edit: By it I mean the ability to switch accounts) still present is already a godsend.

          • Aoshi00

Well, technically we’re not supposed to import either even if the games or systems are region free as the box’s back says Jpn only.

It’s always been a hassle w/ the reset, but before the first Vita firmware update, only 1 memory card was needed and you could save the demo and DLC from both US/Jpn accts on the same memory card.. just seems counterintuitive when one could switch on the fly on the PS3, and it’s the same XMB interface.. they definitely have discouraged me from switching though. some people just use the Jpn acct and stay w/ that to use the pre-order bonus DLC.. at least the physical games are still region-free, just the DLCs aren’t..

    • Micrll

As much as I want it I doubt we will see it, I think they have made the product decision to simply not support it. Sad after how the PS3 was the easiest console of this generation to import stuff for. At least the physical Vita cards are not region locked.

    • Yeah, I can understand not being able to swap between US and US account but they should totally allow us to swap between US and JP.

    • The world is in Play

      • Testsubject909

It has been for many years.

    • The real solution I think would be to allow region-locked accounts to region swap, which wouldn’t require any changes to the Vita and would eliminate most of the issues we have.

Ultimately though we’ll never see a region-swap functionality. Even though the games are not region-locked, there is a certain expectation set by the distributors and publishers that the content is region specific. You’ll notice for instance that Vita game boxes have a “Japan only” region note on them. Sad, but at least we have the options we have for import/play.

      • ShadowDivz

Out of curiosity what game is that?

        • Demon Gaze. The same mark is on my Senran Kagura, Ciel no Surge, P4G, Atelier Totori , and Miku boxes.

          • it is on every Japanese game that ever exists. Kingdom hearts BBS, Kingdom hearts Days, all three Neptune titles, every Tales release, pretty much…everything. Even Ryuusei no Rockman (Starforce) has it.

All of my imported 1/8th scale figures have it on their boxes as well. Same goes for CDs and books. It means nothing, does nothing, and will never do anything.

          • Testsubject909

It’s supposed to do something, but honestly they’ll never be policed for it. It’s one of those superfluous needless rules…

Like the rule of placing such minimalistic censoring on every single one of their adult entertainment oriented videos and pictures… Completely useless.

Because that blur or that small black line is totally going to prevent me from feeling excited… Yup Japan… You’re totally right… It works so much… So much… seriously who’s the bright guy who thought this would actually work?

Edit: Better question. Why is that law not repealed yet?

          • MrSirFeatherFang

Oh how right you are my good sir :D

          • ShadowDivz

Is probably what they said to John Connor weeks before the robots rebelled.

          • ShadowDivz

No, i know it’s on all japanese games i was just wondering what game that was specifical– you bastard you have Shinovi versus?!
            God i want that game.

      • I have import games and CDs that are twenty years old that say that. Its just some generic thing Japanese media says on it. PS3 games say it and they’re undoubtedly region free. I think it basically an indication that the game is in Japanese language.

        • The point of it is that the publishers and distributors intend for it to be used/consumed in a specific region. Essentially, the company doing the publishing licenses and retains the rights for publishing in their region of operation.

As a result, the statement being made is that the publisher is releasing that material under rights for that specific region.

Of course, as we’ve seen, Sony does not force publishers and distributors to actually use region locking in the code, which allows us to import and even digital download goods from other regions, but this is more of a *winkwink*nudgenudge* feature, not an actual advertised and encouraged method.

The reason is because, using Demongaze as an example, Kadokawa does not have publishing rights and licensing to distribute the game in the US. Therefore, if Sony was to make it so that Vita users could easily swap regions then it would have ramifications (in the event of any kind of litigation) that publishers of material on the Vita either MUST region lock, or must at least have publishing rights for ALL areas that might access the content.

THAT is what I was trying to say — We can get this material and use it, but it’s not intended that was have that “right” so to speak. THAT is why Sony will never open it up and make it so our PSN accounts can easily swap between regions.

      • Testsubject909

I’m happy with the ability to import Retail.

        Certainly helps a lot.

    • They should start by removing that minute and a half video that always appears whenever you reset the Vita. So much time wasted on looking at that waste of internal device memory.

      • Crevox

No kidding… we can’t even skip it. :|

      • Testsubject909

        Oh, now I get it…

That’s what you folks mean when you say you “reset your Vita”. You mean full factory reset…

Ah…. I thought you just meant regular reset.

    • Sebastian Lothian

The mute feature is the one I’m looking forward to. I accidentally unplug my headphones when I’m studying at school, so it would help prevent me from disturbing others.

  • Minos

Buuu…now Nintendo Fans wont be able to use this joke:

    • xXDGFXx

Even if Vita has folders, the 3DS’s UI looks tons nicer and the button navigation doesn’t feel shoehorned in…

      • ShadowDivz

Personally i prefer the Vita’s UI. But that’s just me. Also i like putting wallpapers, make it feel more “mine”.

        • Draparde

yeah, i love the wallpaper aspect of the vita’s main screen. i wish the 3DS supported that X_x. especially since the DSi had something like it.

        • Testsubject909

I got my Start Screen set up to remind me of a game I’m anticipating. Immediately in my Vita the many pages I have have a specific layering of wallpapers that fits a theme of angelic to demonic with a central plane that’s very human and social bonds focused. I changed the default background color first because when you’re on that page, the background color will show when you move to the left or right app tab, so my topmost is a white colored background dormant behind my wallpaper (a lovely smiling Nico Robin in a white background within the image itself) and the bottom is a heavy red colored background dormant behind my wallpaper (Hitoshura held and surrounded by the many Fiends).

Along with that, I’ve set up my icons to each layers pending what use I have for them. One layer is specifically Music and Videos only, another is social aspects (Near, Friend’s List and Messaging, it’s my center page). One is set specifically for PSP games, another for PS Games with the Remote Play option at the top which acts as counter balance to SMT’s Lucifer present in the bottom of that particular page, etc etc…

So yeah. It’s nice how you can make your Vita feel truly yours in it’s presentation with just a few things.

        • xXDGFXx

I’m not much of a fan of floating icons. Having neat little tiles all lined up and uniform just feels much nicer for me. Wallpaper customization isn’t that great due to the fact that I have giant bubbles blocking it.

    • That Pit is such a troll. He must be learning from the best!

    • xzeldax3

At least the vita folders appear to show more than one character as its name! Only a letter as a folder name always annoys me with the 3DS folders.

      • Testsubject909

And so I imagine there’ll be a counter trolling measure.

Vita Folder name: “How’s one letter doing for you?”

  • Micrll

Finally they are adding folders. However, this won’t solve the 100 “bubble” limit that some people are running into. I don’t have the issue as I only have a 4GB card but it’s still puzzling that they have it at all. I am getting the feeling that the OS for the Vita was a rush job and that internally it’s code is a mess, hence why new features have been so slow in coming.

Also would it have killed them to make the video higher res. than 480P one is blur city, given how nice the Vita screen is in person they could have done better on it.

Edit: I also predict that the first folder for most will be “junk”. All the extra stuff that few use will be shoved in it.

    • wat_wat

“Edit: I also predict that the first folder for most will be “junk”. All the extra stuff that few use will be shoved in it.”

      Yep :D

      • Testsubject909

I might not use it since it’d only be to store Welcome Park, E-mails and Maps.

Lowering down 3 icons to 1 won’t really do much for me….

I wonder if they’ll make it that you can use some sort of picture to represent your Folder or if the Folder icon will always display a miniature of all the items inside it. Kinda ugly looking as it is.

    • Sakurazaki

You should’ve seen me my first day with the Vita.

It still haunts me to this day.

      • I truly wish Sony removes that minute and a half video clip that always appears whenever you reset the Vita. So much flash memory wasted on it, which can be used for something more useful, like multiple account switching.

        • Testsubject909

(Edit: After scrolling down and reading some more… Now I see. You guys don’t mean regular Reset. You mean full factory reset for the purposes of switching accounts…)

When I reset my Vita, after the Disclaimer, it goes straight to my Start Screen (and the lovely Dragon’s Crown Sorceress Wallpaper I used for it).

I have reset my Vita in many ways. The normal way when you just close your Vita and later open it. The forced way of holding the power button until it asks you if you want to reset your Vita. The accidental way of I fell asleep with my Vita in hand and woke up to find the battery dead, recharged it and turned it back on.

And I never had a video pop up for me…

Then again when I first got my Vita, I took some time to get familiar with the Welcome Park because I figured why not.

And ever since, Welcome Park has just been a little icon floating in color coordination with a specific Nico Robin wallpaper I have up on top.

    • ShadowDivz

I can’t believe some people actually have around 100icons. I wonder what they are. PS1 classics?

      • people are mental

      • neo_firenze

        It’s a combination of:
        (1) system apps (there are something like 16 icons just as part of the base system functionality)
        (2) icons for retail card games – each game requires a small install that leaves an icon, so people with a decent number of physical game cards add a lot of icons that don’t take up much actual memory card space
        (3) PSP games
        (4) PS1 and other “classics” (for instance, the NeoGeoStation PSP games or TG-16/PCE games, which are quite small)

It’s not as hard to get 100 as you may think. I did it on my 32GB card.

        • ShadowDivz

Hmm. Never thought of it that way.
I wonder when PS2 games will work with vita.

    • Adol Christin

480p quality is good enough :)

  • KuchikiSentou

Love the layout saving feature. I don’t have to arrange every time I switch cards.

  • wat_wat

Woooo! Folders, about time! I can finally hide those useless icons like Welcome Park now. And no more shifting through multiple screens. the 100 app limit is still troubling, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

    • Ricardo C

I’d name it “useless” for those apps. I wish the 100 limit goes away because I like a lot of PSP and PSOne Classic titles

      • Yes, the 100 icon limit is overwhelming. It should be set to at least 300-500.

        • Ricardo C

          I’d say amen to that!

  • saxophone15

Layout saving feature is definitely something I would use whenever I get another big memory card.

  • Edzo04

Folders and layout saving. Never thought id see these very necessary features being added. Now let me use both of my accounts on it and ill be a happy boy

    • ShadowDivz

I know it’s weird. A company actually doing something USEFUL for fans.
      I kid, i kid. xD

  • TheExile285

Oh this is an awesome update

  • Finally! Iv’e been waiting for the folder option forever. The fact that I can actually watch videos now is good too lol

    • Testsubject909

You know, if ever they make a notepad type app for the Vita.

I’m probably never going to really need a tablet.

      • True lol. My friend just bought a tablet recently, and I just saw it as meh. Only thing good about it is the bigger screen.

  • I am just going to assume that Wallpapers will continue to look like absolute trash even with this update. The other stuff is nice and all, but I want my Vita to actually look -nice- outside of games. I swear, if the PSP could scale images to fit its screen almost perfectly, the Vita; which is double the PSP’s res, should be able too as well.

    • Testsubject909

      *doubles checks my Vita wallpapers*

My wallpapers looks pretty damn good if you ask me… Then again they’re lossless image files that I quickly made myself by using IrFanView to take out the proper resolution that was discovered early on to set up my wallpapers… And they all look fine and crisp on my screen.

    • Kefkiroth

Pretty much this. I have to specifically pick out certain wallpapers that don’t get noticeable artifacts from the Vita’s awful compression. Basically anything with a lot going on in them, like this BRS wallpaper. Any simple wallpaper will look like a mess on mine.

      • Syn

Wow, well I certainly havent had that problem yet, all my hi res wallpapers translate absolutely well on the crisp vita screen.

  • KyoyaHibari

Good thing they added folders. I kept picturing them improving the actual management of apps, but this works too. It’s a huge pain in this ass trying to move a newly installed app into a different screen EVERY TIME. What a relief. I wish they would also add sleep mode controls for music (L & R for switching songs, etc) I assumed that with one of the patches when it said: “new control features for music” they meant quick transitions, but no…come on Sony, you had it on PS3 and PSP, it should be second nature by now.

  • Draparde

    man…i need a larger memory card….

  • tubers

Is no one else interested in the browser video capability?

Hope this isn’t limited to Youtube vids only.. then again, maybe this means you can use Youtube within the browser while gaming and not having to close the YT app.

    • Testsubject909

I’m happy there’s a zoom function now for photos, but I don’t use it often. Still it’s nice to have it present.

  • Daniel Williams

when does this update go live?

    • Nyandroid

The update is available now. You can get it by going to your settings.

  • Nyandroid

Watch videos within browser!? YES! FINALLY MY DREAM HAS COME TRUE!!!!

  • Testsubject909

Slightly confused about one thing in the video.

I’ve already done sending messages to multiple recipients at the same time… Many months ago… Back when Silent Hill Book of Memories came out.

I’m guessing it’s the part where you can select multiple people at the same time that’s new?

    *doubles checks on his Vita*

Yup… That’s the bit that’s new with the messaging system. You can select multiple recipients in one go rather then having to repeat the process. Fair enough, well appreciated.

  • ワン スャレ

I still can’t watch funny videos on my browser *cough*

  • cloudcaelum

    Awesome update!

I hope gifs workable too. On brower no problem but in Vita, wth!

Btw photos still looks bad when you put for wallpapers?

  • enorka miho

I really wanted to change the vita background music… though you can simply play a music.. but, i do not have enough of memory space to do that…
