Batman: Arkham Origins To Be A “Year Two” Story

By Ishaan . April 12, 2013 . 2:30pm

In a short development diary video at Game Informer, WB Games Montreal, the developers of Batman: Arkham Origins, explain their approach to the game. Rocksteady say they wanted to develop a “Year two” story, and this is the reason the game is set several years prior to Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Batman: Arkham Origins takes place on Christmas Eve in Gotham City, with the city divided into two sections. Old Gotham is the part of the city that would eventually go on to become Arkham City. Meanwhile, New Gotham, separated from Old Gotham by a bridge, is the more modern part of the city, and is an entirely new, much more metropolitan environment filled with skyscrapers.

“The challenge for us coming in after [Arkham Asylum developer] Rocksteady is to do something that hasn’t been done,” says Eric Holmes, creative director. “Something that isn’t a retread and isn’t [a] copy-paste of their game. It has to add value, it has to bee new. To me, the key to that prequel is the invigoration that it adds to things.”

That having been said, Rocksteady have been available for assistance whenever required. The studio was able to assist with technological aspects of development and explain things like how Batman’s cape simulation system works and so on.

Holmes adds that WB Games Montreal are being careful with what they add to Batman: Arkham Origins in terms of new features and characters. “We’re not adding 20 things that suck,” he says. Instead, they’re cherry-picking things to add based on their creative vision for the game.

“We are very aware we are standing on the shoulders of giants,” says senior producer Ben Mattes. “We are playing in the space of some of the most critically-acclaimed games of all time and we’ve greatly benefited from that.”

Ok, I get what they are trying to do, but since the city is bigger this time they could try to include the batmobile somehow in the game.

    • DemonShadowX

I think it was mentioned somewhere that the Batwing will be utilized for quick travel, could be mistaken though.

      • Solomon_Kano

        That’s correct.

    • Austen Klein

I would rather have the game be more enclosed, detailed and more personal that bigger and blander.

  • Ben Sylvia

Please have a Manbat battle, please please PLEASE….

    • Are you also thinking of episode 1 of The Animated Series? :D

    • That would be amazing. I want a chase sequence where you’re both flying.

    • Solomon_Kano

I’ve been asking for that since AA was announced. Imagine how amazing that could be! Picture stalking some thugs from a rooftop only to be suddenly snatched into the air by Manbat and dropped somewhere else in the city. Having him appear at random leading up to a confrontation would be so cool.

  • StarWarudo

I’m shivering with excitement at mere thought that this game comes out THIS YEAR! OMFG.

  • Richard N

I really am glad to see how humble and respectful the new team has been to the fans and Rocksteady. I sincerely hope for the best for them.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Then I guess we’ll spend most of our time in Old Gotham if not it would be very boring.

    • 古戸ヱリカ

Half of the game will be beating up villains as Batman in Old Gotham. The other half you play as Bruce Wayne in New Gotham. You play quick time events to prevent Bruce from falling asleep at boring social events.

      • Solomon_Kano

I want to go to board meetings! Meet Morgan Freeman!

        • Morgan Freeman wont be in the game…

Didn’t you get the memo? XD

          • 10/10

    • Solomon_Kano

Old Gotham is the area from Arkham City though. So do you mean New Gotham? Because, apart from not having walls now, we’ve already explored that.

      • Baramos x

I think he’s saying skyscrapers are boring. Which, I mean, they COULD be, but hopefully they’ll make it interesting to maneuver around them.

        • Solomon_Kano

Ah. I could see that happening. I think they’ll manage though. Imagine diving off a skyscraper and swooping away at the last second! That seems like it’d be entertaining. It certainly was in the Spider-Man games.

        • Nicholas Allen Cotner

I can’t wait to do the glide dive from a super tall building in gotham……..will be sweet!

  • Kevin Schwarz

Yeah, yeah. You know what would be fun? Some Batmobile levels.

  • What do they mean by Year Two story?

    • I would assume it means his second year as Batman.

    • Adam Duffield

Batmans first three years as batman were labeled Year One, Year Two and Year Three. Year Two is when many staple Batman enemies make thier first appearance.

    • Baramos x

Year One involved Batman and Gordon creating their partnership, Catwoman being introduced, many of the mob villains like Carmine Falcone being introduced, etc. People like Harvey Dent hadn’t yet become Two-Face, though, nor had most of Batman’s “rogues gallery” popped up (no Joker yet, for instance). So early in his career but not right at the beginning.

The only thing I can say for sure, though, for the “Arkham universe”, is that Penguin hasn’t had a bottle shoved in his eye yet.

  • Solomon_Kano

Glad to hear more about their involvement with Rocksteady.

I’m interested to see who the new villains are. 8 assassins from across the DCU. Having just started watching Arrow, it’d be pretty kickass to see Merlyn make an appearance.

More than that though, I’m hopeful that we see some of Bats’ other villains return or appear for the first time. I wanna fight Croc in the sewers! I wanna see the Clock King!

    • I would imagine we’ll be seeing Lady Shiva if assassins are involved.

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea, she seemed like a given to me. Hopefully we get David Cain as well.

  • DarthSithZero

If this game have a Big city like GTA’s and you can call the Batmobile & Batwing to travel, with be amazing
